Friday Begins Book Three Of AVATAR: LAST AIRBENDER!!

Published at:  Sep 22, 2007 2:20:34 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

“Avatar: The Last Airbender” is the cartoon series upon which M. Night Shyamalan wants to build a live-action movie franchise in the near future.

A reader, “Fiznu,” writes:

I think anyone with a TV and basic cable needs to tune in to Nick tonight at 8:30EST tonight. Season 3 premiers (FINALLY!) for one of the best shows currently on TV. For the uninitiated, do not dismiss Avatar: The Last Airbender as merely a cartoon, or a bastardized anime. This show has REAL WRITING, characters that you care about and some of the best production values of any animated series I have ever seen. Check it out!

AVATAR THE LAST AIRBENDER is far better than I would have expected, and it's actually building a great world and a great story. I'm eager to see how they bring the entire thing together, but for now, I'm content to just enjoy the ride, and I'm glad the new season's finally here.

    by angelopoulos

I watched it initially because my daughter became interested in it and it looked safe enough. I was blown away. It's epic enough for anyone who is a fan of great sci fi television. Don't be fooled because it's under the "nick toons" label. This show is to Nick what Battlestar Galactica is to Sci Fi.

So, I was being a jerk with that whole "Arrow" comment, but you guys are saying this is good, so now I'm listening. Are we talking "Cowboy Bebop" levels of good? And (keep in mind that) I'm an adult and I prefer to watch programs with a more adult sensibility, so... is this all just supernatural kids running amok, or what? Lemme know.

    by digitaldong

Too bad Dr. Who is on right now, lol. But Avatar does have a good story, awesome animation, and is mostly american made. But as said before, the writing is up there in the " whats this doing on Nick?" level. I got into it watching it in reruns, and Nick likes to not show anything in order, even when they play a marathon of it. all I know is every ep i seen has been good, and its got some kick ass action in it too.

    About time!

    by samuel vimes

Been waiting for this season since the COMIC CON preview...
And I second the 'I didn't know the show to be THIS good' sentiment: began watching it late in the first season, and the scope and complexity of the show's mythology completely pulled me in, and quickly became a regular viewer. With the depth of plot and character details, the show definately demands a second or third viewing--- and am waiting for the COMPLETE Season 1 and 2 Box Sets to be available (instead of the piddling partial-seasons that NICK's released so far).

... to start giving this show props. I started watching this show with my kids about a year ago. I, my son (3) and daughter (5) all love it. This is epic storytelling at its best. Can't wait to find out how it all ends over the last 20 eps. I can't believe the geek bandwagon is arriving so late to this show, it seems.

    by drath

Amazing how epic the show looks and feels. I can't believe they're able to get such great fight scenes, and then turn around and have genuinely funny comic relief. It's kind of like somebody took Harry Potter, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Princess Mononoke, put 'em in a blender, and still came up with something that doesn't feel hideously derivative.

    by drath

This show and the upcoming movie franchise take some unfair crap for using the same title as the King of the World's next movie, even though its obvious they were developed indepently of each other. I hope they don't rename this franchise because of it though.

    It's better than South Park...

    by immortal_fish

...with the analogizes that are drawn to current events, the overreaching tolerance, continual strife amongst peers, the eventual moral messages, and all the rest. But because this show doesn't follow the South Park formula full hog and BASH a certain demographic during each showing whilst preaching, none of you will ever give it a chance. And that's a shame. John From Cincinnati was also a sweet show with a positive message that was ultimately lost upon the masses. I fear the same for Avatar. Thankfully, Nick's renewal rate is way more forgiving than is the house of Carnivale.Trust me. Regardless of your age -- You're missing out.

I got seriously hooked on this show a few months back. It's definitely a little goofy at first, and is always first and foremost a kids show. But what everyone's saying about the writing is true. The characters are complex and likable and the overall arch is worthy of Joseph Campbell.

Now you won't find someone who gives less of a fuck about animation as me, but I LOVE this show. It has, by far, the best action sequences ever seen in any medium. it's also genuinely funny and has great characters. Anyone foolish enough to equate this show to some soul-less, cynical, incomprehensible piece of garbage like DRAGON BALL Z is missing out on a masterpiece.

    "Die Hard" Anime fans

    by alientoast

Most die hard anime fans, in my experience, never lived in an era when the only anime you could even find in the US was Akira, Vampire Hunter D, and about half a dozen tentacle rape flicks like Overfiend. As such, they are spoiled and snub their noses at something they feel isn't up to Japanese standards. Well I got news for you kids...while it's great there is tons of shit available now, %90+ of it is still crap. It's not a dig on anime, it's just a fact. The same can be said of lots of mediums, be it music or film. The point is when a good story comes along with solid characters, say like Berzerk or Cowboy Bebop, you enjoy it. Avatar, surprisingly, is one of those shows. Great concept, great characters, and an interesting story. Sure it doesn't have the "edginess", to say nothing of boobs n' blood, but it's still a solid show and one you can share with kids to boot, a big bonus if you're stuck babysitting and want to watch something you won't be bored to tears by.

James Cameron was smart to wait 10 years

    by drath

before making another movie so that the insanly hostile Titanic backlashers would burn themselves out and forget about their undying hatred of his arrogance, overexposure, and Leo Mania. Hey, I'm looking forward to his next movie also named Avatar, but between that and this, I prefer this keep the title. **************************** Also, to the person who asked if this is Cowboy Beebop good, as a fan of Beebop, I'd have to say yes it is. It's a different genre though, there is nearly no sexual material beyond young people kissing for the first time, but it goes from funny to dark as hell and has lots of action. It's a different genre, so it's not like they're the same (although both have elements of the Western). How many cartoons do you get where you're not sure everyone will survive to the end?

This show is awsome and to anime snobs out there i say this. I've been watching anime since the seventies, i'm in my thirties now, this show is better written than most of the anime i've seen. It doesn't get too convoluted in it's own self importance and actually both entertains and philosophizes. This show is better written than alot of the adult drama's that are currently hits.

Avatar the Last Airbender is an awesome show, in terms of writing , character, animation and humor and heart. Yes, genuine heart you can feel through the story. And kicks, punches and action you can feel, too.
You can go to TurboNick.com and view almost all of season 1 & 2 for free, just need to be patient. I also recommend IMDB just to see which order they are supposed to go in, because TurboNick has the episodes scattered with many different clips as well.

    Nice to be able...

    by red ned lynch

...to agree with the prevailing wisdom for a change. I am an anime snob. Started back in the 70s with Arcadia of My Youth. And when Avatar premiered on Nick I steered the kids as far away from it as I could without forbidding it. Watch some Galaxy 999. Watch some Totoro. They did, and I'm glad they liked those things, but they persisted in watching Avatar too. And since I like hanging out with the kids I ended up seeing way more of it than I wanted. And by slow degrees it won me over. Now I don't want to go too far here, or set up any false expectations. I doubt I would watch Avatar if my kids didn't love it. Life's too short, and there are too many great things to see. But if you have kids this is one of the good ones to let them love. And it won't hurt too bad if, like me, you love to watch what they love with them.

    by ironmuskrat

I fell in with the people who dismiss this show and a anime wannabe show with a funny looking kid for a hero. But my daughter of all people convinced me to sit down and watch an episode or two and I have to say I was a bit blown away by it.

Don't get me wrong, it is still a kids show at its core, but its not afraid to actually tell a story that you have to pay attention to over the course of the entire season. Also unlike a lot of shows on right now the various plot lines actually have a satisfying payoff.

    Alientoast....

by just another useless chump with a microp

I salute you. I got burned out on anime about 4-5 years ago. Like you, I grew up when the only anime you could find (apart from bigger name stuff like Gatchaman, Voltron, etc) was stuff like Ranma, Lum, Tenchi Muyo, Vampire Hunter D, Akira, Urotsukidoji, etc. When the biggest anime collection you'd ever seen was a stack of like 10 bootleg VHS tapes. Kids today don't get what that was like. They don't know the classics. I'm dating a girl much too young for me right now (I'm 28, she's 22), and she claims to be an anime fan. I've had to get BACK into anime just to school her on the classics. She'd never HEARD of Ranma, never heard of Vampire Hunter D! VHD was the first "adult" anime I ever saw, back when I was 12 yrs old!

That said, I have seen half of the first season of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and it was good. Very good. Not as earth-shatteringly awesome as some people seem to think, but I definitely think it showed promise, and I acknowledge that I've not given the show a chance to come into its own. I plan to watch the rest soon, especially now that my girlfriend is pushing me to watch it. If I can school her on the classics, she can school me on the new stuff. It works out well.

    by gearfree

It's only got this one season left(pending a fourth "air" book). You rarely see decent animation on nowadays, and even shows not finished production overseas get licensed for pickup. They flooded the market with crap, but at least there are a few mainstays around, for adults and kids(Venture Brothers and Fosters).

    Avatar is a solidly good

    by chaotic blue

Avatar is a solidly good show, but not perfect--it suffers occasionally from pacing problems and continuity hiccups, and anyone who didn't pick up the comics in the special edition Nick Magazine released earlier this month will likely be at least a little lost.

But that said, I will give this show a general endorsement. It's got some solid ideas behind it, and strong characterization. I'm glad to see this season _finally_ begin to air.
