Wolfgang Petersen And Whitley Strieber Introduce Us To THE GRAYS!! (Gasp!) It's About Aliens!?!?
Merrick here...
Unknown Country, author Whitley Strieber's website, indicates that Wolfgang Petersen will direct THE GRAYS (based on Strieber's novel) for Sony.
THE GRAYS is about:
Danny and Katelyn Callaghan are a happily married couple oblivious that both took a saucer ride as kids—until a UFO sighting in their Indiana town awakens subliminal memories and excites their genius teenage son, Conner. Meanwhile, in a secret facility in Colorado, Air Force Lt. Lauren Glass learns that the Roswell incident really happened, and that for decades the surviving ETs have been sharing their advanced science with us. In exchange, these "Grays" have sought to rejuvenate their dying species by genetically manipulating human receptacles for their DNA. But some military hard-liners see this as a betrayal of humanity, and they launch a manhunt that brings them to Indiana and the Callaghans' doorstep.
...says Publishers Weekly.
The book is said to draw heavily from Strieber's COMMUNION, which may be the book for which he is best known (although he wrote WOLFEN, which many people forget).
The very mention of Strieber tends to get people riled up in my circles - it'll be interesting to see how a high profile movie like this is received.
Meanwhile, no further word on the fate of Petersen's seemingly in perpetual development adaptation of Orson Scott Card's ENDER'S GAME. Maybe it can stand beside Morgan Freeman's RENDEZVOUS WITH RAMA in the pantheon of hapless projects consigned to dwell for eternity in Development Hell.

FIRST ! FAGGOTS!
-
they should remake that with really shitty CGI wolves....
personally , I fucking hate aliens. They're no good. -
this Hatchet movie?
I hear its the greatest thing since Cabin Fever. -
bush the lizardian. you can clearly see he ain't human.
-
Didn't I see this before... as The X-Files?
-
Isn't the subject matter a bit 1990s?
-
He's an endearing nutjob, that guy.
-
Two films that will be incredibly difficult to adapt for the screen, but that SHOULD be adapted. I think, with RAMA's case - they should meld the first and the second book together (not much happened in the first book, it was a short story). With ENDER, I don't think the difficulty is in the writing (it is possible to translate the novel to the screen in a faithful manner), but more in the casting of the children. Still, it is possible to find children with enough talent to fill the roles if they throw out a large enough net, casting-wise. I wish Warner Bros. would greenlight the film already.

the book, scared the be-jesus out of me but as GCH888 says, it's all a bit old hat now. Real life is more frightening than alien invaders.
-
. . . and AICN has just blown the whole plot too. My interest has been anal probed. Ba-dum-bum-DSSSSH!!!
-
Unless you were trying to type "Fist Faggots? " either way your on the wrong website douche.
-
i dont hear an interesting spin on the genre
-
As Spider points out to a very thinly-veiled Whit Strieber, if these aliens have come thousands of light years at regular intervals to seemingly do nothing other than eccasionally impart cryptic wisdom to you and stick a prong up your ass, either you have the most beautiful asshole in existence, or there is no intelligent life in the universe.
Give me a old-fashioned ray guns and lasers invasion anyday over these creepy little sods and their probes. -
Wonder what's causing this sudden H-wood interest in Strieber...
-
This movie should be fun for Coast to Coast with George Noory. He and his callers still talk about Fire in the Sky and The Mothman Prophecies, for God's sake. It should be good to listen for laughs.
-
good little film. Spooked the hell out of me. What's that director been up to me wonders - off to imdb!
-
"'Oooby 'oooby 'OOOOOOOOOOOO!"
-
that "greys" are probing peoples anus cavities and so on.
-
Bill Cooper said that Whitley Streiber is a C.I.A. agent. Now, supposing that's true, that could explain the Hollywood interest in making these movies with him - maybe some sudden need to spread disinformation through the media.
-
He wrote that too, which, it seems, is an even more forgettable fact than he wrote Wolfen.
-
Why does shit like this get a film and great Sci-Fi books by Gregory Benford, Greg Bear and Stephen Baxter get ignored. Shit, develop Alan Dean Fosters Flinx series for fucks sake. But no..charlatans like Strieber get handjobs from every insane radio fuck out there so they must get their books made into movies. What at bunch of bullshit.
-
... opening credits scored with Bauhaus' Bela Lugosi's Dead. It was cool shit in the 80s, but if we'd known it'd ultimately lead to today's goth/emo infestation, we'd've burned every friggin' copy of the thing!
-
... Today's aliens of note are the nastier Reptilians. Never mind the anal probes... these buggers can shape-shift and they eat people for breakfast, lunch and dinner!
-
I really hope this movie shows us an accurate depiction of an Alien abduction something Fire in the Sky failed to do.
-
The book, that is. The Indian stuff from the movie was not in the book, although alternating chapters from the Wolfen point of view were.
-
for being present at the University of Texas sniper shootings. Of course I heard something since then that implied it made that up, which would seem consistent with the notion that this project is supposedly based on a nonfiction work of his.
-
I have seen it and it blows. Well its not that bad actually and quite funny in parts but the Victor Crowley guy looks ludicrous and laughable, very gory though so i suppose its decent.
-
Will there be prolonged scenes of those filthy Grays shoving phallic probes into human rectums? If so, I demand that the human couple be played by Taylor Rain and Sasha Grey.
-
Now I'm scared...
-
a decent film since Das Boot. For years I've been telling people to give him another chance but now he's had one too many second chances. You've made me look like and asshole Wolfgang Peterson!
-
Nothing to discuss.
-
nice name... I use the same name for turds in the toliet.
you'll never be first, cuz you're number 2
go watch a Uwe Boll movie... fucking Bollhead. -
Did you just say,"Morgan Freeman's RENDEZVOUS WITH RAMA" can't get made? No one wants to make a movie from "Rendezvous With Rama"? With THE Morgan Freeman onboard? With all of the TV shows and remakes that are being dragged through theaters these days, Rendezvous with Rama, the award winning novel by Arthur C. Clarke, can't get its orginal foot in the door? With several sequels to it already written? Ahh, Hollywood, the Cup of Stupidity overflows! Swim in it's cool and numbing waters and soak your head in it! Hey Morgan! Give the project to Michael Bay. He'll get it made! He can do EEENNNIII-THING! He da Man. I am, of course, joking. Sadly.
-
i enjoyed strieber's "i was abducted by aliens" books, even if i never totally bought into them. but i read The Grays, and it sucked!
-
...and parts of it scared the crap out of me - especially the scene at the cabin where Christopher Walken looks from his bed out into the hallway - and that big eyed alien (more tan than gray) slowly peers around the doorway at him. Walken's reaction shot is what sold the whole moment, and that made it some scary shit.
-
... it's got to be Christopher Walken... especially if he's dancing/flying in a hotel lobby.
-
I love that book and can't wait to see it on the big screen. I think they need to get a really big name person to put their name on it as producer to make it happen. I hate to say it but George Lucas, just to throw his weight behind it not to have any creative influence...
-
I read Communion when it was first published and found it well written suspense for the most part. "The "Greys was a serious dissapointment - seemed like Strieber was making shit up as it went along. Parts of it were like juvenile science fiction from the 50's, with cardboard characters (really evil government guys) and magic technology that seemed to convienently arrive to save the day whenever the plot needed a boost. This wouldn't even make for bad television. Communion -the film - was one of the worst book adaptations I've ever seen. If the adaptation of The Greys is worse than the book, it's going straight to video.
-
Can't knock that english spelling out of me.
-
And is probably already an episode of the X Files. When is the Destroy All Humans movie coming out? That'd kick ass.
-
Anyone else like Wolfen with Albert Finney & Gregory Hines? I've not watched it for years but I seem to remember being impressed by the ending. And Communion, "Is that someone there" deeply affected me. But maybe that's because father used to put his finger in my bumole whenever mother went to the local shops.
-
Hell yeah. I love this conspiracy shit. Bush is a fucking giant lizard or an underground dwelling grey. It's true!
-
What the hell are they looking for up there anyway?

poor impressionable famous uber rich german director
by the_man_from_rio
i guess petersen bought the whole he's a cia agent act( maybe it is, maybe it isn't). all i humbly know is that this idea sounds boring pra caralho. give Rendezvous with Rama to someone with pulse, like Fincher(wasn't he attached to that at some point?).
-
Gold. They're looking for gold.
-
Didn't Streiber finally admit that he made up the story he based "Communion" on to help sell his book?
-
I think I also heard that at some point Tom Hanks was working on getting a Rendezvous with Rama film made.
-
I saw Strieber give a talk and answer questions at a bookstore signing...about ten years ago or so. It was really entertaining--we asked all kinds of questions AS IF WE WERE FANS AND BELIEVED in all that UFO stuff. He ate it all up. Seems like a nice guy. Probably bi-polar.
-
this is such a fresh, imaginative and creative idea for a film. this notion of life existing outside of earth is new to me, and i do not recall seeing any film at all of this nature. what will make it a winner is if they get Jack Black in it to show off his acting flair once again. he could do for this what he did for King Kong, no?
-
sorry.
-
That movie rocked! mmmm... Susan Sarandon's titties...
ahem..
Yeah I remember Streiber previously wrote about Roswell being real and about how it had something to do with that was where the bombers that delivered the Bomb to Japan flew from - this was a pivotal, world shaping technology at the time, remember, responsible for a Cold War that lasted half a century.
Anyway, the Rama thing sounded interesting. I don't think anyone should try to blend the first and second books - the first was a good deal more than a short story. I think the second was probably the superior of the sequels so it would probably be a better film if it was a sequel, no? -
Is Koo Koo for Cocoa Puffs.
