AVATAR hires some actors and a cinematographer!!!

Published at:  Aug 03, 2007 12:32:08 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. It seems that this film has been happening forever, hasn't it? They already have some great people attached, including Sigourney Weaver, CCH Pounder and Sam Worthington. Now they've added Stephen Lang and Michelle Rodriguez. Rodriguez is no Vasquez, but I guess she's close enough.

She'll play an ex-Marine pilot and Lang will be a crusty Marine colonel who travels to Pandora to lead its troops. Apparently, Lang met for a role way back on ALIENS, but didn't get the part.

They've also hired Mauro Fiore as the cinematographer. Mauro shot TRAINING DAY, GET CARTER (remake), SMOKIN' ACES and THE ISLAND. Those movies were beautifully shot, in completely different ways, so this can only be a good thing.

The flick will have 31 days of live action shooting in Wellington starting in October. That will be combined with computer animation for the finished flick, hitting May '09. Crazy this is finally happening, eh?

Michelle Rodriguez is a fuckin' bad-ass. Think about what Cameron has done with bad-ass chicks. Sigourney Weaver peaked as a bad-ass during that final showdown in Aliens (although I wouldn't want to run into her in a dark alley when she had her head shaved for part 3). Then think about how Sarah Connor, as played by Linda Hamilton, particularly in T2, is basically the last woman on Earth you'd ever want to fuck with. I think Linda Hamilton in T2 would give The Bride a run for her money. She's like a female Jack Bauer. Cameron is going to milk Rodriguez for every ounce of bad-ass she has left in her after Girlfight, Fast and Furious and Lost. This will be great for her career and great for Avatar. Way to go, Jimmy Boy!

    When Cameron made movies.... often.

    by readingwriter

When was that? (T2 and Aliens were separated by less than 2 years, but other than that, I don't recall him making movies often. Well, maybe for HIM often...) The thing about this "badass" thing is that he's done that already. The great directors don't just keep plugging the exact same type of character into their movies, forcing them in, really, whether the piece demands it or not. And really, is the badass chick so rare these days that seeing another one is going to have us going 'Holy SHIT this Cameron guy is doing something new and original here!"? I fear Cameron is going to fall into the I'm Making An Important Movie trap since Titanic--he doesn't want to entertain, he wants to educate, and he's at his best when he's entertaining. Everything I've heard about this movie so far makes me interested, but the idea that a "badass chick" doesn't. In fact,The Real MiraJeff is actually way off on this--Cameron's "badass chicks" are nothing of the sort. (Huh? Hang on.) Sarah Connor in T1 is a normal person who by the end carries a gun and is vigilant--she's a real person pushed to the edge and is standing her ground. She'd chuckle at the "badass" one-liner crap. In Aliens, Ripley was the next step up, but still not "badass" in terms of the perfectly buff, sneering, one-liner put-down spouting Badass type--she's a mother figure (the feminists howl...) who is protecting her young. (Just because a woman is tough and capable doesn't make her badass.) Connor is, in fact, the weak link in T2 because Cameron's idea of making her Terminator-like in her battle against the rise of the Terminators makes her boring the more "badass" she gets. Yeah, it's cool to see her buff and firing pointlessly even after she sees her weapons are doing NOTHING against the T-1000, but it gets very tiring by the end, and hers is the least-interesting character of the four. Mastrantonio is not BA in Abyss. Jamie Lee Curtis is so unattractive in True Lies and she freaks out around weapons. And Winslet isn't BA. So, while I enjoy Cameron's writing women who aren't pushovers, I don't think he does BA all that well, seeing how the one truly BA woman in the bunch is the rather boring Connor of T2.

T2 and Aliens were separated by less than 2 years? Seems like Aliens was 1986 and T2 was 1991, and there was a little movie called The Abyss in between. And I dont think he is forcing strong females into his scripts - he just happens to write action roles for females more often than most other directors, and its nice that someone does, because I dont want to see another Sandra Bullock in Speed or any of the Charlie's Angels. Dont forget, Weaver got an Oscar nomination for Aliens. How many other action heroines have gotten that?

    by jeffrex007

UGH cant stand her. At the risk of sounding unnecessarily morbid, I wish she was caught in a fiery car crash in Hawaii when she was DUI instead of getting arrested. This is not, as MiraJeff put it, "cool." She and Julliette Lewis could be in a movie, and they could call it "One Trick-Ponies," Lewis only plays crazy chicks, Rodriguez only plays tough broads with bad dialogue, and it doesnt help that she delivers the bad dialogue terribly. And she's not that great looking. I'll belive she's tough, but I also believe she's tough because she knows shes a fucking dunce and she's insecure about being stupid so she forms a tough girl persona. Sad really.

The Avatars (from what I understand) are a sort of "shell" that the humans occupy to fight the aliens in the war for Pandora. Thus, the Avatars look just like the aliens (the Na'vi). I worked on this film for a few weeks over the summer, so I know it's been shooting for quite a while, but mostly the motion-capture, CG stuff...big gray room, gray sticks, gray rocks and Cameron with a camera... The big stuff's being shot in NZ. It took a few goes with people explaining it to me before I got the gist of the story...AVATAR ultimately makes sense as a name, but I think most people will mix it up with the cartoon...which I also love. Too bad he's not making that instead.

Cameron would do a better Avatar (cartoon) than M. Night. Your description of his Avatar is very much Gundam/Evangelion/Macross/every mecha anime ever made. In response to the Real MiraJeff I would say, that Michelle Rodriguez can play an awkward tom-boyish thug well- which is what she played in Girl Fight and in everything she's been in since. She was good-- for a non-actor, in an indie no-budget film. She's not a Hollywood star in my opinion. She's also seems bat-shit crazy and dangerous in real life. She makes the "Private Pyle" face a lot.

    No confusion

    by cobbio

Cameron's "Avatar" is pretty fucking far away from "...Gundam/Evangelion/Macross." It's not remotely anime-inspired, thank God, it's pulled from an original Cameron screenplay I've read described as "Lawrence of Arabia on a futuristic planet."
Anime is cool, but "Avatar: The Last Airbender" is child's play compared to Cameron's upcoming release. "The Last Airbender" is PG-rated kid's fare at best, whereas Cameron's "Avatar" will be a big, violent, dramatic orginal movie. As only Cameron can deliver.
    Let's not confuse the two.

I wouldn't really call it a "giant robot suit". Think of it as human consciousness inhabiting living beings...They can't fight the Na'vi as humans cause they're like, ten feet tall and would kick the humans asses. So this is their way of leveling the playing field. But the bodies they inhabit are living, breathing beings...at least that's what I understood them to be.

Yeah, she was good in Girlfight, but that's it. She had a chance to "act" on Lost, where she sucked big time.

AVATAR is gonna have a tomboy match chewing alien ie: Michelle Rodriguez.

Seriously though, I trust Cameron 110%. Everytime he makes a film he changes cinema.

To call the people who thinks MR stinks as an actress "Michelle Rodriguez haters" totally begs the question. Personally, I prefer to think of myself as a "bad actress hater". And as you yourself point out, even after being in a dozen films and the greatest tv show ever (LOST) MR has but one, and only one performance that doesn't suck. Get it? Girlfight is EXCEPTIONAL... it's the EXCEPTION. But if one looks over her entire body of work, there is no possible conclusion other than she's an awful actress who had one good turn.

    But MiraJeff...

The problem with her is that she keeps playing the same role over and over. She never tries to do anything different. Isn't acting supposed to be about becoming a different person?
