Tuesday’s Finale Brings Spielberg ON THE LOT!!

Published at:  Aug 21, 2007 3:44:52 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Tonight Steven Spielberg himself is slated to greet the winner of “On The Lot.” Will he do it via satellite, as he greeted the Comic Con audience from the set of “Indiana Jones’ Fourth Movie,” or will he actually take leave of Henry Jones Jr., Marion Ravenwood, Transformer Boy, Fake Marcus Brody et al to join fellow filmmakers Garry Marshall and Carrie Fisher in studio?

Get this. “On The Lot” viewers ejected Zack “Frozen Coathanger Guy” Lipovsky two weeks ago.

The final three contestants are:

1) 31-year-old Will Bingham, the Texas-bred family man who made “Lucky Penny,” “Nerve Endings,” “Spaghetti,” “Unplugged,” “Road Rage 101,” “Glass Eye” and “The Yes Men.”

2) 29-year-old Adam Stein, the Miami-reared editor who made “Dance Man,” “Discovering The Wheels,” “Worldly Possessions,” “Girl Trouble,” “Driving Under The Influence,” “Dough: The Musical” and “Army Guy.”

3) 31-year-old Jason Epperson, the hip-hop Kentucky Christian who never removes his hat. He made “Ghetta Rhoom,” “Blood Born,” “Old Home Boyz,” “The Move,” “Oh, Boy,” “Sweet” and “Eternal Waters.”

I think maybe Epperson was trying to pretend to cry last week.

Will tonight’s hour move faster than the flaccid night of repeats we got last Tuesday?

Will Jason, Adam and Will reunite with Zach, Sam Friedlander, David May, Marty Martin, Mateen Kemet, Andrew Hunt, Shalini Kantayya, Phil Hawkins, Hilary Weisman Graham, Carolina Zorrilla de San Martin, Claudia La Bianca, Shira-Lee Shalit, Trever James, Jess Brillhart, and Kenny Luby?

Will Pete Jones, Efram Potelle, Kyle Rankin, Erica Beeney, Marcus Dunstan, Patrick Melton and John Gulager be on hand to welcome the winner to show business?

8 p.m. Tuesday. Fox.

    by bobo_vision

I haven't seen the show since those first 2 weeks, but that guy really sucked. The worse part was how he created that sketch about a retarded dude, and then lied about it afterwards saying he wasn't retarded. I don't care if you make a film about retarded dudes, but own up to it...either way, it just wasn't funny. If it was a funny sketch about a retarded dude, then different story. Bah!

    Adam Should Win

    by joelseph01

I unfortunately have been watching all summer and I can tell you how terrible many, but not all, these films were. And truly one of the most annoying features was the small cast the directors would choose from - How many times did we need to see Tatyana Ali fuck up another role?

Adam's shown the most ingenuity, not much really, just small sparks of clever writing that may lead to something down the road.

He has the crazy christians on his side. There is no other explanation he is still in the game.
The other 2 have talent, but I think "Spielberg jr." aka "Horseface" aka "SFX Guy" aka "forgot his name" will be the only one who becomes the chance to direct big budget movies in the future.

    by brokentusk

Adriana something-or-other - great to look at, terrible to listen to. It was like she couldn't speak without reading off the teleprompter, she had no honest reactions (Ron Burgundy-style). Also, that GHETTA ROOM sketch was NOT about a retarded guy, I didn't think the guy was retarded the first time I saw it and just because Carrie Fisher (who has no opinions that matter and is still credited on the show as being in STAR WARS and nothing else) was initially offended by it does not mean that the guy was trying to make fun of a retard. The actor just missed the mark on nerdy and went so far overboard that it seemed like he was mentally retarded. I've only ever seen two episodes of this show, but it REALLY sucked - and I watch AMAZING RACE and SURVIVOR every season... this show blew.

I agree Adriana has a future perhaps in softcore. But she was absolutely the wrong choice to host a show about filmmakers. Good gawd, and the pregnant pauses before she announces who goes home, and the missed cue cards... I mean... for a while, she was losing an average of 4 inches of clothing per week while the show was losing 4 decimal points in Nielsen, this went on for weeks..

Please tell me that he's not ACTUALLY playing the Marcus Brody character. We don't really need a Brody-esque character to begin with, but we certainly don't need a re-cast Brody. Perish the thought.

I really enjoyed the pilot and initially hated it when the next episodes were in front of a live audience with voting. But that got a little better as well. The movies made were, in general, fairly enjoyable.

This has to be the only reality show I've ever enjoyed except for the first 2 seasons of Survivor.

The judges and MC aren't any worse than the twits on American Idol.

Although I know it's a long shot, I wish this would be picked up for a 2nd season - but without a studio audience or voting ... or at least do a few episodes in the beginning that way and then leave the last few to audiences.

Spielberg should have resurrected Amazing Stories for cable, like USA or FX. It could showcase short films from people never to be heard from again like William Dear and Phil Joneau ( oh wait, he made Gridiron Gang...oh yea, proved my point ). But he did get Scorcese and Eastwood and DeVito to direct for TV, but then he did the same for Burt Reynolds.....

"The actor just missed the mark on nerdy and went so far overboard that it seemed like he was mentally retarded."

And that's why Jason's a piece of shit director. The job of a director is to keep tabs on an actor's performance. He should have known the actor was off-base with his performance and reined him in. He didn't do that because he wanted the actor to portray a retard. If not, then he's a shit director. Either way, he got caught and tried to lie himself out of it because he's a spineless shitbag.

I really liked this show when it first started.

    by big jim

Almost stopped watching when they went to the American Idol format (actually, I almost died of boredom from the hour-long results show the day after the mind-numbingly dull 2 hour episode). Since then I have been recording them and fast-forwarding through most of the setup and comments about the contestants movies. Pretty much all I have watched are the films (and sometimes let it play to check out the hostess' cleavage).I had hoped that as the show went on, the directors would rise to the challenge and really show us something. Still waiting. No one has stood out (in a good way; Kenny stood out, but in a pretentious film-school hack sort of way). Coat Hanger guy (Zack?) was visually impressive but was not good when it came to getting good performances from his actors. I think if any of these people will have careers after this it will be in commercials. One of the many failures of this show was sticking with the 3 minute film. Doing a feature is very different from doing a short. They should have had them do 3-minute chapters of a longer movie. That way, if you want to find out what is going to happen in someone's movie you have to vote for them so they will be back next week to continue their script. Also, it's been said many times before, they should have all been doing the same script. Or at least, each group of 4 or 6 each week doing the same script. That way the voters aren't voting for their favourite story (which I have no doubt was the bulk of the votes) but for the person that did the best job directing the story. When selecting who is the best director, it is the director's style, not the story he is directing, that is most important. It's like automatically giving the Best Director Academy Award to the director of the film that won Best Picture.

I agree with you that he should have reined the actor in. I haven't watched enough of the show to have an opinion about Jason one way or another, I haven’t even seen any of his other films – all I'm saying is that GHETTA ROOM wasn't actually about a retarded person, just a very socially awkward person. It was his job to make that clearer for the audience (by guiding his actor), and in turn make a better (I didn't think much of GHETTA ROOM), but I didn't watch it at the time and think to myself, "Wow that's so wrong!" like the judges did.

I was a fan in the beginning but soon after quit watching. I think that the show was intentionally vague as for what really went on behind the scenes. Sometimes it would seem like different people each week would have 'more' (i.e. bigger budget) than others.

    by big jim

but it would not surprise me if the producers had favourites. I've always assumed these people were cast as much (if not more) for looking good in front of the camera as being good behind one.The show should have been more like the Apprentice, with a producer who decided who goes home. The contestants would be accountable not only for making a decent film but doing one on buget, being accountable for the finances, etc. Have 2 teams and each week they each make a movie, and the director rotates. The others are responsible for casting, script, finances, etc. The losing team gets called into the producer's office and he decides who is responsible (bad casting, bad directing, mismanaged money, etc) and he's the one who sends each one packing - "You're off the lot!". Hey, it couldn't have been any worse than the AI clone we got.

    by cherryvalance

I missed a week at some point and the dude I liked went home then apparently. And I only saw about half the season. It's funny because once I complained about how bad it was, I started watching it every week. Of the three guys that are left I thought Jason's movies were the best. I don't remember the name of the guy I liked he did that one movie where everything went backwards. Okay I just looked it was Zach.

Anywho Carrie Fisher isn't that bright. That was something I didn't want to learn. Last week when the guys showed their three best movies one of the other two had one that was a complete rip-off of the Twilight Zone episode "Five Characters in Search of an Exit". And she kept going on and on about how original it was. I don't expect her to have seen everything but that was pretty obvious. Her comments week to week were pretty bad too. The show was better if you just listened to the guest director.

How not to do a television show 101.At least when Hell's Kitchen does that build up tease before commercial they use edits and music to build it up (and it's obvious they're going to commercial before they make their reveal). This show instead had dead air. The hostess just stopped talking for 10 seconds before saying they'd reveal the winner after commercial. Maybe they should have first found a decent director for the show before the search for a film director.

    about the grand prize

    by exie

The winner doesn't get a check for a million dollars. He gets a development deal for a million. Most development deals don't guarantee you all the money. There are certain requirements that have to be met.

The cost of his office, his phone, computer etc. gets deducted from that prize among other costs of doing business on the lot.

He also has to actively develop projects and bring them to Dreamworks to see if they want to buy them and pay out on that development deal.

If they constantly pass on his scripts, pitches, ideas, I don't think he's going to collect much of that money at all.

I'm sure he can draw a decent salary from it, but it's not going to be 1 million.

My guess is he'll probably get something like 100 grand for himself as salary for the year he's supposed to be there.

If his ideas don't get to the next level, he'll be out of there by this time next year.

The fact is, no one is going to take this guy seriously. He's essentially a game show winner and people who work "on the lot" will treat him and regard him as such. They'll be nice to him to his face, but they'll tear him to shreds when he leaves the room.

I've been waiting to see if any of the people from the show have gotten snapped up for anything and I haven't seen a word about it.

I think what hurt a lot of these guys are they aren't writers and they are going to find it difficult to make the next step without being able to write a kick ass feature script.

That said, Adam should have won. He and Zack were the most Hollywood ready. I think Will is a nice dude, but I think he's going to be a little cowed by this whole experience and if he doesn't have the chops to write or develop good material with good writers, he's doomed.

    by antonphd

My picks were always Adam, Zack and Will in that order. The reason being that they all seemed like they had real potential, were open to learn from the professionals on the dreamworks lot and none seemed like a jackass. the winner really just won a foot in the door after which they have to make their own way. i'm glad that Will seems like a humble guy and he has a chance to actually make something of his year there. jason on the other hand... wow... did the internet votes actually break or did someone with a brain say 'no fucking way this dipshit is going to come on my lot'.

    by sifodyasjr.

Something felt really off about it--like the way he was generically praising Will's films, then it dawned on me--they pre-taped all of the final 4 or 5 contestants 'winning' and slapped the actual winner onto the end of the show. On the Lot's concept was good, but the execution was a colossal disaster.

This was the worst attempt at an amateur-filmmaking contest ever. Week to week weak criticisms and the most retread scripts. Why is there no respect for that craft? I haven't watched in weeks. I thought that kid Zach was a shoe-in, then I catch it one week only to find he wasn't in the top 5? What the hell, he was the only one I would give any money to. Did Spielburg actually show up?

Not taking Will Seriously Because he won a game show??

Yeah, I guess he should've gotten a Hollywood job the "right" way (i.e. nepotism, or sleeping around).

There's a lot of writers and directors working in Hollywood today who didn't get a job out of nepotism or sleeping around. I know this for a fact, since my Uncle's sold cars and fabric and if I could have fucked someone to move my career ahead sooner, I would have, but I don't think that would have helped my career and only served to hinder it. Will is a contest winner. People in Dreamworks who run into him every day will laugh at him. Not to his face. Behind his back. It's Hollywood after all. I don't look at his win as anything impressive since there were clearly more talented contestants. I have a feeling that Jason was the real votes winner and the shows Producers would rather bend the rules than let that joke win. I think Will has a long road to get a feature made and if you asked anyone in Hollywood right now if they think this guy is going to helm a feature because of this deal from winning the show, I think most people in the industry would tell you, "not a chance". I hope he has a great script he's been sitting on and he proves me wrong, but he didn't come off as a particularly talented writer (or director for that matter). That "Yes Men" short he got pats on the back for was awful. The premise wasn't even ludicrous in a truly funny way. It played more like a bad superbowl commercial than a feature film.

Probably a little too late, but...
aintitcool.com/node/33198 is why OTL deserved every single one of its almost-comical-but-really-sad pratfalls in its 13 week fumble parade. Yeah, I'm biased.

wow, how 'bout a way to scrap an entire season...

... and get Spielberg to come on it and give shitty advice to potentially good future directors... Don't get me wrong, the S-man has done wonders in is prime, but lately, he's directed the crappiest films I've ever seen... War of the world; full of the most idiotic things you can have in a movie, A minvan that works when no one else has a cellunoid; teen that survives an explosion that levels the army in an instant; a minivan (the same) that doesn't get a scratch when a plane levels a neigborhood; a mechanic who has the brilliant idea to stuff grenades in the belly of the alien contraption when army men didn't think of it before... and on and on ..; then AI; Jurrassic Park 2 and 3... Ok he's done good with Catch me if you can, Munich and the Terminal but still is mishaps were way big.I was hoping for people who actually like new direction to future movies to be on the panel, and it wasn't so.THe show should've asked new and inovative directors to comment, hell even forget about directors and just get producers, they're the ones who they have to work with.On the lot, wasn't a great show, but it did show us a few "could be good" directors for the future.Hell.. I just don't like Spielberg anymore, he's gone to the "safe" side of the business instead of finding those new and innovative movies he could actually do with the talent he has in his little finger. To bad he doesn't uses it anymore...
