Janeane Garofalo To Join Cast Of 24!!

Published at:  Aug 20, 2007 10:53:49 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Janeane Garofalo, who was replaced by Mary Lynn Rajskub on “The Larry Sanders Show” more than a decade ago, will be a regular on the upcoming 7th season of “24.”

Rajskub, meanwhile, will continue to play Jack Bauer's fellow CTU vet Chloe O'Brien (even though the new season is said to be CTU-free).

According to TV Guide’s Michael Ausiello, who broke the story, Garofalo will play an FBI agent. (Recall that she played an FBI agent previously in 1998’s excellent “Clay Pigeons.”)

Read all of Ausiello’s report on the matter here.

“24” returns to Fox in January.

    by prof. pop-cult

She was good in Clay Pidgeons. And I could easily imagine her playing a straightforward Fed agent type in 24. If you ignore her personal politics, she has this acting id persona that translates convincingly as a government, non-nonsense type. Thank Agent Scully or Agent Starling with glasses. Frankly, I think she should have been cast as the main lead in the movie version of Whiteout (and not Kate Beckensale).

    by jim jam bongs

Here's what I'm willing to bet: Her character is not at all going to be quirky or off-the-wall. She may not even wear her trademark emo glasses. Her character won't be a traitor or turncoat. She's going to play the kind of character that the Republicans, dittoheads, conservatives, right-wingnuts, Rush Limbaugh will be forced to admit: "I really like the character -- even if I don't personally like the actress who plays her. But she plays the character very well." I believe this is exactly what the producers are going to pull here, and why Garofalo was convinced to do the role (other than for the money, of course).

    by kevinwillis.net

Although I'm not sure I'd want to be in a relationship with her. She accused "Men are from Mars" love guru John Gray of being sexist because he says men and women are different. She's not a liberal, she's a radical leftist. But it sounds like groovy stunt-casting to me, and I'm sure she'll do a great job. However, life keeps me from enjoying 24's highly linear narrative. I can never catch enough of it to have any idea about what's going on.

they took the token Republican and stuck her down in the basement and then gave her one episode before she vanished. Now it will be Janeane Garofalo's turn. Finally a 24 talkback

    by shakes

I've been meaning to bring this up for awhile but didn't have the chance. Last season I heard all the bitching about how the show has gone down hill and just rehashes old plots. I'd seen season 1, and 5 and 6 but that was it. Well this summer I started watching season 2 via netflix, and sure enough, you guys are right. As soon as the disc started there was this realistic-ness and clarity to it. I honestly don't think I would have been able to watch the past two seasons if I would have been so aware of how good things were early on. These newer seasons are like a parody. One thing that doesn't change though is the non-CTU related subplots that suck. Kim with the little girl, the sister who things her sister's soon to be groom is a terrorist, etc.
Oh, and one more thing, it's nice in those early seasons seeing how not everyone at CTU is a data analyst. I'm sure as 9/11 George Tenet wasn't directly looking at lines of code and asking his analysts to set up a work station for him.

    She's a Twat

    by _maltheus_

I just like calling crazy feminist types twats. The rest are ladies. But this news has zero impact on my anticipation for this show. I don't care who plays the parts, I care how they're written. Hearing that it doesn't involve CTU may be good though. They need to do something radical with the show, otherwise this will be this be the finale season officially or unofficially for many here. And if they have to have a mole, make it Chloe. The mole thing is boring, but they might reinvigorate it to make it a old-timer that Jack has always depended on. Alright, I'm talking out my ass here. This show is such a parody of itself that I've long since stopped wishing for it to be quality, I'm now thinking they should "Plan 9" it. Failing that, they should make it more realistic and have Jack snap for all he's been put through. But Bauer is such a little bitch that even after hearing that CTU will be left out of it, I still know that he'll spread his cheeks for them when they eventually crawl out in the third act.

    Season 1
    Season 2
    Season 3
Season 4 or 5 (toss-up... I'll go with 5 by a hair because it didn't involve Marwan and his dastardly escapes) Funny that Season 4 was the first season I started watching.

    24's Political Leanings

    by _maltheus_

It was once a Fox News, pro-torture neo-con type show, but over the last couple of years it became a liberal bitch-fest. That's why some people see it as conservative and some see it as liberal, for lack of better labels. The super-pro-torture years seemed like straight-up military psyops compared to what we have now. I'm guessing that Kiefer got tired of being the poster boy for torture and make it clear that he'd only stay on in these late season if they made the show more Hollywood friendly.

I get that a show can't maintain greatness for ever. Every show has its weak episodes and sometimes weaker seasons. Even Buffy had season 6 problems. What continues to astonish me is how 24, with writers like David Fury and Manny Coto on board, became so bad so fast. I haven't seen a show tank this hard and this fast since Alias season 4 (and even that was prefigured by the mediocre season 3).

What's also disturbing is how widely loathed season 6 was. For example, I thought season 3 was better than season 2 when many other 24 fans hated it. I thought season 5 ran out of steam halfway through, when many other 24 fans loved it to death. But there seems to be near-universal consensus that season 6 was shit.

"this Republican love-fest of a show"

    by smackfu

Uh...what? The past couple of seasons of 24 have been so overtly using the show as a platform for mocking and accusing the Bush administration that it even made me (a canadian liberal) roll my eyes.
    - secret shadow government pulling the presidents strings (Skull & Bones conspiracy theory)
    - said shadow government framing muslims for an orchestrated attack designed to give the US an excuse to attack middle east (common 'Bush/Israel really attacked us' conspiracy theory)
-an inept wartime president also orchestrating a terrorist attack to further his own goals and having it backfire horrible (see above conspiracy)

Seriously, if you think 24 is PRO-republican, you have problems inferring.

    Ruminations

    by fireclown

I used to have a love hate relationship with Gerafalo. It's pretty much gone over to hate since she went insane and all that. This is stunt casting, but that might be what the show needs. I'm thinking she can be herself and be a truther type, denying that there is a terrorist menace while they keep blowing the crap out of things left and right. Kind of a ridiculous greek chorus kind of thing.

    I repeat again

    by emeraldboy

Joel Surnow described himself as Right wing nut job and Has said that while the show is pure entertainment, they have used it as a plat form raise republican issues. Season 6 demonstrates this. The terrorists bring there war to america, the neocon president orchestrates a coup against the Liberal black president and bring martial law to the streets of america.

    24's right-wing side

    by beardo

Even when 24 runs plots that could be perceived as liberal, the series pretty consistently maintains a right-wing feel to it.

    1. Approval of torture
    2. Paranoia
    3. Extremely cynical view of human nature and interaction

All features usually displayed by right-wing art.

Also, look at when 24 does make a liberal viewpoint, such as in season 6 when it turned out the Muslim internees at that camp were really just pissed off guys getting negative info from a website. That was the single worst plotline in 24 history, and I remember both Teri Bauer's amnesia and Kim's nanny troubles. 24 uses things such as oil villains and chicken hawks to good effect, but when the series actually takes a literal liberal standpoint, it crumbles, because the series isn't designed for it.

Also, I wouldn't call 24 a neocon show. Surnow himself says he doesn't believe in nation building, a key neocon trait. I tend to think of it as more of a hard-line conservative type series.

I thought I read that the production was going to be "green" - meaning the trucks and generators would run on biodiesel and everybody would use one sheet of Cheryl Crow toilet paper and other save the planet type of stuff.

    by oisin5199

professionals! It's very clear that there is a mix of political views both behind the scenes and on camera. They can obviously work together and create good drama (last season notwithstanding). I think anyone who can't watch a show because they disagree with the political views of one actor, who will most likely not express those views on the show (re: the whole professionalism thing), is a consummate, simple minded dumbass. Sorry.

24 isn't Right Wing, you're just retarded. Sorry.

    by tallboy66

Must be hard, being stupid and all. With a show that had a sitting Republican President mastermind terrorist attacks on his own country so he could get oil overseas, I wouldn't exactly call it Right Wing. Man, you're dumb. Really dumb. Try thinking slower next time, it'll work.

    24

    by beardo

Thanks Node32774. I'd agree that even the "liberal" plots still play out in a right-wing way. If the average Republican were to find out that Bush masterminded chemical weapons attacks within the country to advance his agenda, they'd probably wanna see Jack Bauer fuck his shit up just as much, if not a lot more, than the average liberal. In 24's world torture and the death penalty are consistently acceptable punishments, and that is very right-wing. That said, there are PLENTY of plots to make liberals happy, too, unlike a show like the dickhead West Wing where everyone to the right of Karl Marx was seen as pure evil.

Why do no-talent people keep getting work in Hollywood?

    by gorrister

She is one of a myriad of so-called 'actors' who have zero acting talent yet keeping finding work. She plays the exact same character in every movie/show she is in: herself. Her act never varies in the slightest.

    by malificus

No, this will be great, they can do wry comedy with Lucy-esque vaudeville thrown in like classic Abbott & Costello bits with the ghost of dead Edgar:
    Chloe:"Who's on first?"
Dead Edgar: "Chloe.....aagghhh" falls over foaming at the mouth while Jack fires his pistol in the air yee-hawing like the Texan on the Simpsons.

    24 Hours of Inconsistency

    by stephenhawkingdiarrhea

I love 24, but I can guarantee that by refreshing the plot is going to last for the first 6 episodes, and then it will revert to the same old formula as the first 6 seasons. The problem is the writers don't plan out the entire season from the beginning and rely too much on fan reaction. The last few seasons have felt jumbled and all over the map because of this. If they did what HBO shows do and what LOST is doing the final 3 seasons, the show would be as rewarding as seasons 2-3.

Janeane is a hypocrite and not as good as we thought...

    by janeane the acerbic goblin

Personally, I think it's really hypocritical of Janeane to do this show, considering she trashed it on AAR. I used to like her, but she's really gone downhill for a while, and she's not really as hip as she thinks she is. She was really rude on her Ratatoutille press tour (check out her Craig Ferguson appearance), and Ratatouille is one of her best films (even though she's not the star of it). I think there may be some talent left there, but 24 ain't gonna bring it out.

    Janeane's lovin' the publicity...

    by janeane the acerbic goblin

Garofalo is doing this role because of the publicity she's getting. She knew people would talk about it, and deep down inside she loves the attention (even though she has said she doesn't like doing interviews). She won't live up to the hype, though. She's a publicity hound. Google Janeane Garofalo interviews. The woman has done more interviews than any other minor celebrity EVER...
