See Deniro, Jason Alexander and Rene Russo pics from ROCKY AND BULLWINKLE here!

Published at:  Apr 07, 1999 12:05:11 PM CDT

Thanks to the many folks that sent in scans of the Rocky and Bullwinkle images. I'm sure everyone will appreciate them! Thanks...

I don't know about you folks... but is it at all disturbing to see human versions of these particular JAY WARD characters? It is for me.

Wow, Jason Alexander as Boris, that takes a few seconds to get used to... If this is done as well as George of the Jungle it could be great, but if not, it'll be painful to sit through. We know they CAN do it well, the only question is, WILL they? Oh yea, I think I'm first too, cool.

ok, so after my initial doubts these look pretty good. One aside, are Jason Alexander's suspenders too damn tight, or what? In both pics he looks slightly...constipated. DeNiro looks badass as ever with that menacing scar, and Renee looks pretty damn good as Natasha.

Everyone I originally e-mailed CAN GO FUCK THEMSELVES!! No way you're getting an apology out of me you misguided fool! Just because I apologized to Myers doesn't mean I'm going to let up on you Liberal Filth for one fucking second. I have about one inch of open-mindedness where my views are concerned and Myers is the only one getting any slack. This doesn't change the fact that Myers and all of you are still in my eyes Liberal Filth. Myers just happens to be most entertaining in my correct opinion.

who's a little upset about this casting of Jason Alexander and Rene Russo? I mean, DeNiro can do no wrong, but JASON ALEXANDER??? What about Bob Hoskins?

And Rene Russo I think is all wrong for Natasha. Natasha is supposed to be, well, a "natasha": dangerous and sexy. I've never thought Russo had a whole hell of charisma anyway, and terrified to think what she'll do to such a great character...

Anybody see that TV movie with Dave Thomas (SCTV) and Sally Kellerman? It was pretty crappy, but of course they had to do without "Moose und Squirrel". I am not inspired by the casting of Alexander and Russo in this version, but maybe they'll surprise me. Anyone know if the animation is gonna' be Roger Rabbit/Space Jam style, or CGI-looking?

So, freakboy "Anti-what-the-fuck-ever", you're the jerk who had to waste my bandwidth with your little rant with Layne... go soak your head in a bucket, understain. You may also take your original email and shove it far, far, far up your ass. PS: we liberals are going to win the day, in the end. It is not natural for the interactive social human condition to move backwards.

As for what we're *supposed* to be talking about: Jason Alexander can only be Duckman for me from now on, so he's ruined for me forever. The chick didn't even register on my meter; who is she, what has she done, and is she funny and sexy? (from what you all are saying, she sounds no good...)DeNiro, well, what can one say? I think he'd be a great Fearless Leader, but what can he not do? I am concerned about the overall quality of this product; what can it do better than the TV shows? Also about the animation/live-action mix; it worked in Roger Rabbit because the world was logically set up to have both kind of creatures in it. Here, I don't klnow if one would be able to sustain the suspension of disbelief thing. But this may be a personal quirk....

Look at the original drawings. They're caricatures. Jesus, don't pass judgment of snapshots taking in natural light of them walking to their trailers. Wait til the coming attractions. Remember those pics of Tommy Lee Jones and Arnold that were taken of them backstage of the Bat films? they looked better onscreen than they did in the Enquirer; I would have done them a little different and darker but that was Shumacher's choice.

Well. I was wondering why Deniro had the forest gump coif going at the Oscars and now my question has been answered. Why the fuck would he agree to do a stupid ass movie like this? I can only see this movie going one way. Down the shitter. I have hated almost every TV to Movie that has been put out in the last ten years and from the look at the casting job on this one I think that I am going to be disappointed yet again. Maybe I am jumping the gun a little with this but I don't see anything spectacular in these posted pictures. Don't get me wrong. I loved Jason Alexander in Seinfeld and thought he was amusing in that shitheap Blankman. I absolutely love DeNiro for whatever that's worth and, I wouldn't kick Rene Russo out of bed. But together in this flick. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm. Looks like they are making up for some lacking components with a little extra star power.

    by smilin'jackruby

Sorry, but Jason Alexander looks fucking stupid. Rene Russo looks fine enough as any life-action Natasha could look and DeNiro looks better than anyone could've hoped for this disaster-waiting-to-happen, but Alexander just looks dumb. Problem is, I genuinely like him as an actor (he's not Nathan Lane, but was an acceptable substitute in "Love, Valor, Compassion") and was happy that someone talented was coming on to play Boris. However, it looks like another "Dunston Checks In" disaster for everyone's favorite cast member from "Merrily We Roll Along." (Yes, the man can sing better than you'd ever imagine after watching his one-trick-pony role on "Seinfeld") BLAH. -Smilin' Jack Ruby

L'Auter, you are flat out wrong. I WILL pay money to see this and I hope that more TV-to-screen films follow. Jay Ward's Rocky and Bullwinkle TV series was VERY funny and I can't wait to see the movie. If it's a fraction as good as George of the Jungle was (another Ward catoon) then this will be an EXCELLENT film! As for TV shows turning into movie I say make more of them! Sure, McCale's Navy, Dragnet, and Car 54 sucked big time but look how many more were EXCELLENT: The Brady Bunch Movie, A Very Brady Sequel, The Fugitive, U.S. Marshals, Maverick, Mission: Impossible, My Favorite Martian, and of course George which I already mentioned. If getting more great films like these means having to suffer through another Beverly Hillbillies then Ill suffer!

Why is Russo wearing a shirt under that red dress. The cartoon character had no shirt. I guess she's too good an "actress" to wear skimpy clothing on film. If they're going to stick Russo in this I want to at least see some cleavage througout the movie ;>)

    Keepin' my fingers crossed . . .

    by the graduate

Normally, I'm wary of any vintage-TV-to-film project, and even more wary of any vintage-cartoon-to-live-action-film project. (I'm dreading the new INSPECTOR GADGET, 'cause that was a staple of my childhood.) But for some reason, I'm really hoping ROCKY AND BULLWINKLE pulls it together. I grew up in the '80s, watching this show on reruns, and I laughed my ass off at its mockery of the Cold War (not to mention classic fairy tales, Aesop's fables, 19th century melodrama, and beat poetry). R&B was a sixties Simpsons: a wry look at the world with as many jokes put in for adults as for kids. I have NO idea what the script for this looks like, but if they can capture that same crazy sense of satire, I think it could happen. De Niro will make a great Fearless Leader, though I have to wonder what accent he will sport (the carton seemed to be a crazy Nazi who migrated to the Stalinist camp). Rene Russo is hot, but not a sex goddess, which is okay because the original Natasha was cute but ultimately unfuckable. She's Boris' flunky, not a Bond girl. And Jason Alexander . . . well, maybe we could have done better, but if he cuts loose and really gets into Boris' crazy schemes . . . I mean, remember that episode where he decided to bring down the U.S. government by collecting cereal boxtops? Ha! Pure genious. Well, here's hoping.

    Russo as Natasha

    by dastinson

I think Russo looks pretty good in that outfit. Its pretty obvious that this was a preliminary test, judging by her footwear. As to the comments about the shirt she's wearing, Natasha was wearing a shirt with her dress for most of the animated series. That was a part of the thrities style that was common to the Rocky & Bullwinkle Show. All three actors are pretty dman good at their craft (I do think they need to work a little on Jason Alexander's look) - Consider that Jason Alexander has been a star on Broadway while raking in the cash on Seinfeld.

well, im trying to become more accepting of others' tastes. Therefore, i wont bash you for liking movies (that i consider pure crap) like BRADY BUNCH, US MARSHALS, GEORGE OF JUNGLE, and MY FAVE MARTIAN. Although how you can say that GEORGE was an "excellent film" many times over (thats what you implied saying that a fraction of its quality would be "excellent") boggles the mind. Anyway, i just was wondering, dont you think that any qualities that these films might have would be better utilized in completely original films? Dont you think that the good parts would be even better if they were in the context of something wholey unique? PS-- 99% of television is filth anyway so if film is taking its ideas from TV, then film is already setting up its limitations because TV can only reach a certain level of quality. Even the best of TV (seinfeld, simpsons, x-files) doesnt even come close to the best of film (pulp fiction, starship troopers, truman show-which makes fun of how stupid tv is). Therefore, if TV is the best field to grow ideas in, then film is going to reap some pretty shitty crops.

    L'Auter, let me clarify...

    by blok narpin

I Think Maverick, The Fugitive and U.S. Marshals are just plain excellent as films. Heck, Tommy Lee Jones even won an acadamy award for Fugitive! As for George and My Favorite Martian, these are by no means "fantastic movies". I would not compare them to films like you mentioned (Pulp Fiction, Truman Show, etc.) But they Were VERY true to thier source material. It was obvious that the people who made the My Favorite Martian and George of the Jungle movies had a genuine love for the respective TV shows because they recaptured thier tone and spirit dead on. I saw those two films and laughed from begining to end. What more can one ask from a comedy film?? They are not great pieces of art by any means but they serve thier purpose and are a joy to watch for anyone who loves the TV shows. As for the Brady Bunch movies, I mean come on! That is just sick twisted fun at it's best! Sticking a 70's family in the 90s gives then a lot to work with. Doing the Brady Bunch over again as they did it in the 70s would NEVER have worked, but PARODYING the show as they chose to DID work, and it was very funny.

Rocky & Bullwinkle: Subtle political humor or gay porn?

    by javacycle

I believe that a full-length Rocky & Bullwinkle film would answer many underlying questions left over from the cartoon, like how our heroes dealt with the fall of the Berlin Wall, the dismemberment of Communism in Russia, and why Rocky and Bullwinkle spent so much time in Turkish bathhouses?

I would disagree with you when you say that movies are better than TV. They are different forms of entertainment, both with their pluses and minuses. TV has the opportunity to create lasting characters who you can relate to week after week (cf. the examples you mentioned, Simpsons and X-Files). When the TV show is good, they can make you laugh and grow with the characters. Movies have the advantages of higher budgets and a larger screen...they can wow us with the sights on the screen...movies are intrisically more "grand" than TV is. Movies also have the advantage/disadvantage of being limited in time. A tv show can go on forever (theoretically), but a movie gets at most 4 hours for the story. For a movie like 2001, you can get a lot out on screen, and the format is perfect...but for some movies, it just doesn't work. I love movies, but I also love TV. If I were to take the whole of the run of the Simpsons, I would equate that about even with Pulp Fiction (probably my favorite movie), but I'd put the run of the X-Files significantly above "Starship Troopers"...tell me what you think. Also, tell me why you liked "Starship Troopers"...I love to hear from you (send it to my e-mail) if you want to talk about it. I love talking about movies and TV...sorry if this went a little too long for some of you. -Loki

    More wisdom from L'Auteur

    by joe buck

Since when did The Truman Show (98's most overrated movie) and Starship Troopers qualify as "the best of film"?! I really liked Starship Troopers and Truman Show was good, but let's not get carried away here. There are MANY far superior films (ie. Rashomon, Taxi Driver).
That said, as bad as most of the TV movies have been, there have been some good ones like Brady Bunch and Addams FAmily. There are plenty of bad original stories as well, and plenty of bad movies based on books. In all of these forms we're really just talking about stories no matter how they are presented originally, they all have an equal chance for suckiness on the silver screen.

    R&B

    by mortimerbrewster

Well, this movie had "Bad Idea" written all over it from the start, but I hope they do pull it off..... However, it seems to me that the best films from TV shows are the ones that are the least like the TV shows. (The Fugitive, Mission:Impossible.... I don't think there were any others that were good. Although that doesn't always work, as in Lost in Space.) After the sheer crap that was films like Mr. Magoo or My Favorite Martian or any of the other Disney live action movies, I don't have much faith in this film. Of course, there is no way this film could live up to the cartoon series (which was, is and will probably continue to be my favorite cartoon series, though I am fond of the Angry Beavers and Rocko's Modern Life), but I imagine I will see this one because my kids will like it. (They have low standards.)
