New live action HALO short by Blomkamp leaks online!! Warthogs in action! Banshees! Brutes! Needler spikes!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. As a Halo nerd and a movie nerd I have to say I've found these little glimpses as to what Neill Blomkamp's movie version would (and probably will) look like. Both shorts stress the real world application and only give us tantalizing glimpses at the vehicles, armor and weaponry.
I gotta say... of all the cool shit in this spot, the thing that made me smile the biggest was seeing the Needler spikes hit the wall behind the soldiers, stick and then shatter. It's not focused on, just something for us Halo geeks.
This short ends quite abruptly, but as you can see from the below... it's leaked, so it could very well not be finished. But you get a good idea what we're in for. I can't wait to see this in Quicktime or downloaded in high def from X-box Live! I first saw this here! Enjoy it while it's still online! Thanks to Paul for the heads up!

Visuals look amazing (what we can see through the crappy recording), and true to Blomkamp's awesome gritty docu-style. Sound is either not coming through the recording haze or very unfinished though. Let's hope they wrap this up and get us a glorious QuickTime version! (And that someone pulls their head out and FUNDS this dang thing. Peter Jackson should just do it himself and keep 90% of the profit.)

I really like the doc-u style for the potential "Halo" movie but I just can't Imagine how the classic Halo theme will play into that. I mean, I think we can all agree that it wouldn't be halo without the theme.

obviously this is nowhere near what the film would look like... keep in mind that this movie was essentially dropped, of course they have no budget to make these small clips. Still, even with the setbacks for making this, it looks incredible.

What little social life I have right now will be ruined by countless hours with this game. 4 PLAYER ONLINE CO-OP....grab 3 of your friends no matter where they live and play through the campaign.... plus there's this new "Forge" mode, that lets you basically edit the multiplayer as you play, adding all kinds of objects, changing the gravity (probably), etc. And the stellar multiplayer fun that is closer to the original Halo than Halo 2.... ok, geek rant off...

Blomkamp has a pretty good eye for visuals, but it just doesn't seem to carry any "weight" to it. It looks like a couple of high school students running around acting in a homemade film, but their dad gave them millions of dollars for special effects and props. He might make a good DP or special effects lead, but can he direct live people in a believable manner? I'm not sold. And mefrog, I wouldn't say that WETA/Peter Jackson are giving him "no budget" to make these clips. That is a very shortsighted statement. If they are building replica, operational Warthogs and providing the effects that they are, that is hardly no budget. The problem isn't the budget, it is his ability to direct actors and have them interact with the world he has created.

Why does everyone think this game and hence the film is soo good.
Apart from the gameplay i pretty much hate halo, i don't care for the character much, i like the aliens more than that dick in the suit.
I mean why the fuck would i want to like the guy in the suit, do you not think about what he smells like.
Trapped in that suit for most of his life i bet he smells like the shit under your toe nail.

That shit was fucking incredible. Hurry up and fund this movie already. Microsoft is already dropping hints that they are stull wanting to make this film. They announced they plan on making at least $155 the first day of release on Halo 3, saying something about beating Spiderman 3's first weekend box office. Laying down the hint that they think a Halo movie would make bank. And if it was anything like that short I imagine it would. Halo 2 made $125 the first day.

...it wouldn't have received the praise that it has. Hell, Dan Hsu over at 1up even told us in his blog that his "10" for the last game was mainly for the multiplayer aspects, and I'm sure he wasn't the only one that scored that way. If the Halo flick gets off the groun, yes, Microsoft fanbos will eat it up, and it may do well with th general public, but the source material does not, will not, and CAN NOT hold a candle to ALIENS. I don't even think it can stack up against Staship Troopers (I'm serious). Halo is the equivalent of Heroes when it comes to videogames. It's a mishmash of other properties, with barely anything original to warrant a film. Also, they'll have to drastically alter the Master Chief character to appeal to a broader audience if the film does get greenlit. At least with Iron Man, you got Tony Stark to fall back on. Here? Zzzz As much as I love Blokamp's work, I really hope he debuts with a original property, he's too good for this crap.

Blomkamp has well and proven that he can show battle for the disorienting mess that it is but I feel like he's utterly missing the characters here. I know the Marines are mainly fodder but even in the games they had character and I cared if they died. So far I've seen a handful of battles where I never know what the fuck is going on nor who is doing it.
If he can pull off making the Marines into characters, Master Chief into the muthafuckin' Master Chief and the battle scenes at least moderately coherent (and less likely to make me puke all over the theater), I'd love to see a HALO movie from him. -

been done before on other FPSs. The only reason it was such a hit is because Halo was the best FPS on the xbox (because there wasn't anything better) and introduced online play to console gamers.
Anyways, I would rather see a Half-Life movie than a halo movie. I found it more interesting to have a scientist trying to survive the consequences of his own experiments than a super soldier fighting aliens. It has been done before.

How is this any different from any other "soldiers versus Aliens" movie? I mean, didn't we see this in ALIENS and half a dozen of the other imitators? This looked like a Clancy book but with aliens.
I just don't get the mass appeal of Halo. It's a good FPS, but it's not like the "story" is anything special. It's certainly not very deep. -
The actual world. big swooping surface flying up over their heads. And aliens. And giant alien buildings. Less Iraq, more Ringworld. Other than that, I am pleased it's not for the kiddies.

When Battlestar Galactica is airing. Nothing in that clip looked like anything that isn't a weekly occurence on Battlestar. Nothing groundbreaking or awe-inspiring or visually surprising. It looked like something Felix Alcala or Michael Rymer or Sergio Mimica-Gezzan did on a TV show schedule with Zoic handling the effects. Not to denigrate what they do, but to show that Blomkamp is about 3 or 4 years behind schedule if those visuals are supposed to wow anyone not already familiar with the best sci-fi currently in front of anyone's eyeballs.
Look--if the game makes 150 million dollars of profit in ONE DAY then what the fuck do you even NEED a movie for? The game works as a game and is successful enough as a game and rewarding enough as a game that the "legitimization" of it being made into a movie seems like masturbation, to me. It doesn't need to be a movie. It works as a game. It works better as a game than most movies do as movies. The leap is utterly unneccessary and not worth the cost to bring it to the screen. -

And samsquanch, yeah man, the best part of Halo was the environment. The idea of looking off into the distance to see the planet curve upward was pretty awesome. They could do a lot with that in a movie, if they're smart enough. -

Bioshock is the FPS I have been waiting for....can't stop playing it ever since I got it early 2 days ago. Halo is entertaining and has a amazing online multiplayer environment, but the plot is generic. Everyone has seen it before and this few minutes clip does nothing for me....just looks plain.

Looks very unfinished (no music!) But still looks f'in awesome. Gotta love that gritty, shaky direction! Looks more like Children of Men than Halo- and that's the way it should be. The Halo movie should be an ass-kicker of a war movie, but should NOT retread or resemble the videogame!

Sure, it's cheesed at parts. It's got bits borrowed from Aliens, namely the marines.But, hell, don't try to tell me the story doesn't go anywhere interesting. I mean, it's a fun game for multplayer, but the story won't translate to a satisfying cinema experience. As with Doom, the lead character's intentionally written as a blank slate in the game to allow you to project your own personality onto him. As with Doom, it borrows the military aesthetic of Aliens. As with Doom, it'll fail as a film, because the military aesthetic of Aliens wasn't what made that film good; it was the underlying theme of motherhood. Without a decent underlying theme, your film *will* suck. Just give Blomkamp a decent budget and set him loose on his own project...

2 minutes in that game is more intense then that "leaked" Halo video. And after thinking about it, that Master Chef outfit looks really goofy in real life. And I do believe there has never been a piece of fiction, until Halo came along, with an Alien race that destroys planets *sarcasm*
