Cop zombie! DIARY OF THE DEAD pics hit the net!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here.
I'm on record as not completely agreeing with Romero's idea for a new DEAD film. I've take a little flack from hardcore Romero fans, including Harry, for my opinion, but I've never had any hope or desire for this film to be shitty. I never said it would be bad, just that I didn't like the central plot, the one-liner idea that was put out when the project was announced. "Blair Witch meets Night of the Living Dead."
I do have faith in Romero. I am excited to see the film. I know Romero's track record, so I know the film will be about more than just kids with a video camera and there'll be something deeper to the film. And it's more Romero zombies. How could I not be excited?
I just know I would be more excited if he had made this a period film and set alongside the events of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD with kids making their own movie on Black and White 16mm as the zombies begin showing up.

Land of the Dead was TERRIBLE. Anyone that thinks otherwise is just feeling bad for Romero and can't give their hero the bad review he deserved for that one. We've seen the 'motley crew of survivors taking on hordes of zombies' movie a million times. Come out with something original for god sakes.

Um.. from the sound of it this was going to be harrowingly 'realistic' - Blair Witch style as if a docu camera caught it all unfolding. The 'posed' photo above looks sooo far from that it's untrue. Kind of looks like studio set drivel to me.

As much as I love Romero's zombie films, the zombie genre is just way too bloated at this point. I can't get too excited about this. I liked "Land of the Dead", but it was mostly retread and it's no doubt the lesser of his zombie films, even though it looked really slick and all with his (somewhat) big budget for it. But this? "The Blair Witch Project" meets "Night of the Living Dead"? This idea might have worked a bit better if they had done it ABOUT 7 YEARS AGO, after the original "Blair Witch Project". But now? Just looks like another zombie film. Sure, the idea is kind of neat, but like Quint says: it feels like this would work better if they made it a peroid film. Now THAT would be cool to see. But the lower the budget is, the harder it is to really make it peroid. I suppose it could be done if they were careful enough: they could have blown their budget on '60s clothing, some okay zombie make-up, shot it in grainy black and white, and only shot in the woods and other rural areas, in order to exclude and modern crap from showing up, but it's obvious they are not going that way. So I guess this is happening durring Tom Savini's "Night of the Living Dead" instead. Oh well.

so why can't Romero make 5 zombie movies? Plus, Romero's done more movies than Leone already, so it's a lower percentage of his filmography. (I would've said how many westerns John Ford did but I didn't want to have to research that.)
I'm confused by these photos though because I was under the impression it was all from the POV of the cameras. Are these just publicity stills or are they actually from the movie?
One thing I do know, Romero did this low budget and independent and said it was the most free he's felt since NOTLD, so I got hopes. -

I hope this one is far less allegorical. To paraphrase Tolkein, his films would be better served if they had application rather than allegory. That being said, the first two Dead films are classics and have yet to be beat in my opinion. I didn't discover them until later in life and am amazed at how well they hold up on repeat viewing. Good luck Romero.

Sure, the acting was terrible, and there were a few silly moments (how do you "kick" a map into a river), but there were also some generally great parts. The end scene is one of the few genuinely frightening moments in a horror film. I cannot remember the last time a horror film had me thinking about it more than ten minutes after the film ended. The figure in the corner was the perfect ending to the film and it sticks in your head like the ending to a great short story.

That first shot looks patheticly bad. I would be excited if it were a comedy- because that's what it looks like. A sequal to Shaun of the Dead. People taking themselves too seriously holding a variety of objects- half of which are hilarious.

"Land of the Dead" had it's moments (mainly thanks to Dennis Hopper) but this doesn't really stir me. Still, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. I kind of wish he'd do vampires or yetis again honestly. "Martin" and "Creepshow" were great.

I suppose I wouldn't mind either if they were all good zombie movies, but that's never going to happen. No, we'd end up with more clones of "Zombie Lake", "Burial Ground", and "Day of the Dead 2: Contagium" than we would anything else.

I liked Land of the Dead a lot, but it really irked me that the zombies seemed to have developed a stealth mode for sneaking up on victims. They kept jumping out of nowhere to attack, and that got old very quickly. One of the things that really sold me on the first three was that you could walk right by them, and that it was only greed and stupidity that got you killed.
As far as Diary of the Dead goes, count me in. What am I, not going to see another Romero Dead flick? -
I love how the "star" writers on this site like Moriarty and Quint start pieces with "I'm on record as...", like we're all taking careful note of their views, or that their opinions actually count for anything in the real world.

first off, Leone made six westerns, and second, at least from Fistfull to OUaTiTW(haven't seen "Duck, You Sucker" or "My Name is Nobody") , they have a tendancy to progress from good to fucking excellent. Romero's gone from revolutionary(Night), to amazing(Dawn), to ok(Day), to pretty damn dissapointing(Land). you'll note the downward trend here. and having watched the founder of the zombie genre get trumped by movies like 28 Days Later and the Dawn remake is more than a bit depressing.

You know there was a few reasons why they kept Dennis Hopper on the movie right? This is directly linked with why he was so happy with the freedom he has and why so many crappy ass movies have been coming out of Hollywood the past few years.

I'm a big fan of NOtLD and DOtD, but not because they are well written, and definitely not because they are well directed. They are simple, I love zombies, and they have a certain charm that comes from the period the were made. As time goes by the competency of other directors far surpassed Romeros and thier films are going to make anything Romero does now look desperate or quaint. I remember when Day of the Dead came out it was at the exact same time Return of the Night of the Living Dead was released. I was surprised to find I enjoyed RotNOtLD much more. It was the first mainstream zombie movie to do it better than Romero while still giving him a nod. He started the succesful stage of the genre, it's clear (Land of the Dead was unwatchable garbage) though that his time has gone. With all that said, I'll be first in line for this one.

I LOVED Land of the Dead, it was a theater-going experience I will treasure forever, getting to see a new, wonderful, gruesome, old-school zombie flick by the master at a fancy first-run theater.
That said, having a character in a movie shooting film, which we the audience see in handheld POV shots, is probably my LEAST FAVORITE horror movie trope from the last twenty years. I hate it worse than avid farts, worse than the self-referential shit "scream" ushered in. Anyone remember "Blair Witch 2"? Yeah.
But this is Romero! I'll have faith. And I'll buy a ticket regardless. -

You couldn't have. You didn't, did you? Dude, that's one the best of the best! But then, this TB is full of haters who didn't enjoy LAND OF THE DEAD, so who knows. Oh yeah, anyone who didn't think Land of the Dead was awesome, fuck you!!!! The heavy allegories ("sky flowers" is brilliant, stop lying), the Asia Argento, the mall/tower propaganda footage, the non-hateful Leguizamo role... and most of all the amazing Romero zombies... Awesome. Granted, "Rocky Balboa" gets the nod for most amazing late-career comeback by a filmmaker, but still, Land of the Dead was superb.

...not brains. It's is highly unlikely that a Romero Zombie would be able to break through the skull with teeth and fingers alone. They usually go for fleshy parts first. If they came upon some brains, I am not saying they wouldn't eat them, but they don't target brains more than any other part of the body. Get it straight Daddylonghead! And I would say that the Iraq war may have been Sky Flowers for 9/11, but 9/11 itself was a terrorist act not a manufactured distraction in any way shape or form. So in this case, Daddylonghead=Bad at analogies.

Did Dennis Hopper not gave a more stiff performance then the zombies? They kept him on the movie because they "needed big names to sell". Otherwise, it was just a bunch of Canadians acting. There was a lot of good stuff working for the movie, then there was a ton of bad stuff. Try to spot the CG, then the standard sfx that they used in land.

I'm glad you said that because it always bugs me how people say "BRAINS!" for anything to do with zombies. I love RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD too but "BRAINS!" has nothing to do with Romero zombies.
To me sky flowers didn't make me think of 9-11, it was more like TV. Empty entertainment to distract people. I can see what somebody was saying about "application" being better than allegory, but I would say LAND is somewhere between the two. Maybe closer to allegory than DAWN is but still, it is not directly talking about a certain incident, it is more a general observation that people with money often shield themselves off from the rest of the world's problems. Anyway I liked it and although I am in the minority with this one I do think it's a better movie than 28 DAYS LATER. That was a pretty good movie but it didn't add much to what Romero had already done in DAWN and DAY and I prefer Romero's "movie" visual style to Boyle's "documentary" style. LAND was more interesting to me because of the way it dealt with class issues and also moved forward the story of the zombies, following on the developments of DAY.
28 WEEKS LATER I liked a little better than the first one but it kind of lost me as it went on, while LAND kept me in its claws the whole time. (that's not a pun, zombies don't have claws.)
Finally I would like to say to the person who said the posed shot was not very Romero, remember the promo still for DAWN OF THE DEAD where the heroes were all in a badass pose with guns? I think this is in that tradition. -
Since its being filmed by film students, we should expect little to no shaky cam. That's something overused that we wouldn't miss.
Anyways, Funny fact, but Leguizamo (Just one of the many Hollywood actors hired onto the movie just for the name value), still hasn't come back to Canada since the filming of land. -
I'm not a zombie geek, just want a good movie.Diary Of The Dead sounds somewhat interesting now, though I like Quint's idea a lot better.

Never understood the hatred directed at that flick, it's a good solid follow-up to Day and is certainly more intelligent that virtually all the horror films coming out these days. Is it better than Night, Dawn, and Day? Well, no, not in my opinion, but it deserves more respect than it currently gets. In some pretentious film magazines like Film Comment I've read people praise the film, but for the most part it's been rather ignored since it's release.

how about securing some information about how he got fucked by the producers on "Land"? Remember when Romero was riffing on how his director's cut would be like Kubrick's "Eye's Wide Shut" and he was gonna green screen zombies in front of the action to obscure it which he would remove later for the DC? What happened? The green screen zombies remained and the pussy producers on the commentary said things like "Ooh, that's disgusting. We didn't want to show you any more of that". IT'S A FUCKING GEORGE ROMERO ZOMBIE MOVIE YOU ASSHOLES! Most of the gory bits of the movie got left on the cutting room floor. Witness the "Scenes of carnage" extra on the DVD. Where were the soldiers screaming for the mommies as their guts were pulled out? Is it taboo to show that when the US is at war or something? Thank god Romero is back doing his own thing without hack producers censoring Old George.

The idea you just suggested above is fucking amazing, and I guarantee you it will be stolen. If I wasn't busy moving house I would steal it myself, to be perfectly frank. I mean, really, setting aside your lame Beatles joke, 'zombie horror on a submarine' is damned brilliant... it has echoes of conceptual familiarity (monster(s) in a confined space) and a hip cachet (zombies), to comfort conservative backers/producers. It would require a minimal set and a small cast, and it would be super-intense, besides a concept I simply haven't seen before (and no, the Fulci "zombie fighting a shark," while awesome, doesn't count). Has this been done? It must have been done. I'm off to try to find out if it has or hasn't been done, and if it hasn't, for all that I'm busy moving, I fucking will steal it.

that "vampires in the arctic" thing is exactly what I thought of when contemplating your submarine zombie idea. Don't tell me that vampires in the arctic night idea was yours too, I thought that was based on a 2002 comic miniseries?
And living in Michigan is no excuse, man, this is the internet age! Unless you live in the U.P. there are surely filmmakers around you somewhere, whether in Ann Arbor or Detroit or wherever. Don't waste your obviously good ideas and creativity on a talkback, get a basic screenwriting book, write a basic screenplay... and if you can't find someone who wants to direct it, on your local craigslist or whatever, then hell, do it yourself! My best friend from highschool produces supercheap digital-film indie gore/splatter movies and whatever one may think of the films themeselves, he actually makes a decent living at it... it is very possible!

recently that would make fantastic films.. Plague of the Dead (The Morningstar Strain) and World War Z, unfortunately the budgets would be huge as these deal with global outbreaks but fuck me if they werent great stories especially world war Z told through loads of different accounts of the aftermath of a zombie war, as for Romero as much as i love the dudes older films, Land fucking ruined it for me, i was so hyped for that film that it took 3 showings to fully watch it was so terrible

For the record: I liked Land of the Dead. It was a nice throwback to Dawn of the Dead, sadly thought the characters weren't as good.
I really wish Romero would've done more movies between 1990-2004. I guess he had a lot of stuff in development, but nothing really got off the ground. And the stuff that did was either heavily mangled (Dark Half) or direct to video (Bruiser). -
with a grain of salt I contribute that Romero sucks. I'm always baffled that budgets are allotted for this crap with so many other decent ideas floating around. (Sigh!)

As an autograph collector, I once mailed a "Dawn of the Dead" lobby card poster to Romero along with a letter asking him, among other things, whatever became of "The Stand" adaptation (obviously before the ABC version was made). Along with my signed poster was a handwritten letter on Sanibel Films stationery(as he was working out of Florida at the time). His response was "As for 'The Stand,' it looks like it's stalled. Seems nobody wants to finance an expensive, three-hour movie these days." But as it turns out, ABC was willing to finance an expensive 6-hour miniseries for television a couple years later. So there you have it. It would have been interesting to see if his cast would been "name" actors (ala "Creepshow") or if they would been more "no names" like Night/Dawn/Day. I say the latter way would have worked much better with "The Stand" as it would have seemed like events were happening to real people instead of Rob Lowe, "My Favorite Martian," that chick from "Sixteen Candles", and Dauber from "Coach." In fact, they handled everything wrong with casting. The one person who SHOULD have been played by a famous person was the character of Larry Underwood, the musician ("Baby, Can you Dig Your Man?"), who in the book keeps being told by everybody, "Hey, aren't you...?" Instead, he was played by relative nobody Adam Storke. But, I digress...

Thats the Living Dead Film I want to see.-----------------------------You have people living in a walled in world. Just like Logans Run. They have no clue about the Zombie threat outside the city. They are policed and monitored by robots. Very I Robot/THX 1138. They have a live in friend robot, and cruel do as I say don't disobey type enforcer bots outside of their housings. They are forced to repair the robots, and farm. They eat a paste like substance that is a multimix of proteins and vitamins. A group of teens is tired of this walled in lifestyle, they read books and watch movies about a world they aren't seeing. When people reach a certain age they are moved to a new community called the silver zone. The teens decide to sneak onboard the silver zone train. When it takes off the lights go out and a voice tells the old people that they will give life as they have taken it. The train stops the windows roll down and robots shoot and kill the old people with electric devices. Our teens where under the trains floor boards. So they hear and see everything. They watch as the dead bodies are rolled out and taken to a service plant and made into food. Solyent green.
They are detected at somepoint during theyre spy-on
They escape capture and break out of the city. Only to find a massive Zombie threat outside. One of them is bitten. They find an abandoned flying craft and they use it too re-enter the city. They assault the robots and try to tell everyone the truth. The plague spreads. The robots go into self preservation mode. Our group tries to save their friends and assemble an attack on both the dead, the robots, and who ever is behind the management of the city. A time device is found near the end that was made in hopes of going back in time to stop the Zombie plague before it began. The threat is explained as coming from a returning Nasa made space probe. The year is 3102. -
I have never understood the massive hardon people have for zombie movies. If you've seen the two or three great ones, you've seen them all. I didn't even like Shaun of the Dead, but I can appreciate why it was such a hit - film execs shoulda just let Shaun be the end of it, and stop pumping out this midless crap. Romero might have made a couple of visionary films, but these stinking turds keep on showing up at the cinema. Do teenagers even still go to see them??

No damm clue when its gonna hit. We can only pray that someone does it right. I figure that if you gave a bunch of film students the allowance to make a short film based off of both of Brooks zombie books, then you will see something good. Yes, given some direction, the survival guide can be assembled into a series of brief video segments. Anyways, if your gonna bash the genre or the movies, don't just say it sucks, that doesn't say anything to the studios about how the movies are bad. Thats how come it takes so damm long to make these movies, or why some are never thought of. I'm quite sure if they got some good opinions, they might listen. Nothing can save the Resident Evil movie franchise. Even more since capcom is taking parts of the movie and retconning it into the new wii game.

I don't know if it's shit relative to other zombie movies, but I do think that it's a shitty movie, period. It was not scary, and the supposedly big ideas behind it - that rich people will fight to maintain their status and that they will try to buy their way out of trouble, but when the world's gone to hell even they might not be able to save themselves - are about as deep as those on a "very special" episode of Mr. Belevedere. Actually, the movie's entire premise seems to be flawed from a horror movie perspective, in that it is very difficult, or perhaps impossible, to be terrified by characters with which the director wants you to sympathize (here, the zombies).

The goriest thing by far associated with that movie was the mouldering, disfigured, violated corpse of Subtlety...which was already terminally ill by the time of Dawn. Land was so bad it actually dragged the other Dead movies down with it. It was shock therapy to deprogram me from the Cult of Romero. P.S. Sky flowers = Land of the Dead.

Just because I saw Land of the Dead is a shit movie doesn't instanly mean that there is a horror movie worthy of Citizen Kane status, it just means that aside from the fact that Land of the Dead was a horror movie, it was a shit movie too. There is no citizen kane of horror movies, that would kind of defeat the purpose of the genre, you can still have a quality horror movie though, just not a deep thinker....
Land of the Dead was right up there with Super Mario Bros. movie on the piece of shit movie shelf -

A film buddy of mine went over to the Cannes Film Market (the downscale sell-a-thon bazaar that runs concurrently with the upscale Cannes Film Festival), and he counted 44 zombie movies from various production companies walking amid all the booths and stalls. Yes, 44. The only new zombie movies I wanna see right now are WWZ -- but done as an HBO series with NO STARS in pseudo-documentary style (a geek can dream, can't he?) and the movie version of Kirkman's b/w comics THE WALKING DEAD (although that would make an awesome series too), particularly the whole big chunk that happens in the prison - man, wouldn't that be fun?!

Enough is enough already. Romero is just trying to cash in the "re-birth" of zombie movies. Land of the Dead was horrible. I repeat: HORRIBLE. In fact, the majority of his movies are bad. But, myopic superfans feel it necessary to pay homage to him. He made a couple of good horror films, he did not reinvent film. Now he is just a hack. We need another zombie film like we need another vampire film.

After "28 Days Later" and Zack Snyder's balls-to-the-wall "Dawn of the Dead," Land's allegorical Evil-White-Establishment-and-Zombies-are-really-us ,blah, blah, blah, bored the shit out of me. Simon Baker, Asia Argento and Leguizamo were good but Romero's plot was a re-tread. And what was the deal with money still being relevant? The collapse of civilization would make money totally worthless. Humanity would go back to the barter system and the only "currency" would be food, fresh water, medicine and guns- with ammo of course!

christ, for someone portraying himself as the arbiter of good taste and intellect you like some shitty films. Land was trite, cliched, and unimaginitive. Tonally, it was similar to a feature length car commercial for Dead Reckoning. There was not one interesting or salient analogy made in it. I quite enjoyed it, but I tend to love zombie films regardless of quality. I wouldn't recommend it, nor would I call it intelligent.

it was so in your face, so up there for all to see without an ounce of subtlety that it made the whole thing a joke in my eyes, i really couldn't stand it, it was obvious in Dawn but fuck me he really put it out there in Land, it may be his way of adding more depth to his movies (i disagree, i think he handles it like a kid) but he needs to be more subtle with it and because of Land I'm viewing this new one with caution, it'll be a download for me

early films, they scared the fuck outa me and got me into zombies and i still think there great to watch today (if somewhat dated) but i sincerely hope hes free to really make me eat my words with some left over human leg and intestines, i just want to see another really cool zombie flick, pity Jack Snyder didn't do a sequel to his killer dawn remake..

Anyone whose ever tried to explain allegory, political or otherwise, in a zombie film to me ended up sounding like a pseudo-intellectual moron.
I love zombie movies becuase even though they're violent and gory and there's lots of swearing, guns and tits- some of the most clever, intelligently filmed scenes in horror have come out of them.
And this is the part where someone needs to try to yet again explain allegory in zombie movies to me and thus prove my point.

Looking at the photo, I'm speculating that the cameraman and girl-in-white will be the likely survivors. The archer with the glasses will likely be victim #2. Sorry, LAND OF THE DEAD was a turd. It's "political" metaphor was so fucking uncontrained (I expected the action to freeze, follwed by an iris-in of George Romero inquiring, "Did you get the whole Dennis Hopper thing? My zombie films are non-ambiguous allegory."). And the ending was really lame. Not unlike a Gene Autry (musical) western, everyone retreats to their preferred transport; and the hero refuses to waste the zombie catalyst who's responsible for wiping-out humans (the hero laughs, shrugs and spits-out neglible dialogue). The scenario retreated from the impassioned ending of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD where Romero (accidentally?) scored a message without sinking into political distribe. I also dislike DAY OF THE DEAD (military/bad, woman/saint, should be canonized). The awful acting was shouted with the hubris of a high school play. George, make zombie movies--stop trying to camouflage your stuff and stereotypes as Grand Guignol "Politics.001."

Man, what do you have to do to get respect? Even if GAR made a movie about a zombie's turd that would still be more interesting than say, Scream or Final Destination or whatever happens to pass as scary. I like the idea that the new movie would be a reinterpretation of NOTLD. Because if there is anything that is my favorite part of zombie flicks is the WTF attitude of the media and characters in the movie. Seriously, JG's remake of Dawn did that best- I wish they would make a movie of just all the media reports. I love that stuff. But I guess I'll get that when KFC comes out with a Skin Bucket.
The only thing wrong with the Dawn remake was there was not a lot of flesh-eating. Even Shaun had more of that!
Personally, I liked Land. I hope Diary is good. I know it's not going to be worse than say, Burial Ground-- Which I saw in theatre when it came out- not THAT was utter trash. -
