Is THE BATMAN Morphing Into THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD?? Learn What Awaits Bats, Supes & LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES!!

Published at:  Sep 23, 2007 2:43:32 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

The DC superheroes return to Saturday morning this week after a long summer hibernating in their caves and fortresses and upside-down rocket-ship clubhouses.

“The Batman,” which garnered four daytime Emmys in four seasons, saw the caped crusader invited to join the Justice League in the big fourth-season finale penned by “Buffy” greats Jane Espenson and Doug Petrie.

So will Batman forget about the League in season five so he can just continue hunting down the likes of Riddler and Scarecrow? Not so much, according the folks at Warner Bros.

The two-part season premiere, titled "The Batman/Superman Story," teams the Caped Crusader with the Man of Steel -- again and for the first time -- when Lex Luthor begins hanging out with the Gotham City villains.

Over the course of the fifth season, The Batman will team with other members of the League, including Green Lantern, Flash, Green Arrow, Hawkman and the Martian Manhunter J’onn J’onzz. (Non-League DC icons Nightwing, Batgirl and Robin will continue to lurk about as well.)

With guest heroes come guest villains, so fans can expect – beyond Luthor and his hot henchwoman Mercy – the introduction to the series of Metallo, Toyman, Sinestro, Count Vertigo, Mirror Master, Black Mask and Scarface. (More traditional Bat-menaces like Joker, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Penguin, Clayface, and Mr. Freeze will be on deck as well.)

George Newbern, Dana Delany and Clancy Brown, who played Clark, Lois and Lex on “Justice League,” supply voices to “The Batman” this season. Others joining the cast or reprising roles from earlier episodes include Patton Oswalt (“Ratatouille”), Peter MacNichol (“24”), Louis Gossett Jr. (“An Officer and a Gentleman”), Dorian Harewood (“Full Metal Jacket"), Daryl Sabara (“Spy Kids”), James Remar (“Dexter”), Miguel Ferrer (“Bionic Woman”), Gwendoline Yeo (“Desperate Housewives”), Jerry O'Connell (“Crossing Jordan”), John Laroquette (“Boston Legal”), Charlie Schlatter (“Diagnosis Murder”), Mitch Pileggi (“The X-Files”) and Diedrich Bader (“Office Space”).

“The Legion of Super-Heroes,” meanwhile, brings big changes to its sophomore season.

“Legion’s” two-part season premiere, "The Man From the Edge of Tomorrow," centers on a 41st century Superman quasi-clone named Kell-El who travels back to the 31st century to get help with the near-omnipotent galaxy-crushing 41st century threat Imperiex. (In the funnybooks, Imperiex was a 20th century threat who wound up killing Maxima and Wonder Woman’s mom.) The worse news is Imperiex follows Kell-El and brings the fight to the Legion’s era, Terminator-style.

The Imperiex threat will form the arc of the entire second season.

The original 21st-century Clark Kent Superman, if you're wondering, returns to the 31st century older, wiser and generally more Superman-like, and gets to meet and fight beside his clone.

Other Legion members will discover old and lost relatives.

Those said to join the Legion this season include Chameleon Boy, Invisible Kid, Karate Kid and Dawnstar.

Yuri Lowenthal plays both Supermen. Imperiex is assayed by the great Phil Morris, who played J’onn J’onzz on “Smallville” and Jackie Chiles on “Seinfeld.”

“The Legion of Super-Heroes”: 11 a.m. Saturday. The CW.
“The Batman”: 11:30 a.m. Saturday. The CW.

The JLA movie post was true.

    by hercules

It just wasn't very timely (even though it was news to me). It was reported weeks ago that Routh and Bale wouldn't be in the JLA movie and that they were seeking different actors to play Superman and Batman.

    JL movie

    by telf

They are casting right now. No script has been released. They won't even tell people which characters they are auditioning for. The screen-tests are being done with scenes from other movies. It's very early days, so news is going to be slow in coming.

    by rbatty024

I enjoyed the one Batman episode that was an homage to Frank Miller, but that's the only good episode that comes to mind. I couldn't stand the Legion of Superheroes show. I guess not everything can be up to the level of Batman: The Animated Series.

    Not into "The Batman" myself

    by rocklobster800

I grew up with the Bruce Timm series and in my mind thats always the best incarnation of all the characters (especially Robin, who I cant stand elsewhere)-although I wasnt fussed about Catwoman in it...too toned down in her nastiness with all those animal rights adventures, Burtons version was better. "The Batman" seems a bit of a mess-its too childish, silly, too aimed at young teens and the theme tune is rubbish. Plus they know they cant beat Timm's incarnation which is why their Batman seems to look eerily similar to the one form the 90's. However their revamps of the other characters are atrocious-the Joker is, ironically, a joke, the Riddler is quite imaginative but doesnt work and the rest...well, suffice to say I cant watch it that much cos I get pissed off and turn over halfway through.

    by merlox

cause the snob in me just couldn't get past the absolutely shitty villain designs when it began. If it's gotten that much better I'll give it a shot, but when I see how horrid some of those character designs are it just makes me yearn for Timm and co.

    JLA movie

    by philvis

Why has AICN totally ignored the JLA news/rumors? They will post 1-18-08 rumors or show a picture of a bus destroyed by the Hulk, but won't mention any of the JLA news. Yesterday it was pretty much confirmed Welling is out for Superman and that there may even be a chance for Routh to reprise his role in JLA since the Man of Steel movie has been delayed apparently to make room for JLA movie. Ryan Gosling is also rumored to be a contender for Batman. I was hoping Welling would play Superman, but what can you do.

really, Ryan Gosling? Mofos gonna have to bulk up by God-plus hes got tough competition. Bale owned that role-although his Batman voice is a bit much but maybe he'll tone it down for the Dark Knight. You want a Batman voice-Kevin Conroy-thats what I want-Bale dubbed by Conroy. Only in the Batman scenes natch, his Bruce is perfect.

From what I have been reading on IESB and Bluetights.net, Batman will only be shown, not Bruce Wayne. I'm not sure about Gosling for it either. I sure don't want a big muscle rubber suit used to bulk him up. Yesterday they finally officially announced George Miller was the director on board for this. It will be a regular movie, not motion capture like some had stated before. I've got my fingers crossed they will do this right. I'm a sucker for a superhero movie.

    by philvis

I've been wondering why they are ignoring it as well. Im not a comic book reader, but I do enjoy the superhero movies, so I am looking forward to a DC movie like JLA. Sometimes I wonder about what is chosen to report on here. Someone needs to send a "spy" pic of a red boot or something and mention JLA and maybe then they will have a write up on JLA.

    Year one?

    by blackguard

At first "The Batman" was a year one take on the character. He made mistakes and was new to the whole hero thing. It seems they pulled a "Smallville" and just wanted to introduce all the future villians/other heroes as soon as possible. I mean he already has 2 kid sidekicks? I like that it is a "reimagining" of Batman but it seems to be getting closer to the regular old version. Bring back Justice League. THAT was a good show.

I have not seen these shows yet, so I will TIVO them this weekend and check them out. I definitely agree about the Justice League Blackguard. I think some of the complaints stem from that fact...I guarantee that the vast majority of AICNs readers view this as the one of the most exciting projects ever and just want to see more "official" TBs put up to discuss some of the other news and rumors going on with this movie. You guys never had one mention of the motion-capture possibility with the exception of a sentence by Harry in a BEOWULF TB. I think you guys posted A LOT more early stage rumors about Superman Returns and Batman Begins - I think using that same search box would prove it.

Why does WB insist on cannibalizing their properties?

    by darth busey

A live action JLA movie is a great idea, but one that will completely subvert the work done in the other live action properties like Superman, Batman, etc. Having different actors playing the same characters in different films is only going to piss off the fanbase.

Stick to a quality animated film, which uses the voice talents of Routh, Spacey, Bale, Neeson, etc. Makes everybody happy.

    Cannibalizing?

    by abin sur

Justice League has consistently been one of the top comics out of DC for years - I don't think anyone accuses the JLA comic of cannibalizing the Batman and Superman comics. Moviegoers aren't going to be pissed off because different actors may portray our heroes in different movies - if the movie is good and the acting is strong, that is ALL that the public will care about. Hell, a lot of times the public doesn't even need that (re: FF, FF:ROTSS).

WB have realised how stupid they were to cancel JLU. All the new season will do is remind fans of how good JLU was. And how is Nightwing going to fit in exactly? Another future era set episode? either way "The Batman" is being used by WB to get the kids hooked on the other characters. Sort of defeats the purpose of the show i feel. The closest they have got so far script wise , to the flagship comic was that Black mask episode way back. But beyond that hardcore fans will be left short changed.

I too miss JLU and Justice League, and have hope that in some way, even if it's a DTV movie we see the Timmverse again, but, Legion and The Batman are for kids, to sell action figures and happy meals. Sure they don't appeal to adults, they're not supposed to, Justice League did appeal to adults, and it wasn't supposed to, but it did. The writing was better obviously, so don't complain that these Saturday morning cartoons suck. Don't watch them, unless you're watching them with your kids. It's sounds silly when a man writes "I stopped watching when the Joker used martial arts." Should you have been watching in the first place? The Timmverse shows from the 90s were also aimed at kids and to sell toys and Happy Meals. The 200 Animated Series repaints (of just Batman) that I used to have on my walls prove it. There were thousands of toys or similar products released for all of those shows all over the world. Don't glamorize it by saying The Batman is just for kids and a toy commercial. You'll find countless interviews or audio commentaries from Timm and all of his assorted cronies saying over and over again that the old Fox show was a kid's show.

Your post makes no sense, it's like you're trying to call me out, but have nothing to back it up with. Do you want me to make a mistake so you can have a legitimate argument? Nightwing only appeared in the future! Also, this show would be a whole lot better if they got Kevin Conroy back to playing Batman. I'm sorry, but that voice cannot be topped. Rhino Romano is not Batman. He'll always be Edwardo the mench from Extreme Ghostbusters to me, never Batman. As for JLA moving into the show, clearly they are trying gear up for the JLA movie, and I'm okay with that except that I wish they'd just renew Justice League Unlimited instead. It's a much better use of Bruce Timm than more stand alone DC movies like Doomsday.

Instead of pissing money away on a live-action JLA,why not give Bruce Timm and Paul Dini and Kevin Conroy a shit-load of money and let them churn out animated direct-to-DVD movies from now till the end of time? The WB seems to create a property, take a few years getting it up to speed, and then when the fans and the critics are finally on-board they pull the plug and start all over again. as much as we love these characters you have to remember the programming and reboot is to sell toys and fast food. Anything else falls between the cracks. You'd be better off buying the JLU on DVD or writing WB in droves to release the complete series on DVD. WB is a corporate entity and doesn't care about a bunch of over 25 y.o. fanboys unless it costs them big time.

Newbern as Superman, Delaney as Lois and Clancy Brown as Lex without having Kevin Conroy as Batman. What a stupid show.

This show sucks Joel Schumacher's asshole.

    by pagliacci

Seriously, this is prime shit. Joker with dreadlocks? Goth Riddler? Yeah, go fuck yourself. The only official Batman is Bale, and in Nolan we trust.

I'll admit that the writing has gotten a tiny bit...

    by rbatty024

better. No longer is it the same old villain of the week story. On note villain shows up in Gotham. Batman figures out his M.O. and the two fight for the rest of the episode. Repeat for the entire first season. God that was awful. Still no B:TAS, but then again what is. I could live with the new character designs if they didn't make all the villains evil for evil's sake. In B:TAS each villain was just as interesting as Batman. In The Batman Mr. Freeze is a freekin' jewelry thief. There's no depth or humanity to these villains, they're just run of the mill crooks who happen to have superpowers. The show will never achieve more than mediocrity, but at least it's made its way that far since the first season was atrocious.

I came to enjoy The Batman, but now not so much...

    by prof. pop-cult

I liked the idea of a reboot which focused on a younger Batman/Bruce Wayne, who was just starting out. The addition of Batgirl before Robin worked well, too. But then the show quickly added Robin, and now it looks like the entire DC Universe is starting to be added -- WTF. Why didn't Warner Kids just start up a new JL series? Personally, I prefer my Batman as the loner. As for the JL movie version of Batman, why don't they cast an older actor and indirectly imply that the events of the movie take place several years (maybe 20 years) after the events of the Nolan/Bale movies? The fans and studio could then have it both ways: We get to see an older version of Bats (who will probably wear a different costume), and the JL movie's continuity wouldn't tread on that of the Nolan series.

    The Batman

    by snookeroo

was basically a re-boot designed to tie into the be-boot of the Batman movie franchise. The first couple of seasons were actually pretty good (some of the villain redesigns were kind of dopey). Beginning with the third season, however, with the introduction of Batgirl the feel of the series has changed to something decidedly lighter-weight.

Because that makes entirely too much sense. When has WB done anything that made sense, except by accident? WB operates under a paradigm that all super-heroes should be teen or early twenties and quasi-gay. Besides, it all comes down to this: WHAT SELLS TOYS. That's why comic-book movies are made. Period. Remember -- comic book movies make millions. Comic book TOYS make BILLIONS. See the math?

I will not be watching the Legion of Superheroes again. It's not my cup of tea. It was definitely geared towards smaller children, but good for them for having a show to watch other than a japanese card game promotional. I didn't think The Batman was all too bad. I am going to record them on my DVR and give them more of a shot. It wasn't the Justice League, but with the team ups, it will have to do.

    The Joker..

    by spiketbb

Is one of my favorite characters of any genre. So I was not impressed at all with them revamping him a Kabuki looking kick boxer. During B:TAS and JLA they changed all their looks to one degree or another from season to season. I keep hoping The Batman Joker will get done correctly, but I also believe in Santa Claus.
Joker being a skilled hand to hand combatent is a good thing, I think. In many a main stream Batman comic we've seen him beat Batman in a fist fight. But it's always been was fist fight, not kung-fu theater. This messed up version of The Joker is one prehensile tongue away from being The Toad from X-men: Evolution. It sucks.

    The Batman is shit

    by jacksparasites

I hate the villain designs. Then they changed a ton of things around. No Gordon. Instead a bunch of nobody cops. Then one of the cops (not named Matt Higgins) becomes Clayface? Now Batman is calling Superman "not very talkative"??? WTF! The whole dynamic is changed. Supes is supposed to be the boyscout. Bruce is the scowling, brooding one of the group. Then the JLA was founded without Superman? Superman founds the JLA. That's his thing. It's the most admirable thing about Superman that he unites the heroes together. Bruce is supposed to be the outsider. This doesn't work for me at all.

    It works....

    by benedict of amber

I, for one, loved it. I have all the Dini/Timm stuff from the beginning on VHS and DVD. I have animation cells, autographs, the whole nine yards. I remember watching Superman cartoons and Batman cartoons and Aquaman cartoons on channel 5 out of New York and WPHL17 out of Philadelphia. Sure WB is in it for the money, they ARE a business. But saying that Timm's stuff is the definitive take on the Batman is like saying that Neil Adams should only be the one that pencils Batman or Frank Miller should be the only one. These characters will be reinvented over and over again for different audiences and different sensibilities. I share the dislike of the Joker's original character design, and I really don't care for the voice characterization, but as the seasons have progressed, the more familiar purple pinstripe tux and tails has appeared, and the dreads have given way to a more wild shaggy hair. The fact that a lot of people are still pontificating about this particular fact doesn't really give me the impression that they have a lot of room to talk about the current state of the show. While I loathe Hercules' slavish devotion to everything even remotely connected to Buffy ("I was out with Jane Espenson and she wiped with Charmin so IT IS THE BEST

So go on and like or dislike whatever you want, but don't keep watching if you don't like it. You have full dvd sets of everything Dini/Timm/McDuffie ever did. Including TEEN TITANS which - if you want to talk about not exactly being true to its roots and NOT being a definitive take look no further - Timm produced.

    Be seeing you,

    B.O.A.

Score. The Batman: 4 Superman Doomsday: 3

    by stalkeye

Seems that Timm's magic is wearing thin especially since Dini and Mcduffle had no creative input while producing the direct-to-DVD,that is SD.
The season opener of the Batman was better than I expected, villians galore, the rivalry between bats and supes and two words: Clancy Brown!

Finale and Opener vs Superman: Doomsday

    by lev_harris

I have to agree with Stalkeye. This thread made me go look up the season finale and opener of The Batman, which I don't watch, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. After the huge let down that was Superman: Doomsday, I can hardly complain about this. And as for bitching about the way characters in new stories are SUPPOSED to be? I don't really mind that Batman was trying to convince Superman to join the league. These stories get re-written over and over, and only through trying again and again do some eventually end up better than others. Paul Dini wrote an episode for The Batman in which Harley Quinn is introduced to the series, and rumor has it that it might be both different and better than the original. It's next on my list.

Snookeroo: WB movie division calls the shots

    by mgthedj

They ordered "Justice League Unlimited" shut down and ordered the "Crisis" stuff in the comics these past few years to tie into the re-launch of Batman and Superman movies. They have restricted characters from appearing on "JLU", "The Batman", and even "Smallville." In other words, if you are not a male MOVIE director you do not have total creative freedom. As for the shows, they are OK. The producers have implied that the first season of "The Batman" was a mistake and have done a decent job of digging out of that hole. These shows are what they are: shows geared towards kids born after 1996.------later----m

    I liked the opener

    by pjryan519

The opener didn't suck at all. The Batman seemed to be created to sell toys at first, now it seems to want to tell stories. Who really cares if the stories have been told already. What bothers me most about the movies and cartoons is: If all of this destruction was really happening...wouldn't other "heros" show up? Let's see more stories like that.
