The spoilerific bloody and raunchy trailer for Dario Argento's MOTHER OF TEARS has arrived!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. This film is supposed to cap the trilogy began by Dario Argento with SUSPIRIA and INFERNO. I'm one of the few horror fans that thinks SUSPIRIA is overrated. I like the movie, of course. How can anyone not like that final 10 minutes or Goblin's amazing score or the color palate Argento used? I just don't think it's his best work and it is often used by pretentious film snobs as the tip of the top... usually just to sound smarter than whomever they're talking to.
I'd take DEEP RED or TENEBRE or BIRD WITH A CRYSTAL PLUMAGE over SUSPIRIA personally, but that doesn't quell any excitement to see Argento return to form. The acting in the new, long trailer that is online isn't the best, but the tone and atmosphere (what we can gather from it in such a small WMV format) is right. Really curious about this one. I heard a rumor that the U.S. version of this is going to be cut to pieces (no pun intended). But thats ok, I'm still very psyched about it. I'm a fan of just about all of Argento's movies (yeah even TRAUMA and OPERA). And besides, I luuuuv dark and evil shit like this.

The guy hasn't made a decent film in 30 years...I really don't understand how can he be considered a "Maestro" of Horror.

Is the only Argento I've ever seen. Supposedly it's his "masterpiece," which I'll buy if by "masterpiece" you mean "crap." I've watched it all the way through three times, trying to approach it with that mindset every rabid fanboy of his says you need to force yourself to get into it but each time was more painful than the previous. Mother of Tears looks like more of the same, with today's special effects. And in the trailer, even those look less-than-mediocre

Argento is a genius. "Deep Red", "Susperia", "Inferno", "Opera" all first rate in my book.
Granted, most of his films don't make a lick of sense, but I love them even more because of it.
And "Mother of Tears" will put him back on top, where he belongs. -
Im an Argento fan myself but I even agree Susperia is overrated. I think he's had two of the better Masters of Horror entries and his 2001 giallo Sleepless.

I forgot to mention that the art direction for Suspiria is pretty neat, even if sometimes it just gets in the way (Oh, I hope you don't mind that I turn on this GIANT RED LIGHT while we all try to sleep).
And Ken Luxury Yacht, I don't get liking a movie simply because it doesn't make sense. Sounds kind of sheepish to me, but to each his own. -
PELTS was a 59min "holy shit" chant, reguardless of how good or bad it was. And I love Argento for making stuff that way. Think about the end of TENEBRAE. The arm stump spray, the killer being impaled on that whatever-the-fuck-it-was...and Daria Nicolodi's screaming. She almost shattered my picture tube.
You have to keep an open mind about stuff. Don't be afraid to forgive a movie it's faults and love it anyway. -

I've never seen Bird with the Crystal Plummage, but I did enjoy Suspiria. The rest of his stuff however just makes me believe that this guy is just overrated. Look guys don't get me wrong I love me an intimate little horror movie, but sweet merciful crap his stuff is just bogged down with so many problems. I did an Argento marathon not so long ago and whizzed through a couple of his movies, and I've basically decided not to watch any of his stuff for a while. In Suspiria there were lots of things to like, so you accept that movie even with its flaws. Inferno is tolerable. Deep Red and Tenebre are not good and almost laughable, I'd rather watch those with a group of friends just for the fun factor

Maybe I am ignorant of this genre. I don't think so, but I would love to be proven wrong....Guys, I'm asking a favor. Can anybody write me a couple to watch? Good and I do mean good not just parodies or horror homages to horror homages, just plain good horror movies. MAy you disciples of horror cinema jot down some of your favs, so I can jump on your bandwagon?.......BTW, Quint has become my favorite writer on this site. Keep doing your thing dude....once again please if you guys can, write down a couple of recommendations. :)

I've seen a lot of cheesy horror (at least I think I have), and I enjoy its ridiculosity, but I would definitely track down some "good" horror films if a buff could post their must-see list.
And Quint definitely shares more interests with myself than other reviewers I've read - that said, I still enjoy Moriarty's smackdowns. He's like a nun in the Catholic School of film, constantly slapping people with rulers and issuing penance to crap filmmakers. -

The Exorcist, Rosemary's Baby, The Stepford Wives, Hardware, maybe Dust Devil, too. The original TCM, and maybe the comic book second one. Reflection of Fear. Wait Until Dark. The Evil Dead, but if you want real horror as opposed to just a thrill ride, only the first one. Demons. Zombi (2). A lot of the Argento films mentioned in this talkback. Some fun zombie thrills in City of the Living Dead (aka Gates of Hell), Nightmare City, Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things and The Blind Dead movies. And Suddenly Last Summer, with Hepburn, Taylor and Clift, scared me more at ten than any other movie I've ever seen. Oh hey, and the mad doctor of Blood Island movies, though they're terrible. Nah, this isn't even the start of a list.

I've only seen about ten of the movies you listed. A lot of them just sound interesting ... Witchfinder General, for example. But I have to say, that I really disliked Hardware. I though it was funny, but not scary. Maybe that's because of the guy who was doing the voice ...

...Repulsion, for one bloody obvious thing. And Daughters of Darkness, my choice for the best of the 70s lesbian vampire wave. Maybe Miracle Mile, though it's a bit sweet on itself. More as additional neurons fire.

...and there's the rub. Especially in horror, what works for one person, even one fan, will so often punch the bullshit button for another. I really liked Hardware when it came out and still think it deserves a spot on any top...I don't know, list of 250, but a lot of people like Dust Devil (which I also included)from the same folks a LOT more and IT never really worked for me. Still, it's fun to think about the movies, so thank you.

they would start reporting on this for quite a while. Not exactly new, except that this is a US trailer. They got so wrapped up in the Summer crap that news like this got left behind. Certain big Summer films ended up being lame, even by their standards -- now they find the time to report on this stuff....

...recently, though it's an Oliver Reed film from the 60s. These are the Damned. Black Sunday. Some earlier classics like Triffids and Body Snatchers. House of Exorcism, just for the chance to see Telly Savalas as the devil. Antichristo is unpleasant in a way that sometimes works.

for the first time...wow man, teeny quirks here and there but dagnabbit, its just darn good. Damnit man these movies were so simple but so freaking awesome....The Descent gave me some hope. I really enjoyed High Tension even though the ending didn't make a lick of sense, and I did enjoy the new Hills Have Eyes even though its a tough ride. I'm thinking Alexandre Aja is the light at the end of this tunnel.

It's Argento returning to the source of some of the best work he's ever done. It stars Asia. I'm dying to see it. I mean, I put up with The Card Player, okay? I deserve this movie, and I deserve for it to be great. Wow, completely forgot to put the Hellraiser movies on that list. One and two are really pretty good, and three should make you smile.

And there's absolutely no way in hell that Tenebre is better. As much as I loved that film, it was basically an excuse to show a bunch of scenes they didn't use in Deep Red. They might as well have called it Deep Red 2. -
Basically, he's writing off people who think differently from him as pretentious.
Not to mention his argument consists of nothing but, "it's overrated."

If you're in your mid 30's or older, you may remember a very creepy 30 second spot for Suspira that came out in the US in like 78 or whatever.
I fucking LOST MY SHIT when I saw this at like when I was about 9.
On the dvd I have, they have the spot, as well as one other.
Watched it a while back and I still shuddered, but then realized it looked really hokey.
The commercial is just like a black space with this grey haired old woman brushing her hair at a vanity. Atmospheric (goblin?) sounds set you up that's somethings... evil.

Many years later, during my 1 year stay in Austin (and during the dot-com meltdown), I got a hold of the dvd finally. (this copy didn't have the commercial, so I still hadn't seen it for years)
Anyway, I HAD TO WATCH THIS MOVIE, to kind of face an old nemesis.
And I fucking loved it.

This post was about the commercial, and my reaction, and wondering if anyone else remembers...
This was in the NYC metro area around 77-79. Maybe national, I don't know. But for a while their was a low-budget blitz for this movie for I guess maybe the drive-in crowd.
Maybe I'll post what I actually love about the movie in a part 2.

...thank you for including the Killer Shrews. This movie is not scary, but it is one of the ten best bad movies and most quotable movies ever made. And it allows me to add: Frogs. The Children. Day of the Animals. The Dark. God Told Me To. Piranha. Bloody Pit of Horror. The Monolith Monsters. And yeah, the two misses on my first list which showed me to be the most stupid were The Haunting and Curse of the Demon.

If you've read his thoughts, he believed it was utter shit. I don't know if he still thinks that. Probably.
I liked it. Christian Bale was phenomenal, and there were some great scenes. I thought it began to fall apart at the last act, though. The whole "was it real or not" thing was kind of a pointless gimmick. -
The first two acts of this movie are just incredible, and the last act ain't bad. A true forgotten classic. Out of print now, and hard to find. Maybe Ebay. Q, The Winged Serpent. Worth seeing.

...I think I understand what you're getting at. The Killer Shrews, like a couple of the other movies you listed and, I believe anyway, all the movies I listed in response to The Killer Shrews, are movies that are not frightening because of limitations in the budget, the abilities of the creators, even the extent to which the era it was made would allow for the exploration of certain themes. However, I would argue that each and every one of them had elements capable of firing the imagination, of allowing the viewer to create an internal movie which could take the elements presented and weave them into something much more. Frogs, for instance, which no one would argue was a terrifying film, left an elementary school me with a lifelong unease about being in water where I cannot see my feet. True sad story.

Lewton's Cat People. I Walked with a Zombie. Captain Kronos, Vampire Hunter for a movie maybe not so scary but way ahead of its time. Count Yorga. Sorry. Had to do it. Scared me good as a kid. Ditto Gargoyles and the Matheson TV movie The Night Stalker. Oh! And Equinox. Also known as The Beast.

It gives me chills too. And so does the score. And the zombie ballerina who comes out of the closet with a knife. And the voice of the witch. And those weird flying shadows in the courtyard before the blind guy is attacked. And the beginning of the end credits: "YOU HAVE BEEN WATCHING SUSPIRIA" Awesome stuff.

Harry sure does have some ridiculous fuckin' taste in films. You can't knock the drive and influence of the dude, and I'm glad that many times, it's the contributors that write a review. Harry's great for the scoop. I about vomited after reading his infamous Blade 2 review.
That said, I never knew that Harry didn't like American Psycho. That's disappointing, but then again, I guess that's why I never bought Harry's book of reviews. We don't, and probably never will, see eye to eye on 90% of the universe. And hopefully for New Year's next year, someone will think twice before putting a naked picture of the man sliding down a pole. It was up for almost a month, for Chrissakes. Doesn't that adversely affect ad revenue? -
What happened to the much-hyped journey to 1983 or whatever the Hell it was? I read two looks back, I think, and then nothing. Come on, now. Stop smoking the hashish and write. If Harry pays for these contributions, they should come out with some sort of frequency.

are these "good" horror movies or so "bad they're good" horror movies....I would say I'm kind of a squirms man as well, Soylent....IF we keep listing movies which i'm ever so greatful you people are. Can we seperate the ones that actually take themselves seriously haha. I might start watching one with certain expectations and totally ruin the experience, that's why i'm saying.

There hasn't been ONE mention of The Shining. NOT ONE. That's horror 101 folks....
I'm also disappointed that no one's mentioned Audition. -
The Shining is up there around the pinnacle of horror, and everyone knows it, I would hope.
Oh, and I have actually seen Audition. I thought it was pretty damn great. That jumpin' bag totally reminds me of the bags in Resident Evil 4. I bet it was an influence. -
Yeah, Grungies, missed The Shining. Our collective bad, but when you put together a list like this on the spot you're going to miss some. Soylent, good to see some love for Dead Birds, which was just a tiny gem of a horror movie. And Funny Games is just a wrenching experience of a movie. I loved the first two acts of Session 9 but I thought it collapsed a bit at the end. T 1000...my first list and most of the others are for real, but the one that includes Frogs and the one that includes Yorga are horror films of a different...mmmm...type. Although I still consider them worth seeing.

Suspiria has enough abstract elements to truly be considered a work of art. Few films ever acheive that. Im really not trying to sound cerebral. That flick is hypnotizing. I will say that the ending of Tenebre is probably stronger than Suspiria but has far as Argento endings go Phenomena takes the cake! What bad acting in the trailer? Looks very atmospheric and anything with Asia is a plus...except for XXX. if you havent seen her directorial debut Scarlet Diva its worth checkin out. You can reconcile the pervert and the cinephile within!

WHY I LOVE LOVE LOVE SUSPIRIA
Well, I love the fucking set design, for starters. This unbelievably gaudy 70s reflective multi-colored wallpaper everywhere (reminds me of people's houses back then, but with lots more evil). The first big bloody mess where the giant glass chandelier eviscerates the poor blondy girl into a pool of blood on the b/w op-art floor.
(I heard that argento used up like the last of the technicolor stock in europe at the time to make this. maybe a bogus factoid however. But you know, the intense reds and oranges and stuff, at times, in Suspiria do remind me of some of the set decoration for the Shining. Like when Jack is interviewing for the job. Bright oddly scary orange room with that very subtle evil-ambient sound...)
There are so many things, alternatingly clumsily cheesy and super creepy...
I love the chase of the girl, from the unseen guy with a blade wearing, what appears to be a fucking dracula cape (don't know why),
She escapes into that courtyard and there's this super well done and tense scene where she's stacking boxes to reach a small high window and he's slowly picking the lock.
Then she finally get's up and through the window and BAM she's fallen into a pit of FUCKING BARBED WIRE! Freaking out and slicing herself up.
And I'm not even into gore (sorry to admit here).
ONLY LATER does she return as the zombie in the closet with the knife to kill the protagonist (Jessica?).
They promoted the last few minutes, and yeah, the last 10-15 minutes do pretty much pay off.
The fucking Glass Peacock. That whole scene at the end with the witch is straight out of my nightmares.
There's so much like gypsy-voodoo symbolism in this movie, and despite the occasional clumsiness, I guess I JUST BUY INTO THE MYTHOLOGY. -
I wouldn't trade just the opening sequence in Suspiria for all of Tenebrae, and I rather like Tenebrae.

...short shrift to giallos in general. I'm not an enormous fan myself because to me they tend toward being a little too formulaic, but Argento did a good one recently called Sleepless. Uhm...Never Torture a Duckling, Death Smiles on a Murderer, Black Belly of the Tarantula, The Red Queen Kills Seven Times, Death Laid an Egg. A bunch from Argento from back in the day. Anybody else?

...stylistically I guess you could say the first Silent Hill has similarities to Argento's work. But you could just as easily draw comparisons between the game and the first Phantasm. Or Carnival of Souls. So I don't know how much stock I'd put in it.

Deep Red, Tenebrae or Bird over Suspiria? What about Inferno which is miles ahead of any of them and is all wonderfully Bava-ized? And actually, and this is just my experience, people who trash Suspiria (or undercut it, whatever) are the ones who are trying to sound smarter than they are. The ones who go against that narrow grain for the sake of it. Of course, Quint didn't say he preferred Four Flies on Gray Velvet or something more obscure so that's a plus. He obviously digs on the gialli more than fantastic, but for me there's always been something much more special in Suspiria - Argento's full tilt Snow White remake - than his slasher movies.

plays more like a Fulci film for me. I think Moriarty really nailed that one in his review last year, search that out. But it's got a lot in common stylistically and thematically with The Beyond and City of the Living Dead and plotwise is basically a total rehash of Bava's KILL BABY KILL.

was very cool. Crappy quality, but from what I can make it out it looks like a return to form from Argento. Doesn't seem like it will fit seamlessly wit the other two on a visual level, but the trailer alone is Argento's best looking work in years. I'm excited this film exists. And was that Daria Nicolodi in there? She looks like she hasn't aged a day from what I can make out. Must be all her white witch magic ...

...I think he might be having the fan reaction to having to listen to people who have probably never seen an Argento movie OTHER than Suspiria, perhaps never seen any other Euro-horror of that era at all, pose as experts based on having seen it. And I've run into those people, too. And you want to grab them by their throats and scream "What do you know, anyway? Have you ever sat through Black Demons and The Etruscan Kills Again back to back? Have you ever even heard of Demons 3: The Ogre, much less endured it, dying a little more inside with each passing frame?" It's like having someone who saw Night of the Hunter once on the late show tell you all about noir. Okay. Better now.

Here's a list of some of my favorite horror movies that I don't think get enough play and might be useful for someone looking for something new, although they're all fairly well known: Lips of Blood, The Grapes of Death (basically everything by Jean Rollin) Black Sunday, Black Sabbath (and basically anything by Bava), Lemora: A Child's Tale of the Supernatural, Inferno, The Dr. Phibes movies, Romero's Martin, The Beyond, Cemetery Man, The Fearless Vampire Killers, The Tenant, Witchfinder General, Valerie and her Week of Wonders, Dust Devil, The Serpent and the Rainbow, Images (a Robert Altman 70s horror movie - picture that) Private Parts (Paul Bartel), the Phantasm sequels (better than the oft compared Evil Dead series IMO), Night of the Creeps, Kiss of the Vampire (Hammer), Dracula Has Risen From the Grave, Brain Damage, Frankenhooker, Fright Night, Angel Heart, Twin Peaks FWWM, The Addiction, The Sect, Paul Schrader's Cat People remake, Paul Schrader's The Comfort of Strangers (like Hostel for intelligent grown ups and the creepiest Christopher Walken performance ever), Spider Baby, any of the Amicus anthology movies, Street Trash, This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse, and probably my favorite horror film ever produced by man or god and in this case man-god Alejandro Jodorowsky -- SANTA SANGRE!!!

...counts as far as I'm concerned and I feel dumb for not listing it already. Oh, and HK...like The Car, I don't think Phatasm II is currently available on DVD for region 1. Since it's probably the worst of the series maybe that isn't such a big deal.

THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE moved my more than it scared me, but it did have some creepy scenes and excellent atmosphere.
SILENT HILL doesn't remind me of Argento's stuff when it comes to the look, although the extremely dynamic camera work and narrative weirdness could be similar in some ways, I guess. Fulci comparisons are apt, as well, although SILENT HILL for the most part lacks gore, barring one or two scenes. It definitely does have some Barker-like traits, with the creepy perverted janitor spreading syphillis across the wall and flicking his tongue around. So fucking gross and awesome, I'm glad to see that movie getting some love. So many people rip on it, it's refreshing to see people who could look past the flaws and see that the things it did right are pretty phenomenal. Pulling off Pyramid Head so well was quite a task in itself, I expected him to look a bit silly on the big screen, but damned if he wasn't one of the most visually imposing and frightening movie monsters I've seen in ages. -
Santa Sangre and Phantasm II are available on Region 2, and I really dug Phantasm II for what it was although I thought III was better. I was able to actually tape (tape!) Night of the Creeps from the Encore Mystery (mystery?) channel a couple years back. And I put Witchfinder General on there because it is coming out on the 11th -- along with From Beyond, and a Tales from the Crypt/Vault of Horror MGM midnite movie double feature release.

Cronos from the great G. Del Toro, it's not scary but really fabulous and authentic nonetheless, not to be missed for Horror fans with a bit of taste. Hail Guillermo.
Kathryn Bigelow's terrific vampire cult classic Near Dark, The Others of course, and let's not forget Exorcist III, my favourite of the Exorcist movies, that has some of the most atmospheric and creepy scenes you will ever see in anything horror. Let's see if I can come up with some others. Oh yeah, Jacob's Ladder of course, don't know if anyone mentioned that !!! -

Hktelemacher, The Addiction is out on region 2 in Holland. The bad news it's a pan and scan version (but the quality is good), the good news is you can buy it for 2 euros.
And yeah, Oceanic86, I fully agree about everything you said about Silent Hill. In general I'm not a big fan of horror-series, but I would love to see a sequel for Silent Hill with Gans directing again and the full involvement of Carol Spier, gee, did that movie have wonderful set-design or what.

Don't know why anyone should hate Silent just because you're not a fan of Argento's movies (can you really compare one movie to a directors complete body of work ?).
For me Argento's movies are anywhere between "bleh" and excellent.
Anyway, Silent Hill reminded me a lot of the great Fulci's (The Beyond and City of the Living Dead). Had Fulci(r.i.p.) been given 15 or 20 million dollars to make a film, that really could have turned into something very similar as Silent Hill.

is one of my very favorite old movies. I'm glad to see someone else enjoyed it. Althought scary it's not a horror movie. A good horror movie I don't hear talked about that much is The Sentinel (1977). That creeped me out a bit.

Hey, the childhood film memories are always special.
I think Scream was good until the last 15 minutes, that was a major cop-out(a very typical Craven thing). Nothing worse as a good movie that goes down in flames at the end. Oh yeah, I don't think we mentioned Carrie, another timeless uber-classic and I would also like to mention The Demon Seed, just re-watched my DVD of that a few weeks back, I think that's a great film.

Good ones SoylentMean, I still haven't seen Deranged 'till this day by the way, I almost bought the MGM double disc until I read the MGM version of Deranged was heavily cut (a few minutes I think).
There's a german SE for it out there but that's kinda pricey I think.

Yes, Buio Omega is a twisted and sick little film, I prefer Anthrophophagus from D'Amato myself. But none of these Euro cult classics will ever Le Notti del Terrore a.k.a Burial Ground of course.

Hellraiser, Silent Hill, The Shining, Carrie, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), Suspiria, and a special shout-out to Burnt Offerings (1976), which starred Oliver Reed, Karen Black, Bette Davis and the scariest fucking chauffeur you will EVER see. (All the actor, Anthony James, had to do in the role was smile. That was it. And I swear, it was the smile of every child's boogeyman, every vision of Death, every cadaver come to life. Funny thing is, you can see him in movies today as well, and he ain't scary at all (I remember he was the bartender "Skinny" in Eastwood's Unforgiven). But I defy ANYBODY to watch that movie without feeling as if they've slipped into a nightmare!

Horror movies don't need to be completely cheesy and nonsensical. Argento's movies are masterfully atmospheric, but think about THE EXORCIST and THE SHINING. Movies that tell great stories with great characters and don't just exist to gross you out. The Exorcist is not only the single greatest horror movie, but one of the greatest OVERALL movies ever made.

His new films look as old and foosty as his old ones? lol!Not that I'm complaining, this looks well creepy and The guys that did the Saw movies and Eli Roth should take note from the master!Shit acting, plot all over the place, cheap, practical rubbery effect + direction by Dario Argento = Scary horror film with tons of atmosphere.

Dario Argento, I mean. Asia Argento... well, she rules. Did anyone else think SCARLET DIVA was a seriously good flick? I know there was all the SHOKKKING nudity and whatnot, but beyond that I thought it was a well-directed self-critical examination of stardom. Reminded me of a Euro-sleaze Todd Solondz... or am I totally on crack?
For my money, Fulci at his best-- DON'T TORTURE A DUCKLING, THE BEYOND-- and even FOUR OF THE APOCALYPSE, his Western... is more effective, more original, more brutal and more interesting than Dario Argento.
And yeah Burial Ground is superb, the uncut DVD will change your life. He's not a horror director, but is anyone else here a fan of TINTO BRASS? Let me tell you, my ex-girlfriend loooooooved Tinto Brass flicks. There's a lot to be said for fun, good-spirited and super-dirty porno that both genders can equally enjoy. -

From the description in the article, I was worried this was going to be a Argento-Lite™ modern movie with that totally un-frightening 'studio' look that all movies seem to have nowadays, but lo and behold, it actually looks as cheap (and therefore more disturbing & nasty) as his old classics. I love this kind of look and I love the fact that some filmmakers still have the balls to completely buck the bland trends of modern cinematic fashion.

i think the reason Suspiria gets so much discussion time/love is that it's Argento's most 'Argento'y movie, distills him to his essence or whatever. but quint you sound kinda pretentious yourself, following up a diss to people who say they like Suspiria with a list of three lesser-known argentos as your fav's; it's a holiday man, time to chillax not attax.

I'm pretty sure hktelemacher is right: SUSPIRIA is a "full tilt SNOW WHITE remake". Apparently there are tons of twisted little clues all over the movie. One I know for sure is the pool of blood at the beginning of the movie: the pool under the hung girl is abstractly shaped like a witch on a broomstick. Argento intended that, and lots of other subliminal stuff. And I believe all the reds and blues in the original film negative were painted over with watercolor, by hand, by Argento and the cinematographer. That could just be a rumor. Cool rumor though.

I saw this months ago for the first time. I love zombie movies, and I love bad movies, but this was just lame. I couldn't find anything redeeming about it. And the "notorious" ending was not even close to being worthy of its notoriety. A shame too, because I'm always looking for lost gems in the zombie genre. BURIAL GROUND ain't it, people!
