Ice Cube wants to do a comic book movie... which one?

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I know a bunch of comic characters are running through your mind right now... but it's probably not anyone you're thinking. I can't say I knew of this graphic novel, 10, before this announcement. It's from the creative duo of Shannon Eric Denton and Keith Giffin. It's kind of a BATTLE ROYALE-ish tale about a man who receives a letter that appears to be a piece of junk mail telling him that he's in a competition with 9 others. The idea is whomever is left alive wins. He throws it out, not paying it any mind... until a man with an ax appears at his doorstep. Ice Cube is developing the movie as a starring vehicle at Dimension. Gustin Nash (CHARLIE BARTLETT) and Jesse Cale adapt.

Nice concept, but we all know it'll be a trainwreck

    by NachoNegro

Done by the right person, with the right cast, this could actually be very good. This is what pisses me off - good concepts let down by falling into the hands of buttfaced idiots.

You can't have a cold drink without (an) Ice Cube.

    by nomihs

ICE was really warming up his acting career with films like Friday and Are We There Yet?, or Next Friday and Are We Done Yet?, or Friday After Next and Are We Done Making These Eddie Murphy Wanna Be Family Films Yet?. Either way you slice the Cube, you come up with the "Keitel effect". See, if you can't get a great (black) actor like Will Smith you get Ice Cube. Like if you can't get a great (white and looks pissed off most of the time) actor like Robert DeNiro, you get Harvey Keitel. That is the "Keitel effect". If you can't get Kraft mac and cheese, you get the next best thing. Just like what you want, only not.

I was thinking the very same thing about the new animation. Looks great but without the punchline its not up to much . I watched it for about 2 mins straight waiting for Harry to pop up, but maybe the fact that i wasted 2 mins watching and waiting for nothing is the punchline .

Skoobyx, I think someone has the rights but

    by beastie

I don't think, what with all the school shootings and American sensitivity and need to draw comparisons to everything, that it will ever get made. Remember when someone was gonna make Chuck Palahniuk's Survivor and then it didn't happen because of 9/11? The only resemblence was a plane crash, but NOOOO, a plane crash despite the fact that it wasn't a terrorist hijacking, would remind people of 9/11. So I highly doubt that the American version of Battle Royale will ever be made.

No, Cristal Is The Choice Of Video Drectors and Celebs

    by LaserPants

Dude, people in "da 'hood" don't drink Cristal, they drink whatever they can afford... which is usually cheap and makes you go blind. People might say they drink Cristal, but thats a fantasy / status symbol reserved to the elite -- celebs, video directors, rappers, upper-class white guys from the suburbs pretending they're black (collars popped, minstrel show-y faux ebonics in tow). Of course, I'm sure there are plenty of successful drug dealers who drink it and make a big show of the fact they can afford it (before they die at the ripe old age of 19).

BSB, Have You Ever Lived In Poverty?

    by LaserPants

Let me guess, the answer is "no," right? You're white, upper-middle class? Not surprising. Although I agree that it would be for the best to not drink were you in such a situation, BUT, let me ask you, if you were surrounded by hopelessness, poverty, and negelct with seemingly no way out, wouldn't you want to numb yourself? I'm not saying it excuses the behavior, but the quote "there but for the grace of God go I," comes to mind. Poverty destroys people, their minds, their souls, their hope. Moreover, "pulling yourself up by your bootstraps" don't mean shit if you don't even have boots. Or can barely read. Its a desperate situation, and people fall down the hole of addiction very easily. If you've ever been there, if you work in poverty ridden communities, you'll see that pithy, easy solutions don't work so well in the real world. You may as well have said, "let them eat cake!"<br><br> Of course, I agree with you in theory, that would be best not to fall down that well, but its also not nearly as easy as you seem to think it is. Its very difficult to pull yourself out when you have no access to the resources that others (usually white and middle class) have access to.<br><br> Anohter thing you might want to keep in mind -- what you see in rap videos bares slim to no relation to actual life in the hood. Its a fantasy. Kids emulate the style of speaking and dress, sure, but its an illusion.

but I love how "Middle America" gets thrown around all the time in citings of racism and then the stats are NYc, LA, possibly Chiago or Detroit. I live in Middle America, I live in the dead center, I live in Kansas in a middle class farming community. Are we predominatly white, yes, however we do have minorities,I'm white, my sister is black, my borther is hispanic. 2 ladies in the office I work in have married black men and have children by them. There is a black minister in my town who writes for the local paper and has statd 2 different churches here. Tehre are black people that work in our wal-mart and there are Hispanic people that work on our farms. We pay good wages, and we live togather. Is there some racists here, of course, we have some stupid crackers that say stupid crap all the time. Do we have other problems, yes we do, we have black guys on our local college basketball team that have been arrested for rape and for drugs, but they have never complained about being beat up, at least to my knowledge. The middle America I live in is not racist on either side.<P>now can we get back to making fun of Ice cube

    by Series7

Ice Cube has four good movies, Boys in the Hood, Trespass, Friday, and Three Kings. All of which were directed by competent directors. Maybe if they get a good director Ice Cube could come off as a believable fat guy beating up people. But if not its just gonna be his ego flying all over the place and all the action will not be believable. Plus there is no way the Cube could ever beat Brooke Smith. And this movie is a huge rip-off, but so is every other movie about this idea.

    by BringingSexyBack

of extreme poverty. But that does not excuse criminal behavior (Lost Prophet will back me up on this, right LP?) nor should it be an excuse for further nihilism through addiction. I used to be very Progressive, and my stance, for years, was similar to yours. But I've come to the conclusion that too many people take comfort in being a victim, rather than lifting themselves out of poverty by refusing to be a victim. In America, there are too many opportunities - no matter your race - for anyone to remain poor forever. Even if sacrifices need to be made for the next generation to rise up, they can be done. I refuse to acknowledge poverty as an excuse for violence and nihilism.

    by spud mcspud

That's pretty much how it is in my area. I live in the East Midlands in England - hardly "da hood", but there's plenty of wannabe gangstas and even more plentiful poverty amongst ALL races - and it's safer for someone of colour to walk through a white neighbourhood round here than for a white to walk through an ethnic neighbourhood. There are easily more gun-related incidents among black and Asian people than any other races in my area. And the British government is busily trying to encourage immigration (illegal or otherwise) whilst coming up with a thousand ways to make white people feel THEIR post-colonial guilt, by stopping white people from getting jobs because they are "over-represented". Here's an interesting link to a story about just that:<P> Now, back on topic. Yes, TRESPASS scared the living shit out of me too. Because most black people in my area think they live in South Central LA anyway - wear the clothes, speak the patois, even have THE ACCENTS! And certainly have the hardware too. Shit got real, yo.<P> Cube sold out to the man. How many white middle-class folks saw the ARE WE DONE YET? movies?<P> Case closed.

    by spud mcspud

I agree with the sentiments about it being safer to walk through rich neighbourhoods than poor ones, regardless of colour. The gun crime statistics are definitely higher in my area amongst poor ethnic areas than in poor white or mixed areas though - regardless of economic shortage. I think the wannabe gangsta culture has a lot to do with it - as does the segregationism perpetrated in pop culture WITH THE CONSENT OF MINORITIES! I mean, in HMV over here there's a "Black Movies" section! If people of other races want to feel equal to the indigenous population of the country they wish to now be a part of, how does this kind of cultural segregation help?<P> Does anyone here think that a season of "White Movies", or "White Music", or a "Music of White Origin" award show is going to get very far?<P> Positive discrimination is already here. It's just being kept exceptionally quiet.<P> To conclude: you and BSB are both right in that EVERYONE, regardless of race, can get themselves out of the shit if they really wanted to. It all goes back to that UK/US "I'm a victim" culture, which is perpetuated by lawyers and shit chat show hosts everywhere.<P> Cube still sucks as an actor though. Except in FRIDAY.

Your area in England is precisely what Lost Prophet and I were debating yesterday (not really debating though, because we're mostly in agreement). The gangsta culture, and part of it disseminated through video games, strongly influences people to commit criminal acts they otherwise would not. He and I agree that that is not an excuse, but merely a fact. In a way, I'm glad Ice Cube is doing wholesome comedies, since he obviously wants to make a break away from the hardcore gangsta culture. However, I don't see a Farrelly Brothers movie featuring 50 Cent anytime soon, unfortunately.

I Agree, BSB, Poverty Is No Excuse For Nihilism

    by LaserPants

But it sure as shit gives it context and motive, however misguided and doomed it may be, its understandable. You write as if pulling yourself out is easy; that you would simply just shut out the negativity around you and rise above to greatness with ease. Really? Are you sure? Point of fact, its next to impossible for most living in poverty to pull themselves out of the relentless cycle. It can be done, sure, but its nowhere near as simple or easy as you seem to think it is. I also agree with you that racism runs both ways, but you're out of you mind if you think the racism directed at whites is anywhere near as bad or pervasive or systemic and chronic as that directed at blacks. Not only in terms of social situations, but in terms of the very power structure of the country. I don't think its an intractable situation, though, and certainly things have gotten better, and certainly victimization does nobody any good whatsoever, but I think your blaise stance is rather naive and irresponsible, not to mention without empathy. In short: walk a mile, then tell me whats up.

He "took the subway to Manhattan's East Village, where he looked for "happy" white people to avenge the mistreatment of black people." I've done my best to avoid looking happy in public. <p>Here's another from last year also .. ... white woman stabbed for being white ... <p>There's a serious pattern in there.

Oh Well, I Guess You're Right BSB

    by LaserPants

Theres a vast conspiracy against whites perpetrated by blacks. Racism directed at whites is much worse than anything suffered by blacks even though the black community still seems to have no real collective power base in the ruling government and weren't even allowed to shit in the same place as whites about 40 years ago. In addition, there is a virtual epidemic of blacks (well, okay, two) just upping and killing whites just because of the color of their skin ALL THE TIME! And this is somehow worse than 5 cops, charged with serving and protecting, the representatives of the will of the people and the government, gunning a black man down for GOING INTO HIS APARTMENT. (Apparently, theres a time limit on atrocity, since it didn't happen last week its irrelevant, right?) (Oh, and lest we also mention the various beatings and killings of blacks in Bensonhurst and Bay Ridge, Brooklyn by the poor, downtrodden white man. It was self-defense, right?) Its true! This genocide the blacks are perptrating against whites is exactly like the ethnic cleansing in Bosnia but way worse. Its gotten so that a white man can't even open the door to his Lexus that some negro is ON THE SAME SIDEWALK looking all scary and black. Also, the political system, although run almost exclusively by whites, is actually controlled by blacks, and I suppose... Jews too, right? Like the liberal media and such? And you gleaned all this from a couple of racially motivated muggings/killings in NYC? The kind of isolated incidents that have gone on and on in NYC, back and forth, between all the races, over and over again, for, oh, I'll say, the last 150 years or so? If only someone could come up with a Final Solution to this "black" problem. Are you that man, BSB? Are you... that man?<br><br> No, but wait, do you actually think the power structure is color-blind? That must've been why Barack Obama has already received several death threats for having the audacity to even run for nomination; and why he has to have double the security the other candidates have -- to avoid being assasinated for being black. Yep, totally color-blind. <br><br> Oh, btw, I do agree that class is the real issue, here, but to insist that racism isn't also a factor is, well, ludicrous and naive. As ludicrous and naive as thinking that getting out of poverty is as easy as you seem to think it is. Again: walk a mile.

Yep, I am sure they are much more worried about the Mudlick, Kentucky chapter of the KKK than they are of Islamic Terrorists. have said myself years ago. Reminds me how naive I was.<p> It's sad to see you totally discount the lives of those white murder victims while continuing to put Amadou Diallo on a pedestal.<p> I never said getting out of poverty is easy. Scroll up. I said sacrifices have to be made. A family may not get out in one generation, but it may with the next through schooling, proper child rearing, hard work, saving, etc. It will not happen spending the paycheck on Colt 45 and obsessing about Whitey.<p> And you think my examples were limited to NYC? I was being kind. Here's an incident from Seattle. Looks like killing whiteys is not just an East Coast Thing. <p> You make it sound like there are no poor white people. Tell that to the (hopefully not) dead miners who kill themselves everyday breathing coal dust just to support their families. <p> And why would I be the one to find a "solution" to the problem? I highly doubt any solution coming from a cracker will be embraced anyway.<p> This is why, on matters of race, I left the Progressive position. Too much self-pitying and hopelessness, and a total blind eye to reality.

My mere sticking point on that is that its nowhere near as easy as you seem to think it is. Moreover, you must be insane if racism directed at whites runs anywhere near as bad or as deep as racism against blacks. I know it came from the Prez of Mexico, not the Prez of the US, but when a world leader says his own citizens would only take the jobs "not even black people want," you're talking about deep-seated, systemic, chronic racism. Period. And I won't even bother bringing up Hurricane Katrina.<br><br> In addition, I didn't just blow off those attacks, all I am saying is that a couple of allegedly racially motivated assaults does not a movement make, and is not indicative of a broader, systemic racism. To think so strikes me as being naive and ridiculous, not to mention paranoid.<br><br> Furthermore, I never said there weren't poor white people. Furthermore, I agreed with you that the Class War is the real defining issue in America today, BUT, you're insane if you think that racism isn't also a factor. A RASH Of Racially Motivated Killings?

    by LaserPants

I believe the number was two, right? Not saying thats not bad, clearly any murder is bad, but you act like there are epidemic levels of racially motivated killings; epidemic levels blacks killing whites. Thats just not true, and comes off as paranoid (and ridiculous). I mean, really now. Everyone has to watch their back these days, but, odds are, as a white man, you're very unlikely to be murdered at all, BUT if you are so unlucky, you're much more likely to get killed by another white man or woman, most likely a relative or a close friend, than a black man. If your black, on the other hand, you're most likely going to be killed by another black man (at epidemic levels), or a white cop (at unnacceptably high levels). That speaks to both a need for the black community to get its shit together, and the broader systemic racism to disappear. Of course, the black community is culpable, and needs to get its shit togehter, but to deny that this systemic racism doesn't exist, or that this systemic racism is one of the things that the black comunity still has to overcome, is ludicrous. Keeping in mind, of course, that there are people who take advantage, like the Denny's patrons, but, again, notice how, for the bigot, one anecdotal story means all black people are a bunch of murders screaming false charges of racism at the Dennys. That kind of kneejerk bigot perpsective and response is racist. Period.<br><br>Btw, wasn't Jeebus black, Bloop? He was "one of the good ones," though right? One of the magical ones! Yay!

Seems like most of middle america falls somewhere within the fearful, paranoid, vaguely racist demographic and they appear to be doing just fine underneath the drawl and slow, slackjawed gaze at nothing in particular, or particularly interesting.

Actually, The Taliban Is Already Back In Afghanistan

    by LaserPants

We had them on the run before the Iraquagmire started, now they're back in force, and kicking our asses. Just like they did to the Russians! How ironic!<br><br>Oh, and the "Christian Army" Fudgemonkey is refering to, that "Christian Army" that funded, armed, and trained the Taliban was, you guessed it, the United States. Our tax dollars spent by Reagan, to train the terrorist Taliban (ostensibly to beat back the Russians) who would eventually come back to smack the shit out of us, one would assume, for being so fucking stupid.<br><br> Yep, its yet another Republican foreign policy disaster. So has everyone woken up to the fact that Republicans are emphatically not able to govern OR protect the country AT ALL? BSB, Huh? Say What Now?

    by LaserPants

No, dude, you said these isolated incidents were indicative of some kind of crime epidemic / trend where black people were killing white people left and right, in epidemic numbers, and that this somehow, inexplicably proves that racism against blacks no longer exists. Not only is that lousy reasoning, it doesn't even make any sense, nor bare any relation to reality.<br><br> Also, I made it quite clear that the crimes were monsterous, as any murder is whether its allegedly racially motivated or not. I just don't think that these 4 random events, spread out over a couple of years, even come close to the chronic, systemic racism that blacks faced, and continue to face in the US today. Keeping in mind that, yes, things have gotten better, and yes, the black commiunity has to get its own shit together before things move forward. But just because the black community has some work to do fixing its own problems, doesn't mean that the systemic racism doesn't exist. If anything, its another level of repression. For proof, again, walk into any urban public school and tell me what you see. Now walk into an affluent suburban school and tell me what you see. Did segregation ever really end? Not as far as I can see. It just got called something else. Real easy to pull up your bootstraps when you dad owns the store, not so much if you're begging for a job there.

Bonnie chose her team. She could've picked some of the boys on her team, but she didn't. She knew that Melissa sucked, yet she picked her anyway. Julia was a problem, and everyone could see she was bitter. However, Bonnie picked her anyway. Rock noticed Julia's issues right away, and knew she was no good for that service. He's a smart dude. As for Ramsey's advice, what was he going to do for Bonnie? With two people screwing up, was Jen supposed to pick up the slack? Bonnie just needed to get people in line, which she couldn't. As for the culinary school thing. At the time Julia made it just behind Jen, Bonnie, and Rock. Jen and Bonnie already went to culinary school. Rock was an executive chef beforehand. It was impressive that without formal training, Julia made it to the final four. She was only eliminated because Ramsey didn't feel that he could give a restaurant to someone without formal culinary training. It's not like she was a screw up, so he sent her to school. And finally, "Whiteys got no chance on that show." Huh? Eight out of twelve contestants this season were white. The previous two winners were white.

    Unions Are The Problem?!

    by LaserPants

Of course they are! For the elite who run the country and control the purse strings. For the working classes, unions are indespensible. Of course, Bloop, being an affluent christian republican white male who I can only assume lives in an upper class suburb, is threatened by the very notion that the working classes should have things like a decent living wage and health benefits. Story as old as time.<br><br> Oh, and btw, I wonder what your Jeebus would think about your worldview Bloop. Didn't he encourage us to help the poor? Again, ironic how, 99% of the time, its the progressives and atheists who actually follow Christs teachings, while the so-called "Christians" are selfish, vindictive, violent, hateful, racist, bioted, and ignorant. Note to neocon christians -- following the word of your god is alot more than chanting the braind name over and over again. In order to have moral superiority, you actually have to be morally superior. Your chants of Jeebus sound more like "sieg heil" to more or less everyone else in the entire world. Not Jeebus's fault, mind, he was just fine, its YOUR fault. And you better be glad the hell you believe in doesn't exist, otherwise, you'd be the first in line for the eternal frying pan.

More FastFood Resturants In the 'Hood,Than Fruit Stands

    by LaserPants

Ergo the statement that fast food companies specifically target low income neighborhoods with cheap, sugar heavy, nutrient low, obesity causing "food." In addition to a surfeit of fast food emporiums, theres also more alchohol ads, tobacco ads, and distributers of said product in low income neighborhoods. Specifically placed in order to maximize profit from a troubled population. Of course, you're right though, you could always choose to eat an apple instead, but if eating junk is constantly reinforced, made cheap and easy to get, and is laden with various chemicals to make you want to eat more of the trash, then guess what, most people, usually poor and uneducated, are going to go for it. Ergo, having a captive consumer base, the fast food compaines are preying on the poor and uneducated with their low-cost, tasty poisons. Again, Bloop, before you start spitting your second or third morning meal on the screen -- what would your Jeebus think?

Laserpants - seriously, you can't blame Burger King

    by BringingSexyBack

for opening restaurants in the ghetto. First of all, they are independently-owned franchises. In fact, I would bet most of the ghetto-based BKs are owned by minorities. EVERYONE markets their product, whether it be a DELICIOUS JUICY QUAD STACKER or organic produce. They're not hypnotizing the ghetto into eating junk. There are fat white people who eat Burger King too. Maybe whiteys are too timid to stand up to the Man, but that's another story. Anyway, it's smart business to market things like Big Macs, Whoppers, Colt 45, etc. to the ghetto because business people are out to make money, and sadly, the customer base is strong there. The only thing I oppose is cigarettes. They have been proven to be addictive and deadly, so that's another issue. Bad food is not addictive. A ghetto mother/father can easily feed their family good food from a supermarket instead of Burger King. It's called choice. Bottom line is Burger King and McDonald's owners are business people who will open a place in the ghetto, the suburbs, China, Tokyo, Canada, even Scotland - if it makes a buck. It's not a conspiracy against black people.

Bonnie chose Julia because she had no choice (last to be chosen) and could not have known her bitterness would continue through service. Not having gone to culinary school should not be an excuse for her utter unprofessionalism. She doesn't DESERVE a free ride to school with that attitude, she didn't earn it. It was a handout that she will waste anyway because someone else, more deserving with a better attitude, could have used that opportunity. And Ramsay was shown to have given Rock private coaching during service, and none was given to Bonnie. We can't even assume it was done off-camera, we have to go by what we saw. Personally, I would have thrown Julia out of the kitchen and done the work myself. And Josh was a fuck-up, but he didn't deliberately try to screw Rock because he wanted a white girl to win. Yet he came off as the bad guy while Julia walked away squeeky clean. WHUDAFXUP?

Although The US Is Ranked 2nd In Education Spending

    by LaserPants

the vast majority of that important funding is going, you guessed it, to the elite upper-middle class suburban public schools; students who don't need it because they're already affluent and already have access to the best of the best. Meanwhile, in the hood, poor kids who have no resources have to use 10 year old text books, and sit in vermin infested buildings which may or may not have things like windows, or heat in the winter. Ergo, the problem. The fact that segregation never ended, and that the deck is stacked, and seemingly stacked intentionally by a racist and classist system built to serve the rich at the expense of the poor and needy. Again: WWJD? Why he'd probably openly revolt against the conservative power structure and be killed for it. Just like in the story!

Ice Cube should plan this one carefully

    by geodesigns

I object to any comments about Ice Cube based solely on race. That being said, Ice (or as a prominent newspaper once addressed him as “Mr.Cube” as they address all individuals using what they believe is their last name) should be judged solely on the merits of his acting ability and how appropriate he was for a role. Was he good actor- yes or no? Was he appropriate for the role- yes or no? Any judgments on Ice Cube or anyone for that matter based solely on his color is a racist remark. With that preamble over, I’ll just say that Ice Cube is a rapper with a very good first album, a decent actor who at times chooses or is afforded roles like XXX2 that by just watching this movie, Mr. Cube did not act well as a mass appeal action hero, and he wasn’t appropriate for the role. Just think of a list of actors that are widely regarded as action hero types. I just don’t think Ice is action hero material, but he’s a decent actor for supporting roles. If the studios picked him based on diversity, I believe Denzel, Or Sam L. Jackson (who played the mentor in the movie) make stronger leading types, but the role also asked for a young hero, and those distinguished actors are in their 40’s, so it was a tough choice for the studios, since Vin did not want to do Part II- he wanted more money. Ice Cube, if you want to do a comic book movie, listen to the fans first, cast yourself in an appropriate role for you, don’t just make yourself the action hero. Some comic book adaptations are loosely based on the book, and it works fine. Other comic book movies make too many changes and the fans hate it, and the audiences hat it. It’ll make a good $5.00 DVD in the Wall Mart bargain bin. I assume you don’t want that, so whatever you do, do it right. The comic “10” is not as famous as, say Batman or Superman, where it’s so important to be true to the source material, and Sin City and 300 are literal translations of the comic, because the source material was so good, it would have been a travesty not to strongly reference the comics. Spider-Man 2 did not literally adhere to an exact published comic book story, yet captured the essence of popular Spidey storylines. Blade (great casting with Wesley) was done very well. Just do it right, Ice, don’t mess it up, because the Wall Mart bargain bin will be waiting if you do mess up. Earn our respect and adapt this comic book the right way, think it through, and give us a great adaptation, not just "Another Ice Cube Vehicle". Earn our respect, Ice- I'm hopefull you will will plan this one carefully.

Is your full name SS, Adress License plate number and DOB included on the list? Plot fucking killed right there buddy, plot fucking killed.. Also what motivates the other nine to take part. Did some guy who go the letter really have nothing going on for them. So they said sure what the hell fuck it. It's a slow Friday, and I tired of jerking it to anime tentacle porn.
