The ELEVENTH HOUR Is Bruckheimer Time!!

Published at:  Sep 19, 2007 11:12:24 AM CDT

Merrick here...

CBS has won a bidding war over rights to Warner Bros/Jerry Bruckheimer's forthcoming adaptation of a British miniseries called ELEVENTH HOUR, which aired last year.

"Eleventh Hour" aired as a four-part miniseries in Blighty last year, with Patrick Stewart starring. Thesp played Professor Alan Hood, who's called in by the government to investigate mysterious cases that involve matters of science -- from cloning to global warming. U.S. adaptation is said to have a tone similar to "The X-Files."

...says THIS ARTICLE IN VARIETY.

This sounds quite similar in theme and tone to a well-produced ABC series back in 1999, called STRANGE WORLD. It was a mighty atmospheric piece spearheaded by Executive Producer Howard Gordon of BUFFY, ANGEL, X-FILES, and now 24.

Despite Gordon's track record, STRANGE WORLD didn't do so well. It'll be interesting to see if shows of this nature are simply cursed, or if Bruckheimer's patented style will be enough to tip this one through the hoop.

    Get the name right...

    by snappy

How can you trust Variety when its journos can't even be bothered to check out IMDB and discover Stewart's character was Professor IAN Hood - not Alan. Ashley Jensen, of Extras and Ugly Betty fame, was also in the miniseries as Hood's Special Branch bodyguard. If they remake this, they could just recast Stewart & Jensen & let them practice their American accents.

    Great idea... bad execution

    by grayson76

I saw this when they aired it on BBC-America. I love Patrick Stewart, from ST, to X-Men to his stage work (which is incredible).

The show was bad. Badly written, badly executed. The acting was as good as could be done with crap cliched writing.

And it wasn't a mini-series. It was a cancelled series due to ratings.

Great show. More Science-fact than fiction.

    by sequitur

It would take potenially science-fiction-esque stories and explain them realistically. No aliens, mystical creatures...etc.
To sound like a Hollywood producer:
    "It's X-files meets House"

Where's the 24 talkback about how they're bringing TONY back from the DEAD? Cuz they are, and I can't decide if it's a good move or the stupidest plot development yet.

didn't this bomb in the UK?

    by newc0253

i think it was on ITV, which explains why - despite the presence of Patrick Stewart - nobody with detectable neural activity would have been caught dead watching it.

    It will be ruined.

    by wowsah156

The eleventh hour was a satire about how monstrous science had become and what it was doing to humanity. I found it to be a good tribute to the old Quatermass series. Just the idea that someone like Bruckheimer who made his money from 90 minute pyrotechnic cumshots, is going to be involved in something this subtle suggest that the stories will suffer for Shampo advert CGI masturbation.

...on this shitty lump of shit? Even a great thesp like Patrick Stewart couldn't save this dull turkey.

Worst home-grown sci-fi of last year.

Still hoping for STRANGE WORLD DVDs...

    by roguewriter

There were a couple truly memorable episodes, and lead actor Tim Guinee was marvelous. Kristen Lehmann was also memorable, and the show certainly raised her profile enough to get cast in a lot of things since. Guinee hasn't been so lucky, alas (I blame lookalike Martin Henderson for taking all his roles!). Anyway, we'll give this one a whirl, based on the STRANGE WORLD reference alone!
