The World Premiere of THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT Trailer!!!

Published at:  Apr 03, 1999 2:22:01 AM CST

Alright folks.... The people behind THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT have decided to give AICN the world premiere of their first teaser trailer. This is a movie unlike what you have seen in your memory. It's not Hollywood effects, it's not judged reactions and taut pacing. This is a disarming film that will reward those that sit in the darkened theater on a dark and stormy night. Chills will rip through you as you stumble to your car telling yourself... "That was fake... It Had to Be... Didn't it? Things like that don't happen... Do they?" This isn't a gore film, it's not a makeup extravaganza... It's about that which goes bump in the night, and I, for one, am proud to give you the first look at this trailer.

There are two links for this teaser, pick your choice and turn off the lights, turn off your fan... and listen and watch. TRAILER LINK #1 andTRAILER LINK #2. Also the official site went online as well at BlairWitch.com! Enjoy...

What on Earth did that previous message mean? That someone's betting that this movie is composed of actual footage from an actual "witch project?" Tell me that's not it, please...

I love the sightings/mysteries of the unknown/unsolved mysteries genre. They really get to me. I hadn't paid any attention to this movie until I went to the official site and then watched the trailer...OH MY GOD! I am so friggin intrigued by this. Now I'm gonna do all the research on this that I can...I'm an addict now! This year is gonna bust my ass. First there was the Matrix...drool...Then the movie to end all movies next month!!!! Then we get Eyes Wide Shut, Blair Witch and Dogma! This is going to be THE year for movies! ---out.

    question?

    by mrmagwitch

Is there suppose to be sound or is there really just several seconds of nothing in th etrailer? if so can someone tell me where i can download a version where i can hear the sound.

My two cents on this movie after reading the website is that it seems alittle too taboo and fucked up if they are going to think up something like this for entertainment purposes. My money says it's either based on events, or is indeed as true as all the information on the web site.

Best Trailer I've Seen All Year

    by mrbeaks

This is how you sell a film. All you have to do is engage the ol' imagination, not give away every single plot twist in the film (as last year's awful trailer for THE NEGOTIATOR did.) By showing so little, they've not only completely spooked me, but they've also conveyed the sense that they're obviously very confident about the film in question. Trailers like this should be standard viewing for the marketing "wunderkinds" employed by all the major studios. It's all in the presentation, folks. On another note, I'd hate to see what the Brothers Weinstein would've cooked up for TBWP had they bought it. Oh, but I forget..... Miramax only pays top dollar for the safest, most unremarkable films at any given festival. Champions of the independent filmmaker, indeed!

the perfect way to do a trailer

    by spike lee

Congrats to the Blair Witch Project, the best trailer I have seen for a long time. NOTHING WAS GIVEN AWAY!!!!You mean we have to pay $7 to find out everything? God Bless You! This film will be a hit, and will have a life after art house, where I am sure Artisian will send it first. Will the Blair Witch Project bring back a coolness to horror, and show filmmakers that horror can be top notch genre to pursure? It has been too long since Kubrick's the Shining!

Wow, great website for TBWP! Reminds me of the legend of Big Liz in the area that I grew up in on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. We used to go to Decorsey Bridge and try to summon the ghost of Big Liz, of course we never did, but it gives me chills just thinking about it the way this new film does, can't wait!

    The Concept reminds me of...

    by the cleaner

"Charlie Mopic", a vietnam movie shot in first person perspective. The viewer becomes a member of a team of american soldiers on patrol in vietnam. The viewer is given the name "Charlie Mopic", for "MOtion PICture". It was quite a well done show, very harrowing. I am looking forward to this "Blaire Witch" thing solely based on that trailer, it is excellent. If that trailer is an example of how chilling the rest of the show is, this will become a horror classic. I had a shiver run up my spine while I watched that thing. In these days of special effects driven shows, this will be a welcome throwback.

THIS is what real horror is!

    by w. leach

A real horror film is one in which the viewer actually feels as if he or she is in the bowels of hell, and when it's all over, the viewer staggers out of the theater in a daze. Very few films have this effect on the general moviegoer. Most of us (myself included) laugh at horror films that are meant to scare us. We know everything on screen is fake, from the knife to the blood. A film like THE BLAIR WHICH PROJECT simply SUGGESTS the horror, which is more creepy than any psycho with a knife flick. I know this will be a film that I will not forget. I'm sure it will upset many people, rather than entertain. Judging from the reviews I've read (mostly from this site), and the trailer, this is definitely NOT a popcorn movie. All I know is, when this movie comes to my local theater, I'll be there opening day. I have seen the future of horror. It is THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT.

Thank goodness for a common sense trailer. I hate the ones that give everything away (Like the Negotiator and the Mother of all blowouts, the 4 mins. of Forrest Gump that not only showed you every single famous person he was
going to meet but elevated what is really a sweet gentle movie to some sort of quasi-religious level. "Your life will never be the same..." It's like, you've just saved me my admission price.
So, anyway, THIS was great. Not unlike the Shining trailer. A hotel corridor fills up with blood. It sticks with you.

Harry: When will this trailer be shipped to theaters?

    by hal9000

Hot damn! This really made my day. Now this is what I call a teaser: Short, precise, and it leaves the audience yearning for more. Harry, I'm a certified projectionist, and I'm going to make it my mission to attatch this trailer on a mass quantity of films. Do you have any idea when it's going to be shipped to theaters? This film just earned a #3 spot on my top ten films to see for summer 99 (trailing behind Eyes Wide Shut and Episode I). I think that this movie will restore our faith in the belief that the horror genre does not entirely consist of in jokes and overkilled ninetys pop culture. I really want to see this one man.

    Bogus EWS trailer revealed!

    by edward peregrine

If anyone still cares, I solved the mystery of the "suspended phone" suspected of being the EYES WIDE SHUT teaser. It is a spot to promote Coca-Cola's "Coke Card" campaign, the "logo" being a "watermark" of a Coke bottle on a napkin and the initials iydkydg (also the name of the website) standing for "if you don't know you don't go." A banal response to a large hope, but I must say it was effective in getting my attention--JUST LIKE THIS TEASER FOR BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. Hollywood trailer makers pay attention--keep it short, secret, and leave us scratching our heads.

    Lane Myers Stays

    by loki trickster

Lane can be a prick, but you have no right to ban him whatsoever. Being annoying has never been a crime in America. Pick up your U.S. Constitution...every Boy Scout should carry them (okay, the scouts kicked me out, but I still have my copy)...now, some of you are going to quibble and say that the first amendment just says that Congress shall make no laws abridging freedom of speech, religion, etc. But I think Harry believes in the first amendment...that's one of the reasons he set up this site...to set up personal interaction and opinion about movies...that's why the talkbacks are set up. If you don't like it, you don't have to read. If you don't like Lane's opinion, ignore it. But if Harry starts banning people because they're obnoxious, then I leave (if I'm not kicked out first), and I'm sure others will go with me. Someone should only be banned if they're blatanly over-the-top offensive and threatening...and Lane has yet to cross that line. Lane treats the Talk backs like they belong to him because they do...they belong to anyone with a computer who understands how to type. So suck it up and deal with it the best you can. -Loki

    Blair Witch

    by thekellysisters

Okay, back to the subject at hand.....
This may be the best trailer I have ever seen. This flick has such a great idea and such great motivation that even if it is fake it would still be out of this world. I read the Mythology section of the website and then watched the trailer. JESUS CHRIST! I got chills from thirty seconds of choppy video sitting in my own home with all of the lights on. This flick makes the right use of all of the right tools. It's a documentary so that you know the characters are real and you care dearly about them. What the trailer did was to show you a girl that you didn't know, but that you already cared about. It showed you that her two friends were dead and that she knew that she was going to die. There was no doubt in her mind that she was going to die. She apologized to her mother! She knows she's in for it. Then the ingenious shot of her face half-way lit. Jesus Christ.....that terrified me......"I am so scared." Such a simple sentence, but such an impact! Because of this trailer, The Blair Witch Project is #1 on my list of must see movies of 1999. I just hope that a piss-ant town like Nashville will actually carry it. If anyone gets ANY new news about TBWP, PLEASE email it to me at dante@the-projector.com

    Another Lane Myer opinion

    by martin q blank

Sorry AntiConformist. Judging by your e-mail campaign you seem very determined to get rid of Lane Myers, but sorry, I won't support your quest. My reasons aren't just blind first amendment shit, but *** a) he inspires conversation *** b) he's fun to read *** and most importantly c) he likes John Cusack movies. (Having spoken to him very briefly via e-mail he seems alright, however he unfortunately feels that the only way to get an opinion across is to be loud and annoying. He's probably right.) ****** PS For someone named AntiConformist, you work pretty hard to defy your name.

    by harry knowles

And any of you assholes that think otherwise can simply "GO SCREW". The whole point of TALK BACK is to talk... be it a short comment or an entire lecture on the subject. What it wasn't meant to do is advertise, be offensively ignorant and slanderous, and be a haven of spoilerish material. Lane typically follows those rules. You can cuss (though not in the Subject line please!) you can be rude... but ya have to back it all up with thought.... Tough I know... but it's fundemental. No email campaign will cause me to Ban anyone.... Only their actions will. So buddy... go take a hike. The man stays! Though banning Loki for a day or two may be fun.... (just kidding)

The 'Fix AICN' campaign Part 2: calling all net wizards

    by martin q blank

Attention all net wizards. Do you know what is wrong with AICN? You see, if the constant 'Document Contains No Data' queries are caused by bad code/configuration, or server overload? If it is overload then there's probably not much that can be done, as AICN is not rich. (Although, if it was straight overload, wouldn't the front page be affected? I personally never have trouble loading the front page, but always have difficulty loading every other page. Which leads me to believe it might just be a code problem. But I don't know what I'm talking about, does anyone?)

You're All In For a Disappointment

    by writer man

No, I'm not going to tell you that this film stinks or that the filmakers are untalented. But this whole thing is being pulled over everyone's eyes by the marketing people. Trust me, you'll understand when you see the film. First off, the trailer is twice as good as the film, and it shows that some good people put it together. The movie is decent. The concept blatantly plagorizes a relatively unknown, but extremely well done film called CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST which is shot entirely on 16mm, tells the story of a group of teens who go into the woods, are all killed, and whose footage is "found" years later. Sound familiar? I thought so. TBWP is good, but again, if you've seen C.H., it's kind of hard to consider their concept anything but stolen. As for the scary stuff, well, all I can say is... you'll see why I was disappointed once you watch the film. Like most of you, I was extremely psyched to get a look at this thing, but unfortunately, it didn;t come EVEN CLOSE to the hype that's been generated around it.

Actually, a message for Lane and the conformist

    by martin q blank

Hmmm, I just was in the weekly update talkback and reading Lane Myers posts. Two things. First, Conformist, you get offended pretty easily. Second, Lane you really need someone to talk to. You sound to me to be a very restrained, quiet person who is having trouble expressing themselves. Go shout from a rooftop or somesuch, then comeback and write something productive. PS What the hell happened to your supposed retiring? Looking back, that was just a cry for attention. So Lane, we're sorry that you have a shitty life and feel that the only way to get yourself heard is to be loud and obnoxious. No hard feelings. But get on with it man.

It's got to be just a movie. If this had really happened, it would be on the news, right? (I'm reminded of the people who ask if I've "figured out"that William Goldman wrote all of "The Princess Bride" himself and didn't really have it read to him as a kid.) By the way, I think everybody has a right to talk back, as long as it doesn't degenerate into personal abuse.

I've been asked to support Lane Myers removal

    by blink

I'm not exactly sure how long-standing this feud is between certain parties and Lane Myers, but if this petition for removal of Myers from the talk-back venue is based on his comments on the 60 minutes Lucas spot, that really isn't much to go on. I agree with many of Myers comments about over exposure and still count myself a major fan of both Lucas and SW. Hell, SW was the first movie I ever saw. I was 7 years old in 1977, and my dad took me to see it in Brunswick, Maine. SW the most important movie I ever saw, and it has influenced my life like no other. But it doesn't make it the best movie I ever saw, and to suggest that it is is pretty miopic, and to defend it with your reputation is downright silly. ........I went back through all the comments on the SW 60 min talk-back and found that Lane Myers' innitial post was pretty up front and straight forward criticism of the contemporary SW phenomenon, and he became offensive only later when he was attacked directly by name, and even then he did not single anyone out as far as I can tell. ........And this idea of actually e-mailing him to vent your spleen about his comments is inappropriate. Direct e-mailing should only be done in order to further a constructive dialogue, not to harrass. I have some idea how he must feel, considering that the first time I ever even engaged in a talk-back on AICN (re: the 60 min Lucas talk-back last week) I received a request via personal e-mail to sign a petition to remove Lane Myers. As I said, I am more than happy to receive e-mail privately to further a specific, good-natured and constructive dialogue, and that is why I registered for AICN talk-back. But I take offence to being contacted merely to be asked to support someone's personal vendetta against a guy who has done nothing more than post an unpopular opinion. ........I am a writer and a graphic artist, and speaking from experience a project, much like a debate, is only as interesting as its most contrary criticism. All fans of SW, indeed anyone who has interest in anything (which includes practically everyone), should welcome differing opinions, it makes the world of fandom a lot richer. I do not support the removal of Lane Myers from talk back.........I will cc this post via e-mail to the individual who contacted me.

You're a whiny little bitch who doesn't like other people's opinions....and, like that other poster said, maybe you need to rethink your choice of screen name, speaking of hipocrisy. Take your e-mail and shove them up your tight ass you fancy-ass little trick! Don't contact me! Argh! I HATE PEOPLE!!!!

I love to read the talk backs, and especially Lane Myers. He is a great writer, and very film savvy. Lane's post are also very funny. I bet that Lane is reading about being banned and just laughing. He's got you. By the way, where is L'auteur, I have not seen him on in awile?

    BWP (And more)

    by loki trickster

*begin whiney pleading voice* Come on Harry, what have I ever done to you? *end whiney pleading voice* Now, on to business. Does anyone know when TBWP will be released? I watched this trailer yesterday in broad daylight and it scared the shit out of me...I used to be afraid of the dark, and this looks like the film to revive that fear. There's no exact release date on the website though...it just says "summer". And for those of you who wonder, this film is fiction. It's not really the recovered footage of three lost college students. If you go to the Haxan homepage (www.haxan.com, I believe), they'll tell you as much. Or you can just trust uncle Loki here; it'll save you time, and I've never betrayed your trust before...except for that other time...if you tell anyone about that, I'll gut you like a fish. :) -Loki

    BAN THE AMERICAN PSYCHO

    by american psycho

I found myself completely offended by what one of your suscribers, THE AMERICAN PSYCHO, had to say....I think I should ban myself, as i am a danger to myself and others. For everyone's amusement, I'd like to give you a peek at an E-Mail I just got from one of these Anti-LaneMyers characters....however, it should be said that Lane and I have been talking and we believe it's one guy with several screen names...Here it is, enjoy the ignorance, folks:
"You've some fucking nerve to talk about hipocrisy and stupid names AMERICAN FUCKING PSYCHO INDEED!! You should behave a little more like that grand title and stop sucking Myers' dick!! He's a long winded fuck that deserves all the bullshit that comes his way!! As for AC99, well, it appears as though his campaign to rid AICN of Myers is dead in the water...etc.etc....You stop whining, AMERICAN PUSSY!!!"
LOL, LOL, LOL, This was hilarity at its' finest, folks! Enjoy this nutiness,

    by lloyd dobler

You want to know why? Because of that fucking trailer man. After I saw that, I was intrigued so I went to the blair witch homepage. There is some freaky shit oon there man, because there treating it as if it was real. (I know it's not, but it's just scarier to think that it is.) I read everything I could about it, and now I can't wait to see it. I can't wait to bring my girlfriend, and before it starts tell her that it is a true story, and watch her freak out. Trust me guys, if you know it's fake, don't tell any one who hasn't seen it. Scare the shit out of them, and then tell them after. Oh, and Lane. I don't agree with the guy a lot, but if we got kicked off just because people didn't like what we were saying, then none of us would be here.

    On Banning

    by mrbeaks

Whenever some misguided fool broaches the subject of banning something that offends their sensibilities, you can be sure of two things: 1) They lack the intellect to mount a credible response countering the source of their ire; thus, the need to ban, and 2) They are, without exception, a card carrying Republican. Truth be told, though, I pity this Anit-Conformist fellow..... Lane's vitriolic enough without provocation. I hate to see how nasty he can get after someone actively seeks to remove him from the Talk Back.

    BWP is amazing

    by copernicus

Being one of the luckiest bastards in the universe for having seen TBWP already (at least an early form), I have to tell you that the guy that said that it was just marketing hype has absolutely no idea what he is talking about. Marketing for this movie doesn't exist yet. Instead we are seeing the fervent devotion of fans that have seen the movie, trailer, or website and are desperate for any more info. This information isn't being pushed on us by marketing people, it is being pulled out of the filmmakers (and Artisan) by hungry fans. All of the geekasms about the movie are from people that have seen the movie and are in utter disbelief at its coolness. This movie will be taught in film school starting next year! This movie does one thing better than any movie ever: versimilitude. I knew it was just a movie going in. But there are so many little details, so many perfect shots (by being non-perfect, like a camcorder really would be), so many lines that could not possibly be scripted.
This movie seems more real than any other movie I've ever seen. After we saw it, Harry, Moriarty, and the rest of us went out to breakfast and just talked about how much it was going to revolutionize things for hours. Then when I dropped Harry off, I had the most unusual sensation: I was afraid of the dark! Unbelievable.

    Blair Witch and banning

    by nordling

Man, I can't wait to see this one. That trailer creeped me out. "...oh god i'm so scared...", yes in lower caps, to show the ptiful and plaintive begging of someone in fear for more than her life. This year is turning out to be pretty good. Matrix rocked, Episode 1 should rock, Dogma, Eyes Wide Shut, The Green Mile, and this one. That's more potential than I've seen in the past few years. And as for Anti-Conformist99's rant against Lane Myers for supposed political offenses, at first it made me wish violence on the boy at the basic cellular level, to unmake him, as it were. But then we must realize that their is difference of opinion out there, even at the Gump intellect level. I'm sure most of Anti-Conformist's days are filled with that undying question for those of his brain power - "Ding-Dong or Twinkie? Ding-Dong or Twinkie?" Besides, wishes sometimes come true. It has for me, and maybe it will happen again. Too bad his mother didn't invest in a wire hanger...

BWP not real, just really imaginative.

    by el greco

For those of you who want to believe it is real, go on ahead. But in American Cinematographer (Matrix isuue) they talk about how the directors made it seem like a real experience. Hence the word verisimilitude. Anyway, they liken this movie to Pi in it's being a clever stab at making movies. I'm going to see it.

I was extremely lucky to see TBWP about four weeks ago at a screening that Artisan held for my work - and let me just say that the film ROCKED! I plan on seeing it again the day it comes out, and again and again. Also: someone should give the kids in this film an Academy Award. I know Oscars don't mean shit, but until the film community comes up with a better award system, then the Oscars will have to do. Anyway, GO SEE THIS MOVIE!! All the Kevin Williamson/teen/slasher/ironic horror-bullshit that has been coming out the past few years is now definitively OVER OVER OVER. I can't wait to see the projects that come after TBWP, both by the filmmakers that made it and by those influenced by it. Hooray for a return to REAL horror!

Lane, please tell me whether you were joking or not about the Republican Manifesto forwarded to you...please tell me you were joking...I shudder to think that there are people supporting the "Holy Republican Party" and trying to wipe out the "homosexual pox". Did he warn against the liberal plot (of which I am happily a part of) to sap and impurify our precious bodily fluids? by kadabra

Some of you are a bunch of childish brats. I can't believe you would try to set up a vote to get someone banned from talk back just because you don't like their opinions! That's pathetic. I mean, their typed words at the bottom of web page bother you so much that you want to try and ban him! (Obviously they do) Isn't the point of talk back to hear what people have to say, like them or not? Come on, what's the point of talk back if you try to ban anyone who adds their own thoughts, apperently the "wrong thoughts." If you are sick of hearing what Lane Myers has to say, then simply DON'T READ what Lane myers has to say.

    by anticonformist99

I can see from the amount of Liberal Filth, that no one respects a REAL AMERCIAN!! You people don't understand. The gay plague is wiping out the nation! Women are making more than MEN!! Face it, men are stronger, larger and BETTER than women will ever be. The Liberals are letting the criminals run loose in the streets
to RAPE and MURDER the REAL AMERICANS!!! Myers is part of the problem and you THUGS are defending him! Don't you see that you are the cause of your own ruiniation!!??
The END is near, my friends. Y2K is coming like the shadow of DEATH to wipe away the weak and impure! Those who are soft will perish in the aftermath!!! There will be a breakdown of public services OVERNIGHT!! RIOTS! RAPES! MURDERS!! CHAOS!! We must prepare our SOULS for the trials to come! Anyone who dosen't see that will DIE! It's just that simple! Life is an Animal! It consumes the weak so the strong may survive!
You mock me now, But I promise you! When EVERYTHING Falls apart, I will be on top, Myers will be under my bootheel and the TRUE AMERCIANS WILL RESHAPE THIS COUNTRY INTO THE GREATNESS IT ONCE WAS!! There will be censorship. There are some things a public need not know to be happy. There are some things no one should HAVE to know. Myers has contested and worked against me since he discovered my site! Which is no longer up due to Myers' liberal rhetoric and campaign of HATE against me!! He's against racism, I'm pro-purity. He's for Homosexualality, I'm for pro-purity. He's against the War that is coming as surely as your next breath, WELL I SAY IF YOU WANT PEACE, THEN PREPARE FOR WAR!!! There will be no room for you people in the NEW ORDER!! The only places you could occupy are workers slots. THE STRONG SHALL EMERGE VISTORIOUS!! The weak shall die or be subjugated. AMERICA SHALL BE RESHAPED INTO A HOLY POWER OF DIVINE RIGHT! NO ONE SHALL STAND AGAINST US AND AT LAST WE SHALL HAVE ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT!!!

Only one thing can be said to AC99.

    by loki trickster

I think that the only thing that we can say to that is: "Holy shit." On the one hand, I think it should be banned, on the other, I think it's as fascinating as a car wreck to read. If he's serious (and something in the fanatical meglomaniacal ravings of this madman make me think he is), then he disgraces even the Republican Party (which even allows blood-sucking vampires to join, if you trust the Simpsons...and the Simpsons never lie). He's so far gone that there's nothing to say to him. There's no way we can convince him that he's not a RAVING FUCKING LUNATIC! If it were ten years ago, I'd tell him to go to the USSR, if it were 60 years ago, I'd tell him to go to Germany. There's places for his kind there. But, he should be allowed to speak. His opinion can only strengthen our resolve to keep America from going that way. AC99, you represent everything wrong with the way people think. I wish there weren't people like you. We have three choices now. 1) Respond to him, try to convince him he's wrong...this is most likely futile. 2) Have Harry ban him, which I'm not for either. "I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." -Voltaire. Besides, the ravings of a lunatic are often rather funny. Of course, I think he might have gone over the line here. or 3) Let him speak, and just ignore what he says. Personally, I'm for the third choice. But I've said my opinion, now it's your time to choose (or to threaten my life for it, as the case may be.) -Loki

    TBWP and originality

    by mexicomay

First, the IFC show is Split Screen and if you go to the haxan.com discussion page, someone has posted a link to a site from which you can download the clips mentioned above. Secondly, all work is influenced by other work and all people are influenced by other people. When a filmmaker or other artist adopts a technique, they put their own stamp on it. As viewers, "We seldom see anew in the sense of finding something utterly unfamiliar. Instead, we see an old in a new light." Julia Cameron. I remember when RESERVOIR DOGS came out and everyone said how QT just ripped off Hong Kong cinema. I always thought that was ridiculous. QT admits to being influenced by Hong Kong films and has done a lot to popularize them in the US, but his movies are definitely American and all have a distinctly Tarantinoesque feel to them. Finally, even though I live in the buckle of the Bible belt (big D), the amount of hatred and rage some folks choose to live with never ceases to amaze and sadden.

The Blair Witch and Cannibal Holocaust

    by da wabbit

Well, there's certainly some drama afoot in this thread. But what I want to address is the notion posted way back in this Talkback that The Blair Witch Project is a ripoff of Cannibal Holocaust. While the concept of using 'found footage' to detail horrors visited upon camera crews is certainly a commonality both films share, there are huge heaping differences which I feel negate the cry of ripoff. Cannibal Holocaust, like many of the Italian cannibal horror films of the late seventies and early eighties, had much slaughter, gore, rape, and animal snuff. While there is much bandying about of "who are the savages and who is civilized?" what one gets from Cannibal Holocaust is a film which is crafted in the explicit. True to the nature of the camera, everything is shown. The Blair Witch Project, however, is a film crafted in the implicit. The gory details one gets from TBWP are of deteriorating psyches and human anger, rather than turtle torture and cheap irony. The camera is just as relentless, but instead of blood and guts (excepting a dead rat and some spattered ***** - sorry, no spoilers here), we see human minds unraveling. Or perhaps, to get even moreso pretentious than I already have, Cannibal Holocaust is a film about the mortification of the flesh, while The Blair Witch Project is about the mortification of the mind. And while CH Director Ruggero Deodato deserves some credit for being ahead of his time in intertextual horror, there is not a single frame of his film that leaves anything to the imagination. The beauty of The Blair Witch Project is that it travels in the almost-Freudian wilderness of such films as Alien, Eyes of Fire, and The Keep, where nightmares hide around corners and in the dark. And, one last thing, I think it's ridiculous that Donahue, Leonard, and Williams don't get camera credit. They shot the damned film. It seems rather simple.

"No one has ever died here!" - THE KEEP

    by methos

Thanks to the above post, I just had to plug MICHAEL MANN'S awesome adaptation of F. Paul Wilson's creepy novel, "THE KEEP." This is bar none one of the most surreal and dreamlike horror films ever to come out of studio like the mountain. I think it's safe to say it met with little business or critical response in December, 1983. But this is definitely one to go look back at. Scott Glenn, Alberta Watson, a young Gabriel Byrne, Robert Prosky, and Ian McKellen! I love all his work, but Ian will always be Dr. Cuza to me!Plus it has Tangerine Dream's best soundtrack ever. It's still unreleased, but I find myself throwing on that widescreen disc from '93 quite often.

July? I can't wait until July to have my questions answered. I know it'll spoil the surprise to know what happens to the kids at the end, who the witch really is ... but I wanna know! (Childish? Yes. But what can you do?).
Anyway, I've been to the official web site, and there isn't enough information there to satisfy my curiousity. Does anyone know of a site where I can pick up spoiler information for the movie?

    The Blair Witch Project (spoilers)

    by reverend zed

The praise for this movie genuinely surprises me.

I watched this film earlier this afternoon, enthusiastic that the general public of AICN and IMDB have given this flick the definate thumbs up on all counts. "The best horror film of all time" claimed one enthusiastic punter. "Absolutely brilliant" cried another.

As the credits closed on The Blair Witch Project, I was totally dumbfounded. Was I really watching the same film that so many people have labelled a cinematic masterpiece?

At no stage did I ever experience any kind of fear whatsoever. The emotion I did experience was that of intense the desire to have Heather's throat slit through her many sessions of denial, and the feeling of being ripped off during the cheap ending.

The only way conceivable way that people enjoyed this film would be due to thier doubt on whether or not the footage was authentic. The website for this film certainly tries to add to the confusion with thier bogus reports and excerpts.

But at the end of the day, the Blair Witch Project is essentially a cheaply made pseudo-horror film, born from the mind of someone who attended too many camping adventures and shared too may spooky forest stories around an open campfire.

    Don't believe the hype.

    REAL OR FAKE EVIL?

    by noahsark

It doesn't much matter whether the Blair Witch is real or not - I think anyone who's been paying attention knows the answer by now. The important question is whether or not the "Anti-Conformist" (or as I like to call him, "Shitforbrains") is real. People like that are the true evil on our good Earth & I don't think we should simply write them off as harmless nutcases. This kind of intense hatred & egotism are exactly the character traits displayed by people like the Unibomber, the Columbine killers, Charlie Manson, etc. Maybe AC99 is just a prankster, but what if he's not? Is there some way to report that kind of harrassment (private, threatening emails to people who've done nothing but post about a movie?!) to proper authorities? You may think I'm taking this way too seriously, but I've never been one to sit back & ignore something wrong when my gut tells me there's more here than meets the eye. Could the AICN staff who monitor these posts please address this issue? Thanks in advance, Harry! P.S. I LOVE ED SANCHEZ!!!!

    BlairWitch Trailer...

    by arcayne

    I Said it first:
This movie will do to camping and hiking what Jaws did to swimming and beaches. Mark my words.

PS-I'm all for stringing up ANY parent who takes their child to see this movie! I almost did it to some prick who took his 7yo to 8mm...

    It's cool!

    by tigalily

I just saw The Blair Witch Project, and some people weren't scared. Fine. But a whole lot of people were, ESPECIALLY the people I know who are going camping next week, LOL. Really, this movie was creative, well done, and the ending is very eerie. The theater had some comments flying, but for the last five minutes we were silent. It is really a great movie, and VERY unsettling. The reason it has an R rating is obvious. I went with a bunch of 15 and 16 year olds and a teacher (with parental permission) and we saw a lot of teens. I see why thick skinned younger teens would be fine, but I hope not to see any of the little kids I saw in the theater during Scream. It is a horrifying, amazing film. See it, and decide for yourself whether to be scared.

    Not Bad!

    by black squid

After watching the Blair Witch Project I found it to be reasonably good but not as frightening as the hype! I'd have to say that The Exorcist is still by far the most terrifying movie ever made! I've seen too many movies that are simular to BWP by leaving everything to speculation. Having an image such as Regan Mcneil's demonic face burned into your mind is far more powerful than your own creative thought!
