A tidbit about HIGH FIDELITY
From across the pond comes this bit of news from Davey the Fat Boy about John Cusack's latest project... Speaking of which, has anyone seen PUSHING TIN yet?
Tucked away in that corner of the globe known as England we don't really
get many scoops.
That said I did hear via a radio interview that Nick Hornby's book High
Fidelity is about to be made into a film. Shooting should commence 7th
April according to the author and the film will be directed by Stephen
Frears and starring none other than John Cusack. How the story will be
filmed is anyones guess..the original book featured a record collecting
football fan who had been dumped my his girlfriend and so tries to pick
up the pieces.
I am not sure how well known Nick Hornby is in the U.S. Over here he is
a cult writer with his latest book About a Boy doing great business. If
you can tear yourself away from the movies for a few hours I recommend a
read.

If the movie is half as good as the book was, it'll be great...And, by the way, John Cusack is perfect for this role. ....And on another note, I think that since he's so damn perfect he should be banned. That is all.

I don't know how they're going to make it into a movie, but I think I remember hearing John Cusack had something to do with the script? He's always welcome. About a Boy hasn't come out in paperback yet in the U.S. as far as I know, but High Fidelity and Fever Pitch were both satisfying reads. I'm glad they're going ahead...

I have it from a very good source that High Fidelity is actually being shot in Chicago from April to June as opposed to England.
-
A couple of years ago I saw 'Things to do in Denver When You're Dead' at the London Film Festival, a screening that was followed by a short Q&A session with the screenwriter (whose name completely escapes me at the moment). He mentioned that he was working on an adaptation of 'High Fidelity' and both John Cusack and Mike Newell were attached - and then, to boos and jeers, he revealed that it was to be relocated from London to Chicago.
Hmmm. I don't think the US setting will work for the one reason that it ins't possible for a 30-something blokes from Chicago to be as mind-numblingly boring as the 30-something, North London-dwelling main character in 'High Fidelity' (believe me - there is nothing worse than being trapped in a pub with a balding, un-married, vinyl-obsessed thirty five year bloke from Tottenham who's infatuated with an ancient Chess record that has a misprint on the etching in the run-out groove. Believe me. Please believe me).
I hope Stephen Frears can prove me wrong by transforming John Cusack into said sad tosser. -
Yes, there are flyers up in all the independent record stores in my neighborhood of Chicago calling out for extras for a record store scene to be shot in the next few months. The flyer does not state the name of the film, but mentions Cusack and Frears and says they'll be shooting in town from April to June.

Holy Mother of God, Hollywood must be really desperate for a story. Due to a recommendation from a friend, I read this book. What a load of sorry crap. My girlfriend broke up with me, all my girlfriends have dumped me, I hate my job, and I passed up the greatest record collection of all time for 50 pounds because I feel guilty. Bullshit! If someone offerd you the greatest collection of vinyl of all time, would you buy it for 50 pounds. Damn right you would! The only thing that could possibly be more boring than this Hornsby book if it's actually made is Trees Lounge. Ahhhh...art!

Cusack in a film about a nerd who gets dumped. HMMM.. Better off Dead like?!?! Cool.

Unlike the real Nick Hornby, Rob (main character and major jerkola of HF) is not a football fanatic. He's only obsessive about records.
Anyone think Hornby should fess up to being indoctrinated by the Dick Van Dyke Show as a kid? Rob and Laura (Petrie)? How about the record store clerks Dick and Barry (Van Dyke boys)?

I can't see this book working real well as a movie, particularly for an American audience. It might do well in England.
The protaginist is frankly a bit of a loser, and I had a hard time working up much sympathy for him. The book is almost more of a textbook on how not to handle your relationships. There wasn't really tons of humor either, and most of it was during episodes of exposition when the author's talking directly to his audience, something that usually doesn't work too well in the movies.
I can't see what angle they could take that would make the film appeal to a mainstream audience and still stay true to the book.
Heck, I liked the book and I don't think I'd bother to see it as a movie unless it got rave reviews.
Of course, this could turn out like the last John Grisham adaptation, The Rainmaker. There the book wasn't bad (for Grisham), and the film got pretty good reviews from the critics who hadn't read the original. However, when I finally saw the film on video it was seemed like such utter tripe compared to the novel that I couldn't believe they kept the same title.

I liked this book quite a bit.. But I have no idea how it would be made into a movie. I always like Cusack so at least there's a plus. I heard about this quite awhile ago actually.. It's been in the works. Is Hornsby involved in the production?
-
Nick Hornby isn't involved with writing the screenplay. As far as I have heard, John Cuscak and his writing partners from "Grosse Pointe Blank" wrote the screenplay.
-
This was an entertaining book, but so much of it was interior monologue and relationship - type musing, that I can't see it being a very exciting film. There is some good music discussed in the book, as the main character journeys through his precious record collection in search of himself, which can make for a good soundtrack. And who knows, with John Cusack, and some Cameron Crowe style direction, this can wind up to be an update of "Say Anything".
-
Speaking of which, what about Fever Pitch??
Last I heard they were selecting the cast. I think someone from Full Monty was attached to the lead.
Well, Harry, any new news?? -
Fever Pitch was made into a movie in 1997. It starred Colin Firth. While it was based on Hornby's book, it was turned into a romantic comedy type thing about a guy, a girl and the guy's obssession with a football team. It played most everywhere, except the US. But it now has a US distributor who says it will be released in July 1999. Date has changed numerous times so...
The movie was fun and hopefully the American public can get past the fact that the guy is hung up over soccer, which they hardly ever show.
Any other questions. Has a great soundtrack as well, not surprising given Hornby's involvement (wrote screenplay as well).
