Borat's schedule firms up. What's next for Sacha Baron Cohen?

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Everybody loves Sasha Baron Cohen. We knew he was working on a few things (a role in Tim Burton's SWEENEY TODD and lots of hugging and kissing of a hot redhead) and it was made pretty clear right after BORAT hit that his next starring role would be a movie version of his BRUNO character. Now it looks like he's ready to start going on BRUNO and that he'll follow that up with a studio comedy... a remake, no less, of a French film called LE DINER DE CONS. The remake will be called DINNER WITH SCHMUCKS and will be directed by Jay Roach (AUSTIN POWERS flicks and MEET THE PARENTS flicks) for Dreamworks. I can definitely say I'm looking forward to Bruno, but I'm not as convinced on SCHMUCKS. Cohen is hilarious, we know that, so I'll certainly give it a shot. What about you?

    lame, I know....

  • Sept. 5, 2007, 1:19 a.m. CST

    Not sure about this remake.

    by DerLanghaarige

The original was pretty 50/50. Some parts worked, some parts not. So the chances are good that the remake might be MUCH better than the original. Well, give it a try. Cohen is talented. And now he is working with Jay Roach, so maybe they become friends or something and he will play a henchman in Austin Powers 4! (If this will ever happen.)

  • Sept. 5, 2007, 1:19 a.m. CST

Schmucks must be good if he's still attached

    by smackvein

His name has been attached to that one since Da Ali G Show was airing. The script must be decent if he's still going to do it, years after it was announced.

  • Sept. 5, 2007, 1:24 a.m. CST

    Cohen & Roach? I'm there.

    by LoneGun

Roach's Austin Powers films were frackin' great, while Cohen is Hollywood's biggest comedy bad boy at the moment. Definitely interested in DINNER WITH SCHMUCKS

  • Sept. 5, 2007, 1:36 a.m. CST

The original was very funny. Cohen a good choice.

    by Bungion Boy

The original (American title was The Dinner Game) was good, but isn't so sacred that a remake would be wrong. This could be really funny. Here's hoping.

  • Sept. 5, 2007, 1:40 a.m. CST

Wasn't this announced around three years ago?

    by Lenny Nero

I know that this story is pretty much an indication of reverse-turnaround, but still, I heard about this news before I had seen one bit of the Ali G show.

  • Sept. 5, 2007, 1:41 a.m. CST

    Ahh...there ya go, SmackVein.

    by Lenny Nero

Beat me to it. <p> I think the original is a flippin' fantastic movie, and this could be a great American film if handled well.

  • Sept. 5, 2007, 1:49 a.m. CST

If it really must be remade, he is a good choice, yeah.

    by where_are_quints_hobbit_set_reports

Frankly, he could Eddie Murphy this one and do dual roles, I'd pay to see that. Otherwise, I hope he's the straight man, not the idiot... he'd be much better as the host. <p> The biggest problem I foresee is that the story is very stageplay-esque... I hope they don't add a kung-fu fight on the wing of an airplane or something.

    Can Bruno Work?

    by DOGSOUP

"The problem with this trick is that it only works once." Seriously, with all the attention that surrounded Borat is there anyone left in the world whop will be fooled enough to make this funny?

    Physically fit, physically fit, physicallyphysically-

    by half vader

physically fit! <p> This story makes me remember that Will Ferrel car salesman (or was it real estate?) movie that went away. What the hell is happening with that? We had to endure that fucking poor man's bad news bears soccer flick instead? Come ON man!

    Roach's Original Films are good

    by J Skell

the first austin powers film and meet the parents were both quite good. The sequels were utter muck where he simply repeated the same jokes/dynamics that made the originals somewhat different in the first place. So as long as it's not austin powers 4 or meet the friggen whoevers. I'm happy and hope he goes 3 for 3

  • Sept. 5, 2007, 2:18 a.m. CST

    Dogsoup, no...

    by half vader

It's worked twice already, and in the same show! Borat was on the Ali G show remember? They're basically the same character using the same shtik. And if you know about the Australian character Norman Gunston and to a more minor degree Dame Edna you'll know this sort of thing has been around for a long time and is a pretty classic and established comedy device by now. <p> Maybe the quote you're looking for is "third time's a charm". Unless of course you're being a bit myopic and not only talking movies but American released movies or Successful American-released movies in which case fair enough, sort of.

  • Sept. 5, 2007, 2:30 a.m. CST

I've never been more uncomfortable than when Bruno

    by half vader

interviewed the skinhead and the band at that skinhead music festival on the Ali G show. The band are actually making Heil Hitler salutes and so on and Bruno is there asking in his leatherette jacket asking them about how they enjoyed getting hot and sweaty in the club there with other men and so on. Then there's the moment where they get past his accent and sort of realise the gay implications of what he's been saying. Which is when my blood runs cold and I start shouting GET OUT OF THERE! Then he's interviewing this bovver boi at a bus stop and when HE realises what's going on you expect that he's going to go the full "Liverpool kiss" on Cohen. <p> Fuck he's a brave guy. <p> Oh P.S. Dogsoup I made a mistake - of course Bruno was on the Ali G show too. Not sure though if he was in the American version of the show or whether you got the original British stuff too. In any case there's been an Ali G movie (not that good), a Borat movie (well we all know about that one) and now Bruno.

    Bruno is his weakest character

    by Hamtaro_Hentai

I'm no homophobe, it he's just not that funny. I'd rather see Borat 2 but I don't know how he could pull it off with how big the Borat movie became. I just know that I used to turn the channel after the Borat bit on his show, because that was always the best bit. I'd rather see him do something different.

  • Sept. 5, 2007, 4:30 a.m. CST

    RE: cromwell

    by smackvein

This news is a late development. Baron Cohen said last year that the Bruno deal was exaggerated, and his commitment with Universal was to see if the film could even be developed. Variety posted this story tonight because Sacha's reps have only recently signed contracts. Though the Bruno story is old, only recently has Sacha officially committed to making it before next year's strike.

"Schmucks" has been on IMDB as in production for at least a year. The Bruno film was listed on IMDB as in production beginning several monts ago. It began "filming" in May. Check out imdb, they get studio verification before the move the status. I remember seeing the Bruno listing as filming since early summer. Old news.

  • Sept. 5, 2007, 6:55 a.m. CST

    Michael Douglas should play Brochand.

    by Well-Armed Lamb

I'm guessing Cohen will play Pigneon (I'd always imagined Danny Devito in a remake, but that's just because he looks so much like Jacques Villeret). I'm curious to see who they get to play Brochand -- the straight man is key to the whole thing. I'd suggest Michael Douglas, who has the perfect rich asshole vibe. Be great fun to see Cohen take the piss out of him.

Half Vader, he did the same sort of thing in USA

    by James_O'Nasty

He interviewed a farmboy gun nut at a gun show and it was cringe-inducing as the guy wised up to all the questions "Why do you think shooting is now the #1 gay activity?" He was threatened when he asked the guy if he was gay and then urged him to just go for it, be gay! Then the guy, tight-lipped says "I ain't gay and if you say it again, I'mon kick your ass!" This was followed by 30 seconds of Bruno cocking his head, putting the mike upto the side of his head, turning to the producer and speaking German... same sort of tense "this is amazing, RUN! Holy crap holy crap holy crap!!!!"

    Bruno - The Film

    by Jaws Wayne

I have the feeling that Bruno movie could be another laugh-riot/winner. I sure had a great time with the Bruno sketches. The skinhead scenes are indeed the stuff of legend, a brave guy indeed. Remember the scenes where he goes to Alabama ... Some great questions to Shaud Williams, player for the Buffalo Bills " Are you allowed to date members of the team or do you have to wait till the season is over". He also asks him what he has to say to all admirers of the guy who are "wondering what his schwanzen-stuck looks like". And hey, as Bruno he also managed to kiss Gisele Bundchen's wonderful face. Cohen is the man.

    Bruno Sucks

    by robotdevil

Bruno is an awful character that has never made me even smile much less laugh. Of the big 3 Cohen characters (Ali G, Borat and Bruno) Bruno isn't even the same ballpark as the other two. I'll be skipping that one for sure.

  • Sept. 5, 2007, 10:58 a.m. CST

    Bruno's a pretty weak character...

    by KillaKane

I'm sure it'll be an effective side swipe at the fashionistas. But the inherant comical aspects of Borat's character are, IMHO less obvious with Bruno, which seems to be one long gay riff (albeit one that serves to ensnare prejudice and ignorance etc). I'm more interested in Le Diner de Cons, Roach and Cohen are a good pairing, the potential's there for something memorable.

Shut the fuck up already. God, you fucking suck. The reason why Borat is funny? The fact that smart people have to explain why Borat is funny. But for you myopic fucking dickbags the explanation is simple: It's funny because the wild fucking ignorant turds he tricks are just middle American fucktards with 'Traditional American Values' whatever the fuck that is. Yes, I am calling most of the right wing fucktarded. Yes, I do believe I'm smarter than most of the dumb fucking willfully ignorant shitbags on the right. The shit you people buy for the sake of Jeebus and your belief that the man in the sky gives half a shit what happens down here on Earth. I've finally had enough of you jingoistic shitbags ruining MY FUCKING COUNTRY. I can't have a goddamned conversation, or read a review witout one of you donk-monkeys braying from the fucking branches about how Cohen hates fucking America. By the way, if the fake fucking illusion of God gave a shit, why would he let you hateful fucks blame the poor for their condition in HIS NAME?<p> The top 2 percenters have decided that to keep you schmucks ignorant keeps them in power, and the best way to keep you ignorant is to malign reason and intelligence for the sake of voodoo 'Tradition'.<p>Stop polluting the fucking talkbacks with your reactionary bullshit already. And to show that I'm much fucking smarter than all you morons, I'm requesting that anyone disagreeing with my hate-filled invective go ahead and step up, or shut the fuck up already.

    by Charlie Murphy

i'm not sure why... he's not instantly funnier than Borat, but Sascha really had to rely on his quick timing to make Bruno funny, whereas with Borat all you have to do is cheap gags. i'm a little interested in how people will possibly be fooled by Bruno, though. everyone and their dog saw borat, so i'm sure it'll be little tougher to see folks on this character, since people know sascha's face now. we'll see, i guess...

However I'm registered Democrat to keep my options open during Primary season. Okay, that aside, I'm saying those on the Right Wing bandwagon are STUPID. <p> So can I call you a nigger to your face? Can I call you a fucking dirty Jew? Is that fine? No, it's not, because, stupid, HATE SPEECH NO MATTER ITS TARGET IS WRONG. Which is what political correctness started as. There, in all caps for you to read. 'Political Correctness' goes too far at times, but my problem is that you idiots take something like a talkback about a fucking comedy and turn it into fucking Hannity and Combes without the token Liberal dialogue. <p> My words were harsh, but true. You're stupid. The end. Your beliefs cause problems that would be easily avoided if we just said that your beliefs are no more important than mine. But you can't and like all fucking dumbshit bullies you won't shut the fuck up about hate. I don't hate you, and here's the part that's going to REALLY fire you up numbnuts, I PITY the fact that you don't know who's really FUCKING you over here. You think it's liberals and their so-called 'agenda' that's changing what you hold dear? Nope, it's the fact that the median IQ is raising around the country and people are snapping out of it. <p>As for laying claim to the country, it was founded by men who knew the dangers of you dumb fucking religious morons taking control of the government, or some dipshit corporate shill. (I'm including Hillary and others as well in this. ) And the fact that you rah-rah around the fucking flag and accuse ME of racism is the typical fucking reactionary bullshit the Right manages to use.<p>You brought up the ills of society's past, not me. If YOU feel guilt and shame over how this land was founded, you should do something about it. I don't pretend to give a shit about that or them. I don't pretend anything, just that I'm smarter than the people who consistently vote against their own interests. Also, this is kind of fun, because the ploy works on you reactionary dumbfucks...Call you out, and you start braying about how Liberals this and Liberals that...There's more fish in the see than just Amurricans and Commies (or whatever jingoistic bullshit you've come up with lately). This land belongs to those willing to fight for it, and exercise the rights granted in the Constitution...namely the First Amendment, but since I also make great use of the others in my daily life, and defend the rights of others (Even you, dummy.) when possible I stand on the moral high ground. I will now fuck off, having proven my point. There was no fucking conversation, just you claiming I'm a 'Commie' for calling you dumb. <p>Later, dummies.

They take a crucifix, they do a scheize in a mold of a crucifix, they freeze it, and on stage they put it up zer arsche. Does this happen with Eminem and ze likes of him ..? Stamper : Well, hum yeah probably Marilyn Manson I would think would be the closest. Bruno : I heard Marilyn Manson did something like this, he did- I don't know if a scheize but I think he did schpunken in ze mold of a crucifix and drank it and then SPAT it into and kissed actually the devil on stage and let him suck ze schpunken from his mouth... He's far from innocent. In the Romanian village that he filmed as Kazakhastan, he paid the villagers a pittance, comparable to 3 to 5 dollars, for the privilege of mocking their poverty and literally dragging animals and their feces into their homes. There's nothing brilliant about that. It's a foul act of ugly exploitation, which I have a difficult time finding humorous.

BSB, I get your point about badly paid foreign villagers (was that revealed on the DVD bonus materials ?), but even if this was the case, I'm pretty sure Cohen had little to do with that as I don't think he coughed up the budget for the movie himself. But I do see how you could be annoyed by things like that.As for all you guys who scream at each other and your stupid black and white generalizations, wise up. I'm suprised some Cohen characters are that provocative to some. Some of you make it sound as if the man is the horned one himself. He's a smart comedian. The man notices things about human behavior and like all good comedians likes to turn things upside down and provoke his "targets" (and some of us) a little. What's wrong with smart and intelligent comedians ? I'm really glad to have this guy doing his stuff on television and movies, many of his goofy and silly sketches and jokes had me laughing really hard and loud and that's always a good thing. by NEUR0M4NCER

Don't get me wrong, we've got just as many wankers in our country as you have in the US, but fuck me - on an AICN Talkback? Seems the biggest problem you've got is that you have an idea of each group, and as soon as someone identifies themselves as 'belonging' to one of those groups, you have to... well, just hate them. Hard. Get the fuck over it guys - none of your flapping's gonna unite your country the way it should be.

    Oh... and SBC

    by NEUR0M4NCER

Cohen played very fast and loose with Borat - it'll be interesting to see how far he'll go with another 'reality' film... or rather how far the studio LETS him, for fear of law-suits. Bruno will be law-suit central.

How do you keep a straight face while wailing about how you're being "dehumanized" when you've made it clear in the past that you view genocide as perfectly acceptable in times of war? <p> You are a hideous, miserable, hypocritical piece of shit whose existence is a lamentable waste of food, space and breathable air. I defend your right to say whatever you please, but I also think the world would be a slightly better place if you were run over by a bus tomorrow.

  • Sept. 6, 2007, 5:17 p.m. CST

    Ah, your old argument...

    by DocPazuzu

...that genocide only applies to certain types of men, women and children. If they belong to an ethnic or religious group you find objectionable, then killing them wholesale (even the kids, by your own admission) isn't genocide. Yes, that does make you a hypocrite by any definition. <p> It's no coincidence that you're hiding under a new name. If I'd been teabagged as many times as you've been in talkback I might have done the same eventually. <p> As for me being a "liberal hypocrite", that's just you labeling me and then attacking me when I don't live up to that ridiculous label. I mean how fucking weak an argument is that? I never called myself a liberal and I certainly never said that I have "compassion for all living things". But then again, look who I'm talking to: an utter loon who thinks of George Bush as a liberal and calls fascists "leftists". You are so far into the twilight zone of right-wing insanity that virtually everyone - including Hitler and Mussolini - are to the left of you. <p> And yes, the world would be a better place if you swallowed a razor blade or two.

    Oh, and AnimalStructure/Thunderballs...

    by DocPazuzu

...the lamest thing you've attempted so far is trying to shame me into leaving you alone by comparing me to an obsessive or telling me to "get a life". Sorry, but that desperate shit doesn't work on me. <p> Rest assured that I will hound your despicable ass wherever you decide to show up in talkback to spew forth your evil bile. Change your username however many times you wish, it won't matter. I've tamed you numerous times before and I will continue to do so as long as you're here.

  • Sept. 6, 2007, 6:43 p.m. CST

    You ARE...

    by DocPazuzu

...beneath me, both intellectually and morally, and here's an example: <p> I do believe in killing Islamist terrorists. The difference between you and me is that you believe killing an ENTIRE Muslim population in a region is "killing terrorists" whereas I think killing terrorists means just that. So, what exactly is the difference between a Nazi willing to exterminate a people (men, women and children) who are "threatening" his country and you? Nothing, that's what. <p> There are certainly elements of socialist doctrine in fascism, such as the hatred of the free market and the stock exchange, but in every fascist state there has existed an alliance between huge corporations and the government. It's an extremist right-wing symbiosis where industry supplies the government with the goods it needs in exchange for the government's strict enforcement of a rigorous class structure and the suppression of trade unions as well as the persecution of labor movements, and the imprisonment and/or murder of socialists and liberals. <p> Fascist doctrines have used leftist rhetoric as well as nationalist sentiment to win popular support in every instance, but they have done NOTHING to erode class. If anything, they've turned it into a plutocratic slave state, with profit being maximized for the select few. <p> Furthermore, fascists have NEVER come to power without the support of traditional conservative elements. <p> Like I previously stated, I don't consider myself a liberal, but your myopia prevents you from stepping away from this argument and addressing the issues at hand. Instead you throw labels around and call people cowards for not "owning up" to them. <p> You are not only a filthy, worthless piece of murderous, prejudiced shit, you are also a political illiterate and an imbecile when it comes to history. <p> Class dismissed.

  • Sept. 6, 2007, 6:44 p.m. CST

    By the way...

by DocPazuzu far as I can tell, you were never banned as Thunderballs, which means you are indeed hiding.

The only thing even remotely correct about your post is that there is no true difference between leftist and right-wing extremism even if you don't believe in the latter. <p> However, what's fucking hilarious is that you have chosen to define corporatism as leftist, thus making all fascist and right-wing dictatorships in history "left-wing" when an equally simplistic and, by your reasoning, relevant description would be that all dictatorships are "right-wing" since everyone becomes a money-grubber once in power. <p> A real American? Sure, in the same way that Lincoln Rockwell was. You're about as un-American as anyone I've ever seen here - a two-bit, muderderous, bigoted Nazi who's decided to wrap himself in the flag for legitimacy. <p> You are the scum of the Earth.

    Best. Put-Down. Ever. Period.

DocPazuzu: "You're about as un-American as anyone I've ever seen here - a two-bit, murderous, bigoted Nazi who's decided to wrap himself in the flag for legitimacy... You are the scum of the Earth." Just so's I can be as cool as you; Two-bit means twenty cents, right? ;)

  • Sept. 7, 2007, 1:56 p.m. CST

    Well, AnimalStructure/Thunderballs...

by DocPazuzu anyone can plainly see here, I haven't "resorted" to name-calling. I have been calling you names from the very beginning of this exchange. <p> For a big, tough "conservative" you sure do whine a whole lot about being set upon. Much like a little bitch, in fact. <p> As for you being smarter than me, I wouldn't stick to hard to that notion as I am demonstrably more intelligent than you are as well as being you moral superior in every conceivable way. You have yet to present any type of sound argument to back up your assertions, which isn't surprising considering your ludicrously tenuous grasp of politics, culture and history. <p> You should read Robert O. Paxton's "The Anatomy of Fascism". In it he lists nine "mobilising passions" which must be in place for a populist doctrine to be considered fascist. Taking into account all the things you have posted over that last couple of years, you fulfill -- solidly, I might add -- eight of those which makes you, if not a fascist, then most definitely proto-fascist in your political leanings. <p> You adhere to no exceptional moral or political ideals which can be considered uniquely American. For you, America is simply one nation-state among many and no action do you consider too heinous on its part in order to achieve its goals. <p> For the record, I am definitely anti-socialist and anti-terrorist. However, since you consider everyone to the left of Hitler to be a Communist and even Muslim children to be "terrorists", there is no point in me arguing this angle. <p> All these arguments aside, what it comes down to is that you are perfectly willing to intentionally and by your own admission exterminate entire peoples, including men, women and CHILDREN, to further your political ideals, whereas I hold America (and myself) to a much higher standard than that. <p> You are nothing but an evil, filthy, rotten, soulless piece of flyblown shit with no redeeming human qualities whatsoever.

"America is the only country that matters, and as such should do anything it needs to to survive." Now, it's very touching you're a fan of your country but do you have any idea what people who are NOT from your country think when they read a line like that ? "America is the only country that mattters ?" Are you insane, Mr."Real American" ?

  • Sept. 7, 2007, 4:09 p.m. CST

    Actually, AnimalStructure/Thunderballs...

by DocPazuzu's you nobody takes seriously, except maybe vikingkitty and Elvis Cole Lives. Not even anchorite, the most vocal conservative on these boards, would touch you with a ten-foot pole -- much to his credit. <p> When it comes to proving what you've said in the past, I've provided two words and a search engine for those keen enough to read for themselves what you've vomited forth. <p> Hmmm.... I support the deliberate killing of Christians in Kosovo? Really? How so? How does my support for the pounding of Serbia, the most powerful and therefore the most murderous force in the conflict, prove that? If it were up to me, I would have bombed all the warring factions into submission way back in 1992-93 and then put forces on the ground to keep them apart. <p> I equate killing innocent Jews to killing terrorists? Again, how did you reach this conclusion? I DO equate killing innocent Jews to killing innocent Muslims, however. Oh, wait... there are no innocent Muslims, right? Not even American Muslims. Wow, the latter must be a term which literally puts you into apoplexy. <p> When have I denied the concept of leftist corporations? It was introduced to level the playing field to force you to acknowledge the other aspects of fascism which clearly place it firmly within the extremist right-wing, populist sphere. Something, which I might add, you have ignored as usual. You denounce Paxton, one of the country's foremost experts on fascism, as being an "academic liberal" yet the only people who would seriously call fascists "left-wing" are right-wing extremists seeking to shift the term in order to call what THEY advocate "Americanism" or "patriotism". <p> Furthermore, I am singularly unimpressed by your intellect, as it is shallow, base, warped and bent on pure immorality disguised as virtue and the embracing of human nature. Your incessant, girlie whining about being verbally roughed up doesn't really earn any points of respect either. <p> Your lame "leave me alone!" tactic of trying to shame me into doing just that yesterday is no longer your weakest entry in this debate, by the way. It has been surpassed by your apparent belief that calling me "a Muslim" is an insult which would somehow rile me. This is simply another example of why we're in two completely different leagues -- mine being the one of basic decency and human values, and a code of conduct in war which should separate western democracies from political and religious dictatorships, and yours being one of bigotry, hatred, as well as premeditated, large-scale and lethal violence against innocent civilians being acceptable. <p> I also know you're running out of steam because you're making wild accusations which have no grounding in reality, such as how much I may or may not have traveled (I've actually lived for long stretches in other countries) or whether I've actually met a Muslim before or not (plenty, actually). <p> But, as I stated earlier, no matter what I say, your flat earth philosophy won't allow enough nuance for you to grasp or even recognize political subtlties more complex than "He left of me, he hate America!" <p> You're simply as vile as they come, AnimalStructure/Thunderballs. <p> And yes, I will have a side order of freedom fries to go with that, bitch.

    WHOA DOC ...

    by BringingSexyBack

I didn't know this was still ongoing until I saw your post in the V Talkback. Why do you even bother wasting such efforts on Animal? With Bush's approval ratings down in the 20s, Rove out of the White House, and every other Republican senator apparently cruising for cock, his posts just reek of desperation now. His brand of staunch arch-Neo-Conservatism is history. Guys like him, Limbaugh, Hannity and Coulter will be footnotes in the annals of ugly NeoCon history. My position is similar to yours, very much in the Center of things, as it were. As proud as I am of being American, and a true patriot, I am not nationalistic nor jingoistic like Animal. For instance, I favor a blockade of illegal immigration not because I hate Mexicans, but I firmly believe we should reserve jobs, schooling, healthcare and other social services for our own citizens first and foremost. And extend those services to law-abiding, tax-paying legal residents of all stripes. <p>Don't let Animal get to you with his "Left Hates America" tirades. He's actually smearing himself more than his opposition.
