Next up in the horror remake arena... THE STEPFATHER!

Published at:  Sep 11, 2007 4:42:12 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I happen to really dig the cheesy '80s slasher STEPFATHER films, mostly for the charisma and pure creepy factor from pre-Locke Terry O'Quinn. In fact, I saw the original STEPFATHER film again recently at the Alamo Drafthouse Downtown, before they shut their doors, and the movie holds up surprisingly well. Although, I forgot about the gratuitous cock-shot at the beginning... Sorry, Terry, but I didn't need to see that side of you.

The only thing I really remember about the sequel is that Jonathan Brandis was in it, that crazy chick with the weird eyes (Meg Foster from THEY LIVE and MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE) was in it and that even as a young kid I didn't buy that the Stepfather survived the end of the first movie.

So, the news is that the flick is about to be remade at Screengems. Nelson McCormick is going to helm from a Joe Cardone script. McCormick just wrapped on another horror remake, PROM NIGHT. The proof will be in the pudding when that comes out. PROM NIGHT was never my favorite of the period.

From the sounds of things, it looks like this will be more of a remake of Part 2, about a boy who thinks his adoptive father might be a serial killer.

I don't know. I think stuff like STEPFATHER is more suited for a remake than iconic classics, but it's all in who they get to play the Stepfather and how realistic they keep it. O'Quinn was fantastic... creepy, scary... but there was something really real about him that made it creepy. I hope whomever they get has those same qualities and they don't HITCHER this movie up. Thoughts?

    by boondock devil

Terry O'Quinn was pretty damn terrific in it. Plus a Jill Schoelen shower scene.

I guess I can live with a remake. It'd be especially cool if they William H. Macy for the role. Or here's a unique twist.. why not sign O'Quinn back up for the role?

    by mullah omar

Seriously, why not just ask Terry O'Quinn to do another one? He's not that old, he's one of those guys who has looked pretty much the same for decades, and he's as good an actor as they're going to get for something like this. Maybe make this one "The Stepgrandfather." I can't remember if he's supposed to have died in the second film, but who cares?

    by jackpumpkinhead

It's really "Stepfather IV", only better than the second sequel (it's also better than the first sequel, but what isn't?). And the only way to find it now is on Direct Connect. Or maybe a 15-year old ex-rental VHS tape.

    by bouncy x

since he's become "cool" and "popular" now cuz of Lost maybe they'll get him to reprise the role....that could be interesting. of course this is hollywood and so the odds of that are pretty damn high and it'll probably end up being some hunk of the moment or someone older who isnt that well known if at all.

    Yeah I remember Stepfather 3.

    by thenorthlander

What happened in that one was that he had done extensive face surgery so he looked like a completely different actor. The first thing he did was *SPOILER WARNING* kill the surgeon. Then he found himself a new family that he could kill (of course, he had to marry into it first). It ended with him being ground to milkshake. I think the first one IS a classic, and it was really good for a long time, but it's dated now so maybe an update could be fun if it was made as a realistic thriller.

Joseph Ruben did such a fine job, Terry O'Quinn nailed that role, so of course they'll fuck it up. Why do these directors take these properties, that they claim they love, like the director of The Hitcher claimed, and decide they need to put their fingerprints all over it. It you love it, let it go.

the second one still sucked though. The first one is hilarious. I hope they keep the side story of the guy trying to find the Stepfather. When he finally tracks him down, he busts into the house, and Terry O'Quinn stabs him and kills him and he accomplishes nothing. Thats some funny shit. I also like when he smashes the shrink with the 2x4.

...raping my childhood. My father (who passed in '99)and I saw that movie together and were both very impressed with Terry's acting in it. After that movie I always looked for movies he was in. I have fond memories of cleaning our basement with my Dad and him acting like Terry yelling "WHAT WE NEED IS SOME ORDER AROUND HERE!" and I would just bust up. The Stepfather was an unmatched classic.

Popping in with my standard O`Quinn remark...

    by frank black

I would only consent to this remake if Terry O`Quinn were cast and anyone who is posting here who hasn't seen Terry O`Quinn's chilling and steely work in the show Millennium needs to buy those boxed sets now! This show was what Medium, CSI, and every other half-baked police procedural with a supernatural twist wants to be. Millennium stomped X-Files to the ground in terms of quality and writing and was the most under appreciated show ever!

I also don't think The Stepfather will see a DVD release because I believe the actress in the aforementioned shower scene was underage (but I could be wrong on that.)

BUT, they should simply re-cast Terry O'Quinn. Why not? he's a name again.

re-cast him. get a better actress than Jill "Here are my tits" Schoelen (not too difficult) to be the daughter, retain the same film structure, and get a proper score, none of that synthetic crap that marrs the 80's film.

the original is great though. remember the first time you watched it? the tracking shot down the stairs, paintings tilted, little bit of blood, then pulling back to reveal a massacre? BRILLIANT

    by thegreatwhatzit

Talk about desperation. What's the point of remaking a lousy movie like PROM NIGHT? STEPFATHER was infinitely better but not particularly memorable (more like a made-for-TV flick). Months ago, someone pitched a FIEND WIHOUT A FACE remake. I'm not fond of any remakes (evinced by the likes of Zombie's latest stinker, HALLOWEEN) but FIEND would be the least offensive choice. In fact, FIEND and THE FOUR SKULLS OF JONATHAN DRAKE were considered rather provocative in the 1950s (the precursors of ultra-gore).

    by vern

On one hand, at least they're honest. It is an idea they could easily get away with just ripping off. And it's not like the name THE STEPFATHER is gonna bring in the teens. It is a good story worth re-interpreting if they had a really smart, creepy director (like if David Fincher had wanted to do it early in his career) and of course if they got the right actor. It would be hard to beat Terry O'Quinn. That scene where the girl goes to the cellar to get ice cream and sees him flipping out, and then he tries to explain it... fucking amazing. And also the scene where he forgets which identity he is supposed to be using.
On the other hand, this doesn't sound like they have a director like that, and who knows if they'll find an actor like that, and God help them if they plan to make it into a bigger, more commercial movie like the other horror remakes. Plus, who's gonna write it better than Donald Westlake? And will this guy find a way to tie it in with modern values or is it just gonna be a Reagan era rehash? Also will it still take place in Seattle or will it be Enumclaw?

"sorry occupational habit..the wife gets on me for that all the time" "thought you said you were bachelor ray" The stepfather is so fucking awesome it ranks in my alltime favorite movie list ..probably in the top 20 of all time. stepfather 2 is also great but on a different lvel.....they both have so many great moments in both of them.the first one is a truly great thriller. one of the best of its kind for the time and for all time. I love it.the second one is great in a completely silly way "should have bought american" pure cheese but o'quinn takes it to a place that in lesser hands it would never have landed. god how I love both of those films....
