Details on mega-cool "Ghostbusters" DVD

Published at:  Apr 12, 1999 6:12:14 PM CDT

Glen here...

...with some info re: the upcoming DVD release of Ghostbusters.

A while back, I was privileged to present some information from a dude over at a web site
named protoncharging.com. Said info was all
about the forthcoming home video release of the two Ghostbusters movies on DVD.

Now, proton charging has issued a new
report with some specific details about what we can expect to see accompany the first film once it
hits DVD. Here's what the site had to say (it should be noted they were quite accurate before, so
there's no reason to doubt them this time around):

proton charging says:

— The unofficial street-date for the new Ghostbusters DVD and VHS is
June 29th of this year.

— The DVD will also be DVD-ROM capable, with
links to www.ghostbusters.com (no word on
what gb.com will contain). Fans with DVD-ROM drives
should also be able to do screen captures right on
their PC.

— The DVD-ROM will contain an interactive
filmography of the cast and crew, creating a kind of
Ghostbusters six degrees of separation. All Columbia
movies contained in the filmography will have fact
sheets.

— The DVD will contain two original featurettes,
over 25 minutes combined. One is a retrospective
with Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ivan Reitman.
The other is a retrospective with over a dozen of the
special effects crew, including Richard Edlund, with
anecdotes about the effects, edited together with
footage from the movie.

— The DVD will contain 3 "art galleries" with a few
hundred storyboards, production photos, and
conceptual art (including the work of Bernie
Wrightson). Even cooler is that there will be a
contest to win some of the concept art (the DVD and
VHS releases will have a flyer about this).

— The art galleries will have examples of original
GB logo concepts, never before seen.

— The DVD will have running commentary from
Aykroyd, Ramis, and Reitman. There are a variety of
options available to access the commentary. Viewers
can watch the video of the three watching the movie
(imagine sitting behind them sitting on a couch,
watching the movie. That's what you see), or listen
to their commentary as an extra audio track while
watching the movie proper.

— The DVD-ROM will contain the original shooting script
(the one fans might be familiar with from Don Shay's
"Making Ghostbusters" book). Fans can read certain
scenes and then jump to the actual scene in the
movie to compare how the movie differs from the
original script.

— Production notes, some from Shay's "Making
Ghostbusters", can also be run as subtitles in sync
with the full length of the film.

— The DVD will contain close to a dozen deleted
scenes, some not even available on the Criterion
Collection Laser Disc. The four scenes I was able to
find out about were the scene of Bill Murray and
Aykroyd as New York bums, the honeymooners at
the Sedgewick Hotel, a destroyed Mr. Stay-Puft's
falling hat (photos of these scenes have been seen
in Shay's book), and a scene from the end of the
movie that I'll leave as a surprise.

— The DVD will use the "angles" feature, a feature
infrequently used in DVDs, to allow viewers to toggle
back and forth between the work print of the movie
(sans effects) and the final print.

— The DVD will use a split screen to allow viewers
to compare motion footage of original storyboards to
the final print.

— The DVD's menu is computer rendered in 3D, with
animated transitions to sub-menus (also CG).

— The DVD will feature trailers from GB, GB2,
Groundhog Day, and Stripes.

— the original "making of" featurette (???)

Ghostbusters 2 will also be issued on DVD (June 29), but it will not be receiving
the same delux treatment. There were rumors both titles would be issued as a
two-pack, this does not appear top be the case.

Glen again...

My god that GB1 DVD sounds cool, cool, cool...

Special thanks to proton charging for
sending in this information. Well done...

    Yeah Baby!!!!

It's about time that Ghostbuster's hit DVD. I'm so pumped that it's getting this kind of treatment too. I'm kind of upset that Murray and Ernie Hudson can not be apart of this DVD. What's up with with Murray anyway? It seems that once he's done with a movie he's done with the movie. I hear that he's not apart of the Caddyshack Special Edition either. Anyway, I know that I won't be lining up to see Episode 1 again on the 29th.

    the score?

    by zooty

with all the bounty coming on just one dvd it seems almost ungrateful to ask, but...any chance the disc will have the music score as well (elmer bernstein's music)? so far the only source i've seen for all that neat music has been a promo disc auctioned at over 200 bucks...a little steep for me. anyone know?

    Ghostbusters

    by w. leach

Ya know, back in 1984 or so (when I was in third grade), seeing GHOSTBUSTERS was the "in" thing among my friends and I. If you didn't see GHOSTBUSTERS, people in my class looked at you funny. Well, I saw the film during its original run, and thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. This was also the first time I was introduced to Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Sigourney Weaver, and Rick Moranis as well. For the school talent show that year, five of us played a record of the GHOSTBUSTERS theme song while two friends and I played the Ghostbusters. The other two guys played ghosts with white sheets over their bodies, and, armed with cool plastic toy guns, pretended to vanquish the ghosts. Unfortunately, the ghosts pretty much stood still while the song was being played, so us Ghostbusters had to run around the stage like fools. Needless to say we didn't win the coveted blue ribbon that year, goddammit. In '84 and '85, I was a Ghostbusters fanatic. I had the LP, the special book that said I was an "Official Ghostbuster", and various tie-ins from the movie. A few years later (by the time of the sequel), I had pretty much grown tired of Ghostbusters. I had discovered other works by the people involved with the movie (including vintage SNL reruns on Nick at Nite), and I thought Ghostbusters was kid's stuff (to this day, I don't think I've seen the sequel in its entirety -- just bits and pieces). Will I buy the DVD? You bet your ass. Even though I haven't seen this film in a long time, I'm kinda nostalgic for it. Plus, with all the extra goodies (isn't this what DVD was made for after all?) who could resist? Hopefully, I will enjoy the movie again, just as I enjoyed it at nine years old.

    by drexl aubuchon

Leach, I agree with you 100 percent. Come to think of it, I'm a little nostalgic for GREMLINS and TIME BANDITS also. But anyway, does anybody know if the Ray Parker Jr. music video will be included? I ain't afraid'a no ghosts!

    Seems awfully packed

    by bignupe

Am I to understand that there's a separate video track that contains the footage of the actors commenting...or are they to be digitally "superimposed" a la MST3K? With all these other features, a totally separate track seems like it would not fit. Maybe double-sided? It just seems to good to be true. Of course, if it IS true, then the features combined with the popularity of the title could well make it the best-selling DVD to date. It sounds like an early-adopters wet dream.

    Bignup Answers

    by joe buck

Bignup, the many DVD's are double sided. Originally these were the dreaded flipper's, where you have to turn the disc over half-way through the movie. But now with RSDL technology the disc is dual-layered so you get the storage capacity of two sides without having to flip the disc. Also the disc's themselves have had their capacity increased over what originally came out. DVD-18 has just been developed and is about to be put into production, this will add several more hours to the potential capacity of DVD's.

    audio commentary

    by poldenhike

To answer your question Bignupe, no, the actors aren't superimposed like 'MST3K'. I guess you've never experienced laser disc or DVD technology. There is capability to hear different audio tracks. The film images will run normally, but you chose if you want to listen to the regular film, or the artist commentary, or sometimes effects or the score itself can be isolated. The best audio commentaries I've hear over the years have been all of Gilliam's (he has done this on laser disc for every one of his movies except "Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas"), "The Princess Bride", "Taxi Driver", and all the living Pythons discussing "The Life of Brian". the 21st century is almost upon us. Join us, won't you?

Poldenhike - You misread, apparently there will be an extra VIDE

    by wesley snipes

Read the article more carefully. It says that you will be able to view a video of the _commentators_ watching it themselves.. as if you "were sitting behind them on the couch".. That's what bignupe was referring to I believe. I also agree with him that it seems like an awful lot to put on one DVD, unless they're going to go double-sided, dual-layered .. in other words, dvd-18.

    DVD

    by red7ine

ok, look, I've been kinda reluctant to jump on DVD due to my extensive VHS collection. Now I want to take the plunge, so could I get some advice from some coaxial readers? I don't have a fortune to spend, so keep that in mind. I have an above-average surround sound system, so are there anything I should look out for?
What I'm looking for is some options and what to look for in a DVD player. Brand names, extras, etc.

    by tom lee

I have *never* heard of a DVD with that much jammed on. Frankly, I don't think it's possible for them to do it. Watching reitman, murray and ramis watch the movie? That's a LOT of data with practically no point -- FAR more likely to just be an audio track. The only way they could *possibly* accomodate that would be to do a double-sided disc... and the added bonus of watching the back of bill murray's head isn't exactly the sort of thing I imagine a studio would sacrifice considerable computing resources to encode. So while the rest is certainly within the realm of possibility, the UBERDISC attitude with which this has been presented leaves me wary.
