John August's THE NINES gets a trailer!!!

Published at:  Aug 03, 2007 3:00:14 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I quite liked this flick at Sundance. It's not for everybody, that's for sure, but I thought it was smartly written and had a nice mind-fuck feeling.

The trailer is below. You get a taste as to the weirdness of the flick. Enjoy!

    The Sims

    by jackalcack

If this film is 'The Truman Show' but about about a guy trapped in a 'Sims' style game then that trailer just fucking ruined it by showing those coloured shapes hovering above the characters' heads. If not, it looks cool.

maybe its just me, but the direction looked pretty crappy. even if the trailer was glorious, I probably wouldn't go see the movie. John August is the worst thing that ever happened to Tim Burton.

    SAW IT TODAY

    by the real mirajeff

Stay tuned for a full review, but it was NOT good. It's a really ambitious film with a lot on its mind, built around an intriguing concept, but it does not execute well and is basically a giant clusterfuck. All the critics leaving the screening today were scratching their heads as they left the theater, not knowing what to make of it. It's a real headtrip, mindfuck kind of movie, only the highly anticipated ending doesn't deliver at all. The press notes describe the film as a riddle that's answer is the question, 'how does it all add up?' Does that sound like a movie with a satisfying resolution? It proposes all these cool ideas and then does nothing with them. They lead nowhere. The performances were excellent though, I must say. You'll see a whole new side of Ryan Reynolds. I guess it's worth a look-see for the Curious Georges out there. It's competently made but incomprehensible, as if August was just operating on a whole 'nother level. I also thought it was a little self-indulgent and Hollywood-insidery for a surreal, metaphysical indie comedy. The Nines is going to divide audiences. Like Quint says, it's not for everyone. It certainly wasn't for me. I can't make heads or tails of it.

I totally agree about John August being the biggest problem with Tim Burton's career - August is a hack. However much rewriting and tinkering went on, there's no way that brilliant scripts were the starting point for the tepid moribund blandness that ended up on the screen in Wonka etc., but

    August may be a hack...

    by the mothman

...but he runs a semi-helpful website. He makes it seem like if you work hard enough you can arrive at a decent screenplay, while at the same time dropping enough names to hint that it's probably never going to happen for you. Also, there has to be a synonym for 'mindfuck'.

has an annoyingly high-pitched voice. anyone else get this? also, unnecessary to take the shirt off in every scene a la Will Smith. Good in Smokin Aces, horrible in the fat suit movie. I don't really get this guy, or why he dated Alanis...

From your review, it sounds like Donnie Darko, which is a pathetic little film that makes no sense (and the director admits this in the DVD commentary). If so, there are many people who will love this film because they think they are special and figured it out...fools.

The ending is ludicrous and has absolutely zero thematic significance. You leave the theater thinking, "Ok, that was bizarre. What do I care? How does that relate at all to me or my experiences?"

Just because I'm Internet-retarded doesn't mean I don't have feelings. (sniffle) So it didn't just sit there doing nothing, asking you to right-click to save? Dude, Donnie Darko is fucking brilliant and one of my My interpretation is that it's the single greatest superhero movie ever made. Donnie is a schizophrenic superhero who is his own nemesis in the manifestation of Frank. BUT I'll tell you what. The whole time I was watching the Nines I thought it felt like a Richard Kelly film. And I've only seen one Richard Kelly film. But I have read the Southland Tales script and I thought the Nines shared several similar elements. Even the Nines' score sounded like the music on the Southland Tales website. I like the Kelly comparison, but Donnie Darko made total sense to me. I think it's fucking genius. Oh, and I happen to like Ryan Reynolds. I think almost he's hilarious in almost everything he does, including Waiting... and Just Friends.

...to comment about how fresh this trailer looked. I mean, I really, really, REALLY like movies that ohhhh, you know, aren't a remake, or the third, or fourth, or twenty-sixth in a series, or even a remake of a remake. Then I read The Real MiraJeff's 1st comment & thought DAMB!!! Then I read his second comment about it being comparable to a Richard Kelly flick & all was well in the world (mine) again.

    John August CAN write.

    by kilroy

Don't forget that John August has written some pretty cool movies. "Go" and "Big Fish" are really great scripts. If he's taking a big risk on his first directing gig on a feature film (instead of say, directing a sequel to some franchise film) then I think that's pretty gutsy and rare. He could have taken an easy route but it looks like he wanted to make something specific and personal.
