Rick Baker was killed by Benicio Del Toro on Mark Romanek's THE WOLFMAN & We've The Pic To Prove It!!!
Hey folks, Harry here... It recently leaked out on to the net that Rick Baker was indeed providing the make-up for Benicio in Mark Romanek's THE WOLFMAN - from Andrew Kevin Walker's script. I've known this for quite some time now - about 3 months ago, Romanek video i-chatted with me for a bit and waved this photo in front of his iSight camera for about 3 seconds as I tried to make out what it was - before being greeted with Mark's smiling face. To say he's excited about working with these two is a gross understatement. He literally has been geeking out about it. So when the word hit the web, I contacted Mark to share this great, celebratory pic with all of you. Now as you look at this - realize... NO MAKE-UP HAS BEEN APPLIED - That's just Benicio doing his WOLFMAN snarl - pre-Rick Baker. Can you imagine POST-Rick Baker Benicio? I can't wait to see this film - I expect nothing short of greatness. And a pimp cane!

This was taken about three months ago -- Our first meeting with the three of us. This pose was a jokey homage to the classic Universal Wolfman/Famous Monsters Magazine-era style, but seeing Benicio getting "wolfy" for the first time, even in jest, gave us chills. It was our first glimpse of what we could expect from this amazingly original and gifted actor. It was very exciting to see these guys in the same room. Rick could tell immediately that Benicio was a sincere fan of the Lon Chaney Jr. original. Rick is such a Wolfman fan, he admitted that he's only campaigned for two films in his entire career. One was "Ed Wood" and the other is this project. Seeing them together in the same room made me feel the project was finally becoming a reality. Rick's assistant Kazu took extensive hi-rez digital photos (on this incredible 30 megapixel Hasselblad digital camera) of Benny making various facial expressions. we were all so stunned to see just how expressive Benicio's snarls and grimaces were, even without make-up. Rick joked, "so, whattaya need ME for?!" That said, the designs that Rick has created for Benicio are astonishing -- subtle, detailed, (sexy), terrifying. best, Mark

But I'm alright NOOWWWWWWWW. Well it's better than typing first.
-
First with a silver bullet. Now, this is a film that is going to deliver. R-rated horror at its best. Classy.

Well, I'm not sure how much acting is actually involved
by team america
...considering that's the same face he gave Scarlett Johansson when they were riding the same elevator.
-
that picture tells me they do not
-
I hope this isn't some self-pitying emo origin story. I'd much rather see someone with superpowers . . . ENJOY using those superpowers. I guess that depends on whether this iteration of the wolfman has any control when he wolfs out, but still, I hope this isn't yet another gloomy "poor me" superpower flick.
-
Scared me for a second! phewwww...
-
I love werewolf films. I think we need some more good ones. The last one I remember really liking was WOLF with Jack Nickolson, except for the ending, when it degenerated into a standard "good guy vs. bad guy" showdown. Up until that part, it was pretty interesting and eerie.
-
but now its back on my radar and coming in fast. Secret screening at Fantastic Fest 08'? Please!
-
Gotta say I'm looking forward to this as there has been a shocking lack of decent Werewolf flicks out there (and no Underworld doesn't really count - as fun as it was)
-
Moisturizer.
-
Well, not really, but Rick Baker doing another werewolf picture? I'm there.
-
Fantastic photo.
-
Last I heard, November 14th, 2008 is the release date. It'll be mighty close to Bond 22.
-
And...uh...this wouldn't be considered "cool news"?
-
...still, I'll be interested to see how this one turns out.
-
As that's how he does the visuals for his designs now (now being the last decade or more). <p> On the other hand it'd be cool to keep it secret 'til the release date. If it spills earlier I know I'll cave though. <p> I wonder if the face will be oldschool or a combination with the best of practical and digital? Can't wait, such a big fan!

Both those dudes are so unbelievably cool. Some girl I know went to a party at Benicio's house, and he was passed out drunk in his bedroom. She walked up to him, and he lurched out of unconsciousness and told her to, and I quote, "Pull out her ass". She didn't know what to do, and he fell back on the bed and told her to get out of his house. This girl is a good friend of mine that I am 99 percent sure wouldn't lie about shit like that, but in any case, that story makes him about eighty billion times cooler to me, when he was already so fucking cool to begin with. Oh yea, and this Wolfman movie will be awesome and amazing. I heart Rick Baker.
-
Any other spoilers you want to post first?
-
Mother Cunting funning dude. Oh and cannot wait for this sweeeet bit of fanboy cinema. Just hope it doesn't turn into a Jack Nicholson size shitefest ala Wolf.
-
For the check to clear?

Grow up, Harry

...the Thriller video; Baker did the wolf make-up for all those films, so he's the obvious and perfect choice.
-
Now that's how you make a hit movie (and you've got to use James Brown on the trailer: "I feel good...").

I wonder if Del Toro or Chaney had the same problem...

This looks like Saddam Hussein has risen from the grave to exact revenge upon the American infidels.

I defy anyone to come up with a negative thing to say about this project! We're already looking at GOLD.
-
Baker got a consultant credit though; never knew that. I always prefered the Howling werewolves, what with the bony knuckles and the long pointy claws and all. Bet they'll be doing a snoutless werewolf here like the original. Anything but Underground's round-headed puma-wolves... what a let down that was.
-
Del Toro is crazier than a rat in shit.
-
Did you see the original? The character was all about self pity, especially leading up to the first transformation scene. This is one property where that stuff actually kinda belongs.<P>Now, if he's a detective or drives an ambulance, then I'm with you.
-
"take that, you kyke!"
-
kinda looks like it. got it bub?
-
than jackman
-
I thought this was supposed to be Victorian England.
-
I'm interested to see whether Andrew Kevin Walker's script can better American Warewolf in London which, despite the years, is still the best warewolf film to date. Also, what about a *spoiler* alert with the picture of Benicio killing Sunderland?
-
It's YakBacker not YackBacker.
-
And will Soderbergh's CHE epics ever actually be finished?
-
Hugh Jackman is that you??? Its really the Wolverines movie!!! SNIKT!!!
-
Someone above mentioned that Baker worked on that. Just a correction: It was Rob Bottin. Speaking of whom, where the hell is that guy these days?
-
Would love to see this get the recognition it will undoubtedly deserve come award season. No pressure though. By the way, I respect all of you.
-
...and you can have a dude that transforms into a Were-Anything, a flaming coat of fur, 720 degree rotating shots, and lotsa 'splosions.
-
Dude is a fucking chameleon.
-
I just don't get you guys. You freak out and almost hemmorige over amazing robos CGI and then gush like little school girls over this . . . this . . . High School Musical try out photo op. And you guys trashed Flash Gordon?

I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vics
by Guy Who Got A Headache And Accidentally Saves The World
And his hair was perfect.
-
It seems the stars are aligning with this one. I have very good feelings that this one will not disappoint.
-
You guys do realise that was the movie that caused them to fall out don't you? Go look it up lazy boys! <p> Rod Holt, if you know the story of THAT one, then that's the best in-joke of the thread! Nice art BTW. <p> Andy & Football, you did read the article, right? Or maybe you were joking I guess.
-
so, what's he look like in the werewolf makeup?
-
I remember in some interview on some best of horror movies somewhere, or possible DVD extra or commentary on An American Werewolf in London where John Landis was telling a story about the dream sequence in London and how it was inspired from Le Charme discret de la bourgeoisie. SO what was the inspiration for The Stupids and BBY2k? Money??? Also speaking of Luis Bunel when is there going to be a DALI! bio pic? Fuck Frida and Goya, Dali was fucked up, you know I could see Sacha playing a decent Dali. I know there was that short movie with that guy from Yes, but I could swear I heard something about a Dali movie. Why not let the two Del Toro's make the movie? I could see that.
-
He's the hairy-handed gent who ran amuck in Kent. Lately he's been overheard in Mayfair. ;P
-
Some called it "communism", but it was really his hunger for human flesh!
-
His 3D Zbrush stuff is too die for... I wonder if he used it too show off some rough designs.
-
i want to see that movie.
-
everyone laugh at my "kyke" post.
-
wolf 2: the gibsoning.
-
Now that was a great werewolf movie.
-
cuntmonkeys
-
had monica bellucci naked, and marc dacascos as a kung fu indian.
-
It was sarcasm based on the pic, Numbnuts.
-
has viral ads. abramseseses
-
in stereo astound-o-vision. no one cares.
-
would also have greg grunberg.
-
Everyone knows you can only do practical werewolf effects. The CG one's always ruin the movie.
-
That's what happens when you skimp on the porcelian caps - you wind up with pub photos that show you bearing a beautiful, perfectly aligned and colored row of incisors, framed by sets of molars that look like someone set off a landmine in a potato patch.<p><br> To future actors: Spend the top dollar; get them ALL capped.
-
tsia
-
. . . is a poor man's Michael Landen.
-
I hope it looks as good as the cat-man make-up in Thriller.
-
have thought Baker would still be getting work in 2007 CGI-era cinema?
-
Is anyone who knows about what Baker's been doing since then (not being facetious btw). He's not myopic about cg in the same way he wasn't a purist and neo-luddite when it came to animatronics. Also his eye and good design is why his Z-brush/Modo stuff is already better in terms of modelling than many who have been doing it for years. <p> Why can't anyone see history has only repeated itself where makeup is concerned? The same basic advantages and disadvantages still exist generally speaking. Which is why The Judge is such a cool makeup. It mixes oldschool with new beautifully!
-
Let him gain extra pounds then work out with body builders and given his acting and his impressive look it would be a great King Conan. Maybe better than Swartzy.
-
but this could change things. We can count on the acting and make up, so hopefully the rest of it will be good too.
-
Viva la Chavez!
-
...in SUIT!!!
-
I'm waiting...
-
Hope this works: <p> http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc7/half_vader/mattRB-BDT.jpg <p> Eyes are a bit wonky but I wanted 'em nice & blood-red, and more half&half than wolf or man. Didn't wanna spend too long so didn't worry too much about brushstrokes. <p> This is fun. Too bad not many joined in. Harry! Make a comp! I don't care if there's no prize, I just wanna see what all our super critical TBers can do!
-
Making it seem like a famous person is dead. Grrr
-
Well..he does...at least here.
-
What does it mean, exactly, when one "literally" geeks out?
-
Valid question. "Geeking out" is not really a metaphor. Abuse of Language in the name of cathexis seems to be the raison d'etre for this site, no?
-
Great fucking director. Up there with Fincher as the best music video director of all time
-
He looks like him.
-
Was always picturing him with a unibrow. Now I know why. Really hope this one thrills. Baker knows CGI can't be used all the time. Real creature fx are much frightening to the eye.
