this show is hilarious
-
I am begining to understand this show. It really isn't that bad. There is some serious humor here.
-
In every HBO thread, somebody has to bring up the fact that THE WIRE is the fucking best thing on TV. So it has been said!....And thus, Omar don't scare! - - - George, The 7th Chicken!!!!
-
Everyone talks up the wire here on AICN, and yet the only people I ever see talking about the Wire...are the people here at AICN. Personally, I think Big Love, with its "we're like the Waltons, only we're polygimists" vibe is the best HBO has to offer right now. The characters are great and the acting is top notch. Plus, the storyline has had some great twists and turns this season.
-
All the main characters have become a little less nice. They're not at Al Swerengen's level, but they're definitely a bit rougher. Besides, how can anyone hate a show that has Bruce Dern and Harry Dean Stanton? As far as the Wire goes, maybe people aren't interested in the lives of crack dealers. What's so strange about that? Even on the Sopranos, they kept Tony clear of the drug trade.
-
I watched "Big Love" for about a year, as I do all made for HBO shows and found it lacking in drama and plot. The premise was fine, as far as it went went, but the compromises made to get the show on the air were just too many to make the show watchable. Now, if they would have dived farther into the Mormon religion and shown how these people came to be where they are now, that would have been worth it. But, basically it's just a show about the ups and downs of marriage with a few relatives thrown in. Something we have seen too many times and not made any fresher by the contrived happenstance of a multiple marriage. Unfortunately, it seems the PTB at HBO have a hit and miss record for their ability to choose projects that have the ability to be a break out success, both critically and with the general population. "Oz", "Deadwood", "Six Feet Under", "Band of Brothers", "From the Earth to the Moon", and "Tales From the Crypt" are examples of HBO at it's best, while "The Wire" and "The Sopranos" although popular in both worlds came off as derivative and a rehash of things we have seen before, a label that should be applied to "Big Love".
-
You lost me half way through your post but when you called The Wire derivative and a rehash of things we've seen before you walked off the plank. For one thing, you can't review the current season with your feelings of the episodes you watched last year. The show has grown and the plot is moving along rather nicely with tensions between the two compounds and the family itself. The show has also started to examine the family dynamic and is putting Bill under a pretty harsh microscope in terms of his motivations for marrying more than one woman and the expectations he puts on his family to maintain his lifestyle. Or to put it more simply, you haven't a freakin' clue what you're talking about.
-
are both great. I'll give the edge to The Wire, although I burned through those on DVD and haven't seen an episode on actual HBO yet. But Big Love is such an amazing show. It's too bad it'll never get the recognition it deserves, being sandwiched between The Sopranos and The Wire's legacies. None of the performances necessarily stand out but that's because they're all perfect, especially Tripplehorn. I can't believe the season is already almost over... (sigh)

Big Love is now top drama dog at HBO..................
by crackerfarmboy
I've had a few issues with the pacing of the show this year. I've felt that every episode has had a bit TOO MUCH drama intertwined in. With that said, it is still HBO's best drama. Yes, I love The Wire too but I think Big Love has more heart. Unless of course Deadwood makes a comeback in some way, shape, or form.
-
Not just the best drama. This season has been amazing, head and shoulders above the first one, and the first was pretty great. Everyone in it is terrific, and Bruce Dern just isn't seen enough these days.
-
I have every season of the Wire on DVD. As well as Homicide life on the Street before it, my previous favorite tv cop show. The Wire is the Best long running crime show ever. Rome may have been my alltime fav but The Wire deserves credit for giving the world, Omar, Stringer, McNulty, Marlo & Marlo's thug (what is that dudes name?) To the Dude that said it was derivative, go back to watching McCSI and thinking your smart for watching a show with lots of fast zooms and color filters on the lenses.
-
I just can't get into Big Love. I've given it a couple tries and I just don't get anything from it. Bill Paxton is just so dry to me. I'm sure that's what "makes it so good" but it just doesn't do it for me. But i've seen the Wire from episode one and it just gets better and better. You are rewarded for being a loyal viewer because the payoffs don't come episode by episode. They come season by season. No other show does that.
-
i want to believe it is. but i think after the years of hype and numerous claims of "best show ever," i'm bound to be disappointed. it would pretty much have to be better than "the sopranos" and "deadwood" (my personal favorite) combined in order to meet the expectations i now have because of all that praise. i'm not sure why i've waited so long to check out "the wire." there are just so many other good shows, i barely have time to watch them all.
-
I wonder how many of these new crops of shows HBO is offering will be any good? I love the big love, entourage and the wire, but man John from Cinci sucked.
-
Never watched the Wire so I don't have no love for that. Crime dramas are a dime a dozen anyway. Now a show about polygamy, that's hot. Throw in the delicious girl-next-door-I'd-like-to-fuck Ginnifer Goodwin and a top cast like they have ... great stuff. So glad it got renewed for a third season. Whomever described this as the Mormon Sopranos hit the nail in the head. This past season has taken the series into dangerous ground. Can't wait to see how it ends.
-
After hearing people go on and on about The Wire I decided to give it a shot. And you know what? They were right. It is an excellent show. Impossible to do it justice in just a brief description. Ok, The Sopranos still has the edge in my book, but I will accept that is probably because of my own personal taste. I find it funnier and better acted and it gains more on repeat viewing. However I can easily believe others would favour The Wire. They are both exceptional shows.
-
you bet you're ass. it's funny and gritty and realistic and profane and, at times touching, and all around just the richest experience i've ever had in front of a television. i beg you to pick up the season one dvd set. if you're not hooked by the end of episode five, you'll never be. there's a brilliant scene in one of the earliest episodes where the drug dealers are having a discussion about chicken mcnuggets. that was when i fell in love. there's also maybe the best scene ever produced in any medium that involves two of the detectives going over a crime scene, while only saying the word "fuck" or variations of the word "fuck". there's not many shows that i feel everyone needs to see, but the wire is one of them.
-
And BL is a somewhat distant 2nd, but is closing fast, with this season's upping the pace and tension a bit. If you haven't seen the wire, go down to your video store or whatever, and rent the first season. Don't try and come in during the middle of season 2, 3, or 4. Start from the beginning and watch it in order. You'll be more than impressed. I got into one day last summer, when the first season's eps were on HBO on demand. I watched them all over the course of like 3 days. It also takes about 3, maybe 4 episodes to start figuring out who's who, but once you do that, it's all gravy, baby. All gravy. You just have to give it a chance. After the first episode, I was like "I don't understand this, everyone says it kicks ass. I'm not seeing it." But I gave it a few more eps, and about episode 2 or 3, it starts to all gel together with some sort of purpose, and from that point on, it's hands down the best cop show ever on tv.
-
It took awhile for it to get going, but once it did... TITS:)
-
was rediculously funny. Climbing out the window into the living-room?
I hope next season they actually make it to the big/ middle time -
...proved way wrong by Big Love this year. I predicted that the show would grow tired after just one season. Season II trampled Season I. Goes to show not to underestimate Tom Hanks. Really looking forward to the finale and season III- and the other Hanks involved HBO momma jammer- The Pacific.
-
Walks that thin line between faith and fanaticism. Not a bad look at the institution of marriage, either.
-
With the advent of the non renewal of John from Cincinnati and the impending doom of Flight of the Conchords.
-
I like the Wire, but I never got the fanaticism with it that I find here. I like Brotherhood in pretty much the same way as I like the Wire and was wondering what the cross-over fans thought. And I have to say, I think I like Big Love more than the other two shows. Not to knock the Wire, it's just not on my top ten list (not that BL is either).
-
I think that Brotherhood is a fine show- excellent acting and realistic storylines. More realistic and unpretentious than anything else Showtime has (though not their most entertaining- that's dexter) That said- I feel that The Wire is the best show I've ever watched and smokes every other show- other than a handful of other HBO shows that are right behind it.
-
Too much else to watch! But I'll give it a chance if someone can answer this question: are the three wives allowed to get it on with each other?
-
I was fine with the first season...but this second one is amazing...I dont want to say mormon godfather, but something very close and very riviting. Glad it got renewed.
-
Now THAT was some fine programming.
-
I meant realistic in the sense that it doesn't go for cheap thrills- the plotlines weren't far fetched- and I found the acting quite good. But no- it doesn't compare even a smidgen to The Wire- but then again- nothing does- except Deadwood.
