An In-Depth Video Interview With HEROES Mastermind Tim Kring!!

Published at:  Aug 11, 2007 9:40:24 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Not much news in this video; it’s just an interesting, in-depth chat with writer-producer Tim Kring, who had a long career in Hollywood before “Heroes” made him a household name last year. Learn that:

* Kring’s father was a track coach and amateur filmmaker. Kring went into USC film school with an ambition to become a cinematographer.

* The first script Kring sold, for $17,000, was a “Knight Rider” episode about KITT the talking car falling under the influence of voodoo.

* “Night Rider” was written largely by a lot of fiftysomething and sixtysomething retired ex-cops.

* Born in 1957 to left-leaning Bay Area parents, Kring played guitar and grew up a big fan of folk music. His heroes in high school were Bob Dylan, Neil Young, John Lennon, Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie.

* The first series Kring created, the coroner drama “Crossing Jordan,” came to be because Kring wanted to make a series about a female sheriff and NBC wanted to make a show about a female coroner.

* Kring long wanted to make “Crossing Jordan” more an ensemble, serialized affair similar to “Heroes,” but was hampered at the time by NBC, which wanted more of a “Law & Order”-type procedural. The network changed its thinking after it saw the amount of success ABC was enjoying with “Lost.”

* Kring’s initial draft of the “Heroes” pilot was an hour long, but NBC had him expand it to two hours. (The first episode would up being cut back down to an hour.)

* Though only one or two people are credited with writing each of the episodes, almost every episode of “Heroes’” first season was written by the show’s entire 11-man writing staff. Kring says he couldn’t really send writers off alone for three weeks to write individual episodes, because the direction of the show kept evolving too rapidly.

    Heroes

    by kree42

The show is good ,very good ,however the fact the creator claims to have never read any comicbooks chaps my ass. I call bullshit as a good portion of the first season seemed to be taken from Watchmen. Having said all that I do rather like the show.

I don't believe for one bit

    by filmstu2005

I dont believe for one min that Tim Kring has never read a comic book. He mustve come into contact with some form of comic book in some way b/c his ides reflect the books themselves and he's not that big of a film genius. Heroes isnt even all that. It has many flaws and many plotholes but its ability to SHOCK is what grabs u.

Kring himself wrote the Heroes finale and if he wrote that crap then that shows how much of a "genius" he really is. It was terrible writing on his part and he knows it. Its like he thought he could dupe the viewers into fallin for that 1-hour b.s. Should have, COULD have been better. Heroes Season 2 finale better be better.

    People Like This Show Because...Why?

    by prankster

I'm truly baffled by the amount of love this show gets. The dialogue is nosebleed-inducingly bad, and, as has already been pointed out, the plots are blatantly stolen, mostly from comics. Worst of all, the show is constantly setting up cool ideas and then completely failing to deliver. The payoffs, particularly that embarassingly bad finale, have been lame across the boad. It's certainly watchable in a junk-food sort of way, but people who claim to have abandoned far superior genre shows like BSG and Lost "because Heroes is better" make my head hurt.

    I can't watch Lost

    by filmstu2005

I just cant. I never saw it when it first came out, but it doesnt grab me like Heroes does, even though Heroes does drag on and on (especially in the first part of the season)

I have caught very few episodes of Lost from time to time. Probably sat down to watch 5. But the one thing about Lost that I can watch are the season finales, and those so far have NEVER disappointed. Well, the first season finale was kinda confusing but I agree that Heroes usually always fails to deliver.

"NBC wanted to make a show about a female coroner"

    by newc0253

really? did they market test or something and discover that? "According to our research, 77% of the 18-49 age group and 89% of the urban professional bracket want to see more shows about female coroners on tv. Also shows about giant robots fighting".

    by danowen

You watch the Lost season finales and enjoy them, despite having only watched 5 ordinary episodes?? Shit... if you're somehow able to enjoy the resolutions/pay-offs to season-length storylines... Lost should blow your mind if you'd bother to watch it!!! Insanity. Oh yeah, and Heroes is great fun, but very flawed and all over the place after its 11th episode of s1.

    Knight Rider script

    by knightrider

K.I.T.T. wasn't under the influence of voodoo... nor was Michael Knight -- it was about a con artist who pretended to be a voodoo princess. It was the last episode they ever made of that show, and by far the very very worst.

LOL @ people who have "only seen a few episodes"

    by turketron

I have to laugh at people who have "only seen a few episodes" of any of these shows with an ongoing story (especially Lost, BSG, Heroes, The Wire, etc.). That's almost the equivalent of flipping through a novel and only bothering to read the last page of each chapter. What's the point? Why bother at all?

I'll never be able to explain fuckery such as this.

I did Season 1 as a graphic novel.

    by bswise

Because I don't watch TV [consider this, never seeing commercials really clears the mind of a lot of useless BS], I downloaded the season finale one night at about 11:00 and realized that there would be no way in Hades that I could possibly follow the plot. So, I started reading the episode summaries on the network's Web site (complete with pictures of each scene). It was a slog, but by 2 AM I was up-to-date on everyone’s arc and incredibly pumped to finally watch the finale. OK, so some of the acting wasn't as great as I'd imagined it to be, and the final showdown was a wee bit underwhelming, but overall, I still had a rocking good time with it. Hoping that the Season 2 finale goes in a more Dragonball-Z direction.

Maybe I was Wrong about Heroes

    by _maltheus_

I really liked Heroes, but knowing that Kring did the Knight Rider voodoo episode doesn't leave me with much confidence. That's a nice chunk of change for one script though. Now they've given us all a reason to nit-pick our favorite shows a little more. Fucker's need to start earning their money. To all those who don't get Heroes, the trick is to watch it like a summer popcorn flick. It's all about the fun and living vicariously through someone elses' powers. It's not meant to be the Wire or some probing social drama. If you can't watch it with that distinction in mind, then you'll ever be able to enjoy it. And a disappointing finale shouldn't taint all that came before it. Everyone was loving it before that night. I'm sure Kring has learned and the season 2 finale will be freakin' incredible. Look how far he's come since that voodoo Knight Rider.
