A Very Cool Look At THE MUMMY

Published at:  Apr 08, 1999 2:42:56 PM CDT

Hey everyone, Harry Here. Thanks to Sam and his website we have these really cool shots from THE MUMMY. Sam's page mainly focuses on STAR WARS, but he has some cool as all hell extras from time to time. But maaaaaaaaaaaaaan, this film is looking... kinda cool. I'm dying to see the effects really clear and big on the silver screen. The 'computer generated makeup' could very well be a huge technological leap if it's pulled off... Let's keep our fingers crossed.

    Hmmmm...

    by loki trickster

I'm just wondering, why does everyone have the exact same facial scarring (or whatever you want to call it)...these look like this could be pretty creapy, but it also reminds me of "Army of Darkness" (not that AoD was a bad movie, but that's not the tone that the Mummy is trying to get across...but...less than a month until this comes out...I'm looking forward to it. -Loki

    not convinced

    by l'auteur

I dunno, im skeptical. Ive got a really bad feeling that this is just gonna be one of those get-a-load-of-these-FX movies. The trailer didnt even try to show us anything other than the FX so that makes me think that thats all its got. At least the Matrix trailer was kind of witty about their FX--"The only way to understand it is to see it"--brilliant tagline. That was a tease almost as good as the Godzilla trailers. Anyway, the Mummy looks OK. Ill see it anyway, but i havent decided whether or not ill pay for it. Brandon Fraiser? I dunno bout him either...he seems so Keanu-ish dumb. Maybe thats what producers of big-FX movies want...The Matrix had Keanu, The Mummy has Brandan... Wouldnt it be great if EPISODE I was the only big FX movie this summer that didnt bomb? That would prove to the dumbass suits that it takes more than CGI to wow an audience. Im honestly starting to think that WILD WILD WEST and THE MUMMY are gonna be lame. Who knows though?

Shit on me... And Frasier is good!

    by oscar mayer

Those effects look like they're going to kick my ass. As for Frasier, he's always been a good actor, just dumb roles. After GODS AND MONSTERS, however, he's kinda back to being legit.
2 legit to quit, yeah yeah.

    by essemtee

Yeah, that's pretty gross, yet impressive looking stuff! And of course it's gonna be a "Hey-get-a
    load-of-these-great-FX!" type of movie!

    the mummy, wwwest, etc....

    by robertj

o.k, look...try and understand what's going on out there in the real world. the powers that be, a bunch of beancounting hall monitors, have decided that ''teen'' flicks are, 1.cheap...2. make money.
i'm sorry, but if i have to read about one more ''edgy coming of age, hilarious, shakespeare driven, etc...i'll puke.
dammit, why the hell do you all insist on more than astounding effects? sure, we all want plot, dialogue, acting, depalma one-shots, etc...but if you all boycott fx films because of this obsession with ''jock learns lesson, homely girl is really a fox, other peoples suffering is funny, wow, those kids sure taught those adults a lesson, teen serial killing, hair-gel, dog killing, bad hair, pierced something lousy hip soundtrack cd crap tarentino jr. horseshit, next summer will be full of...well...more of the above.
cut it out, quit going to farraley brother movies, and do your fucking homework. i want to see risen from the dead cheerleaders with slugs crawling out of their eyes blowing up seattle and planets...and i don't care how bright they are in the least.
53 and tired of all the whineing.

    Yo Mummy

    by obnoxious bitch

I saw the trailer for The Mummy and for WWW in front of The Matrix. WWW is going to blow, BIGtime. Dumb, dumb, DUMB!! The Mummy, howev, looks like it'll be tons o' fun. I'm looking forward to it. (BTW: Matrix had some cool effects, but the patent leather and the shades were WAAY overdone. Coolness for it's own sake ceases to be cool. I loved the bad guy! The Wachowski Bros. are the new boys in the 'wood to watch, tho'. They done good. It was a nice eye-candy kinda flick.)

Am I an idiot (shuddap!) or did RobertJ's post make little sense? What exactly are you complaining about? Do you want more dumb teen movies or more dumb FX movies? Im sorry if Im just stupid, but it just kinda confused me. Please state what kind of dumb movies you like and want more of. Also, judging from the business of Hollywood ever since JAWS and STAR WARS, I can tell you that there is no boycotting of big FX movies. If you look at the top ten box office of all time, i would guess that theyre ALL big FX movies. That is why I am confused. Please clarify.

i reread your post and i think i got it now. Youre some old dumb man who like Bruckhiemer movies but you hate teen movies. OK, what the hell are you complaining about?! There are plenty of dumb Bruckhiemeresque movies out there--ENEMY OF STATE, ARMAGEDDON, PAYBACK, etc etc etc... Hollywood makes more dumb action movies than ever and you think that if a movie like Theres Something ABout Mary becomes a hit, action movies will go out of style?! Also, were you being sarcastic when you said you were sick of all the whining because your post was the whiniest i ever read. PS--the big FX movies and the teen movies (im not sure why you put "teen" in quotes...) are both targeted for the same audience---12 to 25 year olds. Im not sure what my point is, but maybe if you boycotted these big FX films, more movies would be made for other age brackets, such as oldtimers like yourself.

    MUMMY Observations

    by moriarty

    Hey, all...

Someone asked why everyone in these photos had the same facial scarring. It's because they're all images of Imhotep, the film's main villain. These photos were all taken from CINEFEX, which did an excellent piece on this film this month. If you can get past the awful MY FAVORITE MARTIAN cover, it's a good issue, and the story on THE MUMMY is fascinating. The script for this film is wicked good fun, and the cast all seems game. Personally, this, PUSHING TIN, and eXisteZ are all that's going to keep me going until the release of EPISODE I. I think you should all give THE MUMMY a chance before you start calling it "only FX driven" or "lame," as I don't think either of those is going to prove to be true.

    "Moriarty" out.

I hate it when my skin dissolves...

    by javacycle

Amazing special-effect shots of the decomposing flesh and the horde of bugs venting out of the priest's mouth. For some reason though, the skittering beetles remind me too much of the skittering spiders from Lost In Space. That doesn't bode well. But hopefully it will be a fun ride. As for Robert J and his insightful message, I do intend to do my homework and wait for the rotting cheerleader corpses which hopefully will arrive shortly. Forget all those films that have nubile female flesh and allusions to King Lear and nubile female flesh. Who wants to see a smooth, well-toned cleavage when there are rotting cheerleader corpses! With bugs crawling out their eyes!

    HORROR OR SLAPSTICK FARCE

    by jimmy

Saw the mummy at a test screening and while the FX werent completely done yet you could get a good feel on how the movie was going to play and let me say this it is JUST PLAIN SILLY,the way the trailers are playing you would think this thing is going to be a action/adventure/horror movie.Well it is not.

There are some cool action in it but most of it is stupid one-liners and almost slapstick type antics.THIS movie will blow!!!!

    Mummy Effects

    by dofat

I saw the preview of the Mummy the other day. And I have to say the eefects in The Mummy were so good that I Actually want to see this film. (even as much as I hate that George of the Jungle guy Brendan Frasier). Superior is the only word I can give to the ones that I saw. And unless George Lucas' ILM saved the best for Star Wars Episode I. The Mummy Is the most Advanced Effects in a Movie in Years. The line between reality and fantasy is being truly being tested here. I hate to have to say it. but I will anyways. Even if the movie is a complete disaster. see it for the effects.
    they are that good.
