TREK HD!! INDIANA JONES!! HEROES!! SEINFELD!! NIKITA!! BABYLON!! FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS!! HercVault!!
SPOILER ALERT !!
I am – Hercules!!

A grown-up look at superheroes from a guy who never read comic books, “Heroes”
was last seaon’s best new show. So get this. Before creating “Heroes,” Tim Kring’s claim to fame was the creation of “Crossing Jordan.” Kring wanted to make a more serialized show for a while now; successful high-continuity series like “24” and “Lost” gave Kring the opportunity, and we are lucky viewers for it.
If you’ve not seen “Heroes,” it’s like “X-Men” without the school. There’s somebody like Shadowcat who can “phase” through walls, somebody like Mystique who can assume any appearance, somebody like Forge who can manipulate machinery, somebody like Wolverine who can heal herself, somebody like Rogue who can absorb the superpowers of others, somebody like Angel who can fly, somebody like Nightcrawler who can teleport, somebody like Professor X who can read minds and somebody like Leech who can drain the superpowers of others. There’s even a guy named Gabe Grey (a.k.a. “Sylar”) who can move stuff with his brain, just like Jean Grey.
Kring, a masterly plotter, has engineered with this complex sci-fi extravaganza the finest streak of twists and cliffhangers in the history of television. Add to the mix writer-producer Bryan Fuller, creator of “Dead Like Me” “Wonderfalls” and “Pushing Daisies,” and we got one of the most watchable franchises on American airwaves.
Cheerleader Claire (invulnerable only on the outside) and her platonic buddy Zach turned out to be the most endearing couple on TV.
Sylar, who grew more powerful every time he ate superhero brain, is one of the scariest villains in filmed entertainment.
And if you seek the heart, look no further than bespectacled and murderous mutant-hunter Noah Bennet, a man willing to tamper with his own wife’s brain in the service of a ruthless employer’s shadowy agenda. The road this dark man travels, particular the turns he takes midway through the season in “Company Man,” sent tears rolling down a few faces, mine among them.
The season finale deservedly gets guff aplenty because 1) Sylar’s defeat was so devoid of imagination (mundane even) and 2) Nathan “sacrificing” himself to save Manhattan didn’t make a ton of sense because Peter also has the power of flight. Still, I even give the finale points for its intriguing return of Richard Roundtree.
Key extras unique to the HD-DVD version
:
1) Most dramatically, only the HD version provides snazzy picture-in-picture video of the cast and creators giving their commentaries, which means HD-DVD purchasers get to find out that series writer-producer Natalie Chaidez, who scripted episodes “The Fix” and “Better Halves,” is hot. (The audio on the HD-DVD and DVD commentaries are identical.) The only season-one commentary not videotaped, apparently, was the one Kring provided for his oversized unaired pilot.
2) Only the HD version can be programmed to provide “Character Connections,” text screens that explain how all the dramatic personae know each other.
3) Only the HD version can be programmed for “Helix Revaled,” which leaps into play every time one of those helix symbols (like the one tattooed on Jessica’s shoulder) appears in an episode. And that helix turns up a lot.
4) Only the HD version can be programmed for “Artwork Presentation,” which brings into special high-def close-ups all of the illustrations comic-book artist Tim Sale created for the show.
Extras common to the DVD
and HD-DVD
versions:
* THE ORIGINAL UNAIRED PILOT (73:35) shows us some of the roads the series belatedly decided not to travel. Learn that Matt Parkman was going to use his superpower to hunt down a terrorist, only to discover that the terrorist he’s been hunting is actually his boyhood pal, a former foreign exchange student the Parkman family took in decades earlier. Discover also how Isaac Mendez’s heroin addiction originally caused him to dismember himself. See how shitty was the original Peter-Natham flying sequence that concluded the first episode. Find out that the original plan was not to make each hour one chapter; Kring originally intended to divide each hour-long episode into several “chapters.” Kring provides an audio commentary explaining why he made the changes.
* THE MAKING OF HEROES (9:59) reminds us that Mohinder was originally supposed to be 55 years old. At Comic Con 2006, an excited Ali Larter admits she’s astonished so many are so keen about a show that hasn’t yet aired. Discover that Chicago native Sendhil Ramamurthy’s “Heroes” accent is a sham.
* THE SPECIAL EFFECTS (8:43) reminds us of Masi Oka’s digital-effects background, and how it helped him communicate with the “Heroes” effects staff.
* THE STUNTS (10:21) reveals that renaissance man Masi Oka has a black belt in Kendo. We also learn that “Heroes” regulars generally like to do their own stunts but are frequently prohibited by those insuring the production.
* PROFILE OF ARTIST TIM SALE (11:25) reveals that the veteran comic-book artist is color-blind, and that others have to add the color to Isaac’s “paintings.” Sale wonders aloud how heroin-addict Isaac can afford his sprawling New York loft.
* THE SCORE (8:57) shows how series composer/musicians Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman are holding up a quarter-century after they backed Prince on “1999.”

NBC’s small-town West Texas soap “Friday Night Lights”
shoots in Austin, this site’s HQ, and one of its major recurring characters is an obnoxious guy in a wheelchair named “Herc.”
Hey now.
If you haven’t seen the show, it’s a serial about a small-town Texas football team, the Dillon Panthers, which took the state pennant last year and may again this year. It’s a little like “One Tree Hill,” only good.
I’ve watched all 22 episodes of “Lights” and I’m here to tell you it’s plenty diverting. Its title theme is one amazing piece of music. The series’ showrunner, writer-producer Jason Katims, is a big talent who worked on one of my all-time favorite TV shows, “My So-Called Life,” before he graduated to create two more of my all-time favorites: “Relativity” and the TV version of “Roswell.”
Extras include:
* “BEHIND THE LIGHTS” (22:33) appears to have been shot as the first season finale was filmed. Learn that New York-born Kyle Chandler talks with a Texas accent off camera. Learn that the “Lights” pilot was the first acting job ever for Scott Porter (Jason Street). Learn that the show’s dizzying documentary-like visual style means the actors never have to “hit their marks.” Learn that Brad Leland, who plays car dealer Buddy Garrity, is a Lubbock native who once played in Texas Stadium, where the show shot its first-season finale. Learn that no one was sure the Dillon Panthers would win the state championship or not until the finale’s script was being written.
* DELETED SCENES. There are loads, but they don’t have fancy titles like the ones on the “Heroes” disc so I will list here the per-episode running time of the deleted footage;
. 1.2 “Eyes Wide Open” (6:34) (Some interesting stuff here with Maggie Wheeler as a boozy English teacher.)
. 1.3 “Wind Sprints” (1:34)
. 1.4 “Who’s Your Daddy” (5:59)
. 1.5 “Git ‘Er Done” (4:41)
. 1.7 “Homecoming” (2:34)
. 1.8 “Crossing The Line” (4:46)
. 1.9 “Full Hearts” (5:36)
. 1.10 “It’s Different For Girls” (2:43)
. 1.11 “Nevermind” (4:11) (Lots of amusing material with Tim Riggins and his new tutor Landry Clark. Their discussion regarding “Of Mice and Men” is a highlight.)
. 1.12 “What To Do While You’re Waiting” (2:03)
. 1.13 “Little Girl I Want To Marry You” (1:02)
. 1.14 “Upping The Ante” (1:07)
. 1.15 “Blinders” (6:08)
. 1.16 “Black Eyes and Broken Hearts” (2:37)
. 1.17 “I Think We Should Have Sex” (2:24)
. 1.19 “Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes” (1:00)
. 1.20 “Mud Bowl” (1:43)
. 1.21 “Best Laid Plans” (5:13)
. 1.22 “State” (2:11) (Contains a hilarious -- improvised? -- scene involving Lyla’s cell phone.)

The new complete series set of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” just fell in price about $95 to $304.99. That works out to $43.57 per season. (Note that individual seasons sell for north of $50 and DeepDiscountDVD has the same series-set for $317.19.) Amazon’s price might stick and it might not, but if you pre-order it now, you lock in Amazon’s lowest price between now and Oct. 9, when the set ships. (And, of course, you can always cancel between now and then if you change your mind or find it even cheaper elsewhere.)

about his not reading comics claim? what a lot of horseshit....he definitely read watchmen thats for fucking sure. fuck heroes. I loved it when it began but it descended so fast into a fucking joke i couldn't believe it....I watched the "finale" and even though I stopped watching around episode 15 even i could tell the finale sucked. awful awful awful show.
-
and waiting for Cheers season 9. I see that Frasier season ten is coming.
-
That's actually a good deal.

And no, I don't get paid if you use that link. -
that Johnny Depp is going to play Barnabas Collins in feature film version. Surely this is just a coinkydink.
-
on the US amazon site, the HD set of the the Original star trek show is going for about $139 still expensive but less so than the fucking stupid RRP.
-
Been seeing the seasons of Babylon 5 for under $20.00 at Best Buy and Frys.
-
Seriously, $60 msrp for a 2 hour movie?
-
Is Hermes head in a jar? Is there something I missed in the last season?
-
. . . when apparently every damned show is collected as a "series" thereafter, for a cheaper price, in deluxe packaging and with a butt-ton of extras? Jesus, that's annoying.
-
the show was not as good as I remembered it being when i was in middle school but i am looking forward to netflixing it.
-
that's been bugging me all day too, I just noticed it and I'm like "huh?!?!?!?!?!?!?!"so I don't think it's something missed, I'm assuming it's something that will be addressed...or not, in typical Futurama sense. I love that show can't wait to see Bender's
-
Did it run 2 seasons? Why can't we get the whole thing in one set?
-
I remember seeing it in the talkback from last week but I can't remember what the date was. Anyone know.
-
it's not always cheaper. Veronica Mars seasons 1-3 sell for $120 on Amazon, but the complete series set is selling for $160. Maybe there are a bunch of extras not on the individual sets, but $40 worth? Really, anyone know why the complete series is selling 3 seasons for the price of 4?
-
WTF? For standard definition? That CANNOT be right.
-
Sorry. A check of http://tinyurl.com/222hl2 confirms the deal fell through. And the U.S. breathes a sigh of relief as prime time will be a Rosie-free zone. :D
-
Who almost always one-downs, in this case, as in lower prices, Amazon.
-
on FNL was a good idea? Proof once again that the networks are run by nincompoops. In all seriousness, it reeks of desperation, a flaling attempt to try and grab viewers, maybe get some free press. What it comes down to is SHE CAN'T ACT! Go back to anything she's been in, she's terrible. Even her more popular roles, like in League of Their Own, and see how bad she is. I guess if you're a bad actress you don't necessarily need to be hot to get work in Hollywood.
-
Thanks guys...now have any of you fellows seen a link to a hi-def version?
-
Where a very surprised inmate tries to rape him.
-
"Man, I thought for sure the guy would get his rent deposit back this time around!"
Come on now! -
If so, you must really have some severe emotional issues.... Or am I just cold-hearted? Has anyone else here ever cried while watching a fictional TV show?
And nofate, you're right, that's pretty stupid, if anyone is watching that, they really have no reason to be alive, and using up valuable air, water and other resources that should be reserved for us evolved primates..... -
It's bad enough that anyone would waste their few remaining brain cells watching that putrid lump of shit on tv, but to actually go out of your way to get the dvd? What a fucking waste....
-
WHAT THE F! MY FAVORITE SHOW EVER, PUT THE ENTIRE SERIES ON DVD PLEASE!
-
Battlestar Galactica Season 3
Birds of Prey
Life On Mars Region 1
Max Headroom
Misfits of Science
Silver Surfer animated series
Spider-Man ('90s animated series)
Superboy Seasons 2-4

X-Men ('90s animated series)
Honestly, do you DVD people want my money or not?
-
but in order to get the DVDs you want you must first go out and buy Judge Judy, Cheaters, and 'Til Death. Then, and only then, will they give you what you want.
-
Im pretty sure Peter can only use one power at a time, and he was currently "using" (although not on purpose, of course) the radiation power.
Make any sense? -
You can order seasons 1-7 of TNG and DS9 in the individual boxes at Amazon right now for $309.00 and $296.00 respectively.
-
There is NO visible sign of rank in Kendo. And also black belts don't really mean much in martial arts, it just means you've mastered the BASICS. Why do people continue to throw around the fact that someone has a black belt to impress people???
-
And you got to admit Hiro doesn't exactly move like a crouching tiger.
-
and was a little pissed at how Universal released FNL. No plastic wrap around cardborad?!? WTF? was that only where i bought mine? every copy on the shelves were good and fuckered so i chose the least beat up one. i mean, christ, just to show off the velcro opening? fuck...
-
so if you buy it and hate it, you get your money back! you can't fucking lose!
-
Just wanted to give anyone who might still have a shot at one a heads up that the Collector's Edition of the first season of Heroes that's only available at Target is - for me at least - worth the extra eight bucks it costs. Totally different packaging, which means that the extra disc isn't just in its own little slipcase; it's actually a part of the packaged set. They did a nice job with it. The extra disc has some character bios, and a 45 minute Q&A that cast and crew did at some Museum of Radio and TV thing. Retarded that it's only available at Target, but - there you go.
-
doesn't have commentaries. It takes virtually no time to do, and they obviously had time to do it this time, due to having a shorter season, and for having no need to rush out the DVDs. It's just sad that a show that has such an immense amount of talent and passion involved, to fall short on this.
-
never had actor commentaries; the way things are now, the audio commentaries aren't compensated, for lack of a better word. They don't get paid for them.
-
this season (for how many eps remains unknown) so grap a cocktail and pray for daylight if your not a fan of hers. ;)
-
And that's one more reason to keep pretending it doesn't exist. ;)
-
Adama: Fuck this!
Starbuck: What the frak does 'fuck' mean? -
I had forgotten about Mama Petrelli's behavior at first. What do we think, character re-write at midseason, or she's putting on a charade (especially telling Peter 'You were always my favorite')?
-
formats for commentaries? They have it on regular DVD. Maybe it's not "true" PIP but it's ostensibly the same thing.
And why is it any better than a straight audio commentary anyway? Don't get me wrong I LOVE commentaries (well, good ones anyway - the Elf and Meltdown ones must be the most boring of all time) whether they're anecdotal or technical. It's just that I don't get why you really need them in the picture considering both the participants and we are looking at the main pic in general because the commentary is SCENE SPECIFIC! -
Microsoft Office???
-
I just want to know her damned power.
-
It better be good.
-
Peter isn't limited to 1 power at a time, at least, that's never been expressed in the show. However, that's not the issue. When Nathan arrives, Peter tells him point blank that he can't do anything; whether it's because he is panicking or if the effort to contain himself is too much we're not sure. But it's made clear by Peter that he can't fly himself away.
-
"The best cliffhangers in The HISTORY of TELEVISION! The scariest villain in FILMED ENTERTAINMENT! The most ENDEARING COUPLE on TV!" Somebody's getting paid by the hyperbole!
-
VHS set came out when DVDs just started getting popular. FINALLY.
-

-
Face it, it's a great premise executed with complete mediocrity.
-
Technically Kevin Arnold was a fictional character, but the series was based on his life around the time of major historical events. And I was only 16 at the time and high school had wrecked my fragile brain by then so spare me.
And yeah, WHERE THE FUCK ARE THE WONDER YEARS DVDS??????? -
That's what I'm waiting on.
I was waiting on X-Men series, but gave up and got the entire thing on bootleg on ebay for cheap. -
I. CANNOT. FUCKING. WAIT.
-
at www. familyvideo . com (w/99 cent shipping)
-
But we get all this other awful dreck.
-
since they released season 1, then season 2, then a complete box set, forcing the most loyal fans to buy into the double dip or go without the majority of seasons.
