Lords Of Coolness Samuel L. Jackson And Ed Harris -vs- Renny Harlin In CLEANER!! A Trailer's Online!!
Merrick here...
Poor Renny Harlin always gets a bad rap. And, for the most part, he's done little to earn his way out of it.
Unlike many, I didn't hate DIE HARD 2, although I thought it lacked the class of the first film and the punch of the third.
CUTTHROAT ISLAND's only memorable element to me was its use of ARMY OF DARKNESS music in its trailers.
I disliked THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT rather intensely. But, I find all Shane Black scripted stuff abrasive, self-absorbed, and smarmy...so why should it be different?
CLIFFHANGER...the film that actually managed to make John Lithgow unwatchable. I remember seeing this movie...sitting there listening to Trevor Jones struggling to ape his far superior LAST OF THE MOHICANS score...and feeling the whole affair was really quite tragic.
Then there's DEEP BLUE SEA, which had not much good in it...but did bring us one of the coolest character annihilations in recent cinema for my money (I guess it wasn't all that recent, though). I'm referring to Sam Jackson getting gobbled up by the mega shark while in the middle of his goofy, inspirational speech.
And, of course, we can't forget DRIVEN. One of the funniest movies ever made in my book. Ed Wood with a budget. It's a smiley kind of hell.
So, how will Renny fare this time around? CLEANER is about a crime scene clean-up guy who gets involved in some crazy stuff regarding one of the crime scenes he's cleansed. Crime scene cleanup always struck me as one of the most fucked up jobs a person could have. I mean...I dunno. Geeze.

With 13 producers credited at IMDB, nothing can go wrong...right? (ahem)

Return of Sam jackson
-
Long Kiss Goodnight & Deep Blue Sea both pretty much rule, in my book. I'd say the same for pretty much any Shane Black scripted movies (in a, you know, fun movie to watch sort of way), for that matter.
-
Every other Harlin movie = GARBAGE
-
at you don't like Shane black
-
damnitt lost
-
Had you not told me this was a Renny Harlin movie, I would never have known. Which is to say, not bad! Nice cast and the trailer makes it seem like we'll be in for some good performances. And I LOVE the idea of watching a crime scene cleaner - disgusting and fascinating.
Still... it is Renny Harlin. So, i might just have to wait for DVD.
-
He's MY kind of bad director. There are shit loads hacks out there, at least Harlin's shit is fun.And Merrick. I'm going to need you to take back what you just implied re. Lethal Weapon. It may be no Die Hard, but show some respect...
-
For Ed Wood badness. Wasn't Harlin pretty much the Michael Bay of the 80's. A hack given bigger and bigger budget. Only Harline imploded (or exploded) with CUTTHROAT ISLAND, a nice warning to Bay that the Ides of March beckon. Anyway, I remember he was pretty much an arrogant prick around when he married Geena Davis and burned a lot of bridges. I guess relatively low budget movies are now his punishment.
-
Wait a second, didn't he do that Exorcist prequel as well? Don't think I saw it up there.
-
Much more intense and cool than Part III and IV.
Cliffhanger and Long Kiss Goodnight were also good actioners. Prison and Nightmare IV are decent horror movies. The rest of Harlins Movies suck big time. -
...honestly he is looking fatter and fatter in each film.
-
Fincheresque
-
Maybe Renny Harlin actually made a good movie.......
-
What is Ed Harris doing in a Renny Harlin film? Must be a slow year for him. Jeez.
-
You need to see more action movies. Die Hard 2 is a lame retread of the original.
-
This lame and lousy movie. By far the worst DIE Hard. Horrible. Merrick is nuts.
-
Renny Harlin should be ashamed that he even made that piece of ever loving shit. Fucking get this man out of Hollywood and into a clinic for "people who think they're talented". If something like that existed, you would have about ten-thousand amatuer filmmakers enlisted within the hour.
-
Having Sam Jackson shout in your movie trailer was a good move after Pulp Fiction, but that was over 10 years ago... Oh, and I laughed at 'What if you come home shot?' Big Sam don't need no hospital - he just goes straight home lol
-
The Long Kiss Goodnight is easily one of the coolest and finest actioners ever made (make sure you watch that in widescreen),and so is Cliffhanger. Deep Blue Sea is just big B- Movie Monster Bliss, I love watching the amazing Walt Conti animatronics sharks go after the cast and how could a person not love watching Saffron Burrows in her wet underwear. And yeah, the Sam Jackson's scene is probably my favourite death scene ever so please show a bit of respect to Mr. Harlin's work Merrick. Don't like Shane Black's writing ? Man. The Lethal Weapon series. The Long Kiss Goodnight. The Monster Squad.
I agree Harlin made some truly awful films as well, although I still have to see Mindhunters. Anybody with an opinion on that ?
The trailer for The Cleaner looks great,I went to the IMDB, Robert Forster is in the movie as well.
Really looking forward to it, thanks for bringing it up.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
There's the "Sam jackson death scene." -
And I have to confess a certain fondness for Cutthroat Island's amibitious set-pieces. Everything since Deep Blue Sea has been poor to downright shite.
-
And whilst I cant remember a damn thing about LKG, Shane Black is the fucking man! I think I'm the only person on the planet to mildly enjoy Driven, well mainly the sound mix which was awesome. Yeah and DH2 is enjoyable enough, better than DH4.
-
Then again I'm a bit optimistic when it comes to trailers. I always thought someone should make a movie about crime scene cleaners. Besides 'Curdled' that is.
-
It's just brilliant as an action flick. Not classic, but fucking great all the same. Harlin might not be a master of action, but Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, The Long Kiss Goodnight and Deep Blue Sea are all highly watchable silly films that don't make you think too much and nothing really 'bad' sticks out in them.
-
It’s funny because I find all of Merrick’s stuff to be abrasive, self-absorbed, and smarmy.
-
One of the best 90s action movies. And he prolly hates KISS KISS BANG BANG as well cause of Black.
This CLEANER movie looked gritty, dinghy, something that Andrew Davis (Code of Silence, Fugitive) would have shot. Doesnt look like a Harlin picture - but the names in the ledger corrupt cops thingie is old hat and cliched - as soon as I saw that I knew the film would be shiite. I can also see Ed Harris a mile away as a twist villain.
-
about a crime scene cleaner. It was more dark comedy and less thriller and also from what I read (it was unfinished) far more interesting than this crap.
-
Was a decent flick. This actually could be decent. I'll reserve judgement until after having seen it. Something I'm trying to do nowadays instead of getting worked up about some movie I haven't even seen yet.
-
What a pile of crap. Die Hard 2 was genius compared to 3.
-
And Deep Blues Sea was a lot of fun as well. At least a director who knows how to film action scenes without making the viewer fell like suffering from an epileptic seizure *wink to Mr. Bay*!
-
escape, and death by icicle impailment to the eye. And the improbable return of William Atherton. All reasons to at least enjoy Die Hard 2 on a dumb action movie level. Cliffhanger (Die Hard on a mountain? Whatever..) and Deep Blue Sea, both goofy fun. And you gotta admit, the first ten minutes of Cliffhanger, has got to be the best direction Harlin has committed to film.
-
...all kick the absolute piss out of the watered down, pussified so called action films of today, but then I think we pretty much know by now that Merrick's tastes are even worse than Herc's, so no big surprise to see him ragging on this stuff.
-
The Last Boy Scout, Lethal Weapon, and The Long Kiss Goodnight whoops the shit out of any action flick of recent memory including that overrated Bourne series.
-
Harlin's best. What a cool movie. Underrated and so funny. Oooooooooooooooooow.
-
Jesus wept! You sure you got enough of 'em Mr. Studio? LoL!
-
I make sure I watch it, the original BLACK CHRISTMAS & A CHRISTMAS STORY each & every year. They're a tradition in our home!
As for CLEANER, I don't know, it looks pretty watchable to me. I'm far from a fan of all of Harlin's stuff, but I thoroughly enjoy some of it. I mean, it's not like he's a TOTAL hack like, say, Jan DuBont or something. Even his worst stuff I can sit through at least once. -
of the last 20 years:
1.DIE HARD
2.ALIENS
3.LETHAL WEAPON
4.ROAD WARRIOR
5.HARD BOILED
6.MATRIX
7.TRUE LIES
8.TERMINATOR 1 & 2
9.ROBOCOP
10.KILL BILL
11.RUNAWAY TRAIN
12.PREDATOR
13.the FUGITIVE
14.LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD (yeah, i funkin' liked it)
15.and those 4 Renny Harlin fics that everyone mentions are all tied. -
A lot of love and admiration for the classic Harlin actioners here; cool. Any fans here of the Geena Davis Long Kiss "waterwheel" scene ?
-
Seriously, the man is a guilty pleasure machine. MINDHUNTERS doesn't get talked about enough. Pretty decent take on "10 Little Indians".
CLEANER seems to be stripped of the ludicrousness of...most of his resume. Maybe it'll work for him. -
its the only thing that makes sense
-
thats why some dont buy her as an actress
-
COMEDY and Action done right.
-
And Deep Blue Sea, while far from genius, at least boasts a startling body count of seemingly lead characters which you could never expect when first seeing it.
Other than that I can take or leave Renny. I enjoyed parts of Mindhunters but it was so fucking silly. Loved the scene where Val Kilmer is apparently just fucking talking to himself, making shit up that has nothing to do with the scene...."do it you spoiled child." -
I have disagreed with the opinions of Harry as often as I have agreed with them. I typically find Moriarty to be spot on in his (pop) cultural assesments. I often find Massawrym(???) to be a little more crass than what is usually called for (but I'm pretty sure that that is his schtick). I confuse Hercules & Quint's ramblings (every time) until I see their avatars.
But one thing they all have in common (at least) is the ocassional ability to engage the sphere of my brain that controls critical thinking. Whether it's to laugh, or to agree, or to spew obscene remarks at my monitor, these guys have all managed to entertain me (or just distract me from my mundane existence) at one point or another. This Merrick mother#u(%@r? Not even once. I remember being wholly unimpressed from his first posts on this site, but all the while thinking that I should give a brother a chance to get his legs underneath him. Well it's been long enough now, and I have to say that it's time to let this dead branch fall from the tree. Nothing personal Merrick, but you just don't seem to have the writing mojo required for this line of work (entertaining me and mine). So who am I to spout such a judgemental statement? Nobody special. But that's a good point, seeing as how this "nobody special" finds your writing style less entertaining than half of the talkbackers on the site. Harry, this guy was obviously hired to help contribute to the overall stability of the site, and I get that he probably had some type of credentials that gave you the assumption that he would be a great fit for your company. But I (and many others that I've talked to) are just not feelin the love for this character (or lack thereof). Do us a favor, and find him a clerical position. Am I alone on this people? -
Which is more than I can say for many of the films recommended by the studio whores and plants who often write for this site. I have enjoyed most of the Renny Harlin films I have seen and even the ones I haven't are made watchable by his incredible audio commentaries. "The Long Kiss Goodnight", "Deep Blue Sea", "Prison", "Cliffhanger" and "Cutthroat Island" (yes, even "Cutthroat Island") all find themselves on regular rotation at my house as they are highly watchable films. "The Adventures Of Ford Fairlane Rock & Roll Detective" is a seriously guilty pleasure and is a great party film. Even "Die Hard 2" has its moments. And for sheer volume of information about the project and how many bad turns a film can take even after it's been completed I can't go past the dual commentary tracks of both Schrader and Harlin's versions of the "Exorcist" prequel films. Each could have been watchable films if they'd each been allowed to be by the money men. I haven't seen "Mindhunters" but I intend to and I haven't seen "Driven" though I may not as I don't like racing films. "The Cleaner" looks by the numbers to be sure but it also looks a heck of a lot better than the dreck this site usually pimps, so I'll see it when it comes out. Oh and Shane Black OWNS your arse, owns it.
-
and let you badmouth Long Kiss Goodnight and Deep Blue Sea!! . . . Yes I will.
-
Deceitful Bitches!!!
-
If you can fuck this movie up - you deserve a special award....an Oscar rammed straight up your ass...better be good.
-
yes!
-
Speaking of being easily satisfied with shit and having incredibly poor judgment. I can't wait for another audio commentary on the layers of The Devil's Rejects.
-
Plus he banged Charlie Baltimore. And directed Chuck Norris's son in ARCTIC HEAT (at least that was what it was called in the UK - BORN AMERICAN in the States?). PRISON was fun. ELM ST IV? That was his, too, wasn't it? He's like the action movie Barry Bonds or something. He could have made all of some folks top ten flicks and they'd still curse the ground he walks on. Ah well. I like DEEP BLUE SEA, cos of a) Jackson b) Thomas Jane showing early promise c) nerdy JAWS in-jokes and d) Saffron Burrows being bitchy in a wetsuit. CLIFFHANGER these days looks awful - stagey as hell, though the midair plane to plane transfer is still cool. DH2? Meh. KISS GOODNIGHT is fine until the ending, when it's clear that everyone has run out of ideas. CUTTHROAT ISLAND, DRIVEN, COVENANT, and his version of EXORCIST: THE BEGINNING are all fairly shonky, tho MINDHUNTERS was at least better than D-TOX. CLEANER at least has a decent cast and a reasonable premise, though like someone said above, Ed Harris is gonna either the bad guy, or a figment of Jackson's imagination or something. Harlin? He gets a C average. Could do better.
-
Didn't QT produce a film like this starring Angela Jones as a hot babe crime scene cleaner? I think it was a black comic version of this premise.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115994/ -
Deep Blue Sea & The Long Kiss Goodnight are also fun to watch.Don't like Shane Black? Stupid. Just stupid.
-
and I don't mean ya legs!
Oh man, I was just about to take a great big shit all over Renny Harlin when somebody mentioned Ford Fairlane - now THAT was one cool movie!
I liked Long Kiss Goodnight although I wouldn't rate it as a favourite exactly, but that's about as far as I'm prepared to go as far as the rest of those films are concerned... The scary part is just how many of them I've seen! -
And John Lithgow was too. So you are wrong. That is all!
-
Heavy flow indeed.
-
The ONLY thing that detracted was Lithgow, that I have to agree with. But Stallone was fantastic in it - he gave a better acting performance in it than he did in Copland. And Michael Rooker and Janine Turner were great too, really made it a good ensemble movie. Also, Cliffhanger was analagous to Israel and Palestine, with Lithgow = Zionists and Janine Turner = Yasir Arafat.
-
They let this bastard make films and yet we can't get another Road Warrior.
I'm off subject but who cares. I'd kill for another Mad Max or a James Cameron remake of anything. Escape from New York maybe.
An NC17 ROAD WARRIOR for adults only. No superheroes just human dirtbags vs dirtbags.
Oh where have thou gone great badassness of Hollywood. -
...then I can't trust your opinion.
-
All good, all vastly underrated.
-
Shane Black: Long Kiss Goodnight, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Lethal Weapon, The Monster Squad. Renny Harlin: Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, FORD FUCKING FAIRLANE!!!!!, Deep Blue Sea, Long Kiss Goodnight. These are action lover MOVIES! How can you not like these guys? I realize that Renny has REALLY fallen on hard times with his shitty movies lately...but give the man some credit for some 80's- early 90s "b" movie goodness.
-
DK why people mess with him. Cliff, DH2, LKG, all wikd action films. People are just very harsh on Action Directors. The only dude that stands up to the treatment is Cameron. No one else seems to survive.
