Sunday Brings HBO’s 2nd BIG LOVE Season Finale!!
SPOILER ALERT !!
I am – Hercules!!
“Big Love” can’t get any love. Bill found snakes in his bed, and still last week’s “Big Love” post couldn’t generate more than 38 talkbacks.
Still, if we don’t stick up this post for tonight’s second-season finale, my emailbox will swell with death threats.
What happens this week? Beware spoilers, as HBO has details:
AUG. 26
Episode #24:
"Oh, Pioneers"
(season finale)
* Foiled by Alby in his attempt to gain UEB support, Bill resorts to a new tack to try to bring down his nemeses.
* Preparing for the festivities surrounding Salt Lake City's Pioneer Week parade, the Henricksons are rocked by the appearance of an unexpected guest.
* Margene comes clean to Ana (Branka Katic) about her relationship with "Phil" then takes up her cause with her sister wives - and Bill.
* Sarah and Heather attempt to get Ben to change directions.
* Bill ignores Lois' pleas to take a leadership role at Juniper Creek.
* Margene lobbies for more control in the family, and in her life.
* Barb sets Pam straight.
* After Bill makes his end move in the game to control Weber Gaming, Alby shocks Roman with a power play of his own.
To anticipate the question, the season finales for both “Entourage” and “Flight of the Conchords” arrive next Sunday.
9 p.m. Sunday. HBO.

Love it
-
yea it does, great all around, one of the best tv shows ever
-
low talkback frequency on this show. It really is a fun show. Very addicting. Looking forward to see where this season ends and leads into the next.
-
I love me some Murray. And Bret and Jermaine's friend Dave is whacked out of his fuckin mind. He's great.
-
FOTC is very funny. The songs won't get out of my head!
-
Gee, since this week is the season finale, I bet, NOTHING happens next week.....
put that in your pipe and smoke it -
Now that they have used up all their songs, it will be interesting to see how the show evolves.
-
And I also love Big Love. Second Season> First Season. I fecking hate Rhonda!!!
-
All though I havn't listened to their albums, I doubt they've used all their songs, I'm sure they have plenty more, and are probably constantly working on new material. I LOVE Flight of the Conchords.
-
Man these HBO series seasons keep getting shorter and shorter...
-
is 12-13 episodes. And This has 12 I believe. The reason the seasons seems so short, is they play a new episode each week for 12 consecutive weeks, thus the season ends after 3 months....
-
It's not the best show on TV but it's an interesting show about something that no other show focuses on. Great cast. This isn't the best HBO show but it's a good one and deserves to be part of the HBO family.
-
We need one.
-
and a lot of those were FOTC or JFC or something else unrelated.
-
Since Rome left. Sorry Wire fans, but Big Love is better.
-
7000+ and going strong. Even back in the top ten list as I type this. That neverending enough for you? What is it?
It's the LOST talkback from the season finale.
As for Big Love, it's great. Not a lot to think about with it, like there was with Carnivale or JFC, but it's still a really good show. Can't wait to see what Albie has in store for Roman, although I think it's fairly obvious.
But if you want to see a talkback that is intelegent and has stayed on topic (for the most part) for nearly 3 months now, go take a look at the LOST talkback. -
I second crackerfarmboy and fiesters comments! This is an awesome show with compelling storylines, lot's of depth and fantastic acting. The guy playing Alby is really creepy!
-
One of the best on HBO. I've been a fan since it first aired.
Between this and "The Wire", only reason I've still got HBO. -
She's been absolutely amazing this season, even eclipsing my previous favourite wife Nicki (ITA with fiester). Watching her trying to shore up her crumbling confidence as her doubt in Bill grows has been mesmerising. And then they ramp it all up with the genius casting of Ellen Burstyn as her mom. Fantastic stuff, and a massively underrated show. If they keep the momentum of this final run of episodes going through the finale into the third season, there's gonna be a lot of people regretting not catching this show in the beginning.
And why won't Bill wise up and give responsibility for Weber Gambling to Margene! God! -
I agree with eggbeater. Murray is hillarious. He's about the squarest character this side of the Air force base commander in 'Spinal Tap'.
I also agree with Admiral er . . Neck (wtf), anyway. Tripplehorn is great. Even though she's the oldest wife she's still really hot. She has a kind of Gena Davis like beauty to her.
I think the show is really good and also extremely authentic when it comes to capturing the mindset of the various levels of involvment in religious 'communities'. Yeah, I do have 'some' experience. That fucker who ends phone and vid conversations with 'Truly yours' is one creepy bastard he he. Part of what makes the show so great is the variety of locales. It's a great insight into the 'Utah scene'. Not exactly a vote getter for Mitt Romney though is it. -
I love the turn the show has taken this season. Hell, Bill has the business ethics of Tony Soprano. Great stuff. I love Rhonda looking at the Hendrix poster, and stating, "He has the mark of Cain." Her character is great but the actresses' performance can be somewhat uneven at times. She reminds me of Nelly Olsen from Little House.
I'd like to the meat in a Margene and Sarah sandwich.
-
where you can watch the second season online? It's not on any of my normal sites... And for the record, no HBO at home, I just buy the DVD's but damn I wanna know whats going on now!!!
-
i have seen a few episodes of this show (my girlfriend watches it) and i think it is pretty good. i need some polygamy in my life. unskinny bop bop. rock of love is funny as hell. blonde eighties leftovers.
-
Why did they end like that? It's like a cliffhanger, but...not. That scares me, cause it's too close to a neat and tidy (at least HBO's neat and tidy) that they might not bring it back. I love this show!
-
word to your mother
-
Last years was great, this was weak.
Great show though.
But didn't really feel like a full season. -
the charater development and arcs have been super strong in both seasons. Great show.
-
However, the payoffs you can get from a slow burn are soooo much better. The payoffs in this show are truly *character* based, and not just random plot twists. Last week, when Sarah was dancing with Bill at the wedding, and he tried to give her a little fatherly advice, her response was so brutally polite and blunt "Don't you realize, you have no credibility at all? There is nothing you can say about relationships, or, life, that I will EVER follow." And because I have watched and invested, that was 10X more of a "Holy Shit" moment than anything that happened in the Heroes finale.

Jesus Christ was Flight of the Conchords funny tonight.
by danielkurland
And I think Entourage is producing their best material now, in their fourth season. It's reminding me of how I didn't find the early seasons of the Larry Sanders Show to be funny, but I still enjoyed them, but towards the end, I thought it was hilarious.
-
HBO killed me with Rome and Deadwood, still want to cancel in protest. Was sure they were going to do the same to big love.
-
Barb was great. Fessing up to the neighbor, coming out of the closet, if you will, how it hurt to do so, etc. The very end with Bill sitting there looking at the sister wives and them giddy like school girls was priceless.
For all that went on this season, where did they get? They got Weber gaming but failed at the Juniper "overthrow". I think that's where Bill's thoughts were while looking at the sister wives. -
I think I read somewhere where there was a comparison between Bill and tony Soprano. Now, of course, Bill isn't a mo0bster. Yet, he will resort criminal actions to get what he wants, money. Also, he appears to have less and less morals especially when it comes to sex and money. He lies like Soprano and gets as horny as Tony. Plus he is willing to break the law for business. While the comparison isn't completely legit, there is enough of it to make it challenging.
-
It's been reported widely that Paula Marshall was NOT Paula Marshall.

Finale was somewhat weake than expected................
by crackerfarmboy
Especially when you consider just how many serious plotlines were on-going. Well, they'll have to leave something for season 3.
-
...still doesn't measure up to you guys' pick last time around. Where were you flip flop cops in 2003?
-
MILF...Mormon I'd Like To F@%k. Seriously though...good show but I miss Carnivale terribly.
-
I didn't mention Romney to bait anyone dude i was just sayin. Most people are not that familiar with Mormonism. I personally assess people by the quality of their heart rather than whether they have somewhat whacky beliefs. I like Mormons and I would rather see Romney in the White house than Hills or Obama.
-
Could one not find this show to be riveting? What a great finale. HBO's best show (for now).
-
Was such a great season, not sure what happened here. It just felt like a bunch of little soap-opera moments strung together, with little cliffhangers at the end. That said, what was up with setting up Wanda to kill Roman and then not going anywhere with it?
-
I think it was more that they were tying up stuff from previous seasons and setting up Bill's mom and her Macchiavellian plotting for next season (I guess Frank's gonna get poisoned again, if he continues to refuse the divorce). I might be wrong, but wasn't it made out that Wanda (who was hilarious last night) poisoned Frank and Alby without any prompting? And now we find out she's a pawn of Lois all along. I thought that was pretty cool.
The last few minutes might have seemed a little calmer than the rest, but it started off at a clip and carried on like that for ages. Seeing set-ups from episodes back paying off was enormous fun (Bill's oldest kids sure are fuck-ups). Lots of emotion, lots of great character writing (is this the best written show on TV right now?), off-the-charts performances from everyone. And Bill is a dirty cheating scumbag! Poor Barb. -
I was hoping for some drama, maybe someone dying... WEAK SAUCE

Weak compared to rest of season and 1st finale.........
by crackerfarmboy
This season has been pumped up with action, tension, danger (probably to avoid HBO's recent heavy handed executioner)thus it was rather surprising that the finale was so "tame". It's also surprising since last year's finale was so stellar. I remember that Big Love's 1st season finale made Soprano's "mid-year break" finale look like utter horseshit (which for the record it was). Oh well, I still think it's the best on the channel and it has a bright future.
-
This cartoon makes Mormon doctrine seem creepy and eerie. Mormons are not that bad- they're just drawn - to bizarre cosmic space faith- so leave 'em alone! I know a few Mormon friends and they're all right- nice people. It's a free country! But the cartoon is eerie. I'm glad the TV show depicts Bill and the fundamentalist lifestyle. These are the Mormons, not the LDS, who broke off from fundamentalist practices because they needed to eliminate polygamy and apply successfully for statehood in the good ol US of A. They couldn’t qualify for statehood if polygamy was practiced in their religion. Big Love is definitely not a boring TV show here, and the LDS leadership will never - and I mean never- admit to secretly supporting and harboring fundamentalists, because polygamy is part of their doctrine, just cannot be legally practiced in 21s century Utah.

Big Love is simply a cock tease. Watching this show is completely frustrating as nothing ever happens. There's something in plotting a good show, movie, what have you called set up and pay off and Big Love is excellent at set up, but fails miserably in the pay off departments. This bothers me because the performances in the show are awesome and the writing, scene to scene, is also excellent...but the big picture of the story is failing. They spent so much time showing us that Barb was ready to leave and have doubts...that she wanted to save her kids from the life she chose, that she wanted to go back to school and in essence try to reclaim a part of her that is gone and instead they have her revert to supportive wife #1 because she's afraid of Margene asserting herself? Because she's afraid of Bill taking on more wives? This payoff was limp and flaccid and the true drama in this show should be derived from watching polygamy tear a family apart. Watching Barb realize that her husband is not a God and that she doesn't love him enough to share him with multiple women. Barb is the show. She's the conscience of the show and the way they drew her this season was excellent, until they wimped out. Season Three would have been eagerly anticipated if Barb ended the season leaving Bill and taking her children with her. The chaos that would have caused and the inherent drama would have been priceless and driven the third season to a new plateau. However, this show has a frustrating knack for not paying off what it sets up. When things happen on this show, the solutions always seem to be the one's that hurt Bill and his family the least. Bill comes out of everything having lost nothing. For one season, that's okay. For 2 full seasons? It's a flaw. It's a major flaw in my opinion. As a viewer, we want to see drama unfold in the family and see the characters act. Instead, the characters inability to act is not entertaining or satisfying and will not continue to garner ratings. At some point, you have to give the groundlings what they want and Big Love fails to do that. You tease us and you spend great effort and time doing this, only to wrap it up with a simple neat TV sitcom hug. The business of the compound is the least interesting thing in this series. Bill's business is the 2nd least interesting thing. Barb, Nikki and Margene are the show and watching them all giggling together happy at the end of your 2nd season was a cop out. The family should have started to disintergrate. One of the wives should have left. Instead you have me not looking forward to season 3. I'm pretty sure I'm done with the show. Somewhere along the way the business of Juniper Creek and Weber gaming became the focal point. Take a lesson from a much better more successful HBO show 6 Feet Under. It's about the character's stupid. That's what we want. We want to see them grow and change and fuck up and realize things about themselves. In 2 seasons, the main characters of this show have had some interesting adventures, but have not changed at all. The dynamic is still the same and it's stale. They had a chance to knock it out of the park last night and instead it was a sacrifice bunt to get the runner over to 2nd. Big Love can do better, but until the creators of this show start to step out of the safe confines of not really changing anything, this show will never ascend to the any great height. For a well crafted show, it's a sincere disappointment.
-
And still can't get a flame war started. I think that's the fourth sign of the apocolypse.Big Love is a great show. They have a very fair and sympathetic (not to mention story-driven) take on polygamists, non-polygamists, the religious and non-religious, Mormons, the LDS and so on. And there's on ongoing subtext that possibly all that Brigham Young-era Mormonism, including the Principle, is legit, and Bill is the rightful prophet, rather than Roman or Albie.
If Big Love was overly preachy or hostile in its portrayal or Mormons, or the latter day polygamists (which is strictly frowned upon by the LDS) then it wouldn't be nearly as fun a show to watch. As it is, I love watching them try to make a real, lvoing family out of their strange polygamist brew, and I think, if anything, the show illustrates why guys should not want to be polygamists. Three wives nagging you and fighting amongst themselves? What about four? Twelve? Yahhhhhhhh!
It's a great show. Let the hatahs find something else to watch, but I'm sure glad Big Love is going to be back for a 3rd season. -
In some ways. Certainly, they both have their own moral code and generally feel justified in their actions, irrespective of how the outside world might view them.Everyone around Bill wants to point out he's engaged in a vendetta, but he is still certain he's doing the right thing. And he's going to do it, and that's that. Yet, he considers himself both moral and spiritual. I don't know if Tony Soprano would have considered himself spiritual, but he certainly had a moral code that he lived by. Even if, most of the time, he was breaking the law. So there are some correspondences there.
-
I agree with the majority of posters that last night's finale was weak, especially considering how strong the rest of the season has been. Why'd they bring back 'That Bavarian Waitress?' Her character and her brief romance with Bill was interesting but I saw no need to revisit it. Same with Margene wanting to be a surrogate mother. The show spends too much time revealing secrets that we already know. There are just so many characters, they all have to be given information at different times but how are those instances supposed to pass for plot developments? I feel like too much of the finale was spent getting the characters on the same page. I would've liked to have seen Bill's rise to power on the UEB, not a finale that points to another season of Bill wrestling the Grants for control. I'd also like to get to know the UEB board better since they seem to be so instrumental in affecting Bill's mood and the decisions that he makes. One of the complains about the show that I've heard is that no one is likable and while I completely disagree with that assessment, I do think the writers have made Bill a little less likable as an inattentive husband and father. His life is too business-oriented, and while that's perfectly understandable since he basically has 3 families to feed, I'd like to see him rededicate himself to his family values. That said, I really enjoyed Sarah's arc this season and last night's devirginizing (and 1/4 tit-shot) was a necessary development in her maturation as a young woman with beliefs independent of her family's. Amanda Seyfried is a very talented young actress. If I ever run into her, I'm totally asking for her number.
-
I know this show isn't really comparable to the Sopranos, but I feel that Big Love give me a lot more to work with story-wise than the Sopranos typically did (especially the last few seasons). And if I were to complain about the Sopranos, 10 people would respond that I'm just another one of those people who want constant gun-fights to keep them entertained. But this show is proof that I don't need gun-fights, island reveals or super-hero power demonstrations to keep me interested. You know, it has a coherent story, something most of our other favorites have been lacking in recent years.
Most people's criticisms here seem to be that it's not moving fast enough on the Barbara storyline, but that's huge and they can only do it once. She's like an alcoholic getting on and off the wagon and she's not ready to leave Bill just yet. But you can bet it's coming. It was moved along quite nicely this season. They most certainly did not bury it.
The same is true of Bill's ascent in the UEB. He couldn't take over until Weeber gaming is more secure since that'll mean an end to Hendrickson hardware. But they are moving in that direction. I even got the feel from Roman's wife that she'd help Bill since she's had a taste of a future without Roman, and Albie won't care to help her in any way. Whereas if Bill rises, then she's protected given that she's Nikki's mom. And Roman might even support Bill now that he's likely in jail.
Granted, I can't see Bill taking over the compound until Barbara leaves (or perhaps that's what propels it), but it has to be coming. What a great second season and it can only get better from here. It was so much better than Lost, the Sopranos and BSG were this past season. If it were one of those shows, then Bill would have converted to Islam in the finale and everybody would be here calling it genius for such a bold, incomprehensible move. -

Not too shabby. Looks like the Big Love fans are making their way out of the woodwork.
-
Fuck. I was gonna heartily agree with _Maltheus_ (up to a point; leave Lost alone, dude!) about the quality of the finale, and say that I'm glad Barb didn't leave (or rather, I'm glad they didn't write that event. Of course I wouldn't want Barb to leave. She's awesome). Just like exie I thought it was a foregone conclusion, but it went for the surprise. She can't leave Bill because she doesn't want to leave her annoying jerkoff son with him, plus who would want to go back to her family and have to put up with that smug obnoxious sister making judgements on her for the rest of time? So her efforts to make a life for herself within the marriage haven't worked, and she's torn with love for Bill and an obligation to everyone else, so she takes Adilene's advice and puts herself in a position of power. It made sense for her to do that as a character and had been building for a while. Also, it meant that Bill could sneakily use Weber Gaming to fuse his family together, and make her compliant in his actions, that sneaky son of a bitch.
MiraJeff, as for Bill becoming an asshole, I always thought the show was lacking something, even though I still liked it in the first season. Now, he's a bit of an asshole and the show works. His toothlessness in season one meant he seemed like a bystander while his wives jostled for his attentions. Now he's a protagonist, using them for his own political, sexual, and financial means. Fortunately, I totally buy his transformation. Considering the amount of stress he's under, it's a miracle he has any decency left. Instead, he cracks under the pressure of getting Roman off his back, and finds a way to make his family truly independent. He thinks it'll be easy if he just makes one compromise, but it's never that easy. It just keeps on getting more difficult, but he's in too deep to pull out now. If Nicki is addicted to gambling, Bill is addicted to business deals in much the same way. And multiple-wife sex. I may miss GoodBill a bit, but I'm enjoying BadBill much more, even though I keep thinking, "BadBill! Bad!" when he's rolling around his closet with Bavaria. -
Fuck, I give up.
-
I kinda want her to come back as a regular character in the next season. But then, my envy of Bill might become too great. He already has 3 hot wives. Grantes, Nicky doesn't look her best in her conservative clothes, but in the season one finale, oh my GOD! If they hadn't been outed, Bill would have totally been spending the night at her house. She just needs to chill out and enjoy the oral and she'll be fine.
-
I've only seen the first season but I'm still waiting to hear if the oldest son will end up sleeping with the third wife. I could have sworn I some hinting towards that in the first few episodes. If it's not, it should because that is good drama.
-
I'm glad its coming back for another season. After Rome and Carnivale got cancelled after their second seasons, I was getting kinda disappointed in HBO.
-
I lived in SLC and mormons there are damn bizarre. The amount of secrets they keep is staggering. They used to keep their archives open to the public until someone found evidence of early mormon settler's massacring indians. The amount of sexual abuse which is hushed up by the church makes the catholic priest's seem chaste. The lds church tells their members to come to the church with reports of molestation instead of going to the police. It's much easier to keep face that way. Hmm, maybe the catholics should adopt this practice. This just goes for the Utah lds members. Mormon's outside of Utah seem pretty normal. Of course, according to the Utah mormon's, you can't be a 'true mormon' unless you live in the state.
-
I agree that they did make him a bit more of an asshole this season and that it works well for the plot. But one thing I never really understood is how did he and his brother come from those parents. Even Bill doesn't begin to approach the level of his father. I wonder if it's the writers intentions to slowly drift him that way before the end of the show, perhaps making him indistinguishable..
As for Weeber, I never really got the sense that Bill was trying to do the right thing by his family as much as he was engaged in a Vendetta with Roman, going back to the time when he was kicked out of the compound. He could have went after other gambling companies (or other non-wholesome businesses), he went after Weeber to attack Roman. And that made little sense to me too, given how incredibly dangerous it was. But given that and how his parents are, I'm thinking more and more that his nice guy facade is total bullshit. He's an alcoholics-anonymous type with a two year chit, and I'm kind of waiting for him to go back to drinking, harder than ever. If he does eventually take over the compound, he'd have to revert to form first.
