FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
GEORGE TAKEI BACK AS SULU
IN AUGUST 23 STAR TREK PREMIERE
Oscar and Emmy winners – along with the fans – team to complete Sulu STAR TREK episode begun 30 years ago
GEORGE TAKEI may be playing a hero on HEROES and serving as Howard Stern's recurring sidekick on subscription radio, but it's as the dashing Mr. Sulu, helmsman on the starship Enterprise, that he will be forever loved by the fans.
But he hardly imagined his greatest Sulu episode would come in 2007! Takei is starring in "World Enough and Time," a new STAR TREK episode produced by an amazing mix of Industry pros and fans that will be premiering at the Fine Arts Theater in Beverly Hills on August 23, 2007, with both the premiere and episode streaming real-time worldwide on the Internet – literally a world premiere.
Plus one lucky fan will win airfare to the premiere and exclusive dinner with Takei, the writers and director of the episode. (To register to stream the episode and/or enter the contest, log onto www.startreknewvoyages.com)
It all began when STAR TREK – NEXT GENERATION writer MARC SCOTT ZICREE learned of STAR TREK NEW VOYAGES, a high-quality series of fan episodes that were getting millions of viewers and beating the networks at their own game.
"I recalled a terrific Sulu story my friend MICHAEL REAVES came up with for STAR TREK PHASE II, a series Paramount was going to do in the mid-70s," Zicree recalls. "After a year of building sets and buying stories, the studio made the movies instead, so the script was never written. Ironically, Michael's story had Sulu aging 30 years and raising a family on an alien planet, so it seemed perfect timing to do it now."
Zicree suggested to Reaves, an Emmy-winner and also a STAR TREK – NEXT GENERATION writer, that the two of them write the script together. He then contacted JAMES CAWLEY, producer and star of NEW VOYAGES, who eagerly agreed to their proposal.
Finally, Zicree met with Takei and pitched him the episode (the two had been friendly acquaintances since Zicree had interviewed Takei for his landmark book THE TWILIGHT ZONE COMPANION). "I told him, 'You're a brilliant actor who never got the Sulu episode you deserved, and this is it." Zicree laughs. "He read the synopsis then and there and said, 'I'm in.'"
Utilizing the existing cast and crew of NEW VOYAGES, Zicree set about augmenting it with Industry pros from his own career on network shows, including top STAR WARS artist IAIN McCAIG (designer of Darth Maul and Queen Amidala) and Oscar and Emmy-winning makeup, effects and storyboard wizards from such TV shows and films as BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, LOST, HEROES and SPIDERMAN 3.
Guest roles included two more STAR TREK legends – GRACE LEE WHITNEY, reprising her role as Rand, and MAJEL BARRETT RODDENBERRY, Gene Roddenberry's widow, contributing her talents as the Enterprise's computer voice. Rounding out the cast was Broadway actress CHRISTINA MOSES, as Sulu's daughter Alana.
Shot in high definition with over 700 effects shots, "World Enough and Time" boasts a level of production far beyond a network show. More than that, Zicree is proud that the story works on an emotional level.
"People who see it are in tears by the end," he notes, adding that ardent fans of the episode include such noted writers as MARV WOLFMAN, creator of BLADE, and science fiction icon RAY BRADBURY.
With the world premiere finally in sight, Zicree can breathe a sigh of relief at having finished his first directorial effort (after over 100 script sales as a writer-producer). Mentors who advised him included such esteemed directors as GUILLERMO DEL TORO (PAN'S LABYRINTH), MICHAEL NANKIN (BATTLESTAR GALACTICA) and ROXANN DAWSON (HEROES). "But the best advice I got was from J.J. Abrams, who said, 'Pretend you know what you're doing!'"

see... no chance
-
Sounds interesting. Maybe.
-
What the #%$? I didn't type that in the subject line. Ain't that a glitch.
-
Hope it's better produced than that Tuvok Shattered Universe crap.
-
I get a strong smell from my wang.
-
but I will probably have forgotten all about it by August, and thats Wednesday. Sulu rocks.
-
Is it the same actress?
-
...about stupid fan fiction "webisodes". Can you move these kind of announcements out of the legit TV area...maybe to a bottom right corner thing none of us have to see if we don't really Really REALLY want to?
-
I am shocked that after nearly 30 min. nobody has said that yet. Where are all the gayters (gay haters)? Either way, I still laugh everytime I think about the Bill Shatner roast when George got up there. Funny guy.
-
and she was played by Jacqueline Kim. Perhaps Sulu had another daughter?
-
Hey, let's give everyone their own episode. Maybe all the dead red shirts can come back as zombies.
-
oh my!
-
The effects are actually damn good, the lighting's been a bit off, and getting used to different actors as the primary rolls has been iffy but overall it was worth watching and they've even had DC Fontanna write for them, DC being one of the writers for the original series and more.. Its a very impressive project for fans.
Paramount has actually decreed that so long as they make no money off of the project they won't object it. -
Anyone who blasts this effort made for nothing by all involved, purely for the love of Star Trek clearly has not one living brain cell. Hate all you want cretins, but these fine people have actually done something with their lives.
-
I've always wondered if Christian Slater made a habit of visiting Sulu's quaters late at night, as he did in 'Undiscovered Country'. Maybe they were taking some 'New Voyages' of their own. LOL
-
ARKANSAS: I'll make you pathetic, you piece of...
TAKEI: I'll show you, I'm gonna get that wang
ARKANSAS: I bet you do!
TAKEI: Oh my God
ARKANSAS: Now what?!!
TAKEI: Now don't all worked up over it!
ARKANSAS: ABOUT WHAT??!!
TAKEI: My wang!
If we're gonna sum up the Howard Stern Sirius show so far, it's gonna be about George Takei and his famous "I'll show you, I'm gonna get that wang!" This never gets less hilarious, no matter when it's played. -
"Everybody WANG! DONG! tonight....everybody WANG! DONG! tonight....everybody WANG! DONG! tonight...."
-
Balloon knot. Oh, my!
-
Sulu will have a samurai sword to fight off sylar spock and fat old shatner who wants to be in it but is already dead in their universe...killed by Linderman, strangley enough...
-
Does Space-Meth, gets Space-Rammed, uses magical medical machine to cure self of various Space-STDs. The End.
-
This better not be some "streaming video only" thing. Think of the MILLIONS that would be made with one-shot Trek DVD movies. Millions, I tell you!
-
He plays Kirk in these, doesn't he? There's only one Shat. Why try and pretend to be The Shat? There can be only one Shat.
-
Or Dauth Maul, or Dooku, or a similar project with some other "minor" starwars character with less then 15 minutes of screen time and 8 lines of dialogue in the total trilogy. I mean, its Sulu for crying out loud. It's not like they got that Irish guy who was in like 2 episodes and who got his milk poisoned by the Shakespeare chick with the crazy eyes.
-
This sounds way cooler than Mr. Takei made it sound on the Stern show! I went from indifferent to crazy-excited after this post.
-
Author of the best damm SciFi novels ever, "Hyperion" and "Fall of Hyperion".

Damn that was just plain funny. haven't laughed that hard in days. I watched the first "episode" of this shit fest for about 5 minutes giggled and never went back. Sulu or not this show is SHIT. ----Now as far as a real Trek dvd movie as someone else stated....Id be in on that.
-
id watch every single goddamn episode of that.
-
That should be right up there with tomboy beanpole and having a beer and cheets on his wife as far as AICN catchphrases go, if I had my druthers...
-
hope the special effects are good. then again, if it's original Trek, nobody will notice. ba-da-BING!
-
Yes, they've become nerds of the ultimate degree -- which isn't necessarily a good thing.I don't know, this is just one of those things that I don't get. I mean, it's not like they're investing all this time and effort for some sort of financial reward (in fact, they're forbidden to). So the idea that a bunch of adults -- not kids, mind you, which I could understand, but fully grown adults -- actually feel the need to spend their money and their time creating full-blown TREK sets with functioning lights and do-dads in their garage, as well as forking out even more cash to plug in good looking SFX work, all so they can play act as if THEY are The Shat or Spock just seems "off" to me. I mean, the whole adult dress-up and play-act thing is simply one thing I just don't get.Hey, if it's Halloween and you're going to a party, fine, knock your socks off. If it's the weekend and my girlfriend wants to dress up in a slutty vinyl Batgirl costume complete with thigh high boots, hey, all the better since it'll knock my socks off. But in the end, when I look at these guys pretending to be the Trek characters and actually thinking they're continuing on the saga, as if anyone with an IQ over 14 would actually be buying into that, it just reminds me of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog in that clip where he's at the premiere for ATTACK OF THE CLONES and is mocking all the grown adults -- again, accent on grown adults -- who are dressed up as characters, too, and looking rather dorky."Oh man! Look at this one! He's like some sort of super nerd. It's like he was built from the parts of lesser nerds. He's some sort of UBER nerd now!"
-
it can't be that bad. It's the ultimate form of fan fiction, and hey it seems to be receiving a bit of press coverage. Furthermore, I bet you would be VERY surprised to find out how many people actually watch their episodes. And I dunno, but maybe it will lead them all to jobs in the actual film and television industry. These people are creatively talented, energetic, and motivated. I say power to them, hell if I lived near them, I'd probably try to help out. It's hella fun to make movies.
-
I think the point is, they're producing something impressive that is entertaining thousands of people. Financial reward is not the only kind of measure of worthiness of an activity. The best of professionals in the entertainment biz (as in the ones not in it for the money, or not solely) do what they do for the same reasons.
-
I've seen these shows too. Although they are funny in a way, let's make a couple of things clear:
1. The effects are not "great." They are at about the same level as a game I have called Army Men RTS. Everything looks plastic and has no sense of scale or mass. Inertia is non-existent. Plus, they've just made some horrible effects choices that only make things worse...like the Enterprise doing barrel rolls.
2. These people have not "done something with their lives." They have so NOT done something with their lives that it is hilarious to think about, in a pathetically funny sort of way. -
Coincidence or conspiracy?
-
The Adventures of Captain Sulu would have made a nice series of Trek. This sounds wonderful – I’ll mark the calendar. Thanks.
-
I thought he was a villain. I dont watch Heroes enough. I dont really care for the show that much.
-
I wonder if they consider themselves in continuity?
-
I wonder if he will put an extra spring in Sulu's step?
-
...I wish they didn't, but they really do. I'm sure they're all having a geeky fun good time, but like the vast majority of student films and fan produced hokum, the end result seems hardly worth the time to anyone on the outside looking in.
-
Just a counterpoint to the previous post; I've seen a few of these, and I'm impressed. Of course, they aren't as polished as the Original Series, but they are a nice tribute: a TRIBUTE, from fans, FOR fans. If you can't appreciate it, don't watch it. I applaud Cawley and his crew for what they've done for the fans and admirers of the Original Series, and I wish them all the best. As a previous poster stated, if I lived closer, it would be a lot of fun to work on a project like this, instead of sitting on my ass bitching about how "geeky" & "hokey" it looks.
-
...but you're actually playing right into Shatner's own insult:
"They laugh at other's failures, when they have not done SHIT"It's obvious that the Trolls have forgotton that despite how many of TOS episode titles came from Shakespeare quotes, it wasn't Shakespeare. -
I had to say it, even if I have no reason to.
-
... Gilligan: This Island Still Sucks. Except my version will be a serious drama, Gilligan will be a doctor who's compelled to always help people, Skipper will be a rogueish con man and thief, Ginger will be a heroin-addicted rock singer, Mary Jane a fugitive from justice, and the Professor will lead a mysterious group of other islanders who are in conflict wit.... Ummm.... Never mind!
-
I have seen a consistent step forward in quality on all fronts. Acting, Direction, Story, Set Design, Lighting. etc. Each episode brings them closer to being indistinguishable from any production produced by a major studio. And it is sounding like this episode will be the one that really brings them to that point. Having said all this, even their very first episode (Come what May), for any flaws that you can find (IE: Crawley's Elvis hair...something that was unavoidable given his work schedule at the time of production), it was still way more impressive than any ST fan film production that had been produced so far. And because of the advancements in computer generated effects they where able to create effects that where light years ahead of the original series, giving fans a "What if" look at what the TOS would have been like with better effects long before CBS Paramount rolled out "Trek Remastered". Without even considering the improvements in later episodes, it was already an impressive effort……Oh, and mr_sinister7381, to quote Lobo…..”Bite me Fanboy”.
-
I’ll admit that at first it was disconcerting (to say the least) seeing someone else playing these iconic roles. In their pilot episode the acting varied, some of it good some of it weak. I thought that the guy doing Spock was doing a particularly good job, especially given the enormity of the task (large shoes to fill and all). But with each episode the acting has gotten better. I think everyone made great strides with the last one “To Serve All My Days”. In time I got used to seeing someone else playing these characters. And I also remember reading something that James Crawley wrote where he said; We have had more than one James Bond, more than one Superman, and more than one Batman, so why can’t their be more than one Kirk or Spock? Something we may as well all get used to with the new movie coming.
-
I can't believe this is happening - it sounds awesome. Sulu totally deserves his own eppy, and I second the dude who said we should have seen him in an Excelsior adventure. But this will rock. GO SULU!!!!! And Thanks to Herc for posting this.
-
For those asking “Why do this when there is no financial reward”? Well if you go to the New Voyages website the answer is obvious. Paramount already licenses fan fiction, the producers of New Voyages hope that licensing fan films will be the next step. And it may happen. I have to wonder if the reason that this latest episode will not be available for download (like the previous episodes where), is because Paramount will make it an official direct to DVD release at a later time.
-
Didn't know that. Interesting, since the whole premise of the project was creating webisodes that were freely available to all.But I agree, it seems as if they're getting better with each episode. Although I wish they had waited and done the Doomsday war episode in two parts as originally conceived. It seemed a tad rushed in the one hour format.
-
Okay sure they're not making money, but Paramount might decide to finally start direct to DVD production in the future, and these guys will easily get the job. Also, and this is probably the most practical DEMO REELS! Anyone involved in video production has one and these will look quite impressive to perspective employers, especially if they do it on their own time and money. I remember seeing Gabriel Köerner on the documentary Trekkies when he was working on his fan film. A friend of mine started bashing him by saying "Come on, there's no way ANYONE would show his little film" my response was "but it would sure look great on a demo reel". Sure enough that's EXACTLY what he did. Now he's working on Battlestar Galactica and was nominated for an Emmy. Believe me I've seen tons of demo reels when we're looking to hire people, but it's the ones that show this type of dedication that stand out.
-
Decades of respect wiped out by George's delivery of those two words.
-
hee hee hee... That makes me giggle.
-
Many of the posts in this thread betray a lack of investigative ability. Posting nonsense without knowing anything about the subject other than your own presuppositions just makes you look stupid.
That said...
New Voyages is not the best thing ever. Not even the best fan film ever. But there is much worse out there. The level of production detail that's going into it is pretty incredible, actually. The Bridge set is a meticulous, precise re-creation based on the Paramount blueprints.
Inexperience has marked much of their earlier efforts, in terms of acting, story construction, writing, and cinematography. But each episode DOES take a big step forward in improving all those things. New Voyages has not arrived, but it seems to be carrying on a dream in such a way that its attracting more quality personnel and Star Trek production alum with each new episode.
Go to the website and check out their news announcements and such to see who is coming on board.
Bashing it is stupid, especially coming from people who live to bash internerds on a fucking messageboard all day. Saying NV is the best thing ever or that it is full on high quality is... uneducated.
But saying that its fun if taken for what it is, saying that it is an achievement for its particular subgenre of medium, and saying that it is good and getting better under those terms is entirely appropriate. -
Will this wind up looking like a Saturday Night Live skit? Can't the guy just write a novel and leave it at that?
-
I mean suck. But the show might be interesting.
-
Starship Exeter is much better, without the hammy guest stars and bad impersonations of the classic crew. The Tressurian Intersection has much better effects as well. Check out the first couple of acts. If they ever finish the damn thing it will really be a winner.
-
??????????????
-
fancied up with some new animation. Jesus that stiff Filmation animation just kills me
-
I saw a couple of these. They were interesting and I was amazed at what they could do on such a small budget. The stories and acting could use a little work, but then you could say that about the original show. There seem to be a lot of people here going on about how uncool it was of them to do this. First off, you're posting on AICN, so STFU. Second, you'll grow up in a few years and realize that only losers obsess on what it is to be cool. The rest of us don't care much what other people think. It's called emotional security. It's like when closeted gay guys go on an on about some chic's "knockers." You ain't foolin' no one with that act.
-
Count me in!
-
i love it... TOS is the future of Trek because imo all the series have sucked ass except TOS. sure, the Kirk and Spock actors are awful, i can handle that they dont look like the originals but they just deliver poor performances. the last episode with Chekhov sucked pretty bad i will be the first admit. and get this... the story has Chekhov age 30 years, umm. i hope they produce a better episode for Sulu. i really hope they get smart about their effects and reuse more shots or try something artsy that does not require animators taking so long, i cant help but think this is what is hurting their schedule. the production schedule is so slow, at this rate they will finish a 22 episode season 4 in 22 years. its a fan series, i think most people would rather see more episodes than polished space effects that still do not compare to studio quality.
-
another fan made TOS series with 2 episodes. i really dig this series but there are only 2 episodes and im not sure there are anymore on the way.
-
Go Sulu!
-
just couldn't get through it. I was impressed by the fan interaction and surprised by how good the special effects were, but I just didn't think the writing or acting was there.
-
Awwww.......
-
I've been a fan of Trek since before I could read. I would insist to my brother that Trek was on at any given hour of the day and demand to watch it. I would attempt to prove my claim by picking random symbols from the TV Guide (later I would recognize these symbols as "words") that I believed indicated Trek was on. Anyway I was 3 and that was 1975. So I was this kid who had memorized all the episodes and production numbers, etc. etc. and had a pretty decent collection of paraphenalia by 13. I grew up in a small rural town in Idaho so there wasn't anyone to share my love of Trek with, and I eventually decided to hook up with some other Trekkies to talk about the series, the books, the movie, the new series, and really just have someone else to try and speak Klingon to. I was hugely disappointed with this introduction to the culture of Star Trek and I have been with almost every encounter I've had. There's this terrible classicism and self referential bullshit that most fans seem to jiz all over. In Harms Way brought back all of that disappointment. The writers were trying to force too many "canon moments" into too short a time, as if they had something to prove, rather than telling a new and compelling story. Roddenberry's Trek had nothing to do with the triteness of memorizing kirk's safe's combination. It was about illustrating human society and behavioral archetypes through an update of the greek drama structure (with a dash of Wagon Train). In Harms Way barely tells a story. It spends more time trying to get Trekkies to point at the screen and try to yell first "That's from episode 28 City On The Edge of Forever". Anyway I think the idea of The New Voyages is a great one. I just hope the writing gets better. And they should hire a wardrobe person to get the shirts to fit right. Its hard to take someone seriously when they're wearing a shirt that is two sizes too big.
-
WTF???? So when do we the general public who can't get there get to see it???
-
...but me, I can't get past the horrible writing, the stilted dialogue and the absolutely atrocious acting. To my eye it's more an exercise in fan community hype than anything else, but again, if you enjoy it then good for you, but I still stand by my own personal opinion that just like 99.9% of student films and fan-made hokum, it pretty much sucks.

Star Wreck - In The Pirkining (greatest fan movie ever)
by col. tigh-fighter
If you've never seen Star Wreck, a hilarious spoof of Star Trek v Babylon 5 you should watch it now! The special Effects are magnificent with space battles we used to pray that ST would do! And its seriously fucking funny! They did such a good job. If youve not seen it, seriously, CHECK IT OUT
http://www.starwreck.com/ -
seriously, why are these fan-made episodes even being talked about? I salute their ability to even make something remotely entertaining due to their lack of budget, but let's be honest...they SUCK compared to the official episodes. The acting is embarrassing at best, the costumes look like shit (that's assuming they even fit), and the special effects or "ok" at best. Finally, whatever episodes they make are not official canon and therefore don't really count in the long-term scheme of all things Trek. So yeah, I'll just wait for the next Trek movie for my next Star Trek fix. Until then, I have many "official" episodes and movies on DVD to watch.
-
Use software and friends!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qtnYncPz7I
rest of the episode is on Youtube also. Not the greatest quality (esp. sound in some cases) but hey! Made with TheMovies! game with the help of my wife, her friend and my 6 year old! :) -
I don't get bashing these guys for doing fan films. We don't bash people for doing community theater.
-
...and one that I had never considered. Those community theater assholes really need an ass kicking! Just who do they think they are? ;)
-
would get more buzz... But if the story is meant to be brief, and if the budget isn't there for more shooting days, then it is what it is. It just seems to me that when in Rome, you may as well milk a one-off.
-
The first i ever heard of"New Voyages" was on this thread so off i went to check it out.I think it's incredible what these guys have done in only 3 episodes, the huge leaps in all aspects of production between the episodes is staggering.I am anxious to see the sulu episode now more than ever..The chekov episode is pretty great a few flaws sure...but still in a league of it's own for fan produced/funded.Thanks for re-igniting my own interest in Star Trek which for me at least has been on the wane for a good 6 years...
-
like Mr Sulu's poop chute. cause this looks like ass.
