FATHER GEEK announces the summers swimming pool film fests.
Attention all Austin area geeks!!! You know those wonderful film splash parties that
you’ve read about on AICN’s pages over summer’s past, weeeell the Austin Parks and
Recreation Dept. has revived the series for this summer. The Deep Eddy Swimming Pool
at 401 Deep Eddy Drive will host the series this year every Saturday night from May 29th
till August 28th. Take it from FATHER GEEK these events can be gigantic fun. Click
over to the Aint It Cool Museum and read what I have to say about the Creature from the
Black Lagoon 3-D screening back in Aug. of 1996 in my article on Greatest Film
Memories. The pool will be reopening at 8 pm each Saturday, there will be refreshments
(in past years they have even had hot dogs), and you’ll have to pay the normal pool entry
fee. Now, this is not an event for Film Snobs, it is riotious jollity, rollicking divertissement,
and just plain frisky fun. How better to spend a hot summer’s eve? If I were you I’d pick
films I’d seen before that captured my inter-child and revisit them in this new format. If
you attend one of these presentations Father Geek predicts you’ll easily become 12 again,
maybe even 6. I know all of us did.
Picture this scene geeks and geekettes; you’re floating in the cool clear Texas Hill
Country spring water, the stars are twinkling above your upturned eyes in the black velvet
sky, the Moon is busy playing at being a Cheshire Cat, you spot Venus first then Orion’s
belt and one of the dippers, the surrounding centuries old Live Oak trees are bathed in an
eerie flickering reflected light, their silver-green-grey Spanish Moss gently swaying before
the breath of a warm humid breeze, and then... quite suddenly... accompanied by a chorus
of hundreds of ear piercing screams... Mighty Joe Young leaps with a thunderous roar out
of the night’s blackness straight at you sending the once still waters into a raging torrant
of disruptive waves. Just toooo toooooo cooooooool!!!

Father Geek doesn’t know about you, but our Geek Headquarters crew plans on
making several of these. Come early. The lines will grow longer and longer as the Summer
stretches on, and the word spreads. 3-D night will have a huge turnout. You can bring
small floation devices, some humbugs even bring lawn chairs, missing the whole point.
The best seats are in the water where the action is. Not on some distant shore populated
by grownups in full clothes. Did I tell your to come early? This will be a line of a different
color for sure. The last one I was in had Alligators, Sharks, Ducks, Orcas, a Sea Serpent
or two, and lots of Bikinis in it. Remember the line is part of the experience. You may end
up telling your friends more about it than the movie. Did I say come early? Not to beat a
dead seahorse, but this line will be cool, jaunty, frolicsome. If you need more information
call the Austin Aquatics Dept. at 512-480-3030. Mark your calendars boils and ghouls.
I’ve already branded mine, burning 3 of these dates onto my right frontal lobe. Or was that
the left? Oh, well. See you there! We’ll be the ones treading water at approximately 3rd or
4th non-row center. And remember it’s the precocious little chicks that get the helminthes.
