Anchor Bay statement re: "The Black Hole" DVD recall

Published at:  Apr 08, 1999 5:02:47 PM CDT

Glen here...

...with a follow-up to HREF="http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/display.cgi?id=3391">yesterday's report about
Anchor Bay's recent release of The Black Hole on DVD.

In yesterday's
article
, I slammed Anchor Bay for being too slow to act & respond to consumers regarding the
widely reported troubles many have experienced with the surround sound on The Black
Hole
DVD. I asked something like "Where is Anchor bay in all this?", yadda yadda yadda.

The reasons for my antagonism towards Anchor Bay were simple: I'd contacted several key
DVD retailers across the country, and none of them had heard anything about Anchor Bay's plans to
make this wrong situation (a DVD pressed with screwed-up sound) right. They only knew that the
product was defective, and were telling customers to wait (sometimes for as much as a week longer)
for some kind of answer from Anchor Bay. As such, I was annoyed - feeling it was incumbent on
AB to address this issue pointedly and promptly.

Turns out - Anchor Bay has addressed this issue pointedly and promptly. Why many
national retailers of DVDs are currently unaware of Anchor Bay's plans to rectify The Black
Hole
situation is beyond me. Perhaps word simply has not filtered down to them yet? None the
less, here's Anchor Bay's statement of intent re: The Black Hole DVD.

((Glen Note: Many people have e-mailed me this press release. But, I'm not clear on where it initially came from. I know it's available at the digital bits web site, which
may also be its point of origin...))

"Last week, we received reports of a problem with the 5.1 sound in the DVD
release of the sci-fi thriller The Black Hole. We've confirmed that there
is a problem in the sound on channel 5 of the Dolby 5.1 mix. The problem
should be noticeable in the Dolby 5.1 mode only.

"As a result, Buena Vista Technical Services will deliver a new DLT on
Saturday April 10, 1999. Anchor Bay Entertainment expects to ship the
corrected product by April 19, 1999 and will take care of any retailer or
individual customer who has experienced a problem."

In other words, this is now a recall. My suggestion is: if you've purchased this disc, contact a
salesperson wherever you purchased it - and either return the disc (and by a new one in a few
weeks), or make the necessary arrangements to have your old copy swapped out for a
non-defective copy.

THANK YOU< Anchor Bay, for doing the right thing here - and so quickly. Didn't mean to
slam you inappropriately - although those national retailers should maybe be a little better informed
;-)

    Video Retailers

Let's face it, the retailers are the last to know because they (for the most part) don't want to get off their lazy tushes to find out! They've got your money already, so why bother making more work for themselves.

    DWD: DVD NEWS

    by dwdunphy

I know how busy it's been lately at AICN, so I figured I'd just throw up these tidbits in the TalkBack rather than bog y'all down with another e-mail. These upcoming DVD release dates are from Ken Cranes and from Image Entertainment (where applicable)...ARACHNAPHOBIA (LTX,DD) $29.98 $20.99 6/15/99
(and it's about time Disney got to it's other live actioners)

    BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (LTX) $24.98 $17.49 6/8/99
(featuring the theater ratio... Very cool!)

    CLERKS $29.98 $20.99 6/29/99
(Be warned... It's retail is about $30... far lower than Miramax's usual releases meaning this is probably a 'movie-only' release)

    LAST STARFIGHTER (LTX,DD) $34.98 $24.49 6/8/99
(Fear not, LD fans... UNI is also releasing a signature collection laser of this!)

    MALLRATS (LTX.DD,COLLECTOR'S) $34.98 $24.49 7/20/99
(The long-awaited director's cut is coming!!!)

    SO I MARRIED AN AXE MURDER $29.98 $20.99 6/1/99
(To capitalize on Austin Powers 2, no doubt)

    STIR CRAZY $29.98 $20.99 6/29/99
    (Wilder and Pryor's funniest)

    DVD Porn

    by sws

Well, technically not porn, Ken Cranes does have some Playboy discs I believe. They probably have others since the porn industry pretty much paves the way for new tech. hehe
