Frank Miller lures another femme fatale to THE SPIRIT... and a great DP to photograph her!!!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Damn, Frank Miller must be on cloud nine right about now. First Scarlett Johansson and now Eva Mendes as femme fatales... Sam Jackson as the villain... the head of the Monster Squad as The Spirit (well, technically... since Gabriel Macht is Stephen Macht's son... and Stephen Macht was Sean's dad in MONSTER SQUAD... anybody?)
Eva Mendes will play Sand Saref, the Spirit's ex-flame.
Mendes and Johansson in a Frank Miller movie... good lord... Are there any red-blooded hetero readers that doesn't love how this movie is looking?
Also announced was the hiring of Bill Pope (THE MATRIX, DARKMAN, ARMY OF DARKNESS and SPIDER-MAN 2) as the cinematographer... so we know this'll look amazing. This movie will surely rock, no?

no, this movie will not rock. I might kick ass, but rock, not so much
-
Linda Fiorentino is the definitive femme fatale from the last 20 years. Any other attempt must be compared to her performance in The Last Seduction.
-
It's like playing Six Degrees of Frankenstein.
-
Who keeps hiring her? Has she ever displayed an OUNCE of acting talent?
-
i hope he'll be able to handle the giagantic size of scarlett's boobies
-
Darkman is the SHIT!
One of my favorite superhero movies of all time.
Glad the DP will be on this. -
The Dude is awesome and all but He's only directed 1/2 of a movie w/ a kick ass director standing over his shoulder. Might be a little early to assume everything he craps is gonna be gold.
-
How can they put that skanky J-Lo wannabe alongside Scarlett? At least put up Roselyn Sanchez (and make her say Esecret Eservice).
-
Frank Miller will do a good job directing this film, drawing storyboards is a lot like drawing comic books.
-
just so people will know that I'm not a troll, I'm a legitimate poster, and that I will always honor my word (unfortunately). About a week and a half ago I stated that Superbad would not make more than 4 million dollars in its first weekend. I stated that if it did, I would post my 1989 highschool graduation photo. Well, here it is:

Please, be kind. -
sweet, best movie ever?
-
Sure he's getting big names because of the success of Sin City and 300, but what has he done to make those into MOVIES? His comics work has been crap lately, so I'm not sure he'll be making a great movie here. Maybe I'm wrong. I hope I'm wrong, if for nothing other than Will Eisner's immortality.
-
I'm reading Darwyn Cooke's "The Spirit" and it's great. Very light, and very fun. is it anything like eisner's books? i've never read a single one. I'm a little worried about Frank doing a really super dark Spirit movie (unless of course that's how he's supposed to be) are there any Eisner Spirit books you'd recommend? i'm off to the comic shop later.
-
so I'm in agreement with Charlie up there, recommendations.also lest anyone forget Frank Miller was responsible for Robocop 3 so forgive me if my enthuism is a little...lukewarm
-
I'm with you, it's my favorite ever. ED2 might be the better film, but man there's just something about AOD. It's been my fav since the first time I saw it.
-
Usually that doesn't bother me in the slightest, but with Eva, it does. I mean, Ghost Rider was already awful, she just made it unbearable. Of course, if she showed her rack, it wouldn't have bugged me, and if I was plowing her from behind, I wouldn't complain about her lack of personality, but in a moviefilm that I'm supposed to enjoy? Theres gotta be more talented trim to poke, Frank.
-
nimrods. all of you. believe it.
-
He can make any movie look great. Lots a reasons to be excited about this, but he's number one.
-
... So much that he made a super badass sex-part comic based on his actual script. Try to find it, it's pretty crazy.
-
you have John Cusack hair.
-
the sexiest scandinavian blondie, the hottest chica latina and the most badass motherfucker all in one movie, can that Macht guy handle all this? can Miller? hope he keeps i touch with Tarantino and Rodriguez when he needs a guiding hand.
-
Why does The Spirit have a secret identity? His alter ego is dead, and I haven't seen any evidence (in the originals) that he has any family that could be threatened if the bad guys knew who he was. So why bother?
-
Is it Scarlett? Or is customers?
-
Miller's not a director (don't give me that Sin City crap - that was all Rodriguez); agreed his later stuff is not what it should be and he makes for a funny "actor" (loved that dialogue with Mickey in Sin City as the priest)
-
from the two specific angles at which she looks okay.
-
If she just keeps staring off into space eventually she'll get an Oscar for it. I guarantee you.
-
I'll never watch a movie with her, no matter who directs.
-
Right on her sexy mole.
-
REST ASSURED, WE WERE AT COMIC-CON RECENTLY, AND THE WAY THE GUYS WERE DROOLING OVER US, IT'S CLEAR WHO SHOULD *REALLY* BE STARRING IN THIS MOVIE.
-
...what?
-
Charlie-I believe DC has put out a few Archive editions of the Eisner Spirit. Also,if you go to a back issue shop, you may find the Kitchen Sink published reprints from the 70's-'80s.The lighthearted approach Cooke takes is only a patch on what Eisner did in his post WWII years with the character.Mr.Carrion in the original was a way more sinister figure than Cooke's reimagining, emblematic of the noir approach Miller is seeking. Some of Eisner's stories barely feature the Spirit at all,but focus on such Twilight Zoneish situations as a guy who can fly or another who can kill by saying,"Drop dead!"Good luck with finding these original stories, they are justified classics.
-
Right, who gives a shit then.
-
... dramatic stalemate ensues.
-
kind of sucks. The handheld shots in spiderman were the worst I've ever seen....and the matrix isnt anything but a flat green filter over everything.
Hows bout a roger deakins..or someone with talent? -
i'll look into them
-
Quint. His father player the father of a main character? How the fuck did you know that?! I mean, I also have some useless and unusual information in my head but that the most obscure reference I've ever heard!
-
Eva 0
-
Plain and simple, she sucks. Why Frank, why?
-
I thought this was about a porn film.
-
Eva rocks, you guys are a bunch of fags...then again I already knew that. That being said, I can't wait for this movie to be out.
-
director because he drew some comic strips. Setting up shots is only half the job though; he also has to cast the right people and draw great performances out of them. His cast so far doesn't indicate that.
-
Wow! What a brilliant casting coup!
2002 is really going to be a great year for that studio. -
was hotter than Eva...uhm Esposito is like 50 years too old dude, might as well cast Sharon Stone for that matter. Eva's hot and she got the part so quit your pussy ass whining. You don't like it, stay home playing with yourself looking at pictures of Uhura.

They should have gotten Will Eisner to direct it...
by transmetropolitan
Oh, right.
-
I absolutely love the tubby basement dwelling bastards that sit on these boards talking about how someone is 'unattractive.' As if any female would give them the time of day, let alone one as gorgeous as Eva Mendes. Hilarious.
-
Have any of you even READ The Spirit? How anybody thinks this could be an exciting movie is beyond me. It's up there with The Phantom.
-
but is Quint throwing around the term "femme fatale" a little too lightly? Not every female role in a noir-ish property is automatically a femme fatale, not even in Miller's world.
-
The man shot Team America. Nuff said.
-
I won't go so far as to say Eisner invented the femme fatale, but the ladies in The Spirit definitely qualify for that moniker.
-
Ghost Rider was a fucking mess that was made somewhat enjoyable by the sight of her in those skin tight dresses. But the moment she opened her mouth... Oh course, after Sin City, we couldn't expect any woman in a Frank Miller scripted movie to have anything close to natural dialouge.
-
When is someone going to remake Double Indemnity? Rodriguez should get all over that, maybe. I dunno, what directors today understand noir enough to make a good new Double Indemnity while being true to the source material? Thoughts anyone? Even bother to re-make that classic?
-
She is really sexy and has an amazing body, but she is a terrible actor. I'm glad to see that a lot of people here agree with me on this, because I've been feeling for a while like I'm the only one who can see this (judging from the fact that she keeps getting cast in high-profile films and keeps sucking in each of them). If you disagree with this, I offer GHOST RIDER as evidence.
-
now that you mention it, I'm going through the scenes and dialogue in my head: rosario dawson - funny; goldie chick - blanker than ScarJo (Kill 'em for me good, Marv - HA HA HA!); Alba - terrible; Brittany - good performance for a weak character.
good observation - was he like married and divorced a bunch times? gay maybe? -
ScarJo (that blank stare); Eva (was she an MTV chick at some point?) and Jessica Biel (for a glint of hope like 'the Illusionist', she puts in 5 turds like 'chuck & larry'
REA-LLY nice to look at though. -
he of team america fame!!!
-
My enthusiasm for this movie just took a hit.
-
And the film should take place on a trampoline to stay true to its comic book roots (ie being for total wankers).
-
She is a TERRIBLE actress. I had a friend who went to high school with her and all she wanted to do was act. Looks like all those years of training hadn't paid off. She can't even pull off a convincing Mexican accent and she's fucking Mexican too. Now that is an insult.

A "comic book" guy directing a movie is like having...

I FIND THEM QUITE UN-HORNIOUS.
cornponious, YOU SUCK. -

Thanks for the heads-up on the Robocop 2 comic
by and nicolas cage as fu manchu
Just finished reading it. So much better than the theatrical Robocop 2&3.
-
Actually she's Cuban-American.
-
what exactly is your point?
-
She can't speak Spanish and she sure as hell can't produce a good accent. Really, it's not that hard. All looks, no brains? Check.
-
:( :P
-
I didn't even know about the Spirit until I read Eisner's Comics and Sequential art book. I don't think it's an immensely popular character but I've been wrong before.
But if history is any indication, movies that feature characters from yesteryear rarely if ever do very well when translated to the big screen. Look at the Phantom and The Shadow. Now we have the Spirit? I don't know....... -
And cannot act.
-
Anyone..?
-
the chap who delivers my post. He's always got a cheerful demeanour and a joke to tell, not to mention a sound knowledge of football. But I'm surprised they let him direct a film. He must have told some Hollywood mucker a really good joke or something.Unless there's somebody else in the world by that name.
-
.....on the BIG SCREEN.
-
I think Eva Mendes is quite hot and she seems pretty cool in interviews. She's got this cute girl-next-doorness steeped in ample Latina curves. Yeah, it works for me.
Anyway, as much as I'm a fan of her looks, I'm not yet sold on her acting ability. She seems a bit... lightweight to me. "Ghost Rider" wasn't much of a vehicle for anyone's acting chops, but she came across as especially wooden. Maybe she'll kick royal ass in Miller's new film and give a nicely nuanced peformance. But I'll need to see it to believe it.
Still, Scarlett Johanssen in a Frank Miller movie? I'm there.
