A ROBOTECH movie is coming... with everyone's friendly neighborhood wall-crawler at the controls!!!

Published at:  Sep 07, 2007 1:42:18 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Yep, a ROBOTECH flick is finally moving and it looks like you're going to be seeing Tobey Maguire manning a giant robot on the big screen.

Warner Bros is doing the flick and Maguire is producing via his Maguire Entertainment banner. Craig Zahler is writing the script.

Nothing's set in stone yet, but Maguire seems to want to play the lead. I can't pretend to know much about ROBOTECH... I never got into it, but my good friend Kraken is a huge ROBOTECH nerd and says that Maguire is totally wrong for the lead... He totally Yoda'd it. "He's too old!"

What do you folks think?

Then hells yeah "evil emo spidey" is too old. Rick needs to be 17-20 and look it. At least that my thoughts. God Spiderman 3 sucked. I fucking hate anyone involved with it right now. Total suckage. Marvel IRON MAN better be good because you fucked up 2 of my summers in a row with your shit stain movies. X-3 and Spidey 3. If Iron Man sucks Im bitch slapping you. End of Tristeele's drunken rant. Bed Time now night night.

rick hunter was only young during the actual robotech series. since macross leaps several dozens of years, it's not inconceivable to see a plot where we see an older rick hunter aged appropriately for the robotech universe.

casey affleck for rick hunter is a stroke of genuis he's perfect but i can't help but to feel that Battlestar (an excellent show) has kinda stolen some of Robotechs fire. the same way that Heros has stolen watchmen's. they are both great shows and they have equalled there predecessors in quality.... but battlestar doesn't have Varitech fighter... ok let the production begin!

I can see what the producers are thinking now...

    by chico-san

You can break Robotech down to this formula:

Transformers + American Idol + In Space = BoxOfficeGold

Throw in a little "natural disaster" elements (Macross island teleported into space, SDF-1 crashing back to earth etc), fight against an invading alien (yet humanoid) enemy who doesn't understand our "culture" and is hell-bent on our destruction, and the love triangle to get the ladies in the seats.

Zang Ziyi as Lin Minmei, that one sorta casts itself.

    by stereotypical evil archer

Giant Fucking Robots that look like robots! Not fucking alien insects. with 6,000 moving parts. Mecha, man, mecha's the way to go. Maguire knows hollywood, he could make this happen and turn what once was Macross into a cool 2.5 hour ROBOTECH movie. Experience, idealism, fanfare, and writing can make this happen! Go Toby! Age of characters is not a factor, it's about story, a story that could be told in 2.5 hours. Think about it. The situation is the story, and the characters matter. Age? Not a huge factor in a 2.5 hour movie. Young? Yes. Toby Maguire? Young enough? YES! Are any of you producing this movie or making this possible? No. Any arguement against has a poisoned well. Try, but fail, naysayers.

    Toby is Rick.

I think Macaulay Culkin would make a great Max with dyed hair.

Maybe they could get a pop Japanese singer for Minmae.

    Brian Thompson for Bretai.

    Summary

    by dazzler69

If the story is done right it will be 3 movies.

Spaceship lands on Earth and people freak out and start planning a planetary defense with spaceships and mecha because they know the aliens are big from the wreckage. I won't bore with the Rick storyline but it involves a threesome with two chicks so that's cool. The aliens attack and a big problem happens with one of Earth's ships. The aliens are only interested in the ship that got pimped out and want it back so they chase after it since it teleported to Pluto by accident. And action and more action as the Earth ship gets back to Earth.

Hopefully they don't condense the 3 wars into one. This could be the next LOTR if done right.

Be careful what you wish for... here's a quote from AnimeNewsNetwork's article on this:

Due to a copyright dispute that has Studio Nue and Big West, the creators and sponsor of Macross, facing against Harmony Gold's partner Tatsunoko Production, elements from Macross, the most popular of the three series, have not been used in recent and planned Robotech works onscreen.

It may be changed so much it no longer resembles the old show...

Why Rick Hunter Shouldn't Be 30 (The Plan for ROBOTECH)

    by nivekj

Good for Maguire and his production team. I would love to see a Robotech movie, done competently and with skill and energy.

Tobey should not be playing Rick because 1) his role is the entry point to both the Macross and Robotech universe, 2) his youth is what makes the Battle of Macross City so traumatic for him, 3) his youth is what makes him so nervous around Minmei, at first, and 4) his youth puts him around the same age as Minmei (18 vs. 14!). I do not want to see Maguire acting shy around some one who's supposed to be so young. They may up Minmei's age to 20s.

That casting not aside, Warner Bros. has the potential to make the next great sci-fi war movie. Robotech is serious stuff. Characters die, deaths in which both Transformers the Movie AND GIJoe the Movie responded to, killing off Optimus Prime and maiming Duke (who was supposed to die; more on that later). Families become refugees. An entire city gets lost in space. Robotech does not have to play off as campy as it did during the series.

Plus, Warner Bros. can get some serious international bank if tthey play their cards right. Greenscreen the shit out of the Robotech movie. Having Macross be a virtual city. Do it in 3-D! Save the production assets and team up with Tatsunoko Prod. and Studio Nue to make a live-action adaptation of MACROSS using a Japanese cast. If both ROBOTECH and MACROSS succeed, let the storylines diverge. It will make money.

By the way, please don't go gonzo with the transformations. It was hard as hell to tell what was happening during Transformers because there was visual point of reference for the transformations. They would jump and spin and then collide with something and my brain would become confused into thinking it was watching a giant ball of robotic lint. Shit, use stop-motion if you have to, and just fil in a few frames with CGI. Combine the two into one seamless image. Fool your audience into thinking these robots are real by actually using real photography, real miniatures of Macross City (combined with CGI in the right places), and real transforming models of Veritech planes enhanced with CGI (only the cockpit is CGI, for one out of 24 frames, etc.).

If it sounds like I wanted to do the Robotech movie, well, there's a reason. Too bad I didn't get into the business. I just want Warner Bros., and by extension, Maguire, to make the best film possible. Battlestar Galactica should be a concern (it's basically the Robotech story with a genocide instead of an accidental jump). Adama IS Gloval, so avoid similarities in the adaptation. And please cast the movie right. A Robotech movie with Maguire as Rick Hunter COULD work, but you lose a lot in that translation. The character's journey is harder to buy into visually when this young kid becomes a killer/soldier. The youth audience, which WB and other studios crave so much, becomes less attached because they aren't seeing themselves on screen. (But a 20-30 yr. old may get a kick out of Tobey kicking giant alien ass)

Good luck, and btw TBackers, it ain't enough to say something will suck and that's it. Sure is fun, though.

    by wolfmannards

Lucky, mildly talented actor, gets a good role, does a horrible job. Movie does well. Continues to be cast in sequels. Makes millions upon millions of dollars due to success of lucky role. Gets other big roles due to lucky role. Gets to have his own production company. Maguire Entertainment, now there's an oxymoron. Let's, if you will, imagine what it would be like if Maguire was never spiderman. First off, the Spiderman movies would be a touch better. Maguire might have a bit role on some ongoing TV drama, and would be grateful for it. The Spiderman movies would be even MORE successful. We wouldnt have to put up with maguire's mug in any big movies such as the upcoming Robotech. It would be a better world.

BUT, I'm hoping we don't get someone like that girl who plays Tracy with the deviated septum from "Hannah Montana" to play Minmei...that's also very annoying to listen to... Anyway, I have a feeling we're going to have a golden age of Hollywood making live-action anime movies...if only they bring out the "Sailor Moon" movie and NOT set it in Los Angeles...crap, the dub acknowledged they were in Tokyo...and no Geena Davis as Queen Beryl. Just...no. (Ironically, Kirsten was supposed to be Serena/Sailor Moon, but she's going to stick to trying to produce the movie.)

in Spiderman, it's funny that he would want to return to another geek property. I like McGuire and all but I'm wondering what his motivation is for this. I would imagine he would want to do more stuff along the lines of Wonder Boys instead of more geek centric material, especially since he showed such disdain for this kind of stuff previously.

I agree with the previous poster re: BSG. The show is similar in premise -- displaced survivors fleeing from enemies in the far reaches of space -- and is VERY well executed on just about every level. It's a testament to the quality of that show that a ROBOTECH movie would have to be at least as well-done to be worth my money.

This is what i was waiting for! For some of you it was the SW prequels, for others it was Spider-Man, but for me this is the project i've been wanting to see on the big screen my whole life. The Macross Saga is an excelent story and I think Tobey can really pull of Rick Hunter. He IS a little bit old thou. In my opinion they should focus on Rick's story throughout the entire franchise and don't use the second and third chapters of Robotech, wich wheren't even related to Macross in the original version. They have free reign to take liberties since Robotech was alredy an amercan adaptation of SDF Macross, Southern Cross, and that other anime wich name i can't recall.

    by ikaruga

Huge fan of Robotech/Macross. I agree with others who think Tobey should be Max Sterling, not Rick Hunter (Hikaru). Sterling is a modest ass kicker, which fits Spider-man fine. Maybe get the Frodo actor to play Hikaru? After all, Frodo goes through the same transformation as Rick. Starts off a naive and innocent youngster, ends his journey carrying the weight of the world on his shoulder as he leads Skull Squadron into battle... after the holocaust of the human race.

Dennis Leary as Roy Fokker works appearance wise, but Leary's got too much of that "I'm an asshole" schtick attached to him. Fokker wasn't an asshole. He liked pineapple salad and war wasn't a game to him.
Think about it. If Dennis Leary got shot up in a dogfight, he'd be crying like hell, swearing at everyone around him. He wouldn't play the guitar and die nobly. lol.

    by ikaruga

I'm thinkin Lisa Hayes could be played by Helen Hunt. Jennifer Aniston has the Lisa Hayes "look" but I don't know if she really fits the role as much as Helen Hunt would.

I'd be surprised if the character of Min-mei didn't get a lot of changes, though. She's pretty much an airhead, with Hikaru giving her a good slap to the face in the Macross movie. And Hikaru dumps her for Lisa as he grows into adulthood. I'd be surprised if they kept this aspect fairly intact. It's rare a love story has the guy dumping his first love for a more mature and older woman.

    by ikaruga

Dude, do you know the history of Robotech? The creators of Robotech took three completely unrelated anime shows, slapped them together, made up complete nonsense about how they connected with each other, and called it Robotech.

For example "Dana Sterling" of Robotech is NOT the daughter of Max Sterling. There are no Robotech Masters. None of that crap made any sense because they had no connection to each other.

All we should care about is the Macross saga (Rick Hunter, the SDF 1). :-P

I don't mind Maguire, but his voice doesn't exactly inspire "authority." Still, I'm looking forward to the scene where Rick Hunter (boldy played by Maguire) walks into a bar after crashing his robot jet, drinks a lot, then starts playing the piano and dancing on the bar top - instantly earning the respect of all his fellow robot jockeys! Now whomever doesn't shed a tear of inspiration at that scene has a very cold heart.

    by ikaruga

Shadow Chronicles (which I haven't seen) is just a show for a niche audience. Robotech, the Hollywood movie, is aimed to make hundreds of millions of dollars. I'm sure some coin can be tossed around to pay for lawyers and what not.

... Also, to add to what someone else said, this movie can be Transformers + American Idol, but don't forget Top Gun. Top Gun, last I heard, was the most rented movie in US history. It's too bad Tom Cruise isn't a young whippersnapper anymore. His Born on the Fourth of July character is pretty Hikaru-ish.

Man, I gotta be in this movie. Tobey Maguire, if you're reading this, hire me to be an extra! I want to get killed and say "UWAGGHH!" as my cockpit explodes around me. I've already been a Japanese fighter pilot extra in Michael Bay's Pearl Harbor. So I've got experience, dammit!!

Just like they made a "Transformers" movie that has nothing to do with the original toy commercials (which itself was lifted from Japanese toys), they'd want to make a "Robotech" movie just to milk the nostalgia. But I think all those in the US who actually remember what Robotech was, are all smart (and old) enough to understand it was just 3 different shows (And for everyone else outside of US, it WAS just 3 different shows). Unless your heart is really set on playing Rick, this is what I would do (and I know how much that counts).

Director: Peter Jackson or Bryan Singer
Writers: The two guys who work with Bryan Singer or Joss.

    Cast:
Rick Hunter-Michael Cera (by the time this gets made he'll look old enough it won't be creepy to be with Jenna Fischer.)
    Lisa Hayes- Jenna Fischer
    Lyn MinMei-Summer Glau
    Captain Gloval-Edward James Olmos
    Claudia Grant- Gina Torres
    Roy Fokker-Nathan Fillion
    Max Sterling-Milo Ventimiglia
    Myra-Christina Hendricks
    Bretai-Clancy Brown

    by bass ackwards

Presumably if they're making Robotech they're aiming at the first "season," which would all be the same show. Obviously since the other shows were weaved into it by making big generational jumps there wouldn't be much interest in using them for one movie. Anyways, Robotech actually has a really great premise, I don't much care how faithful the characters/designs/stories are (well maybe I care a lil about the designs), a movie adapted from that premise could be pretty kick ass.

Could be worse, could be Wing Commander cast...

    by kraken

    nder...

Freddy PRince Jr as Rick, Geller as Minmay, Illard as Fokker. Kill me.

But now they just need to talk the Wachowski siblings into directing, that'd be about perfect.

    It is epic

    by thefutureoffilm

but my hope in the translation is that it wouldn't lose its anti-war message. That show was at least in my opinion, was vehemently anti war. Yes it was filled with nothing but human vs alien war but that was to show the bad side of war.

    Ikaruga and LTchief

    by bionic bigfoot

    You are both wrong.

replace Tommy Gavin's fireman suit with a sweet flair-collared flightsuit and you basically have Roy Fokker. Roy would've cussed and humped alot more if he wasn't in a cartoon. He clearly had the kid gloves on...clearly.

and Ikaruga...Helen Hunt as Lisa Hayes? She could play Lisa Hayes' grandmother or Great Aunt maybe. Maybe the "Hunter" in Rick's last name stands for "GILF Hunter"? Have you even seen her this decade?

I'll show you how to cast a movie....

    Jared Leto as Max Sterling.

    BAM!

A remake is a great place to fix the continuity

    by inwosuxred

between the three seperate shows and make them one. Robotech Masters wasn't that great, but it could still be a great live-action story. Next Generation is even better, and I always liked Scott's constant talk about Commander Hunter. I'd much rather this be a TV show that casts actors rather than names, and I would like it to run throught he same three stores that Robotech did. I have no loyalty to Macross, and certainly don't need to see a live action remake of a Macross movie.

Robotech was the best of the 80's anime imports

    by corvette63

Sure it was 3 different series smashed together but the story line held up. A Macross movie would be cool but my preference would be for an Invid Invasion movie. The mecha was cooler and Tobey would be much better suited to play Scott Benard than Rick Hunter.

    LASERPANTS - PLEASE SHUT UP!!!

    by bass bastardson

As of now, the Hollywood machine is busy crushing my dreams of writing/directing a movie adaptation of Macross/Robotech. The only other anime I am dying to adapt is Galaxy Express 999. It is not nearly as well known to the mainstream public as Voltron or Robotech, BUT if you keep putting the title in your headlines, someone might see it and get the ball rolling without me. They will inevitably fuck it up. That's what these people do. So please, just keep quiet and give me another 10 to 15 years to get it done right. Please? (Sorry, it's going to take so long, but I have to move up another notch or two on the tinsel town totem pole before I can get it done.)

    by johnno

I want to make Evangelion myself... there's still a chance! :P I also wanted to make Robotech.... well rather I want to make a Macross movie of my own that's unique and fits in with the anime chronology pleasing both fans and new audiences. I even had a cool working title for it... 'Macross Millenium'! Like it? No...? Well it was just an initial idea... But chronologically it would take place before the events of Macross Plus... there'd be a Sharon Apple concert segment and everything!

    ROBOTECH As Mash-Up Of Macross/Southern Cross/Mospeada

    by laserpants

I know purists cringe, but the thing about this whole mash-up is that its actually very well done, keeping the basics of each completely seperate show intact, while being its own creation completely. Its kind of amazing that Harmony Gold was able to pull it off. Its easily the best of the 80s cartoons, and although it altered the story, I think it deserves respect for being an excellent sci-fi / action / human drama / robot story.

    by stalkeye

Not based on that US watered down shitfest known as BOTP either. I heard takeshi miike is working on a live action version and that was it.Anyway IGN's casting suggestions are fucking lame..except for that seth guy from knocked up as the obnoxious pilot Ben.Tobey as Rick? anything is possible just look at who's playing the part of Tony stark..

Minmay is actually supposed to be half Chinese, half Japanese, so Utada Hikaru could play her. Utada can also sing and speak English and is already an idol in Japan.

    What I'D like to see......

    by jazner

I can deal with Maguire as Rick, but I'd like to see who else auditions for the role. To me, director is everything, so that said, here's my short list of cast and crew:

    Director: Joss Whedon (Serenity)
    Rick: Toby Maguire (for now)
    Roy: Nathan Fillion (Serenity)
    Lisa: Scarlet Johansen (The Island)
    Max: Milo Ventimiglia (Heroes)
    Claudia: Gina Torres (Serenity)

Now, does anyone know if or how Harmony Gold actually signed off on this? They've been behaving very much like a company that doesn't want anyone looking too close to their claims of ownership of Macross. I find it hard to believe this is all a deal between WB and Harmony Gold.

Unless Harmony Gold agreed to a continuation of Robotech that will feature only the mecha and characters they truly to have the rights to. Maybe this won't have much to do with Macross.

    by argentino

Just but a team of hollywood lawyers on the case, Tobey. I want to follow Rick's story from young naive pilot to soldier and leader. By the way, I love the idea of Scarlet Johanson for Lisa. Tobey can play Rick if they are planning to show an adult rick in sombe part of the movie (o sequel) while making Tobey look jounger at the begining of the movie.

    Casting Lisa Hayes

    by teaparty

Just remember guys, she has to be the old lady that Rick falls for, not some 20something flavour of the month. She needs to be in the MILF catagory. My pick is Laura Linney as she has the acting depth, commanding voice and the body to boot. Also this thing HAS to be a trilogy or MORE!

    Teaparty

    by argentino

I LOVE Laura Linney (and MILFs in feneral ;), but Lisa doesn't need to be a MILF. She was a young woman who became bitter and serius after tragic events like the dead of his boyfriend. If they play her as a smart, mature and strong womas, someone like Scarlet Johanson or Julia Stiles can be great for the role. Imagine Tobey with Laura Linney, she's to old for him, it doesn't work. And if Tobey steps aside and casts someones else as Rick, it would be someone even jounger.

    Sigh about movies

    by travestysoul

Ok...here's a few things. First, what movie ever takes after the story line of a tv show? They always change stuff up or make it "pretty". So don't expect the story line to be the same, you'll be disappointed, I prefer they don't keep it the same. Make something a bit new, since it can't take place in 2009 :-P. Now as for casting, they'll go with major money makers just to get people in that have never heard of robotech, or super space fortress macross. So expect Tom Cruise to go in as Roy Fokker (c'mon he was in top gun we all know he wants back in the pilot seat). Shaia Lebough or Zac Efron will be in there. I think Tobey got mashed from his past couple movies. I'd throw in Megan Fox as a prospect only cause they need a hot chick, and if you want a minmay in there...remember she was 14 or 15 in the original cartoon, so it might be creepy having your main character (who will probably be in his 30's) making out with the 15 y/o chick. You also need to remember that Macross 2 the movie was taking place during an alternate universe/timeline so they have another out for the whole movie deal. Ok I'm done
