Frank Miller lures another femme fatale to THE SPIRIT... and a great DP to photograph her!!!

Published at:  Aug 22, 2007 7:56:40 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Damn, Frank Miller must be on cloud nine right about now. First Scarlett Johansson and now Eva Mendes as femme fatales... Sam Jackson as the villain... the head of the Monster Squad as The Spirit (well, technically... since Gabriel Macht is Stephen Macht's son... and Stephen Macht was Sean's dad in MONSTER SQUAD... anybody?)

Eva Mendes will play Sand Saref, the Spirit's ex-flame.

Mendes and Johansson in a Frank Miller movie... good lord... Are there any red-blooded hetero readers that doesn't love how this movie is looking?

Also announced was the hiring of Bill Pope (THE MATRIX, DARKMAN, ARMY OF DARKNESS and SPIDER-MAN 2) as the cinematographer... so we know this'll look amazing. This movie will surely rock, no?

Sure he's getting big names because of the success of Sin City and 300, but what has he done to make those into MOVIES? His comics work has been crap lately, so I'm not sure he'll be making a great movie here. Maybe I'm wrong. I hope I'm wrong, if for nothing other than Will Eisner's immortality.

I'm reading Darwyn Cooke's "The Spirit" and it's great. Very light, and very fun. is it anything like eisner's books? i've never read a single one. I'm a little worried about Frank doing a really super dark Spirit movie (unless of course that's how he's supposed to be) are there any Eisner Spirit books you'd recommend? i'm off to the comic shop later.

    by laserpants

Usually that doesn't bother me in the slightest, but with Eva, it does. I mean, Ghost Rider was already awful, she just made it unbearable. Of course, if she showed her rack, it wouldn't have bugged me, and if I was plowing her from behind, I wouldn't complain about her lack of personality, but in a moviefilm that I'm supposed to enjoy? Theres gotta be more talented trim to poke, Frank.

Charlie-I believe DC has put out a few Archive editions of the Eisner Spirit. Also,if you go to a back issue shop, you may find the Kitchen Sink published reprints from the 70's-'80s.The lighthearted approach Cooke takes is only a patch on what Eisner did in his post WWII years with the character.Mr.Carrion in the original was a way more sinister figure than Cooke's reimagining, emblematic of the noir approach Miller is seeking. Some of Eisner's stories barely feature the Spirit at all,but focus on such Twilight Zoneish situations as a guy who can fly or another who can kill by saying,"Drop dead!"Good luck with finding these original stories, they are justified classics.

She is really sexy and has an amazing body, but she is a terrible actor. I'm glad to see that a lot of people here agree with me on this, because I've been feeling for a while like I'm the only one who can see this (judging from the fact that she keeps getting cast in high-profile films and keeps sucking in each of them). I think Eva Mendes is quite hot and she seems pretty cool in interviews. She's got this cute girl-next-doorness steeped in ample Latina curves. Yeah, it works for me.
Anyway, as much as I'm a fan of her looks, I'm not yet sold on her acting ability. She seems a bit... lightweight to me. "Ghost Rider" wasn't much of a vehicle for anyone's acting chops, but she came across as especially wooden. Maybe she'll kick royal ass in Miller's new film and give a nicely nuanced peformance. But I'll need to see it to believe it.
Still, Scarlett Johanssen in a Frank Miller movie? I'm there.
