A few pics from Jane Campion's HOLY SMOKE with Keitel, Winslet and Grier
Jane Campion makes some quite arresting films, and well... her next film HOLY SMOKE is a movie that I am actually quite interested in. I haven't heard too much about this film beyond the basic plot and that Kate Winslet, Harvey Keitel and Pam Grier are in it... And folks... that is enough to get my interest peaked... But I'll give you the basic concept of the film...
Apparently the film is about Kate Winslet's character, who goes backpacking across India looking for adventure, but comes across some sort of cult. Her family wants her back... they send a top 'American-Cult Buster' to get her... and well things go somewhat north apparently. Watching Winslet and Keitel (He's the Cult Guru dude!) sharpening their acting talons against one another should be a treat... and HOW DOES GRIER fit into all of this? I don't know, but I can't wait to see! But I'll have to at least wait till this Fall... Bummer...

Not that I am complaining about Kate getting nude, I'm all FOR it actually, but I am curious, she's a pretty decent actress, why do you think she has to get naked for movies any more? I mean, sure she saved TITANIC from being COMPLETELY worthless, but they easily could have shot around her nudeness if she had wanted them to. Ah well, go fig. Actually, what I'm MORE worried about with HOLY SMOKE is if HARVEY gets naked!! I REALLY don't need to see him full frontal again - UGH - I had nightmares for weeks. JEEZ!

Yes, I have been absent for a while. I decided to give the net a break after that whole episode with LaneMyers and his personal life. At first, I had this incredible desire to point and laugh at Lane for all the embarrassing things Porter said about him and I also wanted to call him a hypocrite for telling me that I should get a life, but then i realized that Porter could have just as easily been one of my friends trying to pull me back into reality, so i decided to give the net a little breather. Now that Im back I have only one thing to say (in this talkback!): Kate Winslet is far too sexy for my own good. Anyone who thinks shes fat should go back to the women's magazine rack at the supermarket where everyone is 5'10'', 105 lbs., and with an airbushed face that looks so fake it could be CGI.

Sounds like an interesting idea for a film. I'm willing to wager that its Keitel whose playing the cult-buster role, since I'm sure its a lead and Pam Grier has been relegated to supporting roles in her later years, Jackie Brown notwithstanding. As for Kate Winslet and her penchant for nudity, she has so much sensuality that for her not to embrace it and exploit it would be a crime. Of course, she doesn't have to doff her top to do that, but the thought is appreciated.

Oh, and am I the only one who reads some of these posted wildings, where the messenger threatens death, destruction and tax audits on their enemies so that they can hear the lamentation of their women, and find myself thinking of a congressional ban on familial inbreeding?

Kate's a good actress to be sure, but I frankly don't find her very attractive. She tends to be a little on the chunky side. However, she looks decent from these pictures, and I wouldn't mind seeing her naked. HK and PG make this project even more intriguing. Plus, there's India! I always thought that Indian women were especially beautiful - I think it's in the eyes. I realize this email has been more about my tastes in women than the movie, but when someone brings up nudity, my mind strats to wander.

I appreciate the nude female form as much as anyone and I am not some member of the moral majority to say that nudity in film is a sign of the evil and decadence that our society is falling into, but there is definitely a time and place for it. I always get a laugh out of these cheesy films that show at midnight on Skinemax on fridays. they try to act like serious movies but they're nothing more than a poor attempt to mask a skin flick with a story. Usually there's no rhyme or reason as to why some chick is getting naked. At least with a porn flick, which do get boring fairly quickly, they don't try to mask the intent of the film. they cut right to the chase usually in the first 30 seconds of the movie. There are times that nudity is necessary (and appreciated) in serious films. Kate Winslett has appeared in some state of disrobement in several films but never did I get the impression that it was being added because the director knew he could make more money by showing some skin. They were integral parts of the film and it takes a courageous actor or actress to expose themselves to the world for the sake of the character they are playing knowing that everyone is going to be talking about their physical attributes. Kate Winslett certainly fits the bill as a courageous actress and I for one appreciate her willingness to do nude scenes. :) Oh and as an answer to Witt, Jeremy Irons in Damage is another actor who displays himself fully without any self-conscousness.

I personally am really, REALLY tired of all the cookie-cutter blonde "it" girls that Hollywood is churning out these days, constantly stuffing these bland women down our throats as if they were the next greatest thing since sliced bread. Give me Kate Winslet any day. Drop dead gorgeous, funny, a great attitude, and one of the best actresses of her generation, on either side of the Atlantic. I don't get where all the "heavy" talk about Kate comes from, anyways. Her body looks beautiful to me. Much better than the anorexics that come out of Hollywood these days.

Good for Kate for proving that you don't have to be as skinny as Kate Moss to be a modern day sex symbol! There's enough stuff out there encouraging teenage girls to become anorexic that's it's nice to see some admiration for the other side. (The tabloids have been saying stuff about her dieting forever but she never does.)

I think Kate Winslet should be banned for being so gorgeous she makes me ache all over and break out into wild sweats. She completely rocks, and no on eI know understands my absolute fetish for her....it's nice to see people who agree! At any rate, YES, she should be banned (directly into my lap) from this site unless otherwise unclothed.

I may not know what the hell I'm talking about, but I think this movie had a title change. I believe it was originally called "Hideous Kinky". Kind of an interesting title, but I can see why they'd want to change it. Does anyone else know if it's the same film? If not, then Kate has two films coming out this year. If "Hideous Kinky" and "Holy Smoke" are the same film, it's based on a novel called Hideous Kinky (don't know the author) which you can read if you're curious about the plot.

Nope, they are two separate movies. As stated above, Holy Smoke is still shooting, meanwhile Hideous Kinky is finished and is beginning to get a limited release.

My Buck stops with Sarita Choudhary. She was incredible in Mississippi Masala, unfortunately Hollywood never found her any more roles that juicy.
As for film nudity, I'm all for it. The 90's has been so barren in this regard, with fewer and fewer actresses willing to do it (I'm talking to you, Ms. Ricci, (please?)) Remember the glory days when comedies had nude scenes? (Stripes, Vacation and European Vacation, Fast Times) You never see this anymore, it has to be confined to dramas so they can attempt to make it "erotic" rather than gratuitous (fun). -
Just a couple of quick notes...
Yes, "Hideous Kinky" and "Holy Smoke" are two different films and HS recently wrappped. The former was written by Esther Freud, great-granddaughter of you-know-who and is schedueld to open April 23. And the latter was written by Jane Campion and her sister. Harvey Kietel is the "cult buster" who becomes involved with Winslet's character while trying to deprogram her. Pam Grier will be playing his wife.
You can look for Kate to do a "Hideous Kinky" promo swing through all the major talk shows next week (April 12) -
