"Deep Space Nine" finale news / "Black Hole" DVD troubles !!!

SPOILER ALERT !!

Glen here...

...with a few quick tidbits of information.

DS9 SERIES FINALE RUMOR CONTROL: PART
1

First up, I have (literally) just received the script to the final episode of Star Trek: Deep
Space Nine
.

It is called "What You Leave Behind". I have not had the chance to go through it yet,
and I want to make sure everyone knows...in advance...that no substantial spoilers for the episode
will be forthcoming from Coaxial.

I will, however, sit down...read it...and make an attempt to dispel any erroneous rumors
which are floating around out there on the Net right now. Other than that, in no way do I way plan to
blow the show or ruin the experience of the last DS9 episode for anyone interested in
watching it, etc. But as a service to Trek fans...and this site's readers...I would like for the
information currently available on this episode to be as accurate as possible without giving too much
away. The series deserves that dignity , I think.

Now, I've already heard the plot of this episode (I grilled my source for the information), and
did a cursory glance through of the script before I started typing. Here's a response to some of the
rumors currently floating around out there in cyberspace.

THE ENUMERATIONS BELOW ARE SIMPLY ADDRESSING FALSE RUMORS
ALREADY CIRCULATING ON THE NET. I DO NOT CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING
INFORMATION TO BE SPOILERS.

NONE THE LESS, IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BE
AWARE OF THE ACCURACY / INACCURACY OF SOME OF THESE RUMORS, TURN
BACK NOW !!!

** No Enterprise-E appears in the finale. There is a space battle which could, in theory, incorporate the ship - but
no Enterprise-E characters (other than DS9 series regular Worf) appear in the script, and
there is no specification that the Enterprise-E makes an appearance in any way.

** No Gowron.

** No Spock.

** No Sloane (although there is a reference to Section 31).

THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION MAY BE CONSIDERED SPOILERS TO THOSE
WHO WISH TO KNOW *** NOTHING AT ALL *** ABOUT DS9'S FINALE, BUT
THIS IS ABOUT AS DETAILED AS IT'S GONNA GET HERE AT COAXIAL. IT'S A LIST
OF THE CHARACTERS WHO ** DO ** APPEAR IN "WHAT YOU LEAVE
BEHIND".

REMEMBER, JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE ISN'T IN THIS EPISODE DOESN'T
MEAN SOMETHING BAD HAS HAPPENED TO THEM IN PREVIOUS EPISODES, ETC.
IT COULD JUST BE THE WAY THE STORY IS LAID OUT.

WHO DOES APPEAR IN DS9'S CONCLUSION:

Sisko

Kira

Bashir

O'Brien

Worf

Ezri

Odo

Quark

Jake

Computer Voice

Kasidy

Nog

Keiko

Molly

Garak

Weyoun

Damar

Female Shapeshifter

Vic Fontaine

Mila

Sarah Prophet

Dukat

Winn

Ross

Martok

Jem' Hadar

Jem'Hadar First

Ekoor

Ginger

Morn (non-speaking)

Kirayoshi (non-speaking)

N.D. Supernumeraries

Glen's favorite line so far:

NOG (setting off on a space convoy): If I get lost, I'll just follow the ships in front of me.

So, that's it. I'm not interested in blowing the lid off this thing, and that's about as detailed as I
am gonna get in covering this episode. Not because I don't care, and it's not because I don't want to
jump up and down & spread the word about "What You Leave Behind". But the folks at
DS9 have worked too hard...and come too far...to have their thunder stolen by a guy like
me this late in the game.

After reading the script more thoroughly, I will glance around to see if there are any other
rumors dancing about which I may be able to address without revelaing to much of the episode's
content and structure.

Hope this helps...

THE BLACK HOLE DEBACLE

In response to all the e-mails and questions I have received regarding Anchor Bay's recent
re-release of The Black Hole, and problems with the sound on the newly issued DVD

In short: yes, there are many people reporting problems with the surround sound on the
DVD (most specifically a substantial drop-off on the disc's right channel).

Anchor Bay has issued no official statement about these troubles, and many retailers (like Ken
Cranes) are awaiting AB's statement on the product's ultimate disposition before letting their
customers know how to proceed (recall / refund in favor of a re-release at a latter date? Hold on
to your discs until some new discs are pressed & swap 'em out? They're defective - just deal with
it...etc.)

Some on-line stores are already recalling the discs - that's that. Other outlets are waiting.
Where's Anchor Bay in all of this? I was singing their praises last week on this page, but damn it,
they need to make some decisions and fast.

As for anyone interested in buying this title, I would suggest waiting a bit longer - until
AB gets their shit together (and until people who have already purchased this title are satisfied)
before purchasing the disc. It may save you a lot of trouble in the bigger picture...

    Anchor Bay's official reply

    by chambers

They are currently fixing the problem new discs are being made and should start being shiped on the 19th. Here is their reply: "Last week, we received reports of a problem with the 5.1 sound in the DVD release of the sci-fi thriller The Black Hole. We've confirmed that there is a problem in the sound on channel 5 of the Dolby 5.1 mix. The problem should be noticeable in the Dolby 5.1 mode only.

"As a result, Buena Vista Technical Services will deliver a new DLT on Saturday April 10, 1999. Anchor Bay Entertainment expects to ship the corrected product by April 19, 1999 and will take care of any retailer or individual customer who has experienced a problem."

yeah i noticed that too, but i was still kinda hoping for something along the lines of "....from what little i read of it, i can tell fans are gonna go nuts over the ending" etc. etc.

As long as Sisko gets pissed and bangs some heads together, i'll be satisfied....

    Finale

    by lord_darth

Well, There are a lot of rumors and I hear the script really kicks butt. It will supposedly have a lot of Space battles something we are all waiting for. And I also hear that Worf goes back to the Enterprise E.

    Minimal Spoilers

    by jackstar

While I'm looking more forward to
the (hopefully better) Star Trek projects to come out after DS9 and V'ger finish up, I have to say I like the minimal spoilers decision. I think in general people learning way too much about projects before they come out, and the self control shown here is admirable.

    VIC FONTAINE????

    by mckracken

hea...THAT character is one of the stupidest, lamest characters ever to be created by Rick Berman and company....besides they JUST FEATURED Vic Fontaine in that stupid as hell gambling/crack the holosafe episode...ugh! I hope he gets killed else Rick Berman might deside to put him in a DS9 movie...AHAHAHA!!!!!

    Vic Fontaine

    by blok narpin

I am INCAPABLE of disagreeing more with your comments about Vic Fontaine. I think he has been an EXCELLENT addition to the show. He is funny, and has a great singing voice. In fact, I hope those guys at Paramount's merchandising department wise up and comission a DS9/Vic Fontaine CD. I'd buy it in a sec! As for the episode where Franky Eyes took over Vic's casino and the crew had to rob the vault, I LOVED it. It was pure fun from begining to end. I laughed so hard. I think that was one of the highlights not only of this year but the whole series. I love this show and I love Vic. I hate to see then go.

    Where is he?!?

    by gulkhaish

I noticed one integral name missing from your character list for the DS9 finale - Dukat! They can't finish DS9 without such an excellent character being in it! Say, I hope that doesn't mean he's been bumped off in an earlier story..

    it's no bab5

    by pukelick

i was a fan of ds9 up until the stupid wormhole aliens got involved in the dominion war. typical trek cheating. here's what the finale should resolve:
why did the star trek franchise de-evolve into intelligence insulting drivel? and "7 of 36D" from voyager. what the hell is that? she actually had a weapon with a boob-cup in it, and a red spotlight that shone back on her right breast. well, i guess she's alright.
    babylon 5 lives...

    Why not tell us?

    by cnuzzi

You know, some of us, like myself, WANT to be spoiled with every bit of info we can get. We read scripts and novelizations before the movie, etc. Why not post the info and let us decide if we want to see it? Why can't someone do a web site where they post ALL info they get, instead of waving it in our faces and then saying "sorry, ain't gonna tell ya!" Maybe this site should change its name to "Ain't it cool what I know and you don't".
Don't get me wrong, I love this site. I've been reading it daily from day one. But if you're not gonna share, Glen, don't bother to tell us that you know.

    by chapaev

    AAAAAAAARGH!!!!!!!!
I've just red the spoiler at "The Universe".If it's the truth then everything concerning Sisko's fate in the finale is a complete Babylon 5 Season 4/"Sleeping In Light" rip off.
Glen, you've seen the script - PLEASE TELL THAT IT'S NOT TRUE!!!!

    DS9

    by dittyman

I remember watching the premiere of DS9 seven years ago. At the time, I was an avid Star Trek fan. I thought the show had great potential, but that porential was never realized. It devolved into a space soap opera. Only occasionally would an episode interest me, like the episode that took place in the past about the Tribbles, with Kirk.(Sorry, I don't know the title) All I want to say is that the show could have been better. It didn't really ever greatly interest me like Star Trek TNG, but I wanted it to.

Spoilers and the hypocrisy of AICN

    by mjbok

I hope that it's good, but that said...I really like this site. Have since I started coming here a year ago. But the hypocrisy of this site is amazing. You like Star Trek so you won't give spoilers, but a project that you don't find as important you will give them for. I agree that an artists 'art' (movies, television, etc.) deserve a certain amount of respect, but just 'cause you have never heard of a project or don't think it is important then you can provide spoilers ? You guys are playing God. Alot of it does sound like bragging, ie 'I have this, but I won't tell you about it 'cause this project deserves respect.' This other project I don't care much for so the plot is...Provide spoilers or don't, or at least don't tell about them. You practice 'situational ethics' which is a contradiction in terms. Something is either ethical or it is not. Be a spoiler or don't. You can't play both sides of the fence and pick and choose what is deserving of spoilers and still pretend to be serving the public interest.
