"Mac Is a Serial Killer" follows Frank (Danny DeVito), Dennis (Glenn Howerton) and Dee (Kaitlin Olsen) as they start to suspect that Mac (Rob McElhenney) is a serial killer terrorizing Philadelphia. Charlie (Charlie Day), on the other hand, attempts to prove Mac's innocence by using techniques he's gleaned from watching too many legal TV shows.Read all of Variety’s story on the matter here.

I watched the very first episode and didn't laugh once. I haven't seen it since. However I know that FX admitted the show had problems, cast Danny Devito in season 2 and changed the show slightly. I hear it has improved and I know one person who said it was kind of funny, but is it really much better or funnier? I love (classic) Danny Devito and would love to see him on a great show. Is this the best we're going to get? Should I give season 2 a try?

For those of us who like stuff like Wonderfalls and Arrested Development, only a little darker.
Aug. 16, 2007, 2:36 a.m. CST
Period. This episode is slightly sub par, but it still features a shit load of Charlie being Charlie. And Charlie being Charlie is funny as hell.
Aug. 16, 2007, 3:17 a.m. CST
It's biggest problem is the uneven nature. Sometimes it's easily funnier than Entourage or South Park. Sometimes it's not even as funny as a bad episode of Scrubs.

Than I have at a lot of other shows for a long time. So fucking funny.
Aug. 16, 2007, 3:25 a.m. CST
No, really! I'm serious. Like Seinfeld and "the first couple of years" funny. Molestation, incest, underage sex and drinking, MILF-penetration, Hitler youth...the list goes on and on... Enjoy!

It's not the best episode but it's probably funnier than anything on TV right now including Entourage, although I have to admit, I've been laughing my ass off at Flight of the Conchords. Obviously Curb and The Office aren't on, but this show is right up there with those as the funniest shows TV has to offer. These guys are so twisted, it's great, and most episodes tie all the threads together as well as Seinfeld or Curb. It is a little inconsistent but I think it's still finding its footing. I know its the third season but it's not like these are 22 episode seasons. Personally I prefer the first season to the second. DeVito is good but I liked the original chemistry of the foursome. Every time I see Devito, I wonder how the show would be different if he weren't there. We'd see different pairings of the cast. For instance, in this episode, when Frank and Charlie interrogate Mac's mom, that would've been Charlie and Dennis if Frank weren't there. So while the premise of most episodes wouldn't necessarily be affected by his addition, it would be a completely different show if he weren't there. Either way, it's great and I love it. When I first got to town I thought, for some very strange reason, that Rob McElhenny lived in my apartment complex and belonged to the pool there, so I go up to this guy at the pool and I'm like, Rob, big fan of the show. And he's pretending not to hear me. I'm like ROB, LOVE THE SHOW! And the guy looks up and he's like, what show? I'm like, Always Sunny... and the guy's just a blank face. So like an idiot I go... in Philadelphia. And the guy's like, what about Philadelphia? Finally I realized it was not Rob and walked away embarrassed. Feels good to get that off my chest. And Rob look-alike, if you're reading this, sorry about that. My bad.

the episode's send-up of Law and Order is spot-on and Charlie Day is great in the McCoy role. Kathleen Robertson is very hot, even with a penis (I'm sure that will come back to haunt me), and Sweet Dee is also hot. I've had some serious debates with crazy guys who don't think Sweet Dee is hot, which is absurd. I think it's a toss-up between her and Sarah Silverman for hottest actress on a TV comedy, although Cheryl Hines, Perry Reeves and of course, the lovely Ms. Jenna Fischer aren't far behind.
Aug. 16, 2007, 4:15 a.m. CST
Yes, it was funny, but not their best. A new writer wrote it, and it seemed to suffer from what most new writers do: make tons of references to past episodes to "please" fans. The new writers for Arrested Development in season 3 did this too, but it happened to an unhealthy degree (George Michael's Star Wars kid tape), and you then realized that there was a skill in having callbacks happen organically, and limited. This episode didn't overdrive it, but mentioning the crack episode didn't seem necessary, I mean the fans would have picked up on the reference just by mentioning it, not explaining the whole thing. And showing Mac's mom again seemed a little tacked on, but nothing in this seemed unnecessary. I just hope things are controlled. That being said, it was a good episode, although Frank seemed a little insane for no reason, and I think the clown shoes noise could have been eliminated. The visual itself was enough. Looking to be an amazing season.
Aug. 16, 2007, 4:18 a.m. CST
As well as the "Waitress". Also, that "To Catch A Predator" homage, may have been awful, but I found myself laughing. Opinions?
Aug. 16, 2007, 4:31 a.m. CST
Entourage is funny. I enjoy the show a lot, but it's mostly due to the storylines they have, which I think are interesting. Sure, Ari was an asshole, which is technically funny, but I didn't think they had that many jokes. I've found this current season to be the only funny one, and I like how they're actually doing jokes now (like that sight gag about Landau's character's book).

Anybody who doesn't like this show actually hates humor itself.

I'm still sort of on the fence about DeVito being on the cast. He does a great job, but I kinda liked the cast being full of nobodies. DeVito still feels like a gimmick to me, although the show is still great.

For me, it's like early 70's National Lampoon material - not afraid to take any subject and make it into a 22 minute sitcom. Other than Sarah Silverman and South Park, I don't see any other show that would have its characters getting hooked or crack, sponsor underage drinking and joining the right to life movement solely to hit on hot chicks. I love the show, and can't wait to see this new espisode. It's been a long summer without the gang.
Aug. 16, 2007, 11:11 a.m. CST
the pilot they sent to FX for consideration? I give FX kudos for giving them a shot based on a cheaply filmed episode..annnd..didn't I see a promo from the FX chairman asking for submissions for comedies that the winner would be aired on FX? By the by, caught this during season 2, so I've got catching up to do. DeVito and crazy Vietnamese = funny.

Chralie is my favourite character. Too Funny. Mac is a funny bastard too. Sweet D is KINDA hot IMO same as the waitress aka Charlie's real life wife, she's kinda cute..
Police walk in with Jihad tape. Charlie: "Aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh Sh!t." Hilarious.

This is the funniest show on TV right now hands down. I agree at times some of it is uneven, but when it's funny it's funny. I can't wait for the new season, and the dvd's for the 1st two seasons. It's Seinfeld on Crack, and that's a good thing!!

And they both sort of reminded me of Scrubs. Well, if Scrubs was on cable and could get away with more

I really hate Scrubs. It's so fucking strained. And this show is no different. Maybe I saw two "off" episodes. But, I was really put off. Lots of mugging and protracted attempts at being edgy. I'll stick with Rescue Me, which manages to have edge without rubbing your nose in it.
Aug. 16, 2007, 1:46 p.m. CST

Aug. 16, 2007, 2:19 p.m. CST
Its not that the show is bad, it just seems to only get jokes by being shocking and that sort of humour hardly does anything for me anymore. A reson I don't laugh at Sarah Silverman. The characters are also far too stupid...to a point of insanity.
Aug. 16, 2007, 3:03 p.m. CST
I can understand people not liking it due to the characters being assholes, but I still think it is impossible to not find "Mac Bangs Dennis' Mom" hilarious, especially the last scene with the Waitress' speech, and Charlie's reaction. For whatever reason, I don't really enjoy Scrubs. If I were to have a TV show, it'd probably turn out pretty similar to what Scrubs is, but for whatever reason, the show doesn't work on me. I think my main problem is the cutaway jokes go too far at times, but particularly the cartoon "swoosh" noises they have when people run, or move, or whatever. Also, fuck you about that Arrested Development "joke", ha.
Aug. 16, 2007, 3:06 p.m. CST
love this show
Aug. 16, 2007, 3:46 p.m. CST
I would cite Charlie's getting hopped up on roids and going through DRASTIC mood changes, Dennis and Dee trying to buy crack, I could go on. The show feels like a clever mixture of the best traits of Seinfeld, Friends, and Arrested. The sharp dialogue of early eps of Friends, the unlikely stories of Seinfeld (and some of the same character traits) and the classic absurdity of Arrested. Love this show, in case you can't tell...
Aug. 16, 2007, 5:08 p.m. CST
God damn Charlie is the best. This episode was hilarious, but probably in the 2nd tier of the show's overall quality. Although I need to state that I though the clown-shoes-squeaking was downright hilarious. (contrary to a previous poster, but to each his own.) It's a show where you need to realize these people are idiots, and you're just along for the ride. At any moment the viewer trying to rationalize pretending to be a serial killer just kills it, or someone being naive enough to do it. But for what it is, it's the best god damned comedy on TV. :)

Still love the show, its hilarious and beyond twisted, beats the shit out of most crappy formulaic sitcoms of the shitty networks. I miss the format of the show when they actually filmed it in Philly, on location. Its what made it original and it felt real in an odd way. Now the show stinks of the soundstage they film it on with the tear-down sets and the bright as the sun spotlights. Of course I'm still going to watch every episode and laugh my ass off, I just hope I can get used to the soundstage.

RyanMurray- That Charlie line to his "son" was and is one of the funniest lines imho EVER! Same episode- :You have to buy me a toy. I don't have to Buy YOU SHIIIT!". This show is insane. The fight club episode, The Mac bangs Dennis mom ep. The Prom ep, the abortion ep. Or just certain lines from every episode- The Pilot Ep- "I took him to the back alley and i TORE HIS ASS APART!" Dennis looks on like WTF!!!!. Frank and- "My WHOOOR wife!". Fuck an A- Pepper Jack Loves Fraggle Rock! Welcome Back Phili!!
