The Weinsteins stumble around looking for brains with George Romero!!!

Published at:  Sep 11, 2007 11:21:26 PM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I'm really interested in seeing Romero talk at the Alamo in 9 days time when he opens Fantastic Fest with DIARY OF THE DEAD. I've nearly missed him a couple of times in the last few years, having been out of town for his last big Alamo event and there was an interview in Pittsburgh that fell through as I was in town.

So, I'll finally get to see the man in the flesh... maybe I'll get him to sign my original DAWN OF THE DEAD one-sheet I have framed in my bedroom... I am a geek. I'm not ashamed!

The good news is that The Weinstein Co. bought US and Mexican distribution rights to Romero's independently financed DEAD flick at Toronto, so hopefully we'll be seeing that hit US (and Mexican) theaters in the near future... if the Weinsteins don't lock it up in their vault. But good on Romero. Maybe this will open the door for more low budget indie work from the man, where he can work only for himself and not for a table of suits. Thoughts?

With the clout of the Weinsteins behind it, this should help out a lot.

Romero is at his best on shoestring

    by spaced_and_confused

I was raised in Monroeville (home of the Dawn Mall) and had a horror obsessed older sister who introduced me to Romero from the point I could open my eyes. Dawn of the Dead is still one of my favorite movies. I thought Land was a bit too much, but it was still Romero and Nicotero getting back to the good stuff, and I think considering this film evolved from Romero's frustration with corperate association, so maybe it was a blessing in disguise. I can't wait, I'll always look forward to Romero coming back to the genre he invented.

The Weinsteins continue their trend of flops

    by jimmy_009

The last Dead movie was total shit. I hope Diary is an improvement, but I'm not holding my breath.

Nice. Now someone do the same for Terry Gilliam...

    by sulla

Can't wait DotD! The more the suits stay outta Romero's way the better the work is going to be, period. If only someone would support Gilliam like this, Tideland was genius.

Their brains are in their huge asses! The Whine Steens are the biggest Fuckers in Hollywood! How many projects have they put their greasy paws on only to shitcan? George deserves better. No one wants to be in business with those bastards. They are the kiss of death. If only Bubba could get his jaws on them he could munch for years.

    by gearfree

They can't split it apart like grindhouse. I figure they'll get a company like maple to force it out(in Canada) the door shortly before the saw 4 dvd gets released. I've heard nothing but praise from the people who saw this, they say it easily makes up for land.

Don't get screwy with your scissors on George's vision. He was making awesome flicks before you were begging your mom for gum money.

Seriously. The movie was laughably bad. Hopefully this isn't nearly as stupid as that movie was.

This sucks. It'll be about 6 months before other countries get this movie because the Weinsteins are releasing.

    Low budget=Low gore

    by darth sicilian

I think this film, while probably very good, will come and go at the box office. In this day and age horror fans expect a high gore quotient in zombie films. Plus Land of the Dead was truly disappointing..so people might look at this film and say "I'll wait for the DVD". That being said the Weinsteins probably will make a nice profit from Dairy just because of the built in ticket/DVD sales associated with anything associated with Romero.

The one thing the Weinsteins should think about is the release date. They can't sit on it forever. If the movie version of World War Z is 1/3 as good as the book, and it's released before Diary, then this film will really crash and burn.

Land of the Dead was fine. I dug it a lot.

    by harryblackpotter

Honest. It wasn't in the same league as Dawn or even Day, but it was good to see George back behind the camera. And it had Asia Argento in it who was hot goddamnit!

New Romero story every fucking day?

    by cruel_kingdom

Come on. What is this, Ain't It Romero News? Romero is a hack. His last semi-relevant film was DAY OF THE DEAD and it sucks in comparison to DAWN and NIGHT...

    Not really good news.....

    by elgyn6655321

Are we all forgetting that the Weinsteins are notorious for chopping-up movies in the editing room? And they also send lots of stuff straight to video? This doesn`t even definetly mean it`s going to theaters.

Read the deal, it has a guarantee of a theatrical release. Nothing about the editing though. Any idea of a possible Europe release co.?

    A copy of a copy?

    by series7

Was it me or did anyone else feel like Land of the Dead was an attempt to show up the much better Dawn of the Dead remake? And possible if Land had come out first it would not have felt like a bad version of the Dawn remake? Like they even had similar scenes? It felt like well George you got beat by the new guy. Hopefully this Diary is something better, I mean the concept at least is something orginal... unless it comes out after that new J.J. Abramas movie (Cloverfield, 1-8-08, whatever) because that movie seems like it may have a similar concept? And if that is so I agree with RodHolt. Romero should have tried harder to get work in the 90's. His old stuff is the best, and he just lessens it by making bad sequels. I am hopeful that this is better but? Its hard to seperate Romero fans who love anything he does from people who will say what is good and bad.

It was scary as hell at the start and evne though it wasn't flawless (baby zombies?) it was decent. I hope he does better with the new one cause Land sucked ass.

    Retire? WTF???

    by riker33

What IS it with all these people demanding that George retire??? Is your sad life THAT affected by a man making a movie, most likely hundreds of miles away from you, that you are NOT required to see??? If it bothers you that much, seek some professional help. There are a lot of movies out there that I have no intention of seeing, but it's no skin off my nose if people want to make them.

    6 Months?

    by tourist

Actually, if The Weinsteins and Horror movies are anything to go buy, we will probally NEVER get this in other countries. And since the DVD will probally come in ten 30 dollar segments with a mirror flipped image that you have to fold in, unless you wait for the 84th deluxe edition ten years down the track, it will probally be bootleg city again, like Grindhouse, or the uncensored Kill Bill.

Hey K, while there was little character development(which is a fucking shame, Polley, Rhames and Weber are damn fine actors), the pacing(fast zombies helped this), editing, music and action really worked for me. I LOVED Michael Kelly as CJ and the movie had a very good sense of humor.
IMO, the zombie baby subplot should have been dropped for more character development. Plus, this was definitely one of those movies that I didnt expect shit from and it kind of knocked my socks off when I first saw it. It's definitely lodged firmly in third place on my Zombie Apocalypse shelf of DVDs.
