GALACTICA Spinoff CAPRICA Finding New SciFi Traction??

Published at:  Sep 20, 2007 2:01:33 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

An excerpt from James Hibberd’s TV Week story about an Emmy-night SciFi Channel party:

Most recently presumed a dead project, Sci Fi executives seem to have renewed enthusiasm for [the “Battlestar Galactica” prequel “Caprica”], especially with the looming prospect of losing [“Galactica” mastermind Ron] Moore following the conclusion of “Battlestar.”

Additionally, the story confirms that SciFi is contemplating holding back “Galactica’s” final ten episodes until 2009 – a move that would apparently please NBC Universal’s accountants, even as it infuriates the show’s rabid fan base. TV Week’s source says SciFi will decide in January.

Under this plan, two hours of the series’ final 20 hours would arrive in November as the “Razor” TV-movie, eight would begin unspooling in January 2008 and the final ten would reach their audience in 2009.

Another excerpt:

Moore’s storyline also could make fans demand rapid closure, one person close to the project says, since “when people see the ending of the 10th episode, they’re gonna freak out.”

Increasingly, studios seem to becoming more and more disrespectful of their audience, largely because executives with no love of the material or format are taking control. This is BSG split is the dumbest, most hostile move I've seen a studio make recently...and that's saying something.

frakkin Finance Bean Counters don't measure things

    by chromedome

...the way any normal person does. Splitting the season, and therefore the dvd sales, too, allows them to assume income/cash flow for two years. At the company I work at, the finance people always report the budget situation, not in dollars, but in Headcount. "We are currently 100 heads over budget" The only thing they can think of to save money is to lay off employees.Plus, they define terms so that they can take credit for money (accounts receivable) that they have NOT ACTUALLY RECEIVED yet, and claim it in their financial statements.I left a company once because they pulled almost all the workforce in every Christmas to New Years to stuff boxes full of loose chassis, cards, wires and parts, and ship them to customers. They could then pump their year-end financials by taking credit for the billed items, and then "repair" the boxes of crap "under warranty". Fortunately, they are out of business now.Try that with your bank: oh, yea, I didn't have the actual CASH in the checking account, but I have a years worth of paychecks coming during the coming year. I just credited them to my account now...

BSG could potentially launch a new universe as big as all the Star Trek series; it certainly has just as much character and as many fresh ideas. In addition to Caprica, I'd also be curious to see a spinoff of how the humans acclimate to Earth, in whatever state it is when they finally reach it.

Pretty sad if that's what they intend

    by charon

I got into this series a bit late in the game. I've enjoyed it as it has progressed, but not overly so. Science Fiction as a genre can go pretty much anywhere it damn well pleases, and with the weekly format the Sci-Fi Channel dedicated to this quality series I enjoyed watching it unfold, even with the slightly stilted or forced weekly 'topical dramas' that they worked in.
But you know what? It's this series that put the Sci-Fi Channel on the map, and of course they're going to milk it, like Fox milked "The Simpsons" almost 2 decades ago. Thing is, that was like, 20 fucking YEARS ago. Sci-Fi's reliance on this split-season tactic was appalling even last season when they used it. Loss of weekly viewership proved it. Do it again, it's alienating an already pissed-off fan base. The posts above are pretty indicative of that. Split the final season and fans may just have to bail and go back to better-written sci-fi in the form of books, magazines or online short stories. At least there's a wealth of Battlestar Galactica characters we can now imagine dropped into new stories taken on in a wholly undiluted form known as imagination.

    Dear SciFi Executives,

    by cheeseofcheese

From even skimming some of the comments here, do you think you are doing the right thing with this property?
There is only so far you as an alleged TV network can do to a show's fanbase without completely alienating them. In all sincerity, do consider what has been said above, because it's looks as though your potential 'reach' is going to be severely reduced if you do decide to split the final series of Battlestar in the way that has been proposed. You viewing audience has to buy in to your ability to provide content people actually wish to consume, when being treated with a modicum of respect. What you propose seems entirely at odds with that premise.

They can't see the forest for the trees here. Sure, they'll have and extra year of programming or whatever, and I won't lie to you I'll watch it whenever it comes back on, but they're taking all the momentum away from it by stretching it out like this. I can't see any scenario where they don't lose at least 30 percent of their audience for the last 10 eps because they either just plain forget about it or get so annoyed with it that they just stop watching.

    Splitting the season in two

    by sammy jankis

Splitting the season in two will allow Universal to charge $35 each for two box sets instead of the $45 to $55 for one season as they are currently charging. I believe for awhile after Season 2 was first released you would have had to pay upward of $80 for the complete season.

I am so F'ing tired of Science Fiction franchises charging double the going rate for a season on DVD compared to other shows. A season of Dr. Who is currently $70 on Amazon. I know they have higher production costs, but they would sell more sets if they simply priced them at a reasonable point instead of saying, "ah, the fanboys and geeks will buy this no matter what we charge so screw 'em!".

It seems to be a nasty pattern with the SciFi channel

    by crichtonastronut

that they finance a really good series, build it up and put get it in the public eye and just when it starts getting rave reviews cancel it.

This is exactly what they did with Farscape. They even split the season, the last two seasons actually. But season three was the really bad split.

And just like BSG they were starting to get good reviews. Articles in TV Guide and Entertainment Weekly. And then Cancelled.

I knew when EW started professing their love for BSG, when reviewers started calling it the best show on television that its days were numbered. Isn't that sad by the way. When you know a series will be cancelled because it is good.

It's like the whole reason for this network has become: to gather the best Science Fiction shows together and eliminate them. I see her people gathering film reels together on an open field and linng up a firing squad to kill them all, like the human resistace on New Caprica.

The 2009 layover a financial decision - intended to grab however many new viewers they can, sell DVDs to get them caught up on the show's mythology, and convince advertisers that as many or more eyeballs will still be there for the show when the last 10 episodes make it to air. And yeah, the bean counters can split the revenues from this show over two years, just in case Sci Fi's 2009 fiscal year otherwise doesn't look so hot. The downside? None. Hardcore fans like us will bitch about the show and the network heads on AICN talkbacks, but we'll still watch the show and buy the DVDs. "Lost" is pursuing the same strategy.

    by domi'sinnerchild

Isn't the point, ratings? I'm no TV executive or accountanty, but isn't 8 episodes is more a mini-series than an actual show? How exactly do they sell that to advertisers especially with the fan base getting pissed off ("we kicked ass during sweeps, how many episodes we got left? Two? Uh, I guess that's plenty, charge double!")? Sure, you break up the DVD box sets, but they already did that last time with just a gap rather than having to break the season up over two years. I just don't get the Sopranos model here. You subscribe to HBO, Sci-fi is advertising based so it theoretically needs as many new episodes as possible to generate higher ratings when competing networks are likewise showing first run programming.

    Dear Ms. Hammer,

If what I hear about breaking up the final season of BSG into two parts (the finale airing in 2009!?!) is true, I will have a hard time watching the Sci Fi channel again.

Your recent decisions to greenlight the Power Rangers-like 'Flash Gordon'
(which I'm sure will be cancelled in the next year), 'Painkiller Jane,'
'ECW' and failure to pick up the well-reviewed 'Lost Room' backdoor pilot have disheartened me to the point where I can no longer claim to be a Sci Fi Channel fan.

In Australia (and anywhere outside the USA), we can't even download BSG on iTunes. So it's torrents ftw. Dear gods I hope season 3 is leaked. I'll be downloading every episode and telling SciFi to shove it where the sun don't shine. Yeah, Lost is going with the split season format -- but it's pissing off a lot of overseas fans who have to avoid the internet for a year so they don't see spoilers. It's harsh, fucking harsh, to only see 10 episodes then have to wait a year. Ah well, I may as well make my prediction here: when the RTF find Earth, Baltar discovers EVERYONE is a cylon... except him, he's the last surviving human. That's how it'll end. Too bad I'll have to wait until 20-frakking-12 to see that. Frak you SciFi. Unless the cartoon Eick and Moore beat the crap out of Bonnie in their little end-of-credits thing.

    P.S...

    by christopher3

Sci-Fi rarely schedules its "event" programming against competing first-run network programming. They typically get their best ratings from their December miniseries, when the networks are asleep. To me, scheduling the remaining season of BSG as effectively two miniseries makes more sense than what they did with the third season, which was BSG's first "conventional" fall-spring network season, and which, IMO, suffered from too many unnecessary and unsatisfying stand-alone episodes. I'd rather Moore and Co. end the series with some quality storytelling rather than writing filler to satisfy a standard 20-show-per-season commitment.

    by kap'n kek

Look, I hate to be a bitch about this, but as a fairly eager fan who has gotten several others into this show who would not have otherwise, it'll be embarrassing. You guys are not going to pick up any more viewers, and will certainly drop some, such as myself. Love the show, but I'm already kinda disconnected from it with the hiatus we've got. Ten episodes and another year wait will be the nail in the coffin for me and many casual viewers like me. End the damn show on a high note, and find some other programming quick-like. If you wanted BSG in 2009, you should have extended the series to another season.

    by ironmuskrat

The powers that be at Sci Fi know 90% of the original programming it puts out is steaming shit. They know on average they produce a popular, quality program about once every five years or so. I guess it natural for them to try and drag BSG out as long as they can hoping they can find another nugget of gold in that huge pile of crap(aka Sci fi channel).

Waiting that long for 8 episodes is crazy. There is no point in getting excited about a mere 8-10 episodes. Life is too short (as is BSG seasons). The excitement of this show is over. There are too many other things to do than watch a tv show that has storylines dragged out for years. I say patiently wait for a DVD collection, then enjoy. Let's don't reward sponsors for a show that is dragged out.

    Season Four

    by cobbio

I hope SciFi airs all 22 BSG episodes, including "Razor," in 2008. Not that my opinion means anything, but I want a full season of action and build up. I really don't want to wait another year for BSG's conclusion. Especially with the mostly unwatchable shows SciFi is airing now.
As for "Caprica," I say hell yes! I'd love to see a lighter but inevitably darkening series set in the BSG universe. The Cylon Rebellion, or watever its called, would be an amazing drama to introduce. Characters would obviously need interesting arcs and development as the story gets told, but there's a lot there for writers to sink their teeth into. I don't expect the series to happen, but I'll be sitting there in my living room with food and beverages and bells on to see the pilot if it airs. Hope it does.

    by performingmonkey

They're shooting a regular 20-episode season. If they were actually PLANNING two 10-episode seasons, shot over 2 years, then this would be a COMPLETELY different story. We would be getting 10 balls-to-the-frakking-wall burn-your-face-off episodes with no fillers and everyone would love it. However, instead we will get 10 episodes with around 5 that don't even advance the story. Wow, a great 'season'... I hope SciFi closes down if they go ahead with this.

First, I will walk around the country like Bruce Banner in the old Hulk show (which you don't show anymore, assholes) and find Nielson houses and make sure they give you crap ratings. Like really bad. I will convince them to print out your logo and wipe a shit stain on it and send it to Nielson headquarters. Second, and this will be a little tricky, I will win the lottery and build a giant metal fist with a middle finger sticking up and fire it into space and fingerbang your satellite into the sun. In all likelihood I'll just Netflix the last season of BSG and bitch and complain endlessly. I know you still get your green in the end, doesn't matter though. by bswise

You feeling any love today, SciFi? I resisted BSG for a long time, and really just started liking it a few weeks ago, and maybe I’ll even get back to it in a couple of years, but there is no way that am I going to start following the arc of season 4 if they stretch it out that long. Sure, this approach makes sense to Suit 1 and Suit 2, but, c’mon, this is a big “frak you” to the audience. And, yes, they did do the same frelling thing to Farscape, cut it’s budget, split it up, and moved it here and there, all at the height of its popularity. More proof of my longstanding theory that the sole purpose of a TV executive such as Bonnie Hammer is to ensure than nothing TOO GOOD (as in, TOO EXPENSIVE) stays on the air for very long or even gets there in the first place. No, to keep the system humming, the suits need cheap and they need mediocre, and lots of it. Anything above the lowest common denominator will raise the bar higher than they are willing to go. For example, Caprica sounds like another earthbound, shot-in-the-woods, everyone-looks-like-a-Canadian cheap-fest. Oh well, at least we’ll supposedly be getting a few new Farscape “Webisodes.” Frelling crumbs as those are, I welcome the day (coming soon) when a quality series can be produced far away from those meddlesome networks. On that note, I’m looking forward to Zwick and Hersovitz’s “Quarterlife.”

We are an economic consumer force

    by geodesigns

There should be industry standards against what the SCIFI programming channel execs just did to Battlestar Galactica, Flash Gordon, and all our favorite cancelled shows. It’s obvious they can currently get away with canceling favorite shows, stretching out air dates like BSG final season and air half in 2008 and the remaining half in 2009. They can get away with ruining a respectable and iconic property such as Flash Gordon. The overpaid, incompetent SCIFI Channel bean counters and programming execs just care about money, and the décor of their plush studio offices. They care about their own parking space, if their office has a window and the trappings of the senior executive lifestyle. THEY ARE NOT GENRE FANS. Don’t think for one minute they care about what your favorite shows mean to you.

Money talks, and when it comes to TV programming, viewer choice perceived by Nielsen ratings and advertising sponsor money. That’s what the SCIFI Channel’s bosses look at. This is old school. This system is analog, pre-digital, pre-internet age.

Fan-driven sites like AICN, IESB, LatinoReview, Superherohype, IGN, Rotten Tomatoes, Dark Horizons (and many more such as theses), have taken the initiative to have an online presence to show you upcoming projects and have a forum to post your opinion. I think this is a step in the right direction. The people who run these sites are genre fans just like you and me. They get as exited in a project as you do, and as disillusioned as you become when it does not meet our fan-driven personal expectations. And believe me, industry professionals take notice. Hell, they’re reading our postings right now.

    Here’s where we come in.

I propose we create an internet-networked, worldwide online entity called (for example) the Viewership Consumer Coalition (VCC), with the mission of having a pro-active organized voice to speak to movie, TV, videogame studios and publishers. Any project they want to put in the production pipeline to end up in theatres, air on TV, release as a game, DVD or other viewing media, the VCC can be an entity that has YOUR say in it.

    The VCC is us.

Anyone could sign up on the website of this proposed entity and cast your vote.

The entertainment industry needs a reality check for the 21st century. The Nielsen Ratings is simply old school and is no longer reflective of our perceptions. You all know that’s true. Anyone download a show? How would Nielsen know if you liked that episode? The VCC can not only be your voice and tell them not only if you and millions of others liked it or not, but make them listen to you if they really want a hit on their hands by having a VCC liaison or representative involved in the production. “The VCC was actively involved in the making of this movie”. The VCC can be a poll-driven and opinion-driven organization that can be comprised by consumers just like you and me, who can interact with entertainment industry producers and sponsors through a VCC liaison. We can tell producers early on what we think about a project in development, and we can tell the money people early on if we as consumers have confidence in the project or if will bomb. We can tell the money people that if producers don’t go with your VCC recommendations, we won’t go shell out money to see this in theatres, we won’t buy the DVD, or the game.

This can be a way that we can send a message to both producers and financers of what we as educated and passionate genre consumers think. This way everybody wins. I’m sure there are entertainment producers who don’t set out to produce a bad TV show or a bad movie. I’m sure that there are TV sponsors that were convinced to plunk down their money sponsor a TV show thinking it will be a hit. I’m sure there are some people within both those entities who put their sincere energies into the project and feel disappointed in themselves if we absolutely hate what they produced. An organized genre-centric, educated consumer economic force such as the VCC can offer our opinions early on. We can tell them early on if this is watchable or not. We can tell them early on if we’ll buy the game, buy the DVD, buy the movie tickets. We can tell them early on if their production is buzz-worthy are an absolute sleeper.

Some of the current SCIFI Channel’s programming execs will absolutely hate the notion of a VCC because we’ll actually take some of their power away from them. But it’s to their best interest. Mass boycotts, negative publicity campaigns, low Nielsen ratings, petition for a specific industry professional’s resignation and low public opinion of a project can all be avoided if they invite one of your VCC representatives to observe a project in development, take pictures and video samples of the production, share with the registered online members, and come back to them with your opinions by sending them a VCC Assessment Report, along with your recommendations. This way, we can actually contribute to having a high ratio of well-received productions in a given year. When you go to the store and buy a DVD with a label “Certified WAY COOL by the VCC” in its DVD box package, you as a consumer had your part in ensuring this production was the best it possibly could be.

Think of it. WE ARE AN ECONOMIC FORCE. If anyone else can think of a better way to have the power to avoid what happened to high quality shows like BSG, Farscape, and other productions that were well-intended but failed in the end, please come up with something. I’m nobody important. I leave it in your hands. The old school production business model is just not working anymore. Just remember, power swings both ways. So far, they’ve shown their muscle. Now let’s show ours.

Harry, Quint, Moriarty and AICN crew, thanks so much for what you do. You have my respect.

ok where do i sign up. i couldn't agree with you more the problem is that they are playing by outdated rating system that has been proven incorrect well before downloads and itunes etc. i don't watch battlestar on TV and although i am a hardened fan my viewership doesn't count. If the internet is opening a bottom up appraoch to distribution lets get serious. if done properly this may start to place the creative aspect of production higher in the food chain instead of the bean counters. if Sci Fi execs had the tools to truly figure out which shows are were thier strongest then they would know how position them better. better shows creates trust and trust creates a die hard channel fan base that will consider sc fi logo as a stamp of approval. it seems like a win win win situation. good creatives have the back up to make good shows, viewer get good shows and bean counters would get more money because they have good product.

its clear that they don't know how to deal with this fan base. they are attempting this whole online synchronisity with BSG and heroes but the whole thing seems to be ringing a bit false and heavy handed. they are trying to answer this phantom popularity from the internet but what seems to be eluding them is that they are doing it so poorly that they are pushing against their good fortune. to put it simply its time for them to listen to the internet instead of trying to dictate to it.

I never saw the pilot for "Global Frequency," but after reading your post I went to www.globalfrequency.org and checked it out. Holy shit... the description reduces the X-Files to pure stupidity in comparison. Michelle Forbes was Miranda Zero? Why the hell didn't I hear more about this?
    Grrr.

BSG on FX would be a smart move

    by nohubris

Ryan Murphy, Nip & Tuck producer, has been allowed to keep his "unique, singular voice" in producing the show.

Here's a link to an article on TV.com that talks about Murphy's relationship with the network. It looks like FX supports his vision and doesn't get overly involved in what Murphy is trying to dohttp://tinyurl.com/326lffPlease note that the article might be a bit slow in loading.

Thank gods I fixed my time machine

    by drak_tanner

See, I don't have to worry about effing network scheduling and waiting week after week and month after month for the next episode.

    See:
Time machine + Netflix = Watching WHOLE SEASONS of goodness at my leisure

Holy shiznit, guys, you are not going to freaking believe the last five eps of LOST Season 4. Holy fat-laden Christ on a pancake.

You know why you never heard more about GLOBAL FREQUENCY? Because WB are linking the average IQ of one of their viewers to that of a vegetable, and GLOBAL FREQUENCY was just too damn smart.

The pilot was awesome. If you really want to weep for the hit that never will be, go read the two graphic novels, GLOBAL FREQUENCY: PLANET ABLAZE (Vol 1) and GLOBAL FREQUENCY: DETONATION RADIO (Vol 2). The 12 best sci-fi series episodes we will NEVER get to see.

And yes, Michelle Forbes as Miranda Zero kicked every kind of ass. Fucking perfection.
