The Next BATMAN Feature Film...
Well folks, I got it confirmed today that Paul Dini will indeed be writing the next BATMAN movie. Not only that, but Bruce Timm and Paul Dini will also be producing!
Is this our dreams come true?
Not quite. While WARNERS is certainly showing signs of coolness (ie MATRIX) they have not yet passed into the ubercoolness realm that we Geeks click our heels and wish for.
The next BATMAN feature will be direct to video, and it will be a huge animated BATMAN BEYOND extravaganza. The target release date will be for late 2000. So folks, for me that's exciting as hell simply because... well I love the animated series, I love the work that Paul Dini and Bruce Timm do, and if the perfect incarnation of Batman is to be in an animated form.... then so be it. I just wish they (Warners) would open their eyes and see that perfection is right in their grasps for the huge payoff.... Sigh...
The plotline is not yet known, but you can be guaranteed that Glen and Coaxial will be on the case for sure!

If this isn't an April Fool's Story, this could be quite cool. I've been a fan of Dini/Timm's Bats since '92 and am really looking forward to the expansion of Batman Beyond. (I'm really looking forward to going to WonderCon next weekend and hearing those two on the program). BTW, any word on the 3rd modern Bats movie floating around out there?
-
I'm first for this one
-
I think Dini/Timm are great together. Their work on Superman & Batman is extraordinary. Plus, Dini has shown he's capable of more than just cartoons when he wrote "SUPERMAN" PEACE ON EARTH" for Alex Ross a while back. It was great! I can't wait for this one, now all we have to worry about is the casting!
-
... I would still rather see another classic Batman film rather than Batman Beyond. As good as that show is I prefer the good old Bruce Wayne kick-ass-bare handed-while-using limited-technology Batman. Or how about a Batman Beyond prequel of sorts showing the origins of the new suit as Wayne aged. Plus no CG like Sub Zero. It just didn't gel with me in that show (though it works great in Futurama).
P.S. I am a little unhappy with the new Beyond suit. All it needs is a really huge long flowing cape to capture that dark feeling of Batman while retaining the more advanced feeling.
And dump the techno music. Why does every futuristic story now-a-days have to have techno music? Rock has been around for fifty years. Classical has been around for hundreds. even hip hop has been around for twenty years now. What, are they all going to just vanish within the next thirty years because everything is getting more computer based? Hell no. -
I'd have to say, Happy April Fool's on this one. The whole post didn't ring true. However if it was true, I'd be mighty surprised.
-
We wish.

I think we just got our wires crossed. Unless I'm mistaken, Harry is talking about the next animated direct-to-video Batman movie, a la Mask of the Phantasm and Subzero. Since we've known for a while that they were going to do another one, this hardly seems impossible. It's just that the way Harry presented it, it kinda sounds like he's talking about a live-action feature film. SO it is a gag, kinda, but the actual story is true.
-
This does sound legit if Harry is indeed talking about the next animated film (which I think he is). As for the April Fools thing, I'd like to personally thank the geeks of AICN for NOT posting any April Fools BS. Call me a grouch, but I've become way tired of this annual fake-news stuff pulled on the geek sites every April 1. Everybody thinks they're a f---in' comedian these days. Well, I just gotta say to these other webmasters: hardly anybody is fooled anymore. And, furthermore, it's neither funny nor convincing anymore. If I want ha-ha "news" that's OUT-RA-GEOUS DUDE!, I'll go to The Onion, thank you.

by martin q blank
april fools joke usually aim to trick you into believing something proposterous, thus embarassing yourself in front of all the people you breathlessly tell. this, well, really, who gives a shit? (sorry to batman fans.) i mean, you'd hardly feel embarassed about believing it, would you? (Now Corona on the other hand, their April fools were twisted enough to be embarassing, but well done so as to seem true.) But then, since B&R any talk of a new Batman film seems a joke.
-
Since Harry's reassured us that this is true...
Fantastic! I've become a BIG fan of BB. To me, it retains a whole lot of the original series' strength of story while doing a lot to make it stand on its own. To me, the animation styles work, the music works, the theme sequence and music REALLY get me excited about the show, and McGinnis's girlfriend...well, whoever's drawing her must be having fun. And we get to have Ace the Bat-hound. ^_^
I want to see a feature-length film showing how Wayne came to the point he was at the beginning of the BB series (on his last mission), what happened to the Bat-Team (sorry), and some hard times/maturation of Terry as a new Batman. If nothing else, I want to know how Wayne's career wound down and ended...all the "keepsakes" from the Rogue's Gallery in the Batcave and all that. -
The next Batman film will not be an animated feature; it will be a REAL FILM, and it's called The Shadow Of Batman. I have written it. In it, Robin is murdered, and Batman seeks vengence, just like The Crow. Warners take note.
-
Smart move there, boy. Writing a script on copyrighted characters. What's the fine for that? $50,000? $100,000? Trust me, I work in the industry, and doing something like that is probably the worst thing you could ever do. And sending it to Warner's would be an even better idea! If more people would write about their own characters instead of bastardising those that already exist; the film industry would be just a tad more original.
-
Hey, there pal, ease up. If Stewart Hill wants to "write a screenplay featuring copyrighted characters" then cool. There's no law against it and no we he could be fined unless he makes a sale and makes money off it. DUH! One of the most common pieces of advice I have read from screenwriters and TV writers is to write spec scripts on whatever interests you in hopes of landing writing assignments. If Stewart Hill shows mastery of the craft AND an understanding of characters he didn't personally create, then that shows 1.) talent and 2.) the ability to handle writing assignments. As far as making a sale and profiting from the script, NOTICE THAT HE ENDED WITH "TAKE NOTE, WARNERS." If he sells it to the copyright owner, who's going to sue him or have him fined? I wish everyone here would stop trying to take the wind out of everyone's sails. You go, Stewart! Post that baby on American Zoetrope and let the real film enthusiasts read it.
-
if in this direct-to-video film we don't have the return of the Joker and the answer to what he's been up to all this time.
-
Hmmmmmmmmmmm, first off, I have to point out to the gentleman writing his own script , that Warners would be unlikely to just kill off a character as well established as Robin.
Not unless they got the good sense to film "Death in the Family"
Now then, naturally, the batman Beyond series has yet to reach our sorry-ass shores here in the U.K. but I've read a bit about it, and I applaud the decision to make another animated feature.
"Mask Of The Phantasm" was excellent, if they'd have managed to hit the character that dead centre in the live action movies, they'd still be making them now, but noooooooooooooooo. They HAD to fuck with it !!!
"Sub Zero" was the film that "Batman & Robin " should have been?could have been if only Joel Shitmaker hadn't felt the need to retread old Fox Adam West territory.
It brought the Freeze saga to a satisfying end.
Has anybody heard any updates on the story that "The Dark Knight Returns" is to be made as an animated feature ?
Is there any hope for another live action movie.......a proper one ?
-
Hey why bother making another sequel when perfection was attained with Batman And Robin?
-
Duuuuuuh, I think you have your dates mixed up there, buddy. Fools day was yesterday !!!
Just out of interest, and giving you the benefit of the doubt that you're not just yanking my chain, how, precisely was B&R perfect ?
Clooney was okay, I suppose, Arnie and Uma sucked, and that was the worst looking Batmobile since, well, that wrought iron-looking sad-ass mess in Forever.
Script, hell, I thought the whole damn thing was ad-libbed. It made those 60s scripts by Lorenzo Semple seem semi intellegent.
(Semple, there's a man who ought to be dragged screaming at high speeds through the streets of Hollywood for crimes agains comicbook heroes>) Sets, what happened to the batcave ? All I saw was the bat-tunnel !!!
Perfection, my ass !!!!!
-
As for the next, NEXT feature (for theater release) I think it's pretty obvious that Andy and Larry Wachowski should direct AND write, wit minimal input from WB.
-
Batman and Robin the BEST movie? No way, Jose! Stupid film, bad directing, overpaid actors! In general it sucked! Go chase some X-Files and go have sex with Scully for Pete's sake! Better yet, give me her number and I'll take care of her for you! You woudn't know what to do with a girl anyway, SEGA BOY!
-
Joel Schumacher is still first choice to helm Batman Five, while Richard Donner badly wants to take it over. He naturally wants Mel Gibson as Batman/Bruce Wayne, with Rene Russo as his love interest. Filming WILL be located in Australia - like Episode Two - Mission Impossible 2 and also Die Hard 4. - Sure this'll turn the Dark Knight into a Lethal Bat Weapon of a movie, but it would also bring the franchise back. - My suggestions were to bring back old Keaton... But what do I know?
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm? -
Sorry about the above, stupid finger has a mind of its own !
Keaton would be my automatic first choice to play Bruce/Bats again !
He's easily the best we've seen so far. Val Kilmer's Bruce Wayne seemed to be the same age as Dick Grayson, which made the mentor relationship all wrong, and Clooney seemed to have wandered on to the wrong set for much of B&R.
Gibson ? Personally, I don't think so !!!!
Kurt Russell ? Gimme a Hell Yeah !
And let's have a decent script, with the right amount of reverence for the source material this time. No stupid kid-jokes, make it a 15 cert. Go for the people the comics are aimed at !!!!
For crying out loud, Warners, this is one of your biggest, best franchises, don't let the sinister Men In Suits do what the Joker, Riddler, Penguin, Scarecrow, Ras Al Ghul, Bane, Catwoman et al have failed to do and clobber the Dark Knight into submission.
Hey, cool thought, let Tarantino direct it !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Robin out.
-
yeah me too...I'll have a booth at Wondercon (whoopie :OP) saturday and sunday...Lets first say i **LOVED** "Mask of the Phantasm". I didnt hate Subzero as much as I wanted to. Subzero had one major problem that I have yet to get past (and I plan on asking Paul Dini this at Wondercon) Mr. Freezes hideout is an **abandoned** oil refinery off the coast of Gotham(?)..they WHY is it NOT emptied?? ITS FULL OF OIL!!!!!! Little things that insult my intellegence LIKE THAT!(actually thats a pretty major thing) I love Batman Beyond too, nothing really glaring popped out and said "thats wrong!" :O) McK!!
-
I think (I HOPE) bill Mulder was trying to be humorous when he said B-n-R was damn near perfection. BILL, A COMMENT LIKE THAT IN THESE POSTS COULD GET YOU LYNCHED OR WORSE!!!! Hell even I'm not crazy enough to make a comment like THAT (anywhere!!) hehe....NO NO LEPRECHAUN 3 and 4 should have won BEST PICTURE DAMMIT!!! HAHA!!! goofy McK! :O)
-
Calm down I was just kidding around about Batman And Robin being good. Hell, in all honesty I don't even think that Batman Returns (even with the skilled hands of Tim Burton) was that good let alone garbage dumps like Batman Forever and Batman And Robin.
-
but I still want Scully's number...hubba,hubba!
-
SHAKES THE CLOWN! That movie is a classic! Vastly underated. Can't hold a candle next to Saving Private Ryan(lousy film). Yes, Shakes the Clown; a true gem of a film.
-
Mulder, you were joking ?
Well, okay..........I forgive !
Uncapie, this manic fixation with Scully.........doesn't that facial spot of hers by her nose........distract you just a little bit, kinda put you off ? -
Okay first off, George Clooney was the best Batman. He was just unlucky in the fact that he got THE worst batman movie, and THE worst co-stars to work with. Obviously the severe crapness of the movie overshadowed the fact that he was actually GOOD!
Secondly, I agree that Mel Gibson isn't right for the part. don't get me wrong, I love Mel, in fact he's my favourite actor. I just highly doubt he would do it anyway. He's not likely to lower himself to the level of being the 4th BATMAN is he?? Mel usually makes excellent choices in the movies he makes. PAYBACK, ahhhhh fantastic. Oh yeah, and if anyone knows the original ending to Payback, drop me a line and let me know please. Im interested.
Kurt Russell's an ok actor but I can't really see Batman in him. Ohhhhhh jeeeeeeeezzzz, I just don't know who should be batman. I just think they should drop the whole batman thing now anyway. It's overdone! -

There was speculation thatDark Knight Returns was being animated because in a WB promo there was a quick glimps of what appeared to be Bats fighting the Mutant Leader in full Miller style. A few weeks ago this episode was on, but it was about some kds telling stories of what they thought Batman was like. The first one was funny, because it was done in the full campy 60's comic style. the next one was the DKR part. It was about ten minutes or so and was very awesome indeed. It had Bats attacking the Mutants in his Batmobile tank and then fighting the Leader, complete with neck snapping sound and "I'm the surgeon" line. I would love to see this fully animated.

There's been a running discussion on this at the WB site since the first, and it's been mentioned in the coaxial talk back section; The rumor is that the new Batman Beyond movie comes at the expense of the planned third Batman animated film. A poster, "Mr. Mayhem," quoted a response from Boyd Kirkland he had recieved concerning this.
"Dear Mr. Mayhem:
Yes, I'm sorry to confirm that what you have heard is true. Randy Rogel and I had finished the script to the next animated Batman movie, I had artists working on the preproduction designs, and we were just a week away from recording the actors, when the plug was pulled on the project. The reason given for
the decision was that since Batman Beyond has been such a huge ratings success on the WB, Warners and its consumer products partners would rather put all of the emphasis on that show now.I have heard of no intention to make more of the regular Batman TV episodes at
this time. I agree with you, that I think a large audience still exists out there for the old Batman, but apparently Warner management needs convincing of that. My word carries very little weight, it seems, in
this regard. Perhaps if thousands of fans started a letter writing campaign demanding more Batman, they could make it happen. If you would like to spread the word, please advise fans to direct their letters to Tom Lesinski at Warner Home Video, 3903 W. Olive Ave., Burbank CA 91522 and Jean MacCurdy, Warner Bros. TV Animation, 15303 Ventura Blvd., Suite 1200, Sherman Oaks, CA 91403.
Good luck.
Sincerely,
Boyd Kirkland"
This was posted on the first of April, so take it as you like. The poster has not come forward to say April Fools, so I take it the post was sincere. Rumor has it that WB has ordered 52 episodes of BB, but none of Batman. Can anyone confirm this?
