THE STAND!! SUPERFRIENDS!! GALACTICA 1980!! HIGHLANIMATED!! HercVault!!

Published at:  Sep 27, 2007 3:35:36 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

If you’ve been looking for an excuse to buy the engrossing 1994 miniseries version of Stephen King’s “The Stand” you need look not a lot further than The Stephen King Gift Set.

A new copy of “The Stand” miniseries sold separately is retailing for upwards of $78.99. (A used copy upwards of $32.95.)

The new $35.99 set contains not only all six hours of “The Stand,” but the separate miniseries “The Langoliers” and “Golden Years” as bonuses.

For those unaware, "The Stand" is based on King’s 1978 novel about a government-created virus that wipes out 99 percent of the world’s population. With most of the people wiped away, supernatural forces emerge and divide the survivors. King says “Lord of Rings” was an inspiration (Las Vegas = Mordor) and “The Stand” is often cited as a big inspiration for “Lost.”

The good guys in the mini are played by Gary Sinise as factory worker Texan Stu Redman, Molly Ringwald as Maine co-ed Frannie Goldsmith, Ray Walston as sociology professor Glen Bateman, Rob Lowe as deaf-mute drifter Nick Andros, Bill Fagerbakke as developmentally challenged Tom Cullen, Ossie Davis as judge Richard Farris, Ruby Dee as the ancient psychic Mother Abigail Freemantle, and Adam Storke as rock star Larry Underwood.

The bad guys are played by Jamey Sheridan as The Walking Dude, Matt Frewer as the pyromaniacal Trashcan Man, Rick Aviles as the Rat Man, Corin Nemec as nerd menace Harold Lauder, Laura San Giacomo as kindergarten teacher Nadine Cross, Miguel Ferrer as serial murderer Lloyd Henreid, and the “Saw” series’ Shawnee Smith as nymphomaniac teen Julie Lawry.

All are excellent.

1995’s “The Langoliers,” based on the 1990 novella in “Four Past Midnight,” is a creepy sci-fi tale about a plane that mysteriously loses most of its passengers in midair. It’s far from great, but I’d judge it works better than most episodes of “The Outer Limits.” I have particularly fond memories of Bronson Pinchot as lunatic businessman Craig Toomey, Mark Lindsay Chapman as British government toughguy Nick Hopewell, Dean Stockwell as brainy mystery author Bob Jenkins, and Kimber Riddle as troubled teen Bethany Simms. (Whatever happened to Kimber Riddle??)

1991’s little-seen “Golden Years” is much harder to remember. An original written by King but not based on his print work, it did so poorly for CBS the network never bothered to air its eighth and final episode. It’s about an elderly janitor at “The Shop” (the same sci-fi government agency that accidentally created firestarter Charlie McGee) who survives a lab explosion and finds himself growing younger as his former employers hunt him down. It starred a 29-year-old Felicity Huffman, seven years before “Sports Night,” as “Terry Spann.”

Herc’s Popular Pricing Pantry

Amazon’s list price for the Blu-ray edition of the third season of “Lost” – the first ABC/Disney season-set issued in an HD format – plummeted from $124.99 to $67.85 this week, following a similar adjustment in the set’s MSRP. (Those who preordered the set, which ships Dec. 11, should automatically be billed at the new, lower price, per Amazon policy.)

This brings the Blu-ray version of “Lost” more in line with NBC/Universal’s HD-DVD version of “Heroes,” currently available at $69.95.

Price-points remain a huge issue for the HD formats, now in their second year. If the “Lost” and “Heroes” sets still seem high, be reminded that only seven years ago the MSRP for the first season of “X-Files” on standard-definition DVD was $149.99, and even discounters rarely let it go for less than $110.

Hopefully the ever-competitive HD formats will lower their prices even further as the market begins to mature. (This kind of things sounds even better to those who remember playing $21 for a blank 6-hour VHS casette in the 1977. By contrast, I paid $19.99 last week for a 600-hour spindle of blank DVDs. Thank you, science!)

Amazon continues with its “TV Month sale”.

In fact, the sale got a little bit better in one way this week by knocking most of the “Smallville” sets all the way down to 67% OFF ($19.99 per season instead of the usual $39.98 or the SRP of $59.98.)

still can't believe we watch that show...it's horrible...you know it, I know it, and the American people know it. Jack Bauer, of course, knows it, as well.

Golden Years was a series, not a mini.

    by tonagan

But I'll forgive you for the error because you weren't born yet.
There was no "final episode", just a hastily thrown together ending for the video market. It was supposed to be an ongoing series that, considering its pace, would have taken quite a long time to finish (I know, it's shocking considering it was written by Stephen King). Also, Felicity Huffman was really hot in it - a proto-Scully.

Part 1 creepy and scary as hell, even if almost nothing happens, Part 2 starts great (with unfortunately pretty bad CGI) and then becomes boring.
Well, that's at least how I remember it from watching it 10 years ago.

    The Stand

    by knightshift

Just wanted to say that The Stand was the only television production, that I went and actively sought out the soundtrack CD. Snuffy Walden's score was amazing! And the rest of the movie was terrific too. Was never *completely* satisfied 'cuz I'm a rabid fan of the uncut novel and I wanted to see more depicted from it (would have loved to have seen more of Trashcan Man's trip across the country including meeting The Kid) but it was as good an adaptation as is likely to ever be made. Will prolly pick up this DVD too.

That's the miniseries, not the book. And yeah that 24 box art is hilarious looking. They probably didn't even give a shit and handed the art design off to some suits at fox knowing nobody would buy that piece of shit season anyway.

Every single boxed set this week seemed to be for a grotesquely unappealing show. Or maybe I was moved to hyperbole by the frightening thought that somewhere out there in our shitty country, somebody is buying a Dog The Bounty Hunter DVD set as an anniversary present for his wife.

    by newc0253

    that is all.

p.s. that is not all. Lana Lang has a weird top on. On the main cover shot, her top has a sleeve. On the DVD spine, though, it is missing a sleeve, emphasising the nubile grace of Ms Kreuk's shoulder. funny, huh?

    Galactica 1980 thoughts

    by tylermo

Yep. Saw this one about a week ago. Looks like the date was pushed back to December. This release is proof that Satan and all of his demons will be ice skating in Hell! I'll probably by this old cheesy piece of frakin' sh*t, despite how bad it was. I watched the original when I was 7 or 8, and loved it. I was probably 9 when 1980 aired. I knew it wasn't as good as Empire Strikes Back, but was too young not to watch. I had a chance to revisit them on the sci-fi channel about 12 years ago. Oh, the humanity! Everything thing I remembered was there, and then some. The flying motorcycles complete with Chips incidental music, Wolfman Jack, Adama with fake beard, Robert "Mike Brady" Reed, Kent McCord from Adam 12, Jerry Van Dyke, Cousin Oliver from the Brady Bunch as Doctor Z(uugghh), and the Galactica children who could jump like Steve Austin due to Earth's gravity. I'm very sentimental for the 70's to mid 80's, but of all the years that Galactica found Earth, it had to be 1980. hehe The Starbuck episode isn't entirely good. I won't spoil it, but there's a revelation involving the Dr. Z character the few good moments of that episode. I'm still going to buy this series for old time's sake. It's pure unadulterated cheese, but I'm a guy who saw Flash Gordon and Cannonball Run at the theater that same year. Other than ESB, and a few others, it was a year of golden cheese!

    Galactica 1980

    by darth scourge

Yeah, I saw Galactica 1980 back in the day too, and even as a kid I was really disapointed that it was totally garbage compared to the awesome original season. Since then, I've watched it again a couple of times, done some research on Larson's thinking (or lack thereof) regarding its premise, and I still think it's terrible. Only the Return of Starbuck episode is at all worth watching.

Worse series ever! Nothing even comes close. Ahhhh .......so painful to watch! I remember my shock as a child watching that obomination. The obsession I had with the original Galactica...then the sadness of it being canceled. Only to be replaced by Gal 1980. It prepared me for all the disappointments in my life that were to follow. So in a way I am grateful to it.

first gal 1980. reused whatever was left over from the oriiginal, then he reused old sets and models, sound fx, whatever he could and came up with buck rogers. what a fall from grace that was....oh the shame

    Haven't forgotten Buck Rogers either

    by tylermo

Wal-Mart was recently offering the 2 season of B. Rogers for 20.00! Needless to say I scooped up that piece of cheese. Only bought it for sentimental reasons. Admittedly, it was leaps and bounds above Galactica 1980. The real question is whether or not Galactica 1980 is better than Jason of Star Command, or Space Academy. Probably so, because of the budget, but barely. Most people think the original Battlestar is shit. I totally disagree. It certainly had a few corny moments, but was near the top of the heap(apart from Star Wars). One might say Battlestar Galactica and the Black Hole were pretty decent for what they were. Then coming in several rungs lower were Buck Rogers, Galactica 1980, and the live action Filmation sci-fi programs. Either way, I remember those years fondly.

    by tylermo

It was Roger Corman's Magnificent Seven meets Star Wars motion picture! You had Sybil Danning, George Peppard, Robert Vaughn, and Richard "John Boy Walton" Thomas! What more could you ask for. Not to mention that Terminator producer Gayle Ann Herd, James Cameron, and composer James Horner working on that film. Horner's Battle score was later used for Star Trek II! True story. How would I rank Battle with the other films and series of that time? Better than filmation and Galactica 80. Maybe better than Buck Rogers. But, let's face it...it's all cheese. hehe

Remember back in the day, season one of Battlestar aired on Sunday night in the 8PM Eastern time slot, which caused it to constantly be pre-empted. We had a reason to fear the quality of G-1980 even before the show got started. The Galactica hour was bumped back to the 7PM Eastern time slot; reduced to the kiddie hour. That said for the life of me, to this day, I don't understand why the hell FOX put "Space Above and Beyond" in that same time slot years later, because that WAS a good show. Didn't know what they had I guess.

    Galactica 1980

    by virdon

This is a great example of a show I really wanted to like but couldn't. I was 15 when it came out and I was a huge fan of the orginal series. I was sick when it was cancelled. Then Starlog magazine arrived and announced the return of Battlestar Galactica as Galactica 1980. When I saw the cover of the magazine I was pumped up. Then I read the article about how there would be no Starbuck or Apolo and they would find earth and so it went. I began to suspect I was going to be unhappy with this incarnation. I remember watching the premier and thinking it was O.K. and would probably get better. Boy was I wrong each episode got worse than the one before. This piece of shit is so awful, you honestly have to see it to believe it. By comparison it makes the original series look like the best show ever made. I did hang in until the end and my patience was rewarded with a good episode about Starbuck. I still have that episode on VHS and it is good. I recommend searching ebay for the VHS of that one episode and skipping the rest of this series, unless you like watching cheesy shit.

    by letterdavidman

The most horribly miscast character in the show has got to be Larry Underwood. In the book (unabridged version, please) Larry Underwood rivals Stu Redman as my favorite character. Second most miscast character? Why, that would be the morbidly obese (we're talkin' HARRY territory, folks), feebily-acted Ralph Brentner. Yeah, HBO (even Showtime) needs to redo this someday. Soon.

Had zero problem with the casting of Ralph, but what the fuck was Garris thinking casting Corky Nemec as Fat-Ass Harold? I mean, I quite like Nemec otherwise, but he was totally wrong for the part. (King effuses over him in the DVD commentary, though, for what that's worth.)

Stargate Season Packs $20 at Walmart

    by gorrister

Just thought I'd mention it for anyone who hasn't gotten them yet. It's cheaper than the deal Amazon.com currently has going on them at the moment.

    The Langoliers

    by alientoast

Part one of that mini was excellent. Even though nothing happens, that unto itself is creepy as shit. It was an excellent buildup. Part 2, sadly, was stupid and full of CGI so bad it made ReBoot look like fucking Jurassic Park in comparison. The Stand, for a network mini, was actually pretty darn good. Esp parts 1+2.

I've always liked "We're all dead, and this is Hell"

    by chrth

It's amazing how often I've been able to use that line from the Stand in casual convo.

I love when Flagg pops out in the Rubber Demon Mask

by guy who got a headache and accidentally

Flailing around and shit. Classic. Plus that white man's blues Lethal Weapon-esque guitar noodling that serves as his background music. Oh yeah and I almost forgot, his entrance is the best entrance ever for a character who is evil incarnate. He's walking down the highway and sees a deer or whatever and zaps it with the most fake ass cgi electric bolt you've ever seen from his finger, kills the deer dead, chuckles a bit admiring his work, and keeps walking. I guess it really isn't that suprising that the last few dark tower books turned out so shittily.

After all, the lead is played by the same guy who played Holtz on ANGEL, which means that the show has a Joss Wheadon connection, which means that it must be a work of staggering genius.

    Stargate for 20.00 a season?

    by tylermo

Wow. I'll have to check that out. I was a pretty avid viewer of three other shows that raised the tv sci-fi bar...Farscape, Firefly, and Battlestar Galactica, but somehow didn't get around to watching much Stargate. For that price, I'll probably pick them up. Other great Wal-Mart deals include the old Buck Rogers for 20.00, and From Earth to the Moon for 25.00 Check em' out.
