No more POMPEII for Polanski!!

Published at:  Sep 12, 2007 12:02:08 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Roman Polanski was supposed to helm the giant $100 million epic POMPEII, but they've put the kibosh on it because 2008 is the year of looming strikes. We've heard about the Writer's strike, but what hasn't been talked about as much is that both the Director's Guild and Screen Actor's Guilds have contracts expiring in June, so there's more than a small chance we'll be seeing the power politics shit being played out again.

It's because of these looming strike possibilities that agents aren't committing their clients to appearing in anything after June 30th. That is fucking the 18 months of preproduction that has gone into this giant flick and Polanski has decided to shelve it.

The good news is that if there is a quick deal and no strike, then Polanski's still onboard, not taking another project in the meantime. Hopefully RUSH HOUR 4 doesn't get put on the fast track where he'll be tempted to embarrass himself some more on the big screen...

    I hate to say it...

    by strabo

...I'm normally the first guy to jump in and defend Polanski, but making (purported, I haven't seen it) forced anal sex jokes just seems inappropriate to me. Other than that though, I really love his films. The Pianist is pure cinematic gold.

I arugued with some douche back then about him trying to fuck a little girl and he said it was entrapment.. The point was, he really tried to bang that little girl.. I was personally invested because I have a little girl and thought that was sick and wrong.

    by george newman

lots of interesting thematic stuff regarding victims and victimizers and sometimes their role-reversals. Nearly all of his films focus heavily on these issues. Knife in the Water. The Tenant. Macbeth. Rosemary's Baby. Chinatown. recent things like The Pianist and Oliver Twist.

and the most atrocious is certainly Rush Hour 3. Easily. I'd rather be drugged and forced to fuck an underage girl in the ass rather than watching this again. How's that I got it wrong? My TB sources are reliable!

Celebrity suck-ups who defend a man who drugged and raped a child and fled capture.

Some of you need to get your priorities and values adjusted.

But of course, any one who takes issue with a child rapist is a "hater." Please.

    by euangelion

As a few people have pointed out, this guy isn't just your average sex offender. He can claim a kind of psychological damage that nearly nobody else on Earth can.

Think about it, he was a victim of one of the most unsettling aspects of the 20th century: a racially/ideologically centered program of industrialized murder. After going through that, he managed to pull his shit together and become a promising artist whose only real hangup was having occasional group sex with his hot wife. Then, a group of hippie religious fanatics not only murder his wife but make a display of her corpse that would have been crude even in Nazi occupied Europe. How can you stand up and denounce a person as blameworthy for their actions when they've suffered that kind of psychological damage?

    Well....

    by d o o d

I've seen Polanski's movies, some I liked and some I didn't care much for. I don't really care about that anyway. Point is he did rape an underage girl and fled the country. I believe only recently the girl who he raped is now a woman and she forgave him, which doesn't make him a better person, it just makes her a saint. Hollywood is full of sleazy people who have pretty much done worse than Polanski. He was just one that got found out. Infact people with Fame and Money are the most dangerous as they can pretty much prey on the vulnerable as they always have done and WITHOUT the use of the net. I'm sure Michael Bay is a Paedo, why else would his movies be shite..!

    by dreadpirateroberts

Come on. Sure his life had some horrible chapters, and if you were making the case for him being anti-social or having trouble getting close to women or something I would say you have a valid point. But having this happen does NOT then lead to "its understandable that he drugged and sodomized a 13 year old girl".

    by givemeanfinbreak

Point is, I wasn't there to witness the act and, admitting that, only have the testimony of the girl and her (undoubtedly) money-grubbing mother to go on.

The fact that she was 13 certainly doesn't rub me the wrong way. He's European. That's legal to him. Fuck, look at Jimmy Page.

    Hollywood Strike

    by _maltheus_

You know, these guys got balls to be demanding more money for the crap they've been turning out these past few years while the rest of us make do with less and less, working far more difficult jobs. If I were a studio exec, I'd fire them all, never deal with the "guild" again and start recruiting fresh from all over the country for new talent. You'd get fresh ideas for less money in an industry that can no longer do anything but stale, unimpressive remakes. I don't understand what the problem is. Two birds, one stone.

    by cherryvalance

    "for a fucking reason"

I'm sorry but that made me laugh.

Anyway, it sucks when this strike thing rears it's ugly head because of movies like this one that have to plan so far ahead. I like Polanski's movies and from his interviews he seems like an okay guy. He did go through some horrible stuff in his life and I don't know the specifics of what he did with that girl. But I remember what I did hear didn't bother me that much. It was something like she was a young teenager who was at some party and they both did drugs and he put it in her pooper right? Yes, I think I remember wondering what she was doing at a party like that.

I never said what Polanski did was acceptable or "understandable." Taking advantage of a barely pubescent girl--regardless of the circumstances under which she arrived in that situation--is, in my opinion, wrong. I said he wasn't blameworthy. Normally, we only assign blameworthiness to a person if he/she could have done x rather than y. (Suppose, for instance, that you're a driver who was momentarily distracted and fatally collided with a car full of infants. Is it "all right" or "understandable" that you hit and killed those kids? No. Would we then assign you blameworthiness for that act?)If you happened to have survived one of the worst campaigns of genocide in human history AND your wife was brutally murdered a little over two decades later, it seems to me that you might be a little too messed up in the head to recognize right from wrong in all situations.

    Get a Clue

    by kitty cat

If you new your heads from hour asses you'd appreciate Polanski for his work and not his private life. Do you appreciate his work? Whether you like it or not, was it expertly made? Did he tell a story in his work? What that fuck does it matter to you whether he fled the country over 30 years ago? If you don't like his films then go to another site and complain about Britney Spears giving head and abusing drugs. At least Polanski has contributed to the film industry. More so than most other filmmakers if not all of them.
You're all armchair directors without a frickin' clue as to what matters most in film and storytelling.
Good luck to all of you!
