New Director for LOGAN'S RUN remake... he's a first timer!

Published at:  Aug 21, 2007 2:32:51 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... looks like Warners is finally set to move forward with the remake of LOGAN'S RUN. The script is written by Tim Sexton, who we last saw a script from with CHILDREN OF MEN. They've gone with a first time feature director - Joseph Kosinski - you might remember his take on the "iSpec" - or his commercials that I have below.

There's been a good reason why so many have wanted to remake this classic seventies film - while I love the original - it did differ from the original novel on many levels. This new version is alleged to be low tech and closer to the novel. That'd be a good thing.

As for Kosinski having at the material. He's done good work with his commercial work - and he's been being watched over by David Fincher - so I feel this should be a very interesting and daring debut work - especially with the backbone that Sexton is providing. Here's some of Kosinski's work to check out...

never heard of him before, but that GoW trailer was what made me want to buy an xbox360, so i guess im already a fan.

Surprised to hear its likely to be low-tech as his body of work so far appears to lean towards the ultra-polished future-tech sort of imagery that would work well in Logan's World. still - what do i know, im 30 and on the run...

Always wondered who made that GearsofWar ad

    by doogiehowitzer

Probably the best pairing of video and music I have ever seen - I am a religious PC gamer but almost broke down and bought an xbox after seeing that ad. Glad its coming out for PC finally - with added content and better graphics. Think the visual style he shows in all those pieces will work very well for Logans Run - one of my favorite movies from my early years.

    by gladiator monkey

Wasn't this virtually remade already with Bay's, "The Island"? In principle, I have nothing against remakes and I know full well that Hollywood has always had a history of cannibalizing it's past successes, but this one seems especially unnecessary. I would like to go to the theatre sometime and not already know the entire story of a film from it's previous incarnation(s).

and even though I thought Panic Room sucked I wouldn't write Fincher off completely just yet...

THE IRON GIANT was on a Logan's Run.

    by todd

At the age of 30, most (and this is mainly directed at males) would go though some sort of mid-life crises. Often, people feel that they have not lived to their full potential or not discovered themselves. Or, it could be said, on one’s 30th B-Day, they can “wake up” to their true nature and let them selves out of the cages of conformity their upbringing or society has encased them in.

In either case, this can often lead to violence, rape, murder and ritualized killing. Not always, but sometimes. With THE IRON GIANT, when He woke up to His inward nature He became a weapon. Something that was awesome, terrible and unpredictable. The power to be deemed such a potential unpredictable threat to be to dangerous to allow to exist, so they tried to destroy Him. In essence THE IRON GIANT was on a Logan’s Run. However, because he was not executed, He did get a chance to come to terms with this new chapter of His life, and He did eventually recover – He became predictable, compassionate and chose what He wanted to be.

For the human race, institutional memory is in place to help middle aged people coup with mid-life transitions, without that, you end up with Logan’s Run. – or if the institutional memory is there, but the situation is alien, as is the case with THE IRON GIANT, you too can end up with a type of Logan’s Run. Either way, change should not be feared, but embraced.

Personlly, I'm glad Bryan Singer doesn't get to do this movie. It's be two hours of Logan angstily mooding about thinking about how much he loved Jessica before James Marsden got there. Then the third act would feature an unconscious Logan and Jessica being flown away from a giant CGI wave chasing them across the Outside Worldscape. Guest starring a wildly overacting (but strangely charisma-free) Kevin Spacey in the Ustinov Old Man role. Everyone goes home and pisses on their USUAL SUSPECTS DVDs in protest.

Dunno who this Joseph guy is, but the ads rock, and so should the movie. And as much as I love the 1976 movie, the books ARE better. Sorry!

The Thing That Should Not Be

    by abominable snowcone

Like John Carpenter's Halloween, this is another film that should not be remade or "reimagined" because it CAN'T be better. And if 'a new generation' wants to check it out, they should refer to the 1976 original with Michael York and the hotter-than-hell Jenny Aguiletta (sp). Case in point, Burton's "Apes." So much hype, so much disappointment. Why bother trying to match an original that has achieved and maintained 'classic' status for 30 years?

We can't help them remaking our classics and cherished memories (and fucking them over most of the time), but for the love of God let them get this one right. Not too hip, not too "for the kids" and not too dark, please.
And "Sci-fi Lesbian Nike commercial"... two identical women lying on the same bed in workout gear hardly constitutes lesbianism, does it? I now have this mental image now of Harry pointing at women who happen to be standing next to each other screaming "Lesbians!" like a podperson gone wrong... heh heh.

    Why Choose A Commercial Director?

    by the outlander

When there are so many talented TV directors, that actually know how to work with actors and dialog. This is the problem with Hollywood, style over substance. I liked the computer animation, but it didn't make me think he would be a good choice to direct real actors.

    by skimn

Zodiac was the first movie where he kept his camera acrobatics in check and really focused on the characters and story. I seem to recall that it was one of the higher reviewed movies on rotten tomatoes so far this year. Oh, thats right, critics don't know anything. As far as Logan's Run, I don't get all the love for the original. Calling it a classic and such. The special effects sucked ( ooooh holograms..), the miniature work looked like it done in my Mom's basement, and I was not impressed by the acting talents of Michael York, Jenny Agutter or Richard Jordan. It's prime for a remake that no one but those who remember the original will want to see.

    by immortal_fish

He was the guy that made the Taco Bell commercials. Sure MM underperformed, is considered a commercial flop, and Usher hasn't done anything since -- but I loved the hell out of that movie. But forget about who's in the movie and what it's about. The editing and camera shots were tight, with great performances delivered by all involved. Hell, anyone that can make Michael Bay sound funny and cool deserves a medal. It was a well crafted flick. I see no wrong in giving another commercial director a shot at the big screen.

Next time, Bryan, lay off the coke, learn to drown out the pernicious voices of yr overactive ego, and please do learn to be humble. You essentially walked away from what could have been the greatest superhero trilogy ever, to make a movie that nobody gave a shit about, for an outrageously huge budget, which BOMBED, and which no doubt has the beancounters in Hollywood thinking twice about hiring you for anything ever again. I dug Joseph Kosinski's visual style in those advertsements. He consistently generates a nice blend of action, build-up, and quiet human drama. Most ad directors slam-bam you with brainless and wildly edited ADD bullshit, but Kosinski seems to have a more subtle, slower-moving, and emotional style.
This will all be important if we're to care about Logan and his Run. Good choice, Ron Silver. I'm excited to see where this film goes.

    by half vader

Don't get me wrong, I'm not doing the usual TB thing and going against the grain to be cool. I loved all those other ads. I love Gears (it's coming to the MAC for crying out loud - what was that all the fanboys were saying about exclusivity?!), and I love that version of the song and the original "Mad World". But the ad sucks. The pace of the visuals don't go with the song or use the dichotomy between them well. The juxtaposition sucks. The overhead shot and the monster emerging work well but other than that it doesn't seem a whole lot different from just a cutscene with the music replaced.

If anyone's seen the "Domo-kun" mad world one it's a million times better and actually has a nice sense of pathos! Yeah I know I'm coming off like a prat but it IS the TBs so what the hey...

    by spandau belly

The biggest problem was the script. Michael Bay's direction only destroyed the film's one action sequence, but the rest of the film had terrible structure, too many plotlines, crass humour, radical and rapid shifts in tone, and only unlikeable characters.I think they should just do a remake of Transformers and get James Cameron to do it. Even if he just re-used his script for The Abyss and replaced the aliens with robots I'd see it.

Logan's Run (novel) appears to be out or print...

Anyone know where one could grab a copy of the novel / ebook online (torrent) ??

The sequel was really good, as well. It must be 25 years since I read these books.

    Electonica score please:

    by moomoo

If he keeps it dark and vaguely similar to his Nike commercial, with an electronica score, it could be a great movie. Good movie concept, and we sure don't have a lot of sci-fi these days.

    But can he do dialog?

    by sangredeltoro

Visuals are nice, but like other commercial directors turned theatric, no matter how well the script is done, can they carry a full length movie with actors and actual dialog?
