Studio Plant’s Back To Gush About PINEAPPLE EXPRESS!
Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.
I’m going crazy each time I read another review of this one. It’s going to be August of next year before this hits theaters, so it’s going to be a year of reading “Oh, man, you have no idea how good this is” reviews.
I’m confident that all this praise is deserved. I’m not surprised to read that this works as an action film for Studio Plant, a returning reviewer. I ran into Evan Goldberg and Seth at the SUPER BAD premiere, and as we talked a bit about THE GREEN HORNET (“You are going to get such a fucking nerd boner when we show you what we’re doing,” Evan said, practically glowing), I had to remind Evan that people haven’t seen PINEAPPLE yet, so when they seem surprised to hear that the guys are doing an action movie, it’s because they haven’t seen this one yet.
But Studio Plant has. And here’s what he had to say about it:
Hey Mori,
I'm back with some more green, leafy goodness. The ground must be fertile right now because I've been stretching out my roots lately. This time I've got the "Pineapple Express"; a movie I know you've already reviewed extensively on your site, but the producers are paying me good money to put the word out and a plant's got to eat, right?
We all know who's behind this one, so there's really no need to discuss what Apatow and company have been doing lately (in case you didn't know, it's really good stuff). And, a quick disclaimer here, I'm a huge fan. If Seth Rogen wanted to pay me to be his personal plant I'd do it. I'd sit quietly in a sunny corner of his house and let him feed me water. I think I'd draw the line at him fertilizing me though. Even us plants have out limits.
That said, I really enjoyed this movie. I'm going to come right out and say that it's not funnier than "Superbad". But then, I don't think it's supposed to be. This is an action movie. A damn funny action movie, but still an action movie. It's surprising really. I didn't read much about the movie before going in so it kind of caught me off-guard. This move is violent. Violent in the best, most ridiculous ways.
The plot revolves around Seth Rogen and his drug dealer, James Franco. Rogen witnesses a murder and goes to Franco for help. The bad guys find out and the two are quickly on the run. The movie gets its title from a rare type of weed that Rogen and Franco smoke throughout. There's more to it than that, but there's no reason to ruin it. Needless to say, all the action clichés are in place and poked fun at.
The big surprise for me (other than the violence) was James Franco. He's great in this. I've seen him in other things, "Freaks and Geeks" included, but I didn't expect him to be as funny as he is. And his character's relationship with Rogen is fun to watch. Rogen, of course, is very funny here. Actually, he's more than funny, he's a bad ass. A total action movie bad ass. I had high expectations for him and he delivered. And another great performance comes from Danny McBride. I thought he was good in "Hot Rod", but he's even better here as the drug-dealing "middleman" friend of Franco's. He's got a few scenes in this that are absolutely hilarious.
What I loved about this movie was that, very much like "Hot Fuzz", it spoofs the action genre (specifically, Tarantino movies) while still managing to be a pretty great action movie itself. And not only that, it's funnier than most straight comedies could ever hope to be. I'm not going to ruin any gags, because there's just no point in that; however I will say there's a very funny scene that opens the movie (featuring Bill Hader of "Superbad" and "SNL") and I fear that in future edits they may cut it. I hope they don't.
Of course, they said the movie wasn't done yet, but what I watched was the first time this particular cut was screened. Rogen, Apatow, Evan Goldberg and even Jonah Hill were in attendance and audience reaction was pretty great. Still, I think the movie's nearly a year away so I'd imagine it's got a ways to go. As it stands, I'd pay to see this movie right now. It has a few pacing problems, some scenes are a little long, but with a year to go, those things should be fixed and an even better movie will exist.
Stay off the drubs,

Again!

And a full 12 months away no less. Dammit.
-
..all the other reviewers said that opening sequence was completely unrelated and should be cut, what gives?
-
But not Thai Stick...that sounds more like a porno.
-
Hmmmmmm?

Mori's right: "it’s going to be a year of reading 'Oh, man, you have no idea how good this is' reviews." Jesus, some good shit is getting beaten into the ground here. The only thing that could top it would be if the Wright/Pegg team was churning out more new work.
-
Or if Peter Jackson suddenly revealed that he had a rough cut of SON OF KONG that was going to start screening. Then there'd be no stopping them.
-
The answer is YES. He's just trying to confuse us by being all self-referential!
And I agree. This is probably top 5 most anticipated in 08. -
This is on the top of the list for '08 so far.

Dude still makes a guaranteed $100 million plus whenever he makes an "Adam Sandler comedy", and he also has the freedom to pick stuff like Reign Over Me. Boy, it would suck if Rogen's career ended up like that.
-
Have you considered the possibility that this "reviewer" may secretly be working for the very studio that is producing this film? My God, the implications of that are huge.
-
Have you seen the trailer for TRANSFORMERS?? Dude, you are SO slow...
-
This was true when I saw it a month back as well. I don't think the Hot Fuzz comparison is warranted though, this movie doesn't hold a candle to the greatness that is Hot Fuzz. I'm predicting reshoots before this movie comes out. That all being said, there were parts I enjoyed, mainly the action parts. They just need to make the dialogue parts a little more witty and funny like Superbad.

You're so edgy and ahead of the times! I wish I could be like you. Or I could enjoy these great movies and live my life without unnecessary negativity.
-
My girlfriend and I watched it last weekend and were bored to tears.
And we both loved Sean of the Dead. -
I loved this movie. Def one of the best comedies I have seen in years. Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Judd Appatow, James Franco and company made an instant classic. All I have to say is Seth Rogen as a badass, why wouldn't this movie kick ass? James Franco really knows his weed in this one!

No contest. "It smells like God's vagina."

How does it feel to not have a soul??
