David Koepp to take first shot at SPIDER-MAN script
According to this morning's Hollywood Reporter it seems that oft-genre film related screenwriter David Koepp will be the first (of what I predict to be many) screenwriter(s) to weave a draft of the SPIDER-MAN script. According to the article, the plan is to draw upon Cameron's scriptment... but really... who knows how close it'll be right? Sony also said according to THR that several top helmers have expressed interest in this project.
Now I'm positive that in TALK BACK below everyone will have their own specific opinions on who should direct this film. (Not to mention what I imagine will be a strongly negative anti-Koepp sentiment) Well... Cause I can... I'm going to put up my weirdo opinion of who should direct SPIDER-MAN.
The first choice I have would be amazing in my opinion. And I truly think he could make not only a great SPIDER-MAN movie, but a GREAT movie out of this character.. and that's Martin Scorsese... WHAT!?!?!?!
Well, ya see... it's like this. We all know he has the skills to make the film, but what makes me feel he is absolutely perfect for the movie is his personal background. Who Martin Scorsese is and was. You see... Marty grew up in SPIDER-MAN's neighborhood. He was the scrawny puny Parker growing up, trying to find the right group to be a part of. Always a bit concerned about the good groups and the bad ones. He dealt with his Flash's... He had his camera, and he escaped through church and the local movie theater... the two places he felt safe. Now... I'm willing to bet that ol Scorsese could postulate real real good... what motivates Parker. Now I don't know this, but I'd be willing to bet that when Parker was a kid and his Aunt and Uncle took him to the flickers he saw Errol Flynn, Tyrone Power, Douglas Fairbanks Jr, etc. And when he got those powers of his... that's where the cockiness and spirit of adventure came from... but he still had all those teenage doubts.
Plus... Imagine if they set this as a period piece in the early sixties New York.... The New York that Ditko drew, the New York that Scorsese knows so well. It'd be fantastic, it could be soooooo much more layered than just a 'comic book movie'. I know... I know... it's a wet dream of a obese Texas fanboy... but dammit... I know damn good and well he'd make a great film out of it, and it'd be something we'd never have seen from him. A Scorsese adventure film... his Fairbanks movie, his Flynn... Ahhhhh... to dream of what could be in an idyllic universe.
However, if ya just want visceral coolness George Miller or the Wachowski Bros. wouldn't be tooooo awful. And I've heard rumors that Sam Raimi loves the comic book.... he'd rock. :) But... Gosh SCORSESE would be soooooo cool. I mean... who the hell thought that Mario Puzo would write the first SUPERMAN movie? Right?

HE MAKES THE BEST FUCKING FILMS!!!
HE MAKES THE BEST FUCKING FILMS!!!
IF I EVER MEET HIM...
Sorry, I don't know what got into me. I've seen a million different takes on who should and should not write and direct Spider-Man, but I never saw anyone bring up Martin Scorcese. Not a bad idea. Now we all know Sony handing this franchise over to him will happen like NEVER, but it's still fun to imagine what his version of Spidey would look like. And besides, wouldn't it be great to see DeNiro as one of the villains? He's playing Fearless Leader right now, so why wouldn't he do this? Alright, time for a reality check. My main take on Spider-Man is that it sucks that Cameron ain't doing it since his scriptment kicked some serious ass, but now that he's backed out I just hope Sony doesn't hand it over to the Devil and Limpdick and let them piss away a goldmine like they did with Sh!tzilla. Be smart, Sony. Just because WB is content to let Jon(Chuck Daly Clone) Peters ruin all their biggest franchises doesn't mean you have to make the same mistake. -
I totally agree with your director choice, Harry. If you read Easy Riders, Raging Bulls by Peter Biskind it talks a lot about Scorsese's upbringing and his manners and outlook on life. He would make an excellent choice. Peter Parker is more important than Spider-Man is. Remember, Spider-Man was written at a time when superheroes in comics were impossible to relate to, and Stan Lee created a sort of Everyman hero. Well done, Harry.
-
I was thinking the same thing.
Marty would be great. DePalma
proved with Mission Impossible he can do Spidey action, and what style! Coppola could be really good too. Outsiders, Dracula anyone? As long as ILM does the action shots/fighting.
But most of all, I wish Lucas would just buy Marvel & start cranking out Marvel movies under LucasFilm.
I still hope Cameron makes it, but
these other choices would make me happy. Really a good Spidey movie should be made & then he should go straight into a big budget TV series. Comics are monthly & would work best on a weekly TV basis.
A movie every three years doesn't work out.

Renny Harlin should direct SPIDER-MAN. He is a great action director. Just look at CLIFFHANGER and DIE HARD 2. If and when DEEP BLUE SEA becomes a BLOCKBUSTER (I know this film is going to be a KICK ASS thrill ride), I hope Harlin persues (sp) the Spider-Man project.
-
The villian had benn be Green Goblin. If Emmerich and Devlin get this I WILL kill someone.
-
I almost forgot the Wachowski Brothers. They, along with Harlin, would make a KICK ASS Spider-Man movie. The Matrix ROCKED!!!
-
Koepp - Bad move. This is the man behind some of the worst scripts in Hollywood. His level of hackdom knows no bounds, from the Shadow to Jurassic Park, he's overpaid on the level of Joe Eszterhas.
Scorsese. Grew in in Spiderman's Neighborhood? What are you, nuts?! Parker grew up in Forest Hills, Queens - Then a jewish/upper working-class suburb. Marty grew up in SoHo, an italian immigrants' son. You Texans got to take a course in NYC geography. Harry, come on down and I'll show you around. I mean it.
-
Spidey was made for Hong Kong style action. Why not hire the Master? (The Wachowskis would be a decent substitute)
-
I strongly disagree with ABKing about Renny Harlin directing the Spiderman movie. Harlin is a third rate talent, a real hack. He would only make a passable action movie with no character and the lamest lowest common denominator style. I think he and that worthless Micheal Bay should be banned from ANY consideration by Sony. The idea of Marty S. directing is very interesting. I never would have thought of it. It would certainly have better characterization and heart. I would also recommend directors Stephen Hopkins (Predator 2, Ghost and the Darkness) or John Mctiernan.
-
I think commercial director Donovan Boden would make a surprise hit. His classy style and story sense would be perfect...
-
Harnock wrote the Wonder Woman treatment that Reitman initially had. Now there's a combo!
-
IF Scorsese were to make the SPIDER-MAN film, DeNiro would have to play Man-Mountain Marko! (Renny Harlin?!! What the fuck?)
-
...You suggest Martin Scorcese for the director of Spider-Man. Not that it ain't a cool idea, it most certainly is- In fantasyland. Scorcese, if you look at his track record, doesn't appear to be someone willing to jump on the men-in-tights bandwagon. Suggest all you want. I'd like to walk on Mars without a spacesuit too. Also, just because everybody digged The Matrix over the weekend does NOT mean the Wachowskis are the right choice either. Jeez. Talk about bandwagons now! We all know who gets the coveted job; the guy that promises the biggest bang for the lowest buck. Sony needs a hit, but more importantly they need a low-budgeted hit. They blew the bank on Godzilla. They can't just promise the money willy-nilly (I've always wanted to use that term!) in the face of the lack of Big Lizard Revenue. Why do you think they wanted Spidey in the first place? To pull themselves up, not necessarily to keep them there. Finally, Koepp is not so bad and, for Heaven's sake, it's only a spec script. Do you know how many of these babies are gonna be out there, how many tried and true writers alongside neophytes are gonna weigh in with their personal vision of the web-slinger? Maybe, after what looks to be a major disappointment in Wild Wild West, they'll consider Barry Sonnenfeld. Y'all happy now?
-
I acutally like the Scorsese idea, but in more down to earth terms-
John Woo- can do action, humour, conflict, and could really bring out the whole question of redemption that fuels Spidey.
Kevin Smith- Comics fan, comics writer, could work the humour.
Wim Wenders- okay, so it would be a 3 and a half hour mediation on the beauty of city from the pov of a web slinger, but the soundtrack would be great.
Renny Harlin- a maybe. Die Hard 2 was a fun movie, he directs the whole underdog well, and what is Spidey but the ultimate underdog- not counting Underdog, himself. The flick he did with Geena (Long Kiss Goodbye?) while not perect, was a decent enough flick with some good character work.
WHo not?
Not the Wac brothers- A Spidey film should not put you to sleep or imagine Mary Jane making out with Aunt May
Tim Burton- Anyone who has Bat Man killing indiscriminatley- which he does in both of the Burton films, should be kept as far away from Spidey as possible.

Whoever directs this film I hope they will do it the justice it deserves. One thing, NO VENOM. I read a poll somewhere that reflected Venom as the #1 choice of villans for this flick. What is wrong with people? The Green Goblin is Spideys main foe. It would be great to see somebody good play him, don't ask me why but Patrick Swayse comes to mind, kinda like his role in Point Break. Anyone have any thoughts?
-
MagykElf, Renny Harlin a hach??? I THINK NOT!!! He is one of the GREATEST action directors around. I guess you didn't see CLIFFHANGER and DIE HARD 2 (two kick ass action films). Even THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT was cool. Just because he directed the mega flop CUTTHROAT ISLAND doesn't mean shit. Every director makes a few mistakes. The DEEP BLUE SEA trailers look awesome (I love the "amazing grace" song that starts the trailer off and then it switches to the "Aliens" theme music) and I'm sure the movie will be a first rate thrill ride. MagykElf, I know something is seriously wrong with you when you can suggest a HACK like Stephen Hopkins to direct something as ambitious as SPIDER-MAN. I mean come on, Hopkins directed Predator 2, Blown Away and Deep Rising. He is a REAL HACK. Give Spider-Man to a real master of action and suspence. Namely, RENNY HARLIN...
-
First, this idea's clearly a fantasy, since there's no way a huge studio is going to hand over a potentially huge franchise to an relatively uncommercial (but still GREAT). But even if Scorsese was offered the job, why should he not accept? Because he's arguably our greatest living director, and I personally would rather he made a another personal, uncompromising masterpiece than spend time on some comic book movie. Secondly, Scorsese makes movies for adults (has he ever not had an R rating?) and like it or not, Sony is not looking for an adults-only audience with this film. Next, I've read interviews before with Scorsese, and he has a pretty big aversion to doing a special effects-heavy movie. It's not that he doesn't like special effects films; he just said in a goodnatured way that he doesn't think he could deal with all those aspects and problems. And lastly, can you imagine the pressure and idiotic "advice" the studio would throw at him? They would hardly be "hands-off" which is what Scorsese would need to create a vision all of his own. In fact, the only way he could achieve that kind of autonomy with this kind of a budget would be if he dropped off the face of the earth for 10-20 years like Malick and Kubrick did and then had everyone begging to have him back.
-
A message on the Script-o-rama site says he'll be updating tomorrow (4/6)! It's about friggin' time! (and Yay!)
-
Sam Raimi would be fun, but would anybody take a Spiderman movie seriously with his name associated with it?
-
I look forward to reading the script by David Koepp. True, he was responsible for JURASSIC PARK, THE SHADOW, and THE LOST WORLD, but he also wrote CARLITO'S WAY (in my humble opinion, Pacino's best since SCARFACE), and the underrated TRIGGER EFFECT.
-
Why is it anytime anyone makes a great, original movie that geeks want them to go and make unoriginal movies? What is that? Why are people HAPPY that the people who made the Usual Suspects are making an X-Men movie? I mean, I remember Pleasantville reviews on this site that wanted Gary Ross's next film to be SUPERMAN. Scorcese? That's just SICK. Hey, I read comics. I read a bunch a month. But a comic experience is complete unto itself, if its any good. I don't NEED to see some movie if the comic's satisfying- when I see a movie, I want something new. Why are people happy to think of talent wasting its time? I mean, why did Stanley Kubrick matter so damn much? Because each movie he made only he could have really made, and now he's gone and there won't be another. And that applies to EVERYONE. And you want Spiderman, and you pretend you care about movies? You make me sad.
-
Bundren says that Scorsese only makes films for adults -- supposedly proving this by asking if he had ever made a non-R-rated film. For one thing, he's made at least three like that: Kundun, The Last Waltz, and The Age of Innocence. But more importantly, is that your definition of a film for adults...that it's R-rated? And, as long as we're talking about Scorsese films, near-continuous vulgarity and profound brutality. I certainly don't question his adultness or intelligence, but I do think it's very sad that a movie can't be for adults if it's not rated R.
-
And how about Christopher Walken as the Vulture and Kevin Spacey as Doc Octopus? I'd pay a dollar for that.
-
I've got three words for you: The Farrelly Brothers.
-
Please, for the love of Christ,
whomever writes the script, SKIP
THE ORIGIN OF SPIDERMAN!
We all know how Peter Parker became Spiderman, just like we all knew how Bruce Wayne became Batman!
It's a waste of time! Just get right into a good story! If we have to see the origin we're going to have wait until the sequel to see a good film.
In fact, just skip the whole original thought process. Just take a poll here on AICN for the best Spiderman story ever read in the books and translate that to the screen. That's what should have been with the Dark Knight and the Batman films! Same goes for the upcoming Fantastic Four and Superman films.
I'm tired of this nonsense! -
Mario Puzo only wrote the initial story for SUPERMAN. It was then worked on by David & Leslie Newman, Robert Benton and Tom Mankiewicz (uncredited).
-
Scorsese would be an interesting choice, but there is no way it would happen; Scorsese has never in his 25+ years of filmmaking had a real commercial hit, and hell will freeze over before Sony cedes control to him, no matter how brilliant he is, and how much he can identify with Parker. I would also much rather see another film along the lines of Raging Bull, Goodfellas, or Kundun by Scorsese than have him pour 2+ years of his life trying to bring his vision of a comic book onto the big screen. Other directors?
Wachowski Bros: Hate to agree with almost everyone here, but they ARE comic book writers, and have made 2 of the most stylish films in the past 5 years.
Alex Proyas: One idea I thought might be interesting. Hes's pretty talented, but don't know if he's cut out for this flick.
Wes Anderson: His work on Rushmore did a great job of capturing the growing pains of a teenage boy, and he has a certain offbeat style that might go well with this. Don't know if he can do action well though.
Todd Solondz: j/k. He can do the teen angst thing well, though.
-
Didn't Cameron have Sandman and Electro for the villians. Hopefully, they'll start from scratch. The Goblin will always be SpiderMan's No.1 foe - and should be in the first movie. How about Liev Schreiber(Cotton from shitty Scream movies) as Harry Osborne.
Spiderman(and Batman) has the best Rogues Gallery, so there's so much potential here if they do it right. -
but I don't think he will do it because it will be called Marvel's Spider Man, and not John Carpenter's Spider Man.
-
Robert Rodriguez. He's got a comic book sensibility and a great wit. Spidey should be FUN and not morose and violent. Spidey is the most human/normal of superheroes so the film should be enjoyable. Barry Sonnenfeld wasn't that bad of a suggestion. Scorsese as director? Hah!! Hey, DeNiro would be a great J. Jonah Jameson (Denis Farina would be too).
-
People, please. What is all this optimism I'm reading? This movie will stink. It doesn't matter who directs it, it doesn't matter who writes it, it doesn't matter who stars in it. They will screw up everything that makes Spidey great, I assure you. They'll forget the message of "with great power comes great responsibility." They'll ignore the power of Gwen Stacy's death. Stan Lee will get his claws into this movie and make it just as terrible as The Punisher, Captain America, etc., etc. It's just not possible that Sony will allow a single vision to be put to film. A hundred different suits, all trying to justify their jobs, will pull and tug on this movie until it's an over-stylized, over written, under characterized, tag-line merchandizing extravaganza like that suck-fest Batman and Robin. These are the people who thought "organic web spinners" in Peter's arms were a great idea. Sorry folks, but dump your stock in Marvel properties (X-Men will suck, too), and buy up Lord of the Rings. At least it has a chance.
-
Harry, good pick. It never occured to me to use the master. His background is definitely in line with Parker's. My head was swimming with action directors. John Carpenter's also not a bad idea...look at "Big Trouble in Little China"...I know I'll get a lot of flak, but I think Joe Johnston would be pretty good. "The Rocketeer" and "Jumanji" show he can do action with heart. Some of the other suggestions here are a bit too dark...Proyas!?!
Anyone but Emmerich and Devlin!
As for plot...I say follow the recent comic revamping's lead: Combine Spidey's and Doc Ock's creation. Both would get their powers from the same lab accident. Plus Dock Ock is THE ultimate Spidey villain. NO VENOM!!! Stick to the old school villains. Venom shouldn't even rear his ugly head 'till about the seventh film...if at all. -
Another thing...
people who are bitching about Scorsese not being right: you are WRONG. Granted, Sony wouldn't give it to him, nor would he accept, but his childhood suggests a perfect match. Marty has proven he can do different genre films...look at the highly under-rated "Age of Innocence," one of his finest films. Look at my user name...I am the BIGGEST Spidey geek - er- fan. Oh well, the point is moot. It'll never happen. -
Wouldnt it be cool if everyone directed his/her own SPIDERMAN? I want a script written and given to all the leading directors to all the different visions of the same story. We could have a technically brilliant SPIDERMAn by scorsese, an awesome FX spiderman by Cameron, and oh-my-god-look-at-that spiderman by Spielberg, a talky motherfuckin badass spidermna by tarantino, a lame-ass typical action flick spiderman by scott or harlin, a beautifully photgraphed spiderman by malick, an ensemble piece spiderman by altman, an animated spiderman by pixar, a look-at-me-im-a-movie-star spiderman by costner, and a godly spiderman by kubrick.
-
i can picture it now: peter parker, sweaty, teeth clenched, as he fights his self-loathing ( while clutching a cross)...the goblin, sweaty, teeth clenched, as he fights his self-loathing (while clutching a broom)...dizzying camera angles with no point of view...tom cruise as siderman; deniro as the goblin...then i wake up and realize it's been a terrible dream...SAM RAIMI is the only dude out there who could pull it off...scorcese? the most overrated director in america? he knows anti-heroes--not heroes....
-
I am forty years to the day younger then scorsese
-
Martin Scorsese directing Spider-Man is a wonderful idea. If we are looking at auteurs though, I wouldn't mind Spike Lee tackling this project. His New York always has the look of pastels in sunshine and matches perfectly the bright and colorful world of comic books. I like the idea of a director of Scorsese's standing helming a picture like Spider-Man. And it never hurts the artistic crowd to do a commerical movie once in a great while. It could give extra clout and bankability to a career and maybe the director could even create a classic of the genre.
-
...Spacey as Doc Ock? Hmmm...How about Spacey as Norman Osborne?
-
Firstly - I really think I'm leaning toward Sam Raimi. And the W Bros. Matrix is the best eye candy yet. But, who the hell am I? I say we start a pool - with catergories for writer/director/leads/release date. It would fun, and possibly profitable. We can all talk about it til the cows come home, but unless one of our posters is exec. we probably won't know until everyone else does.
Lane - I am laughing. Laughing and laughing. But, what do I know. According to that twit - I am the cause of the ruination of America. (You know, because I'm a WOMAN.) And Harry - did the article say when the first draft would be due? Or expected? I wonder how long this is going to drag on. -

Look, whether or not Harry's suggestion was GEOGRAPHICALLY corre
by dennis
You have to admit, it's a brilliant one. I have always favored the idea of setting comic-to-film projects as period pieces. Whether or not they grew up in the same neighborhood, he can still obviously relate to the character of Peter Parker. It would be a different take on the typical comic book filmfare, to be sure, and maybe open a door to a whole new take on the genre, instead of limiting these film adaptations to simply "slam-bang special effects action extravaganza" status. I give Harry two thumbs up for using his brain, instead of making the obvious suggestions of Harlin, Cameron and even the Wachowski (sp?) Brothers. My other suggestion is letting he Coen Brothers do Superman set in the 40s/50s, but that will never happen. Harry's on the right track, though, give it to someone with IMAGINATION. That screenwriter sounds like another story, though. At least they may trash the Cameron script that deviates from the story with his bio-web spinners, and the Electro/Kingpin amalgam. In short, Spidey, Green Goblin, death of Gwen Stacy. Great dramatic elements, great film material.
-
But it's still a better suggestion than some of the crapy flying around here. I figure they can go two ways with this: 1)A well written, character driven film focusing on a REAL story, or 2) A clever script, with WB twenty-somethings filled will Matrix-style special effects. Actually, I'd probably be happy with both, but I just want Sony to have some balls and try something different for a change. If it works, they could reinvent the genre...who knows?
-
Let Tony Scott direct this film, it would be the most hard hitting kick ass film of all time.
-
Geez, Angel of Death, you seem kind of pissy. Did you sit on your sycthe the wrong way or something? Bend over, extract it from your ass (be careful of the blade, those things are sharp), and accept that Lane is either mildly obnoxious, irreverent, or wrong. And none of those are capital crimes. You, on the other hand, seem to be trying to be a fucking prick who has nothing to do with the conversation, and wrong (you got one thing like Lane, I guess 1 out of 3 ain't bad.). Now, on to Spidey. I'm a bit apprehensive about this. Spiderman is the perfect hero for us...a geek who suddenly becomes everything he wanted to be, and finds that it's not all it cracked up to be...but if it's not done right, it'll be a pitiful turd that we'll try to scrape off of our shoes before it spreads. I'm not sure about any of the directors (for this or X-Men). I think it might be that it's impossible to get a real nuanced comic book into a two hour movie. Both X-Men and Spiderman are over (what is it, it's been a couple years since I've read) 400 or 500 issues now...that's a bit of ground to cover. I'm not sure they can do it justice. Blade worked (for some people, I thought it was dumb, but I probably just wasn't in the mood for it) because the entire plot is kill vampires. The X-Men and Spidey are fairly complex characters...I'll probably see the movies (and that's why they're going to be made), but I think they'll be disappointing...I hope not...but I'm afraid that's how it'll end up.
-
Read closely and memorize: R. LEE ERMEY as J. JONAH JAMESON!!! (That's the D.I. in FULL METAL JACKET for you young'uns.)
-
I share Loki's "cautious pessimism" about the SpiderMan project. Spidey is such a complex undertaking that I can't imagine ANYONE getting it just write. You need a lot of action to keep the audience excited, but you also need the underlying themes of Spider Man to shine through. I think the W. Bros could give the film an interesting take, but somehow I don't think that they're right for the project. Scorcese is pure fanboy, but a little fanboy doesn't hurt anyone, from time to time. But, like I was saying I would be really impressed if ANYONE could do Spidy justice. Wait and See!!!! P.S. I agree Venom should NNNNOOOOTTT be a part of the first film. The villains should be old school and be taken ONE at a time.
-
Proyas. Proyas, Proyas, Proyas. Scorsese? C'mon, wake up and smell yourself. No way he would ever touch this material.
Proyas is the perfect choice.
-
Sorry I generalized about the ratings in Scorcese's canon -- like most parenthetical remarks, my generalization was a small aside, not the be-all-end-all statement on what is "adult". Of course a movie is not required to be R-rated to have adult sensibilities: obviously little kids did not line up for Age of Innocence, Kundun, or The Last Waltz. Scorsese is probably incapable of making a film not intended primarily for adults. So my previous comment still stands: like it or not, Spiderman is not going to be made with adults as its primary target audience. This movie will be about selling toys and fast-food tie-ins first, story and execution second. So the whole idea of Scorsese directing Spiderman is ridiculous.
-
I vote for Woody Allen. I always thought Spidey-sense was typological of Jewish guilt..
-
First, after THE SHADOW, David Koepp is one of the last people I want to see doing a comic book film, let alone Spider-Man. And to hear he's working from Cameron's crappy treatment is even worse. Once more, a decent comic book is about to be turned into a sloppy, crappy film. Yeesh. Why couldn't Sony hire Kevin Smith and John McTiernan to team up on Spidey? Do they really want to join Tim Burton and Jon Peters in the "we love to destroy comic book films" league?
-
How about Terry Gilliam? Wait, Frank Oz and Terry Gilliam together! Spidey could be this cute full-sized muppet in a surreal, 1984-like world. And midgets, lots of midgets...
-
There is no other choice.
-
These are not filmmakers you would normally consider for the Spidey job but I bet they are on a list circulating somewhere in Hollywood as we speak. These people may not be considered action directos but remember that Spidey should be FUN and should, unlike other comic films, have humor and humanity to it. Anyhow, don't kill me over this; they're just ideas: Martin Brest (yeah, he did Meet Joe Crack but he also did Beverly Hills Cop and Midnight Run); Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters); Joe Dante (wasn't he already attached to this at one time?); Ted Demme (The Ref, Life, Beautiful Girls); Richard Donner (I throw myself on the mercy of the court!); The Coen Brothers. And Spielberg. Now you can let me have it.
-
Barry Sonnenfeld? He's taken Men in Black and Wild, Wild West into the right directions... of course Peter Parker will now be played by Will Smith. And who knows, he did Sony a huge profit with Men in Black.. he may be in their minds.
-

I thought of their names and posted them after I realized I said above that the list wasn't really of action directos. 'Course those two are.
-
Harry has it right on the dot! By God, does he have it! A Spidey flick set in the Ditko sixties. Hoo-wah! I can only imagine. Imagine DeNiro as Dr. Octopus. I'm willing to bet he could handle it. I'd choose Scorsese to direct over Cameron any day. Scorsese! Good Lord! How can I say any more?!
-
For that commentator who mentioned that Proyas is too dark...what the hell? There is no other way to play a movie with Spidey...Slap a man in tights and make it a light-hearted summer actioner and you get Superman...(sorry Superman fans, it may have been cool at the time, but seeing Christopher Reeves nowadays in that spandex frightens me) If made with a bit of a darker edge, you could get something very cool like Batman (the Burton ones, thank you very much, let Schumacher die, and let it be soon and slow). You need a director who can create a world in which a superhero can jump around and swing in the air without looking mind-numbingly cheesy. If anyone has doubts about Proyas' ability to create just about whatever the vision he wants, I advise you to rewatch Dark City (and for those who haven't seen it, shame on you. Go forth and rent.) If they do get a top-name action director, my votes would go to McTiernan or Tony Scott. But, as with X-men, my worry about Spiderman is not as much with the director but the costume design. It will be difficult to pull of Spidey's look on film without it looking like an overgrown trick-or-treater. God be with those who have this in their hands.
-
Everyone who keeps suggesting Kevin Smith seems to forget that he lacks the talent God gave a thumbtack. And if you go back and read the actual script, The Shadow could have been a decent film.

You are all very right, but has anyone thought about Redford? Ok, maybe not Redford, but at least Ron Howard. What if Ron Howard and Rob Reiner got together and made it kind of an inspirational "Cocoon" type movie?
They could bring in the cast from the old Electric Company and well.... Ok, Quentin Tarantino and Tom Hanks... -
Nice idea, Harry, but it aint gonna happen. You should read the new paperback "Interviews" and see why it'll never happen. I think Kevin Smith can write a witty and winning screenplay( Spidey has to spout terrible, smart-ass jokes when fighting the bad guys). As director, I can only think of Cameron (director only), Raimi, or Gilliam.
-
I love Harry's idea. Very cool and - unfortunately - very unlikely. I also love the idea of Raimi or the Matrix bros. But how about Mr. Robocop and Starship Troopers? I think Paul Verhoeven would put together a very entertaining package. I also wouldn't mind seeing good old Nicholas Meyer take a swing at the script and at directing.

Film: Spiderman
Director: Scorsese
Second Choice: Brian De Palma
Plot: The Kingpin and Doctor Octopus hold New York City ransom for a billion dollars. However, after kingpin collects the money, he leaves the city because Doc Oct wants to blow up New York City for real. Only one man can save the city... (obviously based on an old Spiderman plot).
Scorsese is perfect. He understands New York, and he understands guilt, two extremely important aspects to any Spiderman project.
And for all of you "Scorsese must remain true to his heart" fans out there, lets be honest. He isn't always responsible for the genesis of his projects. And true Scorsese fans would be willing to watch nearly anything that he makes, whether a remake of "Singing in the Rain," or a Snuggles commercial.
And Angel, Spiderman is an anti-hero.
As for everyone else, "Yecch!"
In any case, if you really must rant and rave about something, consider MY choice to play Spiderman, Tobey Maguire.
And I repeat, "Yecch!" -
Just for the record...I beleive I was the FIRST to declare Scorsese the "man for the job" regarding the SPIDERMAN film.
If it is possible to check the backlog of "Talk Back" files, I invite you to do so and you will find that on the eve of the big court settlement news I wrote that Marty was my first choice to direct this film.
For the record, I have ALWAYS felt that he should tackle BATMAN...but that's another story. (AND another comicbook publisher...)
Rally around Scorsese everyone!! -
I'LL DIRECT IT! ME! I'LL WRITE THE SCRIPT TOO! I've been reading Spidey comics my whole life! I'm PERFECT! My name is even PETER! WHAT MORE COULD ANYONE ASK?!?! -peteski@spinninghead.com

I agree that he shouldn't be in the first movie, he wouldn't be a good intro. But, if the series continues, I would like to him at some point(4th movie or so). I thought he was an interesting villian, and would like to see him on screen at some point. Also, carnage would be nice, but that would be so long distance(like 13th movie or so) the series probably won't last that long so its a mute point.
Anyway, for the first movie, I would like either green goblin or doctor octopus. Really cant decide which. I did hear that someones script did electro and sandman, but I hope not. Not only did both villians suck, but the idea of a 2-villian formula is terrible. Just look what it did to batman. Keep down to one villian, Sony! -
Any established action director is going to impose their same old bag of tricks on this movie and make it blah. You have to give it to someone who has interesting ideas, their own worldview, has rarely if ever had a big budget or effects, and can make a big impression because no one knows what to expect. Mel Brooks was smart enough to trust David Lynch with THE ELEPHANT MAN;, love it or hate it, someone at WB knew the mad genius of Tim Burton for BATMAN. I would agree Kevin Smith would fit perfectly in this theory. Someone else was wise enough to suggest Todd Solondz (even though he'd probably never do it), and Wes Anderson (it's so crazy it could work!). I just don't think Sam Raimi wants to do Spidey-type stuff anymore, so I can't really consider him.
At the risk of political incorrectness, I think that it may lend an interesting spin to the theme of Peter Parker's alienation and difference if a gay director or writer is brought in. Easy, I don't mean make Spidey gay, just use a gay talent. And not some boy-body worshipper like Satan's son Joel Schumacher, but someone with real insight. After all, Bryan Singer has been entrusted with X-MEN. Maybe Andrew Fleming (who proved he can depict straight teens in THE CRAFT and DICK), or Gregg Araki (who can handle angst and effects in NOWHERE), or Matthew Bright (FREEWAY rocks!), or Don Roos (can do funny in OPPOSITE OF SEX, can do scary in SINGLE WHITE FEMALE).
Why didn't I think of this before? Good knowledge of teens and angst, sharp dialogue, solid writing record, and gay? KEVIN WILLIAMSON! Look, the SCREAM movies rock, DAWSON'S CREEK is cool. Give him the keys to the car; I'll ride with him. -
I forgot, for a villain, and a first time Spidey, he needs someone who's going to mess with Peter's already shaky sense of reality and self-image. MYSTERIO!
-
Okay, let's talk about SpiderMan's Directors. C'mon, people, Martin Scorcese? What you want, Robert de Niro as Parker? Look, we need someone that know about comics, someone who like comics. The best choice is Jim Mcbride ( you saw "Breatlhes"?). Anyway, Tony Scott would be a very good choice, but not so good like Robert Rodrigues. "Desperado" looks like a big comic book of Punisher or something like that, and he can be a good job. Kevin Smith could be the Scripter, but not the director. Anyway, if you want to know, yesterday (05/04/99) i was watching the News Daily of Enterteinament Television, and they said that James Cameron will be STARTING to film SpiderMan very soon. And cry, people. His choice for Peter Parker: Leonardo di Caprio ( please God, don't let him accept!)

Stop harping on Smith...wait till Dogma comes out, you'll all se

While I don't have much respect for his direction, I think he's an excellent writer. I didn't care for his treatment of Superman Lives, but I think he could put together a great Daredevil script. I'm for his penning DD, with Matt Damon as Murdoch and Affleck as Bullseye. I think they're all very talented guys, and I bet Affleck could do a great job playing against type as the assassin. I'll probably get flamed, but who cares...
-
No, I don't want Nick Meyer writing and directing SPIDER-MAN...I want him writing and directing SUPERMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!! Make it big and bright and cheerful, just like the past interpretations of the character, and add Meyer's outsized talents, and Superman will be the word again! As for Smith, I don't think his critics are being fair. Yes, his Superman script had flaws in it, but bear in mind that Jon Peters forced him to use some pretty bad uideas. Left to hsi own devices, Smith could do a very good Spider-Man screenplay!
-
I say Brian De Palma would be a better choice, because his background, like Peter Parker's, is in science. De Palma would clearly be able to identify with the character, and he's superb with action and suspense. His films are always concerned with moral dilemmas, so the old "With-great-power-comes-great-responsibility" message would be certain to hit the screen intact. Aside from that, I think Sam Raimi would be just perfect.

I have listened to everybody and I have to say that the Wachowski brothers should direct. For this reason. Matrix is the first action flick I have seen in a long time (possibly forever) that seems to understand that human beings live in 3, count them, 3 dimensions. The actions sequences in Matrix were all three dimensional, with stuff coming from all over the joint. Up, down, left, right, you know? This is essential for Spiderman, who swings around the whole time, bounces off walls and stuff and is basically uncatchable. The scene in Matrix on the roof (sorry if you haven't seen it) is perfect. It looks like a frame out of a comic. One more thing. I know no one will agree but who cares. To me the most interesting villian in Spiderman was Kraven the Hunter. He was an equal, not a wing-nut crazy. I still think tha t any future Batman movie, short of a translation of Dark Knight Returns, should involve Rhas Algoul, Batman's intellectual equal. These two badguys are so involved that they beg to be made into actual thoughtprovoking movie-characters. Don't put Venom in there. I'm sorry but he was never developed well in my opinion and that Harry Brock character was useless. Last note before I end. Comics get characterizations 6 to 7 frames at a time over the course of years, decades even. It is impossible to get that to translate to the screen. So don't. Don't try to tell me why everybody on the screen is the way they are, eating up valuable time. Just let the actors act like them and let the story take up the majority of time. And action, which is still the most important thing in a comic book movie, some mind-blowing action sequences.

Please God keep CAMERON away from spiderman. Otherwise it will turn into nothing more thana big exploding mess with bad dialogue and no story. Here's who I think should be involved.
Director: David Finchner (Seven)
or
Brian Singer (usual s.)
or
Curtis Hanson (L.A. CON)
Writer: Andrew Kevin Walker (Seven)
Spidey: John Cusak(yes he is a little old, but his sense of sarcasim is perfect for Spidey)
or
Edward Norton
Gwen: Sara Polly
Aunt May: Gloria Stewart
J. Jonah Jamison: James Woods
or
Paul Newman
Green Goblin: Kevin Spacey
King Pin: Marlon Brando
or
(Get this) Ving Rames. ( okay stop screaming. Yes I know that Kingpin is white and Rames is black. But remember Mr. Wallace in Pulp Fiction? He would make a great Kingpin.)
-
Yes I hope McTiernan does it with his camera work, sense of action, and the heart in heart in his movies......well.....
Plus Matthew Perry for Peter Parker, he may be a little old but there has never been a closer match !!!!!!!!!!!!
