The Rock tells you about the end of the world! SOUTHLAND TALES clip online!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. This has been a long, long time coming. It's been years... literal years since they first rolled film on this. Now SOUTHLAND TALES has a release date, a new cut, a completed ending and a few clips online.
The first one I was alerted to can be found over at Film-ick. You get The Rock and Buffy having a bizarre conference with Stifler. If you just stumbled across this page, let me translate that out of movie/tv geek for you. You get Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Sarah Michelle Gellar having a bizarre conference with Sean William Scott.
I'm also told that Todd over at Twitch-Film has 2 more clips, but I couldn't get them to run on my computer... partly because I refuse to put Real Media on my system and partly because I'm too lazy to figure it out. Let me know in the talkbacks below what other goodies can be found at Twitch! Enjoy!

It's like a big collective of people I find obnoxious and intolerable. Kevin Smith? Jon Lovitz? Mandy Moore? Justin Timberlake? Even the arguably almost talented people in the mix like Will Sasso and Cheri O Teri aren't selling a damn thing for me. John Laroquette gets respect because he voiced that superb intro to Texas Chainsaw Massacre but other than that the cast is awful. I liked Donnie Darko and all but I'm thinking the poor response at Cannes was probably on the mark.
-
Kelly's a one-hit wonder, and that one "hit" looks worse over time.
-
like a Micheal Bay production.
-
how dare you, man! That is sheer blasphemy. Donnie Darko rules and it's about fucking time we get some Southland goodies. Richard Kelly is the fucking man, end of story. He is to me what Guillermo del Toro or Robert Rodriguez is to Harry, only we're not as good friends, or friends at all really... but he did call me once, I swear! Can't fucking wait for this one and The Box. How someone could direct something as awesome as Darko and then go six years without releasing another film as a director is completely beyond me. Fuckin' studio system, man...

Seriously though, Donnie Darko is pretty amazing, but I get nervous whenever any movie takes this long to get going. This was one of the panels to be at at 2006 Comic-Con. I really hope this is good.
-
Regardless of how High in regards you hold Donnie Darko Dont think this movie will be good based on the the Director
-
Seriously, I liked DONNIE DARKO but this looks pretty crap-tacular.
-
Is the Poor mans Ashton Kutcher So what the hell does that say about him.
-
I'm not sure what your point is? I can't think of a bad movie that Jim Cameron has made.
-
What is this, 1997?
-
'Nuff Said.
-
None of the clips give us anything. I love DDarko and will give this a shot- Just not sure what the hell it is.
-
each of the speaking characters are playing people who are playing people. dwayne is selling a role to stiffler in a very pitched way that many people who are pitching ideas do. he was hamming it up to stiffler, not to the audience in a winking way.
-
I have been waiting for this so long. I can not wait. Donnie Darko was a brilliant movie. Not since Pulp Fiction have I seen a movie that effected me so much. Bring on Southland Tales!!! I am like pumped dudes.
-
for those (like Quint) who don't want anything to do with RealMedia (did they get swallowed up by Microsoft?) you can get yourselves a copy of the KLM codec pack (or the lite version) which contains the RM codec so you can watch/listen/whatever Real content on your standard or (I prefer) Classic Windows Media Player - check it:
http://tinyurl.com/j8uk6
There's also a Quicktime alternative in some versions, though some don't mind downloading iTunes just so they can install the Quicktime player (thanks Apple) -
But I also have no idea what was going on. Context would be nice.
-
No, it's 2007 and the new RealPlayer kicks ass.
-
these came out over a year ago during cannes, come on aicn get it together
-
Poor acting, boring dialog. Just sitting around a room. I hate Real media, so I'm not going to watch the last 2.
-
I thought they were supposed to release the trailer online this week sometime. no doubt that has been delayed as with everything else with this film. I thought the project sounded like a mess, but then i read those graphic novels and now i am just insanely excited. Kelly is the man! And he's a fucking hottie too...
-
He's a no hit wonder. Let's be clear on that.
-
It made no sense and the director admitted as much in the DVD commentary.
-
"and then go six years without releasing another film as a director is completely beyond me". Allow me to enlighten you: Because DONNIE DARKO sucked. That entire film is a mess. Apparently you're in that (mercifully) small group of deluded cinephiles that thinks something is brilliant if it's hard to understand. There are films that people don't understand because of the complexity and then there are films that people don't understand because of incoherence. DONNIE DARKO is the latter.
-
Ha! Funny stuff. I am willing to say that Kelly seems very much a filmmaker of "ideas," and that should be applauded in its own way, but I think that these ideas of his are very often shallow and confused. And I think he lets his ego get in the way. People bitch about Lynch's movies, but I always feel that he's actively exploring his topics and just seeing where they end up as honestly as he can, whereas Kelly just fuckin TELLS you what's up, but muddles the road for no other reason than to make the journey harder. It's hard to criticize a filmmaker like this without sounding like you're calling his fans stupid or gullible, so I hope no one takes it like that. I just don't think he's as interesting as his techniques make it seem.
-
At least wait till you see the film in context instead of trashing it...
-
They said it would be this week. Quit frontin' on us Richard Kelly.
-
Imagine seeing small clips of Donnie Darko and trying to imagine what the movie is about... A killer bunney? Is it a psycho version of Harvey? Smurf sex? WTF, is Patrick Swayze doing in this?Maybe I'm lying, but I don't want to... screw it, I'll watch 'em.
-
it hardly makes it a bad film, or Kelly a bad writer/director...I don't put down organic chemistry just because it baffles me. Donnie Darko is a really interesting film, very unusual, and if you think it makes no sense, I suggest you do as others have suggested and look at the extras on the DVD. they explain it for those of you who are used to Bad Boys-type plots...
-
much more than DDarko. What does that say I wonder? By the way, I respect all of you.
-
Is a great film. Even without all the science fiction, it's a great character study ... and a tightly shot, tongue-in-cheek satire on the 80s. The dialogue is awesome. The soundtrack is awesome. It's always funny to hear the people who dislike a film speak ... rather than say, "I disliked this about it," they start attacking the director and the fans with vague punches. If you don't like it, cool. If you do, awesome.
Chill out. Take some advice from The Dude. -
Anyone buy the comics? How were they?
-
..and "Motorama" was bad, ergo, this is a waste of celluloid.
-
is Brilliant! Cannot wait for this movie.
-
and you can't tell a movie by a crappy media clip. I have no qualms with not agreeing with "critics" that I do not know or have no idea of their opinions on other films, so that whole Cannes situation is irrelevant to me. Especially so since this film's been significantly re-cut.
Greatly anticipating this one, I'll refrain from letting you know once it actually hits the fucking theaters... -
Only the RM clip had sound. The other two, not so much. But man, Buffy saying she liked to get fucked hard was worth the download for me. Yummmmmmm......
-
God damn, I fucking hate it when idiots say if you thought Donnie Darko ate pig shit (count me in), you didn't understand it. I didn't find it hard to follow, I just found it painful to watch. Also, I should probably add that I saw it in its first run, not after all the hype. Fuck this noise of "oh, you're probably a fan of Michael Bay blah blah blah". I respect the work of Matthew Barney, an artist who I can honestly say I don't always understand, EONS before I can stomach all the smug patter from DD. That said, these clips are out of context, and it would be unfair to judge the final product on them. I probably am a bit prejudiced due to his last film (never saw Domino), but the majority of my spite lies in the hands of the dipshit fans.
-
Why did you find it painful to watch, *groundwork*?
I wish when people say they hate a movie, they'd give reasons that have to do with the movie itself. So, what gives? If you hate it, great, but I would like to know why ... help me understand what the criticism is. -
Well Piranha II for starters, come on now, make a bit of an effort ...
(and I know it wasn't his preferred edit but even so, no way I can think of to make it any good - yes I also know as a first time director you often have to take what you can get). -
it was interesting to watch and had some above average writing, but it just wasn't cohesive. I love Lynch, I gave Inland Empire a stellar review over on collider. I just don't think that Darko holds up on repeat viewings. I adored the film in my midteens (back when I hated Lynch with a passion) but as time as gone on, I've found the film more and more contrived. Also, the fact that extras explain the film after the fact does not legitimize the fact that the film makes very little sense on its' own. A film has to stand by itself. Still, I think Kelly, with some discipline, could be a real talent someday.
-
Damn...
-
Seriously BRO, that is the KEY to your movie SUCCESS.
-
I now it was post Donny Darko...
-
wasn't expecting too much of this anymore after all the bad publicity and years of delay but THIS has gotten me interested again
very very Philip K. Dick like (his writing, not the screen adaptations)
which is good
and the acting fits that perfectly -
the extras are not necessary for most people to understand the film. they only exist, no offense, for people who just couldn't follow it the first time.
-
...but I was sent it, hadn't seen it and put it on Sendspace. Now I'm getting knocked left, right and centre for this - primarily by Josh Tyler at CinemaBlend who seems really, really pissed off with film ick.
Sorry if any of you have seen the clip, but this is, at least, the first downloadable version, isn't it?
And thanks to Quint for putting the link up, because people obviously want to see this clip. -
Richard Kelly tried to explain it (he should learn from Lynch and Kubrick). His Director's Cut was significantly worse than the original, which doesn't bode well for Southland Tales considering how long he's been tinkering with it.
-
I just watched the pitch scene...really bad. Dangerously bad. I have been looking forward to this for a while despite what the critics said but that was just awful...
-
Watching these clips is hard for me. Hearing SMG's adorable voice triggers a happy Pavlovian response in me of better times. But god, do these clips suck.No anal, indeed.
-
Why Richard Kelly thought it necessary to create a whole backstory universe where none was needed (I remember seeing it in the theaters and thinking it was perfectly fine) speaks to somebody with a bizarre strain of OCD and who's apparently convinced himself of his infallibility, given the Cannes disaster.
-
anyone know what codec is necessary to get this to play with sound in quicktime on a mac? i don't know and i don't feel like going through every one.
-
I've been looking foward to seeing this just so I can find out what the movie was about. Now, I want to see it so I can find out what the holy fuck that scene was about. We sure this is actualy being released this year?
-
It wasn't terrible and I didn't hate it, but it's hard to see how it lives up to all the hype. DD had several pluses: it was long on atmosphere, it was dark, it had several good performances, it was suitably frustrating of the conventional narrative expectations and and it had a great soundtrack. But, for all that, it wasn't particularly substantial and it certainly isn't as clever as some people think it is (unless you're 15 and think anything with time travel is clever).
-
thanks anyway
-
I liked that clip. A lot. I actually laughed out loud as The Rock was explaining how the Earth is slowing down by "point 0 0 0 0" -- pauses, looks at Buffy -- "0 0 6 percent."
Very funny, in my opinion. I'm now looking forward to this movie. Also, am I the only one who thought Gellar looked really hot with her glasses and silky hair? Maybe that's just the prostitute character she plays, but hey... -
"Last Days Of Man On Earth" aka "The Final Programme." Saw that in a theater that doesn't exist anymore and that was a truly, strange film.
-
Bring on the trailer.
-
DD the theatrical version was miles better than the Directors Cut. The DC for DD was unneeded.
I always find it strange how people seem to bash anyone that really loves this film. I have never once told someone they must hate it cause they don't get it. Nor do I think I have some greater understanding that would make me superior to someone who seemed to not understand it. I never saw DD as a "I get it Movie". Darko spoke to me because it was different and I was tired of seeing the same shit on screen all the time. It had time travel which I love, it was in the 80's which I love, the dialog was very witty and struck a cord with me, it had something to say about prescribed drugs, mental illness, stable families, dysfunctional families, love, sacrifice, great use of music, and it leaves you looking for things and thinking about them on multiple viewings. How often does a Science fiction, romance, comedy, drama, super hero, teen 80's movie come along. My Science Project just did not quite hit the mark. -
Compare the cast for Darko to the cast of Southland Tales...what the hell happened? Usually if you make a decent flick like Darko you can at least get the same caliber cast, but we've gone from Maggie Gyllenhaal to Sarah Michelle Gellar? So strange.
-
I think Kelly was looking for an oddball cast of actors, regardless of whether they were A or B-listers, and decided he liked who he liked. It's true that Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal were in "Donnie Darko," but that was before they were anyone in Hollywood. Mary McDonnell gave an amazing performance as Donnie's supportive mother, so I agree the cast in Kelly's first film was outstanding.
But I'm also interested to see the character chemistry Kelly inspires in "Southland Tales". -
I didn't totally get it the first time I saw it, but it didn't matter - it hit me on an emotional level and that's what counts. The guy somehow manages to travel back in time to save someone's life and perhaps the whole world, even though he sacrifices himself. Worked for me.
-
Yup. When DD came out it spoke to the people who liked it in unique ways. They connected to it. Everyone had their own interpretation of the movie, and then Kelly basically said "No, you're all wrong, THIS is what the movie is actually about." He ruined it with the Director's Cut.

Am I the only one who thought this shit was hilarious?

I like Donnie Darko for what it is (Lynch for kids), but this cast doesn't inspire much hope. Kelly still has to prove himself. One film isn't enough to judge a director on.
-
Numerous opinions about Donnie Darko here and I'm not sure if any of them are correct. Kelly set out to make a rigorously plotted, perfectly coherent, very challenging science fiction story and inadvertently ended up making a more Lynchian flick in which multiple interpretations were valid. Lots of people loved it (a testament to the strength of the original unfulfilled vision), and lots of people hated it, as is often the case with such flicks. He got a chance to make the film he intended and succeeded brilliantly, and it's purest b.s. to claim the film (either version) is "incomprehensible" or “wasn’t substantial” when I or any other number of people could instantly drop 10,000 words on you explaining exactly what is going on and why it's so deep and infinitely cool (especially the philosophical take on the nature of destiny, sacrifice, and free will). And for those who don't like this sort of rigorously plotted coherent sf story and liked the original Lynchian version better, would you please STFU already about Kelly having ruined your favorite movie? Did he come to your house and steal your DVD of the original?
-
version ruined the movie. I just found it to be the weaker of the two version. I own both versions. Actually two copies of the theatrical cut. Why? I have no idea. Maybe I was scared Kelly was going to steal it.
-
This flick feels 5 years old already. Maybe one day my unborn children and I can go see this in the theater. When they're teenagers.
-
Oh please, please do. I'm dying to read your 10,000 essay on why Donnie Darko is so deep.
I'm especially looking forward to the part where you explain its "philosophical take on the nature of destiny, sacrifice, and free will".
Better still, why not show it to your 9th grade English teacher? I hear she likes it when the kids try to analyse the themes and imagery in movies - like what you did when you were reading Moby Dick, except like cool and up-to-date!
You might even get extra class credit!
-
Cause I isn't be laffin!
-
You didn't think that clip was funny, hatespeech? I guess that's cool. It struck me and other people as pretty funny, but I'm sure it's not for everyone.
Even The Rock's exaggerated, bright-toothed smile when he breaks into his schizo explanation? Even Sean William Scott's deadpan "Sounds neat" response to such an insane story? Even The Rock's over-the-top "There's no stopping what can't be stopped!" delivery? i chuckle even now.
Ahem... -
But then again most internet clips do, without the context, when you're sitting at your desk and not already engrossed inside a movie theater. I still have hope for this, but it sounds like Kelly was way too in love with his dialogue here. There's no movement, no action in any of these scenes. Just looks badly composited. Of the actors it looks like Gellar is going to bare the brunt of the embarrassment, if that's how it plays out. Definitely quite curious about the whole thing, though.
-
Moslty because it is MORE OF THE SAME! The director's 1st script made fun of Hollywood. Now that is something the public NEVER gets tired of!
Instead, he decided to make it a "message movie" after the events of 9/11. Not that there is room for 9/11 message movies... Its just he drew up the most cliched script I have seen, since, well the last cliched ridden script I saw. Tell me if you have heard of this before:
- Evil corporation.
- Evil captalist bad guy(s)
- Bad guys are hurting the enviroment.
- Only social outcasts can stop them!
Wow! How original! As a movie viewer I can tell you I am sick of it!
Dr. DOOM was a Eatern European Dictataor and Superman stood for truth, justice and the AMERICAN WAY damnit!
-
FYI.
-
I get so tired of hearing variations of this: "I could easily explain it right now if I wanted to" when defending DONNIE DARKO. Ok, please do. Seriously. And just to be clear, I don't hate the movie at all. I think it's fairly interesting, has some very good performances, and the sequence that's choreographed to Tears for Fears is quite brilliant. But unfortunately, the film is incoherent.
-
I downloaded it, opened it with Windows Media player, but it does not play. The, I try it with DivX player and it works just fine. What gives?
-
I actually never said anything like that, and I wouldn't. you know why? because I CAN'T explain it easily right now...it's a complicated movie. and complicated and multi-layered can be horrendous (Kronenberg's "Crash) as often as it is successful. in Donnie Darko's case, you got a movie that was just beautifully put together. rarely do you walk out of a theater and hear EVERYONE talking about what actually happened, but see none of them upset about it. that's a fine line, and I think Donnie Darko rode it well.honestly, I think the majority of the hate for it comes from people who just have to hate on any indie darling that comes along, so they are somehow cooler than the cool kids. it's like: hating Bad Boys = cool. hating Donnie Darko = WAY cool.I had a guy in film school with me always talking shit about ANY movie that everyone else liked. I finally gave up when I brought in a clip from Lawrence of Arabia for a lesson on mise en scene, and the guy even laid into THAT. I was honestly astonished. LAwrence? really?but anyway, I digress. Donnie Darko, complicated, still good. I could have said it in 2 sentences, but what the hell. I'm bored and I'm pissed the Mariners lost...
-
Is this thing on? Doesn't look like the thread's going anymore, but just for my own petty sense of closure..
First off, I figured my "smug patter" comment would be a pretty succinct criticism on its own. But if that didn't do the trick, the best way to sum it up is that I just don't dig it. I find the dialog and the delivery a little too pompous and self-important for my tastes. Also, I'm not calling it a purely unoriginal film, but I don't find it high-concept at all.
Secondly, you sort of helped illustrate another pet peeve of mine which comes up more and more with die-hard fans of this film. Related to the "you didn't get it" defense is the reasoning that there has to be some validation for why someone didn't like it. I'm not looking to objectively "prove" to people that this thing isn't worth a dead dog's dick any more than I'm asking for them to understand why that's the conclusion I came up with. Hell, I'm sure most of us in this post have at least 10 of the same dvds here or there, this one just didn't click for me. Plain and simple. -
Well, I hate to see so many people ready to bash the new film by Richard Kelly but the truth is is that the clips do stink to high Heaven. But in all honesty I'm willing to see what the movie is going to turn out like because I think tthat at least it will be worth a try. Let's give it credit, it will definately be more of a bearable watch tthan utter schlock like Blade: Trinity and Gigli. But I do agree with people that I think that Kelly could've picked a better lineup of cast members than he did. I just want to watch and wait and see if this movie will really be worth the wait that Kelly is trying to make it look like it might be. I mean his script of Domino wasn't half as bad as the critics tried to make it look like it really was so I'm willing to go into this with no pre-readily made opinions about it.
