Grunt comments on BLACK HAWK DOWN

Published at:  Apr 06, 1999 3:23:51 AM CDT

I can't remember if I've ever talked about this project... I don't think I've ever heard of it. Does anyone know anything else about it's state of existance right now? Talent? Directors? Development Hell? This (I Believe) is the first I've heard of it...

I am a long time reader and fan, who finally has something to
write about. I go to West Point where I'm in my second year as a cadet,
I am hoping to fly helicopters in the Army when I graduate. That's why I
was interested when I saw that our Cadet Store had a book signing by
Mark Bowen for his book Black Hawk Down. It's the story of the
helicopter that was shot down over Mogadishu, Somalia, on October 3,
1993. The Special Forces soldiers that were on board for a strike
against a Somali war lord were trapped in the city, surrounded on all
sides. The book covers the story of how these soldiers fought off
attacks from a larger force that knew its way around the city, and used
civilians as human shields.

The book is a 100% true story, and Mr. Bowen told me he is
working on a screen play. He also told me that the rights have been
purchased by Jerry Bruckheimer (Armageddon, Enemy of the Sate.) When I
expressed some concern over this turning into a special effects
showcase, he told me that he is making sure the human element isn't
lost. I hope that element isn't lost since this story is essentially
that of 20 year olds my age that are placed in a horrific situation.
This film could have the emotional sting and relevance of Saving Private
Ryan, but in a modern context. I've run long on my letter, thanks for
your consideration Harry.

Best Wishes

Grunt

    read the book

    by whiskey nick

I just finished the book and highly recommend it to anyone intereseted in military affairs or action/adventure in general. This would make an incredible movie. In the hands of the right director/producer it could be another SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. In the hand of Bruckheimer...

I am reading the book !

    by norm3

It will make an awesome movie if its done right!Having Jerry Bruckheimer doing it gives it about 50% chance of it being good movie! If its done as well as Crimson Tide and not Conair we will be lucky!

    "Grunt"?

    by clark savage

Kid, if you're 19 years old and a cadet at West Point, you're not a "grunt". Try to give yourself that nickname when you get a unit, and the enlisted men will tear you a new asshole, whether you know they're doing it or not. Don't call yourself "Grunt"; you're not one and you probably never will be.

    Clark Savage is right...

    by fortdrum

...take it from a former grunt. The best kind of LT to be is one that keeps his eyes and ears open all the time, seldom opens his mouth and always watches his NCOs. Remember, the average PFC will have a lot more field time than you when you reach your unit.

    old news

    by the management

This was first reported about a year or two ago in THR. At that time, Simon (Con Air) West was attached to direct. My impression is that this is not only a great story about young men in combat, but also the dangerous intersection where American humanitarinism meets American imperialism. (Kosovo, anyone?) No doubt Bruckheimer will ruin it.

    Clark Savage

    by bohica

Gee, you're pretty tough there Savage. Guess someone has to prove to the world that he's some kind of wise war hero. That cadet has probably heard the same bitch from plenty of bitter enlisted guys and has officers breathing down his neck to boot so he the last thing he needs is for you to throw in your worthless two cents. He can call himself Rambo if he wants, I'm pretty sure he has sense enough not to introduce himself as Lt. "Grunt" if he gets a unit. He doesn't need your approval. You may be right but you don't need to go around being a complete fucking tool about it.
Oh yeah, Blackhawk Down is a great book. You can read it as a series of newspaper articles on the Philadelphia Enquirer website.

Blackhawk Down on CNN this weekend...

    by aiken drum

...there's a documentary about that same situation, with that same title, on CNN this Sunday at 8PM. Don't know if it's any relation to the book or not.

    Grunts

    by cds

Perhaps word usage has changed since some of us old-timers had the honor of breaking bread and taking fire with real grunts. But in the spirit of these PC times I guess if Bill Clinton can call himself Commander-in-Chief, then a cadet at The Academy can call himself a grunt. And rest assured that whoever gets the gig to write the screenplay, produce and direct any movie about Army helicopters will have never been flown in one, certainly not under fire and in the company of grunts.

    Something funny....

    by wolfpack

When my dad was in the Marine Corps he went to Mogadishu in the mid 1980's (doing some JAG stuff no doubt). He brought me back a shirt that said, "Mogadishu: A Vacation Spot Like No Other." I wish I'd saved it. Mmmmmmm! That's good irony!
