Superman, Vicki Vale and Karl Childers are THE INFORMERS!!!

Published at:  Aug 30, 2007 3:28:06 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. This one sounds pretty sweet, actually. Bizarre, but cool... like most of Bret Easton Ellis stories.

So, we have Gregor Jordan (BUFFALO SOLDIERS) directing this story set in the filthy world of 1980s LA. I haven't read the book, but from a quick bit of research it seems that it's many loosely connected vignettes all taking place in the city.

We have a slew of names that just got announced as being attached. Billy Bob Thornton will play a movie executive, Kim Basinger plays his wife and Brandon Routh plays a vampire who lures his victims from the nightclub scene.

Kind of hidden in the trade stories is the casting of a few more people, including Ashely Olsen (I'm assuming it is indeed that Ashley Olsen... one half of the Twins), Jon Foster (Ben's brother who was in STAY ALIVE) and Lou Taylor Pucci (indie favorite... CHUMSCRUBBER, THUMBSUCKER, etc).

Now, Olsen is supposedly turning in a role that is sure to make Eli Roth and the other pervs out there feel like their pants are shrinking to an uncomfortable level... She is a "sexually promiscuous girl," according to the reports. Some of the other characters in the story are a rock star and a kidnapper, so I'd assume Foster and Pucci will be in those roles. I could see Pucci as a rock star.

So, interesting sounding flick. I'm curious to see Brandon Routh in a role so completely different from Supes. Thoughts?

    The Book ROCKS!

    by leckomaniac

For those unaware it is written by Bret Easton Ellis (American Psycho, Less Than Zero, Rules of Attraction). IMDB says that BEE is also writing the film's script, which is awesome. This could be an incredibly bizarre flick if done properly. Can't wait to see how it turns out. Especially all of the vampire stuff and the hardcore sex stuff.

    What about TRIPODS?

    by red_weed

I I hope that john christopher tripod trillogy is still in the works. I' desparate to see that realised on the screen one day and I was under the impression that he was the last one working on it. I'm interested to see this though. I thought rules of attraction was an interesting adaptation, i'd like to see what he does with this. But seriously i wants me some damn tripods movies!!!

Um, is it a LITERAL or FIGURATIVE Vamp?

    by anna valerious

If it's LITERAL been undead for so many years, I'll see it. If it's FIGURATIVE just drinks blood for the hell of it, forget it.

The Best Short In The Book

    by the colonel

There is one story about a girl who moves to L.A. over a summer off from college (an elite east coast type joint, as always per B.E.E.), and she writes a series of letters to a friend, detailing her thoughts, experiences, perspective, etc.

Being an east coaster, she is initially appalled by the L.A. scene and it's superficiality, but slowly and surely L.A. gets its hooks into her and her changing attitudes and personality are reflected in her letters. She starts out bemoaning all the blondes and the scenesters and the attitude around there etc, then over the course of her letters she totally succumbs to it all. It's really creepy and well done. Ellis gets old, FAST, but I loved that story.

    Routh's Deathtrap...

    by sledge hammer

Funny, that's what first thing I thought of too for some reason. Hopefully it works out for him as well as Deathtrap worked for showing another side of Reeve back in the day, as Routh (along with the perpetually under appreciated James Marsden) was the best thing about Superman Returns in my opinion, and this should give him a good "sink or swim" opportunity to show whether he's truly a multifaceted actor, or if he just "gives good Reeve". Pretty good book too, so here's hoping it all works out.

    Speaking of Bob Saget . . .

    by kevinwillis.net

Did anybody else see his HBO special? Good god, that was painful. "Hey, look at me, I can say the word 'fuck'! I can say it a lot! Don't you love me? I say 'fuck' so much!?!? Fuck-fuck-fuckity-fuck-fuck!"I couldn't watch it. And not because of the profanity--because of the pathetic approval-seeking. "Look! I'm wild and crazy! I use bad words! I talk about anal sex! Wow, I'm so cutting edge!"
What? We weren't talking about Bob Saget? Dang, I'm sorry.

Not terribly sure about this one

    by mr.underwater

The "novel" is just a collection of completely unrelated short stories. Meaning it will probably be a vignette movie, and like most vignette movies, some will be good, some not so good, and the overall will be merely "okay." Plus, I kind of hated Buffalo Soldiers.

    RE: the Vampire thing

    by jacensolo

In the book it's kind of ambiguous as to whether or not the re like actual real vampire as in undead, assuming I remember correctly...I tend to think that the short stories are a bit more connected than people seem to think, granted they're also highly connected to his other books, being that he repeats characters all over the place, hope this is done well to push on the possibility of Glamorama actually being made...

    It's a really disturbing book...

    by paul t. ryan

I read it about four years ago and still shudder when thinking about it. The "child kidnapper" chapter is immensely distressing and I'd be surprised if they stuck to the book for that section. Still, Brandon as the rocker/vamp is inspired casting!

    by francis begbie

I didn't like the book, I don't think Ellis has much to say, he reminds me of Larry Clark, doesn't say much just tries to shock you with disturbing images and subject matter. I saw Rules of attraction and liked it but soon after I read Less Than Zero and The Informers and felt it was just more of the same. Maybe I just don't get the books, but that's my take on it.

    Awesome Book

    by skoobyx

'The Secrets of Summer' is the freakiest vampire story I've ever read. Even though (as other posters have pointed out) its ambiguous as to whether this is a real vampire or a kind of satire on LA culture its still good.

This could be a great movie. I think 'Rules of Attraction' is an underrated classic.

    'Amercian Psycho'

    by skoobyx

May also take place only in the character's head. I should point this out before someone else does. In 'Lunar Park' BEE points out there are some fairly obvious hints that Patrick Bateman is just imagining the murders: dead people come back to life, the condo is free of dead bodies all of a sudden etc.

    Its still scary though.
