Wow. Now that's a Superhero movie trailer. But I agree with the esteemed Mr. Trilby. Stark/Downey comes off as really smarmy, almost unlikeable. I always pictured Stark as a charming drunk (Errol Flynn) that's why I wanted Clooney in the role. I'm there opening day either way.

    by reflecto

everything just sounds and looks right and legit. Watchmen is getting there too, but I have my doubts on Snyder - 300 was beautiful, but did not have much of a narrative for me.

If only Marvel would treat all its OTHER movie adaptations with the same care, respect, time and money as this and Batman Begins. We could have a real Daredevil, not to mention the FF.

Holy Fucking Shit (Lather, rinse, repeat.)
Holy Fucking Shit (apply directly to the forehead)
And this, my friends, is why I love comic book movies. A guy who fucking GETS IT directing a movie that needs to have a guy who GETS IT at the wheel. Why Downey is perfect for the role? Because Stark IS the smarmy, war profiteering a-hole before he gets all fucked up by (whoever they've changed the enemy to in this story...I'm guessing middle eastern bloc radicals) the bad guys. He goes through a change of heart about designing weapons, and decides to design better and better lifesaving devices.Which is why he creates the Iron Man rescue armor. This movie is going to kick all the asses through the back of the theater. And I LOVE Downey in the role...second pick would have been Depp, because of the Ultimates comic...(no flames or off-topic stuff...I'll chat in those talkbacks about the OG Marvel vs. Ultimates Universes)...Anyway, thanks Harry, for some cool fucking news, and for NOT showing us your tender vittles.

    reflecto wrong

    by messi

The reason this film is looking so good and so 'Iron Man' is because Marvel is directly involved, they finance and are making this film. Daredevil and FF were all raped by Fox, although I think Daredevil was very close to the comic, it was the execution that let it down, whilst FF sucked both ways. But look at the difference in how they handle this and the way they handle the other movies. They bring this to life. Marvel aren't stupid, it's why they have been owning sales for decades(exception the bankruptcy) but they know the strength lies in the stories and characters. Wait till the rights revoke to marvel for spidey and the punisher. Although i'm skeptical about marvel using Rhythm and Hues to do the hulk when they are absolutely horrible at cgi in general, much less organic based CGI, the only effects house that can do photorealistic organic beings is Weta, ILM are still not there but they can do everything else. They chose ILM for Ironman which is smart but not Weta for Hulk? Ehh?

    Reply to Talkback

  • Jul 29, 2007 4:04:56 PM CDT

Good to know, I don't know how involved they were

    by reflecto

On the X-films or Hulk. The X-films were also mostly mediocre to me. Bryan Singer is a talented director w/a vision, but as a gay fan even I got tired of the same analogies towards real-life prejudice being employed over and over. I also thought, and still think, that on both X-Men and Superman Returns, Singer seemed to go for visual spectacle but shy away from telling really good, big stories with a lot of action. I got so sick of the X-Men looking drab and fighting humans (X3 of course sucked too). I couldn't believe all the time spent on eye candy in SR and then all he does is fight ANOTHER Earthbound disaster. And don't get me started on Bosworth or the Spider-Man-esque "tragic father who can't tell the woman he loves about his secret life" angle.

Of course, I loved Ang Lee's Hulk so I am stupid. I thought it had a artistic vision, just like Burton or Chris Nolan. I am pleased to hear that supposedly the new Hulk picks up after the original.

    by mr. jack burton

...the flick will have the same problem as all the other Marvel based movies: Isolation from the whole Marvel Universe!!!! For me, Iron Man was always a part of The Avengers (storyline) and in this group he was the guy without superpowers or special abilities(except his technical knowledge)!! He was the nerd that build himself a suit so that he can play a superhero, just like Syndrom in The Incredibles! So for me, Iron Man would be reaaaally interesting in (a movie) world full of superheros/villains! Then he could show that there is nothing more to fear than an engineering degree!

The only drawback to this is the problems of making an

Avengers film. Which they apparently are actually trying to do. I've never understood the push for a JLA film, since it will never be possible to get the actors playing Superman, Batman, etc. all to sign on for the film. An Avengers picture is a similar problem, but different. Would RDJ return? I'm not willing to settle for like, a West Coast Avengers. I would want it to be a vehicle for Captain America but include Iron Man and others. Matt Damon would still be a perfect Cap IMHO.

The Dark Knight teaser was sucky beyond belief, and even this hand-cammed, audience-cheering (not that I mind, I actually love enthusiastic audiences) is INFINITELY better than that piece of garbage they dare title Dark Knight teaser. Still, I'm looking forward to TDK, but in matters of getting me excited, Iron Man has taken the lead. Oh, and my original rant was about waiting a year. Yeah, why do they put us through the pain of waiting? Couldnt they hold this stuff in until 2 months prior to the premiere? Old mans complaints, I apologize.. it just ain't right.

It's the first step, to coin a phrase, into a larger world...of course, the tricky part is that this is Marvel's first Paramount Picture (hence, no Spidey, X, or FF appearances) but they're laying good groundwork, in that the next Marvamount pic is Edgar Wright's Ant-Man. As for the Con trailer...

    by mr. nice gaius

... it's put together well. I never thought Iron Man was that popular but Downey makes this look worthwhile. (How could he not!)The practical real-life suits do look impressive. That was a great decision for them to make on the effects side of things.I've not been too impressed with Favreau as a director. I hope the cast that's been assembled here can raise the material above any pedestrian tendencies I fear he may have.

I'm also very happy with the SFX practical side

    by spencertrilby

I thought it was just stunt-promotionnal BS from Favreau, in order to put the anti-CGI fanboys on his side. But I humbly realize how FUCKING WRONG I was. The cave battle looks amazing.

However Mr. Nice Gaius, I totally agree with the "pedestrian tendencies" of Favreau. And I also think that he maybe pushed the envelope on Stark's asshole-factor. Stark has never been that kind of sarcastic moron with tongue-in-cheek humor. He's an asshole (sometimes) but not that kind of asshole. It looks like Downey and Favreau tried too hard to emulate the Connery/Young work creative relationship while creating the screen Bond: trying to humanize a mofo by adding unnecessary humor. It might work, but it looks a lil' silly to my tastes. And I respectfully recall to everyone that adding bad jokes is the swan song of the genre (T3, anyone?)

    by alantempis

The character of Tony Stark has historically been one of redemption. His and his fathers fortune came from manufacturing munitions originally and Tony has battled that demon for decades(comic book time).Starks brush with death is a direct result of his being in the arms race and we will see him grow from shallow,smart-ass "Merchant of Death" to the responsible "Armored Avenger".Stane and his Iron-Monger will be heavily involved and serve as a counter-point to Tonys new outlook on life.Overall I'm looking forward to this film and pray this may be a sign of things to come for the Marvel franchise.

I am officially excited about this movie

    by greatczarsghost

I've been a Iron Man reader and fan since the late 60's and must say that this could be the movie I've been waiting to see since then. When Comic Book movies started getting hot in the late 90's started to believe this could happen. When the movie was announced last year I was nervous knowing what would happen if they fucked it up. Now I'm officially excited and can not wait for May 2008. By the way, does anyone know what happened to the really cool full sized Red/White Iron Man armor that was on display in the Marvel Mania restaurant at Universal City Walk in LA after the joint closed??? The food was a little better than eatable but the bar had great "Marvel" drinks and that suit of armor was amazing.

it was a REAL teaser, like in "we tease you with a piece of dialogue and the fucking Joker's voice". Nice in its own right.

This, however, is a promo reel to hype a much less famous character and please the fans. Like the John Rambo footage: it kicks ass but takes a huge gamble by showing much, much footage and therefore being A/ cleverly misleading or B/ a very expensive "4-minutes Bunnies present: Iron Man".

Hey. Yeah, I was kind of thinking the same thing. In Forge's case, I suppose his ability is more intuitive since it's actually a part of who he is. Although, I don't recall him ever making anything as impressive and adaptive as the Iron Man armor.Damn, it's been a LONG time since I've read any comics. Forge's name just popped into my head while watching that promo reel and I thought I'd ask.

    by monolithik

It's Forge's mutation to improve upon technology, but Stark often calls himself, first and foremost, a futurist. He's building weapons and laying plans for things no one else is aware are even on the horizon. Whatever Forge can build... theoretically, Stark would be ready. Or he's full of bullshit. Hmm. Hahah. Tough call.

Playboy, alchoholic, adventurer...He was Dean Martin in a metal tux. Don't care much for his turn in the Civil War but love the Ultimates take. Too bad this film will be released during the heart of the coming economic depression and will, finacially speaking, fail at the box office. The imminent war with Iran and Syria, coupled with the increasing criminal investigations into White House wrong doings and the dramatic decline of the US dollar along with the currently bursting home equity bubble and the accompanying rise in bankrupcies and foreclosures indicate that most of us won't have the 15 bucks to see this at the theater....Sorry, don't mean to piss on the parade...just feeling a little existintionalist...(or however the hell you spell it). Here's to hoping I'm wrong.

    Very encouraging

    by lobanhaki

I like what I see. Of course, good opinions about the final product must wait for a good viewing, but that caveat aside, let me address a concern here: I liked the Dark Knight trailer, too. It's called a stylistic choice, folks. One guy wants to impress with visuals, might need to get people excited about what folks might be skeptical about. The other guy has a known property, with a successful reimagining already done, and he's going to have Michael Caine give an excellently written set-up speech about what the villain in the next movie is about: The scared mobsters have turned to a guy who's depths of wacko-ness they've underestimated.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What's wrong with either approach? Nothing. It's called storytelling. It's called art. It's called there's more than one way to skin a cat and build anticipation. Folks have to get off this idea that there's only one way to do a good movie, much less a good trailer.

All the main avengers characters are at Marvel/Paramount, they own the rights. An Avengers movie is possible and now legally possible, it all depends on the bank Iron Man and Hulk make. Unless you're a newbie and think that the avengers = new avengers so there will be no spidey and wolverine. Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Antman/Giant Man, Wasp, Nick Fury. Are all at Marvel/Paramount.

    by soundofsilver

If they finally do an avengers movie--- just adapt Ultimates Vol. 1--- out of almost every graphic novel I've ever read (and I've read many) it feels the most like a balls-to-the-wall action movie without changing a thing---

    Iron Man - RDjr
    Hulk - Ed Norton
Thor - Brad Pitt (buff him up one last time Fight Club style and let his freedom flag fly-- remember this is also the mysterious New Age Thor from Ultimates-- which I think is a little more stomachable to mainstream action movie audiences-- especially if this movie is to have any kind of real-world weight to it)
    Captain America - Daniel Craig
Ant Man - who fuckin cares-- (wish list: Clive Owen)
Nick Fury -- Sam Jack (of course...)

    Just do that shit.

It's Ocean's 14 with Superheroes... only I'll go see it.

Brad Pitt as Thor? he's like 40 something, you expect to bulk up so badly in this age to play a non main character. He was designed after Sean Bean. But i'd prefer the bodybuilder Gunter Schierlkamp who looks like him and can act. Brad Pitt could of played Cap, about 10 years ago.

back to the subject of Tom Cruise..

    by cotton mcknight

I think he's full of it. I had severe depression issues back in the 90s, and I am just NOW getting back on my feet, in a lot of respects. Well, I hit a road bump and I was prescribed something for anxiety and it works very well.. and I know what I am talking about because I spent years and years talking to counselors and I felt like garbage the whole time. This allows me to stay focused AND deal with the problems. SO yeah, he is full of it. Would have been a better iron man than Downey jr. Though.

    Good Times...

Speaking about times to remember, I really miss commenting on JJ Abrams upcoming Voltron movie. It seems like only yesterday we were measuring the size of Lady Liberty's CGI head to see if it was accurate. Comeback, Voltron, Comeback!

    Universal owns The Hulk's rights.

    by spencertrilby

so unless they try the "two studios package" (convenient but fucking risky and problematic) they're screwed.

why not just post the vid on the official site?

    by automation overlord

i mean they showed it at comic con, so its not like its was secret footage, and posting in in glorious quicktime would eliminate this cam phone vid thats illegally on youtube...plus favreua is apparently so for the fans you'd think he'd love to have everyone that couldn't make it to comiccon see this footage as it should be shown (not dark and without nerd gasim noises over dialoge)

Universal doesn't own the Hulk's rights...

    by zerocorpse

They had them, but the new Hulk movie is a Marvel FIlms production, not Universal. Apparently, Marvel managed to get the film rights to their own character back.

As for this footage-- WOW. This puts huge faith in Marvel Films. If all their films are this enticing, I'll be thrilled. Can't wait to see what they do with Captain America now!

    Best Inventor?

    by micturatingbenjamin

Reed Fucking Richards. Recognize. Literally the smartest man in the Marvel Universe. However, Forge, given anything can make anything else out of it, without actual 'skills' to rely on. Modification of actual existing stuff? Blows Stark away. Stark, on the other hand, comes up with ideas like: Let's put the fucking criminals in another dimension...work with me here Rage Kage, let's spitball some figures...Anyway...The winner of the Forge/Stark thing? Probably Stark, though he has TEAMS of guys helping him and an infinite source of money...Forge could turn your toaster into a Sentinel Mark T. Winnah: (In a three-issue arc) Forge in issues 1 and 2, Stark overall in issue 3 with his Mutant Nullifier Mk II.

Favreau...Don't take a dump on all of our childhoods, pleeze....Call Peter Jackson, Michael Bay, spend some money on this sucker! Make this look good & it'll make hundreds of millions of dollars. Look at TRANSFORMERS; it had no storyline & still made massive box-office & looked grreat! Don't fuck it up...make it LOOK real! That's all I gotta say....Happy
