AICN Games and Picturehouse want to give you a Wii... autographed by Steve Wiebe!!!

Published at:  Aug 31, 2007 6:10:59 PM CDT

Greetings humans, Monki here with the absolute coolest give away I've ever been involved with here on Ain't It Cool all courtesy of Picturehouse and the awesome film "The King of Kong."

Today I'm proud to announce that AICN Games will be giving away a Nintendo Wii to one lucky winner. That's right... the Wii. You STILL can't find this bastard in stores anywhere. This console has surpassed the XBox 360 as the #1 worldwide seller, even with a year handicap. How freakin' amazing is that? Not only that, but the console (and box) have been signed by hero of the year, Mr. Steve Wiebe! That's right, an autographed Wii by a famous person! A really really nice famous person at that!

So, you may ask yourself, what do I have to do to get my hands on my own Wii? What would I do with my Wii if I had plenty of time to play with it? Could others play with my Wii and not ruin it for myself? In group situations, is it okay to pull out my Wii to impress everyone?

I can't answer all of those, but I can answer the first. To get your hands on your own shiny Nintendo Wii, you must submit a video to:

aicn.monki@gmail.com

In the spirit of "The King of Kong" this video must be of your greatest personal achievement in video gaming history, and no longer than 2 minutes. You can either mail me the video or send me a YouTube link of your video, but it must say "AICN Games Wii Submission" in the subject line of your email and if you choose to place your video on YouTube, "AICN Games Wii Submission" must appear in the description of the video.

Please keep your mailed entries under 10 megs if at all possible. (Try the H.264 codec in Quicktime...so so good...)

I've left it pretty open for interpretation...your best achievement in gaming history...did you beat all of Street Fighter 2 without getting hit? Successfully beat Legend of Zelda in one sitting? Teach your three year old how to play Guitar Hero?

I want to see all kinds of entries on this one. Live action, animation, machinima, experimental...you name it. You've got two minutes to impress me enough to send a Nintendo Wii your way.

You've got until Friday, September 28th at 9pm CST (Cool Standard Time) to submit your entry to my email. Also, the winner is declared on my sole discretion, so if you want to bitch at someone (imagine that), you'd be looking for me. Oh, and the winner has to be an American...sorry everyone across the pond. Of course, if you want to send in an entry just to try to get some of your work in an upcoming post, feel free to, but you aren't eligible for the Wii. If you have any questions, send them my way, and I'll get you an answer.

So get to it you video monkeys! I want to see some badass work from all of you! Best of luck and until next time, back up the tree I go!

-Monki

You're the outlier. Some areas may have them regularly in stock, but most places still report them selling out the day they arrive. Hell, some store still have lines forming before the doors open.

I am actually a pretty avid toy collector and notice every morning when I try and beat the other collectors that there is usually a pretty long line at Toys R Us here in Phx. And I ask what they are waiting for and its ALWAYS the Wii...

    I hate my Wii.

    by eggbeater

It's %100 my fault too. I thought "Hey it's only $250" and "Hey it's got a cool remote" and "Hey it's small and sleek". I was wrong. There just aren't enough games out for it. Metroid just came out, but other than that, there is nothing. All of the ported games just suck. I know everyone is gonna disagree with me and that's fine. The Wii just isn't my cup of tea. "A" for effort though

    What's the matter, eggbeater?

    by rsanta74

Is your Wii too small? ;-)

Seriously though, I love my Wii system. Helluva lot of fun to play. It's not about the quantity of the games to me. I'm more concerned with getting something that's going to give me a new experience.Wii does just that.

I've got about 10 or 12 games for it. Not a stinker in the bunch.

As far as being sold out goes.... Even living in a well stocked city generally doesn't help. I'm in NYC. According to the people at he Nintendo World Store, they get about 100 of them every day or every other day. They STILL sell out as soon as they get them. No joke.

I went a 6am. There were 150 people on line. I was #65 (more or less) 50 people went home pretty pissed. Happens all of the time from what I hear.

Trackers don't work. As soon as you get notified, you've basically got minutes to whip out that credit card or it's sold out. The best bet is to find a store, talk to the manager, find out when they're getting their next shipment, and get there early.

Don't sell the Wii short. Valve's Gabe Newell has seeing the Wii numbers openly admitted to an oversight in their strategy. Could be a great thing for those Half Life lovers. Plus, with the strong possibility that Spore will make its way to both Nintendo systems (DS the other), the future looks very bright for the Wii.

I'm dying to get my hands on Wii exclusives like Mario Galaxy, Soul Calibre Legends, and even My Sims.

I understand that the Wii experience may not be for everybody, but it beats getting the same basic experience on both the 360 AND the PS3. I'd sooner get a 360 as my 2nd console instead of the Sony clunker, which still doesn't have a whole lot of bonafide killer apps yet.

    by daddylonghead

This thing of people over 17 playing video games is one of the many depressing developments of the late 20th/early 21st century. Not like I expect anybody to listen or care, but still. Why ACTUALLY start a band, making music you care about and wrote yourself, working with other band members, playing in front of an audience? MUCH better to stare at your television while you press the buttons the TV tells you to on a PLASTIC TOY GUITAR... whatever, fuck america. I'll just sit here and listen to DJ Screw and hate everyone.

    "Wii would like to play"

    by leopold scotch

I completely agree with many of the points here. After twenty years of supporting Nintendo because they always made the best games (despite stupid marketing decisions), all they give you is this vague promise that they haven't forgotten the fans who put them where they are. Seriously, in terms of both imminent releases and games on the distant horizon there are about four Wii games I actually want (granted, they'll probably be up with the best games from competing systems, but that's always been the case with Nintendo). For the 360, there are around twice that many which come out before Christmas and just as many scheduled for next year. The only point I would contest is this idiotic "adult" gamer bullshit. Please don't try to argue that the likes of Gears of War, great though it is, appeals to proper adults (especially given the abundance of kids who infest the online community). The only truly great adult game I can think of (except sports titles which have a kind of neutrality) is Bioshock, since it has given gaming a degree of dignity. No, the problem with the Wii is its focus on attracting newbies, and if I was making big money from doing so, I would do the same. The question arises, though: will Nintendo ever try to reconcile the two opposing camps with new games which try to make non-gamers into (cough) "hardcore" gamers? I don't know if they have that motivation any more, but I hope there's some kind of backlash against the amount of shit being put out. The other problem is that the success, and the creative effort the system requires has exposed developers as being complacent and closed-minded: if they put out a shit game, it'll probably sell as well as a game which requires effort. In addition, only first party studios have so far managed to come up with anything that actually takes advantage of the many possibilities the system offers. I suppose the Wii has really just reinforced a lot of the things I dislike about the gaming industry. Why is it always my least favourite system that wins every generation (well, after the days of the SNES anyway)?

Yeah, it's been a little weak on the games, but all consoles seem to go through that for the first year. Third parties rushed crap ports out because they were caught off-guard by the huge turnaround for Nintendo. There's a lot of awesome games coming out between now and Christmas.

Pretty sure that there's never been a better time to BE a gamer (be it a 'casual' or 'hardcore' one). Three competing systems with fabulous software on each are available to us (four if we count the gaming PC community too). Each machine has strengths and weaknesses. If you don't wish to use the remote and leap around, then choose the system that suits your play-style. I personally have no intention of ever owning a Wii but that doesn't mean that the hardware or the manufacturer is at fault.

By the way, I personally enjoyed 'Gears of War' and would consider myself a 'proper adult' (whatever that means), Leopold.

    Got a Wii already...

    by johnno

I was going to wait till i could just waltz into a store and pick one up, but my sis wanted one badly and went out of town to track one down and called me asking if I would split for one, so I saved time and money and got one. Wii sports is always social fun. Wii play is only worth it for the extra remote. Mario Party 8 sucks ass. Raving Rabbids is pretty fun for a rental. And I'll look to pick up the big guns of Twilight princess, Mario Galaxy, Smash Bros this winter. But currently my favourite game on the Wii right now is Resident Evil ReMake from teh Gamecube... That's right I'm buying the ol' Gamecube titles I missed out on. It's impossible as fuck to find a cheap GC controller. Had to settle for a crummy third party one but it was cheap and works for the most part. Just doesn't have that nice springy feeling of the official controller... and the rumble's kinda weak. And least me forgets, I'm gonna add Res Evil 4 Wii edition to that list. Umbrella chronicles? Maybe... And when is No More Heroes coming out?And if the DS is any indicator for games, DS is biting it over DS game releases. There's one, count it one, Zelda Phantom Hourglass. The reast are all casual motherfuckers. I don't want to play word games! I don't want to raise racehorses! What the fuck??? For me the biggest winner by the end of this year will be the PSP. Was planning to get a PS3 this Christmas but I've found myself in an unintended financial situation... So hopefully summer and I can avoid having idiots spoil MGS4 for me until then...

    Hey smylexx

    by leopold scotch

I love Gears of War, especially when I get to play online with friends, but the reason for my enjoyment has nothing to do with it being an adult game, which is the point I was trying to make, because if you ask a gamer what he/she wants froma good game, the one who says "blood, guts, explosions and swear words" is more likely to be the fourteen-year-old than the twenty four-year-old. That was a long sentence. At the same time, few gamers - adults and children alike - will say they want "colourful worlds and smiley faces" but the people who know what makes a good game will be less turned off by that type of game, regardless of whether or not it makes them look "kiddy". I'm looking forward to Mario Galaxy because of the gameplay, but I couldn't care less about Animal Crossing, and if it looked more like Command and Conquer, my preferences would remain. There's a coherent argument in there somewhere but I'm too lazy to clarify it.

I respectfully disagree with your breakdown of the DS. Only one game? You must be high. Metroid is great with sweet-assed multiplayer, Mario 64 is even better than the original, Brain Age for those cerebral gamers who need some reason OTHER than fun, Nintendogs is sweet, Brothers In Arms Ds is short but REALLY GREAT, Starfox is deep and fun, Animal Crossing Wild World is a great noodler and lest I forget the single greatest handheld game ever created Mario Cart DS. DUDE, I sat with my boys at McDonalds eating a $1.00 double cheesburger and watched one race a couple of Japanese racers from clear across the globe absolutely free.

I watch everyone I know who has a PSP and actually tries to play the lousy ports on it bust it out, noodle for 2 minutes, put it away out of boredom or sucky controls. Seems to be it's one big expensive mp3/mpeg portable porn machine, because the games are all ASS.
It's a sweet piece of hardware that is totally unfulfilled in the software department. Typical Sony, an overpriced 'do everything' marvel that does nothing that people actually want it FOR: play great games. If having the kitchen sink in your handheld was so important why is te Gameboy the most successful platform of all time? games buddy, well-designed, well-executed games. The Wii succeeds in exactly the same way, makes ALL KINDS of people want to play, what person casually interested in games is gonna spend that kinda scratch on a PS3? What a joke!

I'm talking about NEW GAMES coming out! You're reiterating old games been out since launch and I'd agree with msot of your list and some I already have. Let's see new DS games to look FORWARD TO on DS: Zelda... possibly FFIV... Possibly Crystal Chronicles... That's it! I didn't really read anything else you typed after that since you veered off in the wrong direction to begin with, but compare THAT with the PSP's lineup till the end of the year and I fucking fear that if DS is any indication then once the Wii blows it's load this Christmas what precisely is there to look forward to? But I'm all open for Nintendo to surprise me at TGS... oh wait... I don't tihnk they ever show up at that show unless recent rumors that they are going to have a big presence are true...

Fuck Link, I want a Zelda game, dammit

    by doc_strange

The advertising, hell even the packaging say Legend of Zelda and yet Zelda is always in the background or getting kidnapped. I don't want to play as Link anymore, quite frankly one must ask why the games aren't called the Legend of Link as the guy is always the one doing the hard shit.

Metroid looks outdated to me. No I'm not talking about the graphics, I'm talking about Samus' armor. It looks really stupid now. It might have looked cool back in the 80's but it looks outdated and superfluous. I think they should really give some thought into a redesign or a complete overhaul.

With Mario I can say the adventures have been great but one can only go into so many pipes and jump on so many turtles until it gets old. Plus that prick Mario is always featured and Luigi takes a step back into supporting roles or even shittier games. When's he gonna take the spotlight in a true Mario game?

    re: No games on Wii

    by quamb

You guys seem to forget this is Wii's first year. I know it's no excuse - but ALL consoles go through this in their first year. Think of the 360 last year having absolutely NO games except for Gears. Think of PS3 right now with NO killer games. Same goes for Wii, except, well, Wii does have a handful of good games out in it's first year.

Reality is, people are always going to bitch, moan and argue about consoles. No matter what is on the market.

Also - PS2 had about 98% crap games as it was no.1. Same goes for Gameboy as it was no.1 And so will be the way for Wii. Deal with it.

Other than that, fuck off.

Technically I'm not complaining about the Wii...

    by johnno

I'm complaining about the DS which has been out for a good while. And since DS is basically the Wii prototype I tihnk it's fair to compare it's future and wonder if that holds true for the Wii as well. I'm not saying stop casual games. I got my mom and family hooked onto the Wii. They love it! And I love what Nintendo has done... But if they only start focusing on the casual audience, then they're gonna lose hardcore gamers. And that sucks... hell over the disappointing sales of Twiloght Princess they even figured that nobody wanted epic games anymore. Even some third parties are thinking that... Ummm, no... it's because the real hardcore gamers can't get ahold of the damn console to even play Twilight Princess which kicks ass! Nintendo needs and can please both sets of audiences... however their E3 showing doesn't exactly instill any confidence... but well we'll see... Until then, true hardcore gaming is on the 360 and PS3.

    Twilight Princess was a smash

    by enrique_o_k2000

The thing sold millions worldwide and was the best-selling Zelda since Ocarina of Time. Nothing disapointing about it. As for 'hardcore' gaming, it's about time that videogame nerds realized they were never the center of the gaming world even though Microsoft tried to make them think so (hint: which is why MS has never been the console market leader) and then Sony stupidly tried to follow MS's example. As someone who grew tired of FPSs, GTAs, 'epic' games and a western-style, PC-inspired motif last gen, I can only laugh as their 'hardcore' bubble pops before their eyes.

    Wii hopes

    by leopold scotch

My hope is that the absence of tons of great games is indeed down to the fact that it's the first year for the system, but if this is the case, then they should make more hints about what's coming next year, because a big backlash will exist if too many people can't see past the two remaining big games, which are only a couple of months away. My main complaint is that this campaign for new gamers is using up too many resources from what I see is the best developer in the world, and after Smash Bros, which I don't care much for anyway, the only one they are openly working on is Mario Kart. It seems like a waste of my favourite developer, and I hope they're just doing what they always do, holding their cards close to their chest, but after so many opprtunities to make megaton announcements, I think that Wii Fit really is their main project for 2008. If it really makes you fit, then I'd consider buying it, but not for great Nintendo gameplay, and that's just a shame for all the people who know what a great Nintendo game is.

    by johnno

    http://tinyurl.com/38sfj5
http://tinyurl.com/2cnxxh It's not that hardcore gamers can't appreciate some casual titles or want some kind of cease and desist against casual games... but we want our epic games, third person stealth FPS RPG RTS stuff too! And Nintendo gives the impression that they're veering into a particular direction completely opposed to it, which is really a shame if no appealing games come out to faithful gamers who looked forward to the revolutionary Wii controls and what it could do for gaming... But I guess if you now prefer petting Nintendogs and raising horses and crossword puzzles and the Olsen twins, hey good for you...

    Mixed Zelda accounts

    by leopold scotch

It's not unexpected to have conflicting accounts about how well Twilight Princess sold because it depends on which region you look at. Zelda consitently sells very well in the US, while in Japan, it's surprising how lukewarm the sales usually are (in comparison with other Nintendo franchises). This is why Miyamoto says that sales weren't as good as he had hoped, but Zelda still sold over a million copies in the US alone in the Wii's first couple of months. The weird thing is that, despite most strategic decisions originating from Nintendo of Japan, the DS and Wii, along with most big Wii games, are released in the US first. Hopefully that means games like Zelda will still be a priority, because the likes of Majora's Mask and even Ocarina of Time weren't huge record breakers in Japan either.

    I think there's a misconception

    by malificus

regarding Nintendo and this whole Wii popularity thing. Look at Nintendo as the last gen was winding down and as the 360 wasgetting ready to be released. Everyone was talking about how it was all Sony and microsoft's game and how Nintendo should completely give up trying to compete in the console market and just develop software for the 'winners'. Then Nintendo gives people a gander at the Wii remote and people go apeshit about how Nintendo has lost their freaking mind and all of that then look what happened.
I don't believe Nintendo ever intended to explode the casual/first time gamer market with the Wii, I just think they simply marched to the tune of their own drummer and the widespread appeal just sort of materialised as a result. Nintendo has always done what they damn-well pleased and for the previous two generations they paid dearly for it in market share and criticism.I am gratified to see Nintendo doing so well after the shelacking Sony (who I've always perceived as a very snarky/low class company) gave it for so long. I really love my DS but I am in no hurry whatsoever to get a Wii. I got a PS2 for my boys last Christmas, though it pained me to give them my money, simply for the vast and incredible library it opened up and never even bothered or cared about trying to score the Wii.
And Johnno, I do see what you mean about the near future releases being a thin but the system has legs and there's plenty of stuff already on the racks, more than I have money to spend on.

I purchased a Wii a few months ago and I've been very happy with it so far. There were really four factors that influenced my decision. First was price, because unfortunately I don't have tons of cash laying around after the bills are paid. Second was the controller - I upgraded to a DS and liked how they incorporated the touch screen, so I was curious to see what they'd do with the Wii remote. I've also been a Zelda fan since the gold cartridge NES days, so I was eager to play Twilight Princess. The last reason is going to sound dumb to most of you, but I also liked the social aspect of it. It's four player, plus it's easy and a lot of the games are friendly to the less than coordinated player. When my sister comes over, or my GF comes over with her son, I know we can all chill on the sofa and play some Mario Party 8. When I want to play multiplayer or FPS, I usually just fire up my PC (I prefer mouse/keyboard over thumb sticks and buttons, personally). I'm just waiting for a good RPG and the rumored Star Wars game now (Lightsaber + Wii remote = good, if done correctly).

    More Wii for mii

I'm happy you all hate the Wii, and apparently have no plans to enter this contest. I guess I win then. :)
