Hey!! Peter Liguori and Dana Walden!! Eliza Dushku Just Signed A Talent Deal At Fox TV!! So Here’s A Wacky Idea!!

Published at:  Aug 26, 2007 7:25:42 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Eliza Dushku just signed a talent deal with Fox TV. From a Monday morning story in Variety:

The studio is now starting to integrate Dushku in the development process, giving her a chance to familiarize herself with some of the scribes who have deals at 20th.

Since, as I recall, one of the idling scribes still under contract at Fox is “Angel” vet Tim Minear (and Fox controls the rights to Dushku’s most famous character), why not put Minear and Dushku together for a new hourlong titled “Faith The Vampire Slayer”?

Fox likes highly rated premiere episodes. Maybe I’m wrong, but I suspect a few more people might tune in for Dushku playing a superhero (you know, like on that popular NBC show "Heroes"?) than Dushku playing another cop or lawyer or doctor.

Check with your colleagues over at Fox Home Entertainment. Fox has sold a LOT of Buffiverse DVDs over the last five years.

Read all of Variety’s story on Dushku’s deal here.

Fox honestly treated Tru Calling better than they had any right to. It was low-rated, and not even a critical success, and they did everything they could do to help it get its footing, including picking it up for a second season and hiring new writers to help it get its shit together. (Remember when Jane Espenson was brought on to be its new showrunner?) With all the unfortunate stuff Fox has done to various shows over the years, Tru Calling is definately not one of those horror stories; they gave it a legit shot at greatness, and it simply failed to deliver.

Somebody at Fox clearly likes Dushku. Minear even said in an interview after Drive was cancelled that it was intended for her to be the one driving the big truck that had started picking off someo of the racers. Hopefully with this new deal she'll work with the right people to finally get the star vehicle Tru Calling was supposed to be.

    by robogeek.com

But will they be smart enough to do it? Sadly I'm not holding my breath. And of course, even if they did have the sense to greenlight this, Fox's notorious scheduling/marketing incompetence would no doubt result in a mere 13 episodes produced, maybe half of which would actually air and the rest we'd have to wait for on DVD. But I'd still be thankful for at least that. FAITH ON A MOTORCYCLE, with James Marsters recurring as Spike. Goddamn that would rock.

howbutWHAT?? We most certainly did NOT!

Fellow nerdlings, if you can't stand the mention of "Buffy" or "Angel," this may not be the TV column for you! You might want to stick to AICN for movies, but look to Dark Horizons, CHUD or Television Without Pity for your TV news. I'm fairly certain those sites NEVER make mention of "Buffy" or "Angel" and are better sites for it.

In fact, I hereby forbid all who can't stand references to "Buffy" and "Angel" from reading the Coaxial side of the site. I forbid it for your own pyschic well-being.

I warn you not to defy me.

...and I don't see a spin-off doing better ratings than the original. So yeah, give it up. DVD sales do NOT equal success elsewhere. If that were the case, Serenity would have been a gigantic hit, and they would be doing more of them, and/or brought the series back.Plus there's the fact that Eliza Dushku a)isn't a very good actress, and b) isn't really hot enough to compensate for the previously mentioned lack of talent.

It was about this teenage girl who like to wear tight revealing clothing while saying witty comments that surely are no longer as witty today as they were and had a penchant for falling in love with vampires. Oh and she had the fortune of working with actors that had more talent than her to disguise the fact that she had a limited acting range. I miss that show, it was the greatest form of fiction ever made by man. Better than Shakespeare, Tolstoy, and The Dark Knight Returns." "Old people are weird."

After wallowing in self pity for a couple years...Faith has given up vamp-busting. She becomes a cop by day, partnered with Donal Logue...Their pilot case...looks suspiciously like a vampire "victim" who committed hari kari before she had time to "evolve". Suspect is a low level vamp with ties to a big baddie vampire lord, played by Peter Stormare. Throw in some corrupt top level cops on the take from the vamps to "look the other way"...and I might watch it. Especially when Faith goes undercover at the Vamire Strip Club. Let's make that the second episode...so it has a chance of airing once before Fox cancels it.

...Jessica Jones in a series based on Brian Bendis' ALIAS/THE PULSE, or the Jessica Drew Spider-Woman, or as Sasha Bordeaux in a CHECKMATE series.

As for FAITH THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, I love the Buffyverse but it's time to finally put a stake in it and move on before it becomes as overmined as STAR TREK.

I, for one, would be very happy with a Faith special

    by col. tigh-fighter

Buffy was littered with some of TV's coolest characters. The only thing better than a Faith movie would be a Wican Willow special. And the only thing cooler than that, and frankly possibly the coolest thing in TV history, would be an evil lesbo vamp Willow special. Not that would rock!!!

    by crichtonastronut

She was a cool character that we barely got to know. Plus, she'd be a good way to lead us into more of the Orginal Demons mythology Whendon establushed for Buffy and Angel.

Faith and Illyria, wouldn't that make a good chick team.

Joss did say that it was his favorite character to write for :D

Writers do tend to indulge themselvs, but again, it couldnt be on Fox. For example, Ripper is going to be on BBC. Personally im just glad the Buffyverse isnt dead :)

    Why the fuck

    by rumpel tumskin

would any creative talent with half a brain even try to get Fox to air one of their TV shows. After Sliders/Firefly/Wonderfalls I just don't believe Fox has the intelligence to back a creative show. But they did show their lack of it by giving Tru Calling a second ( kinda ) season. Thank you God for Ron Moore not getting BSG on Fox, though Scifi is almost, if not more clueless than Fox. Flash Gordon....shudder, its 10 times worse than the 3rd season of Sliders and thats PRETTY FUCKING BAD!

    I miss my Dushku fix

    by richard cranium

Just get her back on TV doing something, even if it's doomed to be cancelled in about 20 minutes. Hey, I liked Buffy and Angel as much as the next geek, but I really think it's best to leave it rest. I have no doubt that any resurrection of it on TV would invariably dissapoint the fans of the original. Best just to start her fresh with something new.

    Buffy was dead...

    by frank black

Two seasons before they canceled it but my wife and I watched to the end anyway. Too many missteps along the way messed up one of the best serial dramas dealing with growing up that has ever been on tv.

A Faith the vampire slayer show will NEVER happen! Never! She needs to follow the lead of Charisma Carpenter and head to Playboy now, or better yet Penthouse because it is so much cooler now.

    by daroru

Yes.. yes; yes. Faith the Vampire Slayer really should be made - and as a TV show. That would be very good indeed. I think it would be popular. Can't the TV people see that the people like the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Universe (or "Buffiverse"), we still talk about it and like it even now, a few years after it ended on TV. The comic is quite popular. Herc - use your powers to make this come true. I think this would be one of the best things to come on television, and I would definitely download it and buy the DVD set a few years later.

    Fox should go old school

    by mc satan

As much as I loved the Buffy and actually preferred Angel . . . I think Fox should get back to it's roots. Dushku still looks youthful, right? Time to for TV to emulate movies and do remakes. Can you say 21 Jump Street? Start with Dushku and add Wilmer Valderama (he isn't busy). I need help with the rest of the cast of cops who can go undercover in high school, any ideas?

Nicholas Brendon should be available, Marsters and Mercedes McNab, that'd be enough of a start. Maybe bring Amy Acker in a bit later, and have guest spots by J. August Richards, and the guy who played Andrew. Let Cordelia, Tara, and Anya rest in piece. Have the first big bad be Ethan Rayne, maybe with an assist by Amy the Rat.
Oh and, BTw, buffy's been dead before, but she always comes back.

    by drath

Aren't these the bastards who have Firefly TV rights by the balls and are squeezing them to a pulp? Isn't Whedon effectively retired from giving us new TV or movies because of how hurt he was by FOX? Aren't these the fuckwads who are going to cancel the Sarah Connor Chronicles by midseason if it's any good (if it sucks it'll last, I'm sure)? ************************ While we're at it with the wishlist, it should be called FAITH and SPIKE, and OZ should be in it too. by glodene

I would assume that the actual cover will have the surviving members...In fact, its' been my experience with Idlewild, that they tend to release two to three variant covers simultaneously with the initial release. Btw, you should check out their latest Spike comic arc - Shadow Puppets. It deals with the return of the Smile Time Puppets. It's also written by the same author who is writing the first season six story arc of Angel Titled After the Fall. He was personally appointed by Joss, who was impressed with his take on spike in Shadow Puppets.

  • Aug 27, 2007 10:33:57 PM CDT

    Dr Hemlock....

    by cheif brody

TALENT DEAL - Studio rolls out red carpet to a "star" who would then appear in a vehicle of his/her choosing...with script/director approval and more bonus points on the back end. PRODUCTION DEAL - A production company with a good track record (think JJ Abrams & Bad Robot, or Jerry Bruckhiemer) is tapped to produce shows exclusively for one studio...Guaranteed distribution outlet, bonus for high ratings, etc. DEVELOPEMENT DEAL - Think..."From the creators of Will & Grace...and Sex & The City"...Writers/producers with proven track records given blank checks to create new shows for the fall schedule. These guys get paid to pitch and shoot a pilot which (normally) is already greenlit. ABC approached Barry Sonnenfeld for a show, or development of a show...and now we get "Pushing Daisies" this fall. Developement deals can be inked with a writer, a star, a director, or producer. Sounds like Eliza's deal was a combo of a talent & developement deal, which is not uncommon. I'd love to see it on FX rather than Fox...so she can throw out the occasional "asshole"...or "shit" in her casual dialog. But there are so many Buffyverse alums who could pop up in the pilot...a season finale cliffhanger, etc...I think it would be the safest project for her to proceed with....built in audience and all.

I actually have been reading the Season eight comic, but I figured most of the viewing public had not, and fox execs wouldn't give a crap about continuity. I think ethan rayne is a great character and would make for good television. I think amy VS Faith would make for a good catfight as well.

I don't even care that TRU CALLING wasn't brilliant. I just got to watch Eliza running up and down the street for an hour every week. My God, that wench can run.

And every now and then I watch the changing room scene in THE NEW GUY, just to make myself cry. That body was made in Heaven, but I bet she goes like Hell. What a woman.

PS - Faith the slayer? Bit obvious, dontcha think? How about Eliza as the next version of that Starbuck girl in BIONIC WOMAN? Dushku vs Michelle Ryan? I think my dick might explode.

    The problem with Tru Calling

    by subversive01057

Is that it didn't start to get good until near the end of the season, after they had driven away most of their potential audience. They should have scrapped the first half of the show and started the storyline in the middle.

I'll certainly give her another chance, if it is genre.
