Apple Posts The Trailer For LARS AND THE REAL GIRL!

Published at:  Aug 09, 2007 4:47:21 AM CDT

And Moriarty locks his door and hides from humanity in horror and fear.

You’ll have to pardon me if I am freaked the fuck out by the entire Real Doll concept. I am blown away that a movie about a guy’s relationship with a Real Doll could somehow get a PG-13, but it suggests that they’re going to try to make something about the reasons behind the acts, not the acts themselves. And with Ryan Gosling aboard as “Lars” and a cast that includes Emily Mortimer and Paul Schneider, I’m sure this will be well-acted.

We’ve run some test screening reviews for this a while ago, but now you can watch the trailer and get your first idea of what to expect.

And then, if you really want to be skeeved out, watch the video below, which makes me weep for the future of mankind.

All about this kind of shit. Sooooooooo weird. Words fail to describe the reasons behind the acts, wonder if the film will help explain

    Saw this awhile back...

    by theirongiant

...and was quite worried the "Real Doll" aspect would be a one-trick pony, but the movie finds a way to stay introspective and poignant. It was in rough cut form but the film is excellent, very well-acted, and well worth seeing!

    shocking and fascinating

    by alliejamison

This is the first time (besides having watched that trailer) that I heard anything about that real life doll phenomenon. Holy shit, this is so tragic and yet it seems to be very normal to these guys. I hope that the film is indeed not just funny but has a rather tragicomical tone and takes the Ryan Gosling character serious.

Thanks for embedding that doc. It's terrific. The documentary portrays these "guys and dolls" as if they were one of those things Gondry or Spike Jonze and especially PTA could turn into a great film... whatever...

compelling, both the trailer and doco.

    by half vader

I was a bit surprised at the trailer as on the face of it it's got the quirky (doll) bit, the outsider seeking acceptance for who he is not what he's expected to be, the family and townsfolk who grow beyond themselves and "come to understand", and even the clichéd gawky girl that he finds a connection with and happiness in the end. Is the plot relly that hackneyed? Or is the trailer not actually giving a real sense of the movie and the plot's not so cookie-cutter after all? Or is it another insidious marketing ploy where they have to surround the edgy stuff with super-safe familiar elements to get a middle-of-the-road audience into a 'troublesome' (ambitious or original) movie?

Maybe it's the old thing of using old plots and familiar mechanisms but the performances and craft being the focus. A bit of pathos never hurt either. Anyway I like Gosling and Mortimer and loved 6 Feet Under so I'll check it out.

The doco really does seem to get straight down to the issues of why there's a market for these dolls without having to make the audience comfortable with a familiar plot structure. Thanks for posting that - two different approaches to the same thing, although maybe the movie doll is just a plot device - it certainly does seem like an obvious metaphor. Like I say though, it's all in the telling.

Oh and wasn't the guy who started realdolls an ex-effects guy at Stan Winston Studios or something? Think I read that somewhere. Gives a whole new slant on fucking around on the job!

theyre heavier than youd think. and the rubber changes texture in the appropriate places. theyre also creepy as hell, but only when the owner dresses them and sits them on chairs and gives them a name. rest of the time its just a funny sexdoll.

This looks like the Rush Hour 3 of indie films

    by modlight

I've said it before and I'll say it again. These indie films are just as formulaic as predictable and almost more irritating than the biggest Bruckheimer masterpieces. Just take a quirky character (mustache helps) add a oddball family, some sex talk, a little sweet and sour, thrift shop wardrobing, and sprinkle a little taboo themes on it and you have the indie darling of the year. awwweee.. Total Crap. You're a great actor Gosling, you can do better than "intellectual big concept" flicks.

I think Moriarty was too harsh about the documentary. The Real Doll relationship thing is really sad, but that's it. It's sad. These poor fuckers have nothing. Show a little empathy.

i don't know if i care about this movie - a friend of mine had a MUCH blacker, funnier script running around a while back, so this feels very 'little miss real doll' - but i do agree that the pathology is interesting and the doc - HBO, right? - is fascinating. it surprises me that there are male dolls, tho. us girls always got by with dildos, after all.

I think people are being too harsh with their comments on these people. They're lonely, that's all. And they have trouble making friends and meeting new people. I'm sure that's not a foreign concept to a lot of people in these talkbacks.

    Have a little empathy, folks.

    Lonely is one thing

    by jackthemime

But some of these guys are taking it too far. Look at Gordon for example. He is intentionally removing himself from the world. That's a conscious decision on his part. How did he describe his girlfriend's decision to leave him? "The best thing that ever happened to me"? That's no way to live, man.

    So sad

    by bass bastardson

If only these guys had just a smidgen of self esteem they might not have to spend their lives pretending that an inanimate object could actually love them back. The saddest thing of all is that, because they have found these dolls that they can use as a crutch, real love and companionship will elude them forever. To all you basement dwelling nerds out there who watched that doc and saw a ray of hope - dont fall for the lie. Sex with a rubber doll isn't actually sex.

    Look at it this way

    by half vader

The dolls are cathartic. They've got a release, they're not going crazy (bear with me) and doing weird things/taking it too far to/with the hookers (who have enough problems), or raping or hurting anyone. Which is separate from the "loving them back" issue Bass. Of course I understand what you're saying, though they'd probably feel you were being redundant as they'd already passed the point of no return in that respect and had 'given up' on real women anyway.

They're not blowing their own heads off or anyone else's. That's gotta be good, right?

    hmm

    by superfinn

As long as somebody just uses the doll for sex, i really don't see it being a big deal at all. In my mind there isn't much difference between a doll and a pornoflick, both just being crutches to accomodate fantasies. Same goes for someone having the doll as a "hobby", what with all the pruning, dressing and make-up and stuff. One could for example equate it with a car-enthusiast who spends a lot of time working on machines in his garage.

Where it gets a bit too weird for me is when you cross over from talking about the doll not as an inanimate object but as something that actually responds to you, probably best examplified in the doc by davecat ("we love each other")... dude had honest to god pains when the thing was being shipped off.
