Bell Is Elle!! VERONICA Vet HEROES Hire!!

Published at:  Aug 20, 2007 6:22:11 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

“Veronica Mars” alumna Kristen Bell will appear in several episodes of “Heroes” playing Elle, a woman will ties to Noah Bennet who somehow had something to do with Peter Petrelli’s explosion and will become involved in Claire’s storyline.

Elle is introduced committing a crime, but she may not necessarily be evil.

Bell was also reportedly offered the role of a scientist named Charlotte on “Lost,” but apparently turned that one down.

Read all of Joe Adalian's Variety story on Bell here.

In other casting news, TV Guide’s Michael Ausiello has learned that Ken Leung, who played Uncle Junior’s fellow psych-ward inmate near the end of “The Sopranos,” has been cast as a brainiac mathematician named Russell on “Lost.” He will be introduced in the fourth season premiere, which ABC airs in February.

Read all of Ausiello’s story on Leung here.

“Heroes” returns to NBC Sept. 24.

James has been cast in a recurring/guest star role on the hit CBS one hour drama Without A Trace. He will portray ‘Detective Mars’, who is described as: mid 30s to 40. Attractive in a real way, a bright, full-of-life personality, charming, possibly from around the Washington DC area, so could have a slight southern accent. Mars is a Police Detective who has started to investigate what seems to be a ring of Human Trafficking. He has information our FBI team is interested in and comes to New York to speak to Vivian about what he knows. Eventually he will become part of a task force to deal with Human Trafficking. GUEST STAR, RECURRING ROLE.
On a side note, it's also his birthday. He turns the big 45 today.

seriously, you guys should check out a spike lee showtime movie called sucka free city with anthony mackie and ken leung. he's a tough little bastard in that movie, maybe even crazier than the dude he played on sopranos. and he was also pretty good in Saw... at least better than whiny Whanell and Elwes and Glover who both ham it up... he'll be a perfect fit on Lost. Bell would've been a major distraction. Besides, who needs

But it's just as well. At one time or another, I've hated every character on Lost (even Locke at times). Nikki/Jessica aside, I've always liked most of the characters on Heroes. It'll be interesting to see her in a different role though. This is great news. But as another poster said, how many people can they possibly add to the cast? The secret to season 2 Heroes is to try to contain itself, like Ted, rather than blow up all over the place. I hope they don't over respond to the criticism of the finale.

Look at the throwdown between Sylar and Peter at the end of "Five Years Gone"; that gave me such hope for a full on battle between the two in the finale, and then we get a fistfight?? And I think Ausiello at TV Guide confirmed Kristen was offered a part on Lost, but now we see she probably already had this in the works, thus the coy denial/turn-down.

Chili, are you actually suggesting we have to wait 5 years for the characters to learn their powers good enough to have a decent fight? That's bullshit, they dropped the ball and you know it. Peter had decent control over his powers, sylar had FANTASTIC control over his. They set up this showdown the entire season and they simply chickened out. Fine, they're shortened seasons, but for ABC to commit to three seasons to finish up the run of what may be the most successful show in its history IS unprecedented. That's 3 more years of programming for them. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this sort of deal has never really been done before. Do you honestly think that if the show really wasn't doing well for them, that they'd even consider this?

    by abin sur

16 episodes means less rush to complete episodes, stronger writing and more post-production time...this is a good thing. For Lost season 3, I could have completely done without the "mini-season" they had at the start of the fall season last year - with a couple of exceptions, every episode of Lost after that was top notch.

as a limited series. Which would be different from mini-series (like a 3-part, 2-hour each thingy). IF the Emmys would have a limited series set of categories, then you could move Sopranos, CYE, Deadwood (?) to there, and free up valuable space so shows like BSG and Veronica Mars could compete in series and acting categories.

it was a scheduling and relocation thing. Outlander beat me to it. I don't think it's because Miss Bell prefers Heroes to Lost. Not everything has to be about pitting the two shows against each other. Even though Lost's season finale blew Heroes' out of the water. I like them both, but just sayin'. And I don't know about this new guy for Lost. 'Kid Omega'? Were they kidding us with that name in X3? What a slap in Grant Morrison's face. Steal the name of an awesome character from Morrison's run and slap it on a blowfish character that has absolutely nothing in common with the actual Kid Omega? WTF? Yes, I still hate X3. Lost got 48 episodes, we can all agree on that, right? Novaman5000 asked if any show had gotten that before. The answer is YES. The Drew Carey show was signed to season 8 and 9 before season 7 even started. They ended up making 52 episodes (although I'm sure some of that are full hour episodes broken up into 30-minute ones for the count). So yes, ABC has shown that level of commitment before. In addition, it was a horrible move because the ratings drop between seasons 5 and 6 became a plummet in season 7. By the time season 8 rolled around, they stopped showing episodes and burned them off in the summer. Season 9 was also burned off in the summer when ABC couldn't get out of their contract.
Is Lost going to have the same problem? Of course not. I'm just demonstrating that the deal Lost got is not unique. I also clarified the seasons because I knew if I had brought up Drew Carey, someone would say "that was only 2 seasons, Lost is 3 seasons". In reality, ABC committed to more episodes of Drew.
Although of course as a half-hour sitcom rather than an hour-long drama set in Hawaii it's a lot cheaper to make.

Of course they should respond to the criticisms and I'm sure they will. I just don't want them to over respond. If the finale had been as good as some of the episodes just before it, I would have been fine with it. I just don't want them to start making every episode about big fights or anything. New characters with new powers is always a good way to keep the show fresh however. And I hear that Bell's character will have the power of nudity.

That's a sad statement to say that it's too early in the series to have the kind of knock-down drag out fight that the majority of fans were craving. I love Heroes, don't get me wrong, but if the writers can't come up with bigger themes and storylines for the upcoming seasons than a Peter/Sylar fight, that speaks poorly for the writing staff. They left a good setup for next season already, with the little girl that finds everybody telling HRG about the guy who can "look back at her." Let's not settle for mediocrity, ok?

The problem with the final episode is

    by chrth

It should've been aired as part of a 2-hour finale with the previous ep. So much happens in the penultimate episode that the last episode pales -- especially after waiting a week. Air them together and you'd have 1/4th the complaints as the contact high from the first half would last through the second half.

    by kid z

... and by the mid-season hiatus had practically given up on it. Meanwhile, I had grown to love Heroes, becoming almost obsessed with it. But, when Lost returned, it seemed to have gotten a much-needed second wind... and just kept getting better and better as the season wore on, culminating in the wildest, most insane, completely kick-ass season finale I've ever seen on network TV. Heroes, however, seemed to just get weaker in inverse proportion to Lost's rebound and I watched less and less... didn't even bother recording it's season-ending episode.

    Heroes versus Lost debate

    by maximus prime

Im a fan of both but would not put Heroes int he same catagory of greatness as Lost is in.......Heroes is good for a wee watch with no emotional involvement and although it does have its nice wee twists and turns its no where near as accomplished in its story telling department as Lost is....
Ill watch heroes next season an dall but it really needs to do alot more to live up to its hype....if it keeps delivering the same old stuff I dont think it will be mentioned in the same breath as lost for years to come....very little emotional involvement in Heroes when someone dies its like 'oh another one bites the dust'..when a death happens in lost its a tragedy and u feel the implications of it and the writing is superb..as for the season finale's of the two shows..well the Lost one is still being talked about (look in the top ten talkback list) and the heroes one was im sorry to say predictable.....even Stevie Wonder could see that Nathan was going to come back to save the day...ah well, hopefuly they will improve it come sesaon2, casue it started with soo much promise

    heroes characters

    by zooch

The Heroes finale was fine. My favorite part was when HRG says, "You can call me Noah." Amazing. By far, my favorite character arc of the season. Sure, I would have loved to see Sylar and Peter really go at it like in the Five Years Gone before the door was closed. But everything else was great. Peter has not yet got full control over his power and that's why he exploded. It makes sense because all the characters were struggling with their powers all season. They are saving the Pete/Sylar fight for later. I love the characters on this show. Enough has been said about Hiro, Sylar, Peter, but I like the other characters too, Greg Grunberg's average schlub whose wife cheats on him and the other cops make fun of him, yet he turns out the be extraordinary. All the non-mutant characters are great. I like how the narrator, Mohinder Suresh gives the show a scientific philosophical backbone. Nikki/Jessica was the most annoying (besides Simone, who died) but towards the end when Nikki/Jessica learned to control it she got better. Nathan was a dick all season and he finally redeemed himself. Hiro calling him "flying man" was hilarious, and at the end when he called him "villian" it was sad.

24 episodes into the series and it's too soon to have an epic, satisfying showdown? Buffy did it in 12. In fact, Buffy did it every season with its self contained arcs. Dexter did it in 12. So many shows accomplish big great things in half the time Heroes had, and they STILL blew it. Hell, writers, how about you make it so that each character that was DESTINED to be at this final fight actually DID something besides sit around and watch? Each have these amazing abilities and all they do is sit there. Talk about squandered. It'd be one thing if Heroes was so full of quality character development, that it didn't need action but it's not. The promise of action was the only thing it had going for it, and they just didn't deliver.

"Lost invented the device of using flashbacks"?

    by newc0253

I don't think anyone who writes for Lost would claim that. It'd be interesting to trace the use of flashbacks in tv episodes (c.f. Kung Fu?), but my guess is that the Buffy season 2 finale was probably the most direct inspiration for the standard Lost structure.

The fact that almost all Lost episodes have used flashbacks, and that its been going for 3 seasons now, means that, yes, occassionally there's a weaker episode and the flashbacks aren't that helpful. But so what? Even an sub-par episode of Lost is still better than 99.9% of what's on tv most of the time.

And, in the interests of fairness, to criticise Heroes on the basis that 'many shows accomplish big great things in half the time Heroes had' is kinda silly. The average episode of Heroes has more plot than many shows have in a season. The season 1 finale might not have been the battle royale that many were expecting but let's not pretend that the writers don't know how to plot an episode.

...I'd say I liked both shows equally. But Lost is simply too much of a cock tease. Take the twist out of the finale and nothing really happened in it (Charlie's death being telegraphed many episodes prior). I know someone will come back with "but now we know where the antennae tower is" and that's great if stuff like that rocks your world. The season was suppose to be about the others, they should have focused on Jacob and their excavations. Shows are never made for me in the final season. I'd rather they burn up the story now and come up with more story later. If the "reveals" are good enough, there'd be plenty more story to tell afterwards.
