Harry & Yoko on the road to Cleveland, Ohio for A CHRISTMAS STORY with the Rolling Roadshow tonight! & Golden Memories!

Published at:  Aug 05, 2007 1:08:33 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here - taking I-71 north from Louisville, through Cincinatti & Columbus - with my ultimate destination for the day being... Cleveland, Ohio and the beautiful memories of Bob Clark's awesome film... A CHRISTMAS STORY.

It's a bittersweet screening. Bob passed away tragically with his son this year in a terrible car wreck. I used to correspond with Bob's son through the internets - and not being able to have them join us at this screening is a sad mark on an otherwise awesome evening we have in store.

As much as I love A CHRISTMAS STORY - I kinda wish we were doing HOWARD THE DUCK... but that's cuz I'm a quackpot.

The screening tonight will be right in front of the classic CHRISTMAS STORY house - the street is being closed for the event - and the VIP ticket holders will be treated to an awesome after party at the very same Chinese Restaurant that the family ate at in the film!

As for GOLDFINGER - I wish I had video or pictures from the event - but due to National InSecurity - that isn't allowed. Although if you want pictures of EVERY ASPECT of the Gold Depository building - go here Google has approximately 714,000 pictures, so if you want to plan your evil heist - you'll have to make do. I can't help you with my own pics, cuz even though NOTHING HAS CHANGED - pics taken in 2007 pose a dangerous threat that could destroy the security of the United States. THAT said - since our monetary system isn't even based on Gold anymore, I don't see what difference it would make.

Sorry - I was a bit perturbed that I couldn't take photos - so I could show you folks just how awesome the screening was. Literally - we were RIGHT THERE. Right in the midst of it all. My father was an MP at Fort Knox when GOLDFINGER was shot there, though he wasn't shown in the film, though his barracks were... no big deal - I think all the barracks were.

We had to go through security, which was just an ID check. Then Yoko and I got lost on base, almost instantly and we began to worry about Homeland Security swooping in and taking us to Gitmo. But we wound up at a Burger King on base (seriously) and as we waited for a helpful Roadshow person to drive up and help us find the screening location... a Crow swooped down and picked up a full slice of GODFATHER'S pepperoni pizza and flew off with it. Weirdest damn thing ever.

The print Tim showed was immaculate - The crowd was smaller than the other screenings, but then... the mass of troops that you'd expect weren't on base - they have shipped out for duty abroad... When we all realized this - we were saddened, especially at the after party at LEADERS - the officer's club - there were no officers - just a few wives, killing time for their husbands to return.

The families of the military personel that were on base, loved the screening - soldiers' kids on the swingset watching Bond kick ass where they swung. It was great.

Meanwhile - I found Louisville to be an amazingly cool place - nearly Austin cool... ok, not really, but it's a really cool city. The weird Art Cars, the bizarre 21C HOTEL that I was in, the wonderful food of Bristol - that ribeye was amazing... as was the Derby Pie! MMMMM... Then there was WILD & WOOLY VIDEO which I stopped in at - Damn - this is a cool place - not only because they have an awesome STAR WARS pinball machine - that cheats... but because they stock the best quirky weird titles around. And yes, I did buy a copy of Lucio Fulci's PERVERSION STORY aka ONE ON TOP OF THE OTHER! and a copy of the original BEDAZZLED on dvd.

To the friends I made in Louisville - hope I have a reason to return... To the couple that flew to Louisville from Korea for the screening of GOLDFINGER - you rule like few on the earth have ever ruled!

As for you folks in the Cleveland area coming to A CHRISTMAS STORY tonight - or that want to... Here's the info on the screening tonight: A CHRISTMAS STORY!!!

Mainly because the ending was ruined in the remake when he finds a girl who looks exactly like the girl he was pursuing...or in simpler terms, she was played by the same actress. LAME. I prefer the original where they might have had a chance together.

NO WAY Eh Nam1313, Toledo's 999x worse than Cleveland.

    by daddylonghead

Toledo ranks up there at the top with Gary IN, Utica NY and Flint MI, in "cities that are like a horrible northern-urbanized Castlevania level with no ending, except not fun nor a game" Cleveland is more on the Buffalo NY / Detroit MI level... bleak, tragic, violent, yet also weirdly, soulfully compelling, ripe with piquant hints of what could have been in some better reality.

    by swiss trev

....but I don't think Cleveland is a bad place at all. I'm an English dude, born here and live here (in a small Cotswold village much like the one seen in ‘Hot Fuzz’) with my wife and x2 kids but my older sister (a nurse) married a doctor in the states and so I have been to visit them on at least half a dozen occasions as they’ve moved around the US over the last 15 years. I know my knowledge of great US cities is woefully limited (bound to be seeing as I don't live there) but I've been to New York, Boston, Miami, Chicago, Birmingham/Alabama, Cleveland and good old LA. I'd agree Cleveland isn't the prettiest city I've ever visited but it seemed to me to be openly cosmopolitan, embracing most cultures and races without prejudice - I guess it was the most like places I've lived in the UK (Brighton being the most openly receptive to all cultures and ideas/ideals). I’d say the worst city I visited was in Alabama, which was also one of the most beautiful – just seemed to me that not a lot has changed since the bad, bad old days of the slave trade – agreed there are now wages but the jobs haven’t changed a lot and I found neither have some of the prejudices. As I said I’m probably talking shit, would love to be better informed – just going by what I’ve experienced…..so sorry if I’ve offended anyone – hell, every city is great! ;) Oh and the clam chowder I had in Boston was mind blowing, and LA is just a trip! – not sure I could live there but hell it’s a great place to visit!...had my first visit to a titty bar there (The Body Shop on Sunset Blvrd after a sweet trip to ‘Barney’s Beanery’ – home of LA’s second finest chili) was just the best….ahhh, halcyon days.

I guess the cop had seen Ghostbusters as well and just looked at me and shook his head in a sad way before approaching my wife - I'm a twat I know but heh I was an Englishman abroad and was stoked to be there - my wife was recording the sad sordid incident...the cop actually gave my wife his condolences before looking at me one last time and walking away – oops!

Glad you had a good time in the old home town. I hope you were able to partake of the Green Chili Wontons at the Bristol....they are divine. Sounds like you stuck close to Bardstown Road...which is a good place to be a geek. Wild & Wooly is a great place to shop for video...hell...the "Robot" from Lost In Space made a brief visit there three or four years ago when the DVDs first came out. Too bad you didn't make it to "The Great Escape" (think "The Android's Dungeon") or Electric Ladyland (the requisite head shop) or Ear Xtacy...just like South by Southwest, without all the pretension. My main man Randy B. is a manager there...we go all the way back to "Tesla/Def Leppard" in the round concert days. The wife I I won't be moving back for four or five more years (when the soon to arrive baby becomes school age) but now you know why all of us backwards ass types get all misty when they play "My Old Kentucky Home" right before the Derby on NBC. When we do move home, you are invited to the Derby. I shot horses at Churchill Downs for a living for a couple of years...with my TV camera, that is... C'MON BACK NOW, YA HERE!

People playa' hate on something for a reason. If Cleveland was as bad as these people say, then them making fun of it would be akin to making fun of a retarded kid. So, either these people are complete A-holes, or else they are simply playa' haters. Cleveland is the probably the most real city in the States.

I'm from New York city and i've been living in Cleveland for a couple of years. I have season tickets to see Lebron & the Cavs play and I can drive anywhere in the city within 15 minutes, no matter what time of day it is. The museums are awesome, and the cinematheque has some fairly interesting films scheduled. Some of my favorite restaurants are here in Cleveland, most notably The Saffron Patch and Phnom Phen. Best of all, all the entitled jackasses from the coasts who are "working on their screenplay" are nowhere to be found.

I had one King Hell of a time in Cleveland when they opened the R&R Hall of Fame back in 1995. The concert alone is one I'll never forget (at least, the parts I can remember). And they get a bunch of that "Lake Effect" snow...which I envy to no end. Only been there the once, but what a great first impression!!! Plus, Cedar Point...not far away!!! Oh, yeah, and the wife is from there, too...

They used to be great, even if they never played Metallica when they were good. But since the buyout, they mostly play nu-metal, and they play Metallica at least once an hour, I shit you not, which is okay if it's old metallica. But I can't put up with the other crap on there, so I don't bother with it at all.
Can't wait for Spidey 3 on DVD this Oct 30, so I can watch the making-of, which I was on hand for, and I'll be able to jackoff with the great memories, even if the movie was disappointing.

Cicny is indeed very racist & not very attractive. It does have two of my favorite places to chill out, though...Riverbend & King's Island. Also, Proctor & Gamble slaughters thousands of animals a year just so we know that if you consume a pound of TIDE you might get sick. Fuck P&G...I stopped buying their garbage years ago.
